4. ALUMNI OF ST GREGORY'S, 1592-1767 Preliminary note The following list includes the names of all those English and Irish students or priests known to have been members of the college between 1592 and 1767. The names in square brackets are those of men who were not strictly speaking alumni for instance the companions of Robert Persons who passed through Seville in 1591, the year before the foundation of the college. Not all the students listed below were ordained priest , but I have recorded evidence of such ordination where it exists. The list includes English and Irish convictors