TCSL Members, We’re only a few short weeks away from the Summer season’s kickoff, and we couldn’t be more excited. The anticipation of a new season is always exciting for us in the TCSL office, and we know it is for you too! This summer, we welcome back 1,200-plus teams to fields all across the metro. TCSL clubs have seen significant participation increase when compared to last summer, and we’re thrilled that the game has bounced back from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Check out the Summer Match Day Guide so you’re ready to take the pitch. Over the course of the last several months our office has prioritized a crucial component of the game: referee recruitment and on-boarding support. As you’ve likely heard, referees are in short supply. To address what has become a nationwide issue, we’ve worked collaboratively with our clubs to blueprint how we must work together to increase referee numbers and support this critical part of our game. You’ve likely seen, or better yet, taken the Sideline Project course. If not, take the course and join the pledge wall today! If all of us commit to being good stewards of the soccer culture, think of the impact we can have on the children that play this game. We’re especially excited about this edition of the TCSL Magazine because it highlights our goal to be more than a league. We highlight a Respect the Referee initiative, a new and improved league postseason concept (“Final 4”), programming for 7U/8U teams, the Minnesota NPL and the opportunity for league winners to compete in Colorado for an NPL title and more. THE SIDELINE PROJECT Each and Every Parent: Take the 15-Minute Course! TCSL is asking ALL youth soccer parents to complete a 15-minute course about the impact sideline behavior has on everyone present at the field. Words and actions commonly considered part of mainstream sports experience can have a hugely negative impact on referees, coaches, spectators and most importantly, our players. We believe that by working together to raise awareness and consciously shift behavior, we can create a positive gameday experience for everyone. A positive sideline culture will keep more players playing. A positive sideline culture will keep more referees refereeing. A positive sideline culture will keep more coaches coaching.

Introducing 7U & 8U Programming TCSL League We are excited to welcome back 1,200+ teams to the field this summer! Ever wonder how divisions are formed? Each club is represented on the Technical Advisory Panel which meets prior to each season to form divisions. The group balances the desire to keep travel to a minimum while also looking at results from prior seasons with the goal of providing appropriate competition for each of our teams. Two TCSL values specifically – transparency and competition – drive this process! SCHEDULES + RESULTS

Pilot coming to a field near you this summer! Making a difference for these crucial developmental ages. Objectives: » Provide fun, energetic, introductory program for these crucial ages. » Retain players at 9U that are better prepared with a better developed skillset. » 8U soccer should be its own brand and should not be a mini-version of older-aged soccer. » Support clubs by having a standards-driven experience for these young players. Format: » Festival days – 2 matches on each play date, concluded within 2-3 hour span (convenient for families) » 5v5 (4 field players + 1 GK) – developing thinking players with good technique

Minnesota NPL Spring Showcase May 14-15, 2022 | Lucy Winton Bell (Lakeland, Minn.) We are excited to provide an avenue for 16U-19U boys and girls NPL players to play league matches in a Showcase environment! Minnesota NPL teams continue campaign with sights on Colorado! EVENT PREVIEW Minnesota Cup June 1-5, 2022 | Various Sites Open to all 11U-19U teams with US Club Soccer passes The Minnesota Cup is a statewide championship designed to advance the top 13-U through 18/19-U teams to the US Club Soccer National Cup. The competition is conducted over a four-day stretch and marks the true start of a campaign where every team shares the same goal; being the last team standing in Minnesota’s most exciting competition!

Summer Festival, Presented by TRIA June 25-26, 2022 | Cottage Grove, Minn. Open to all TCSL 9U & 10U teams This popular event will fill quickly! The Summer Festival is a tournament designed to conclude the Summer 2022 League season for 9U and 10U age groups. Fans will fill the sidelines as hundreds of kids take part in this fun one-day event. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games with medals, and fun, for all. June 25 – Boys June 26 – Girls INFORMATION + REGISTRATION

TCSL Final 4, Presented by TRIA July 22-24, 2022 | Shakopee, Minn. TCSL is excited to announce the TCSL Final 4! This brand-new event will provide a culminating experience where the top league teams compete to be crowned champions. » Top 4 teams in each age/gender/division are automatically qualified based on standings in League play at season’s end. Reference the Final 4 Rules for qualification/seeding information. » All teams play two (2) matches. » Semi-Final winners play in the Final 4 Championship » Semi-Final losers play in the Shield (3rd Place) match. RESPECT THE REF TCSL is proud to launch a Respect the Ref initiative in advance of the Summer 2022 TCSL season! What to know: 1.

There is a referee shortage. We need to encourage our referees to stay part of the game, instead of giving them reasons to leave the game.

2. Referees will make mistakes. They are learning, just as the players are. 3. Decisions are made in the moment and are final. Please understand that angles are critical to decision making, and your angle might have differed from the angle of the referee. 4. Be empathetic: the referee is a son, daughter, mother, father, grandparent…what if they were yours? 5. LIMELIGHT Samm Dalsin joins TCSL as its Event Coordinator We are thrilled to announce the hiring of Samantha (Samm) Dalsin as the TCSL Event Coordinator, where her primary responsibility will be managing the flawless execution of TCSL events. A familiar face to TCSL, Samm was one of our Event Management Interns last summer and also has significant experience as a referee assignor as well. A recent graduate of ConcordiaMoorhead with a degree in business marketing and communication studies, Samm was a member of the women’s soccer team and had club stops at Minnesota Thunder Academy and EPSC prior to her collegiate playing career. She’s no stranger to the soccer scene in the Twin Cities, and we couldn’t be happier to have her on board.

TCSL Team of the Week TCSL believes in recognizing its players, coaches and referees, both in terms of performance on the field but also for acts of good sportsmanship. Through a nomination process, TCSL will select a Team of the Week each week through the summer season. This weekly selection will serve as a recognition to those individuals and a way to achieve our objective of living out our core values -- transparency, competition, sportsmanship and in this case, limelight! COACH EDUCATION Firm with our belief that “better coaches develop better players”, TCSL continues to be a leader in offering coach education opportunities to its members.

USSF ‘D’ License January 26 – April 27, 2022 Blended (Virtual + Field Session) Course Thirty-six coaches will conclude their United States Soccer Federation ‘D’ License on Saturday, April 23 at the field session portion of the course. While originally scheduled for outdoors, thanks to our partners at the Sanneh Foundation, we were able to pivot and host the coaches instead indoors at the Sanneh Dome.

For the third consecutive year, this course reached its capacity with so many coaches getting the benefit of furthering their development as a coach. Well done!

Twenty-four coaches are currently engaged in virtual activities before gathering in Plymouth for the inperson part of the course (held June 16-19, 2022).

TCSL also hosted several grassroots courses (7v7, 9v9, 11v11) in January and February, which served as pre-requisites to the ‘D’, and by extension, the ‘C’ License.

Concussions with TRIA Orthopedics Concussions can sideline any soccer player. However, there are many common misconceptions about concussions. TRIA sports psychologist Dr. Aimee Custer is here to bust the most common concussion myths and share the truth about symptoms and recovery. Myth: You must avoid all activities after a concussion. Truth: While avoiding activities that trigger symptoms is important early on, it is not necessary to avoid all activity. A concussion expert at TRIA’s Sport Concussion Program can help you follow a symptom-dependent progression of activity and take an active role in your recovery. An athlete can return to sport after a medical professional has cleared them to play. Myth: To truly have a concussion, you must lose consciousness. Truth: Only 5 to 10 percent of concussions result in a loss of consciousness. Symptoms may occur immediately, but sometimes they evolve over time. A medical professional can help diagnose a concussion, regardless of whether the athlete loses consciousness or not. For more concussion myths and truths, visit TRIA’s blog.
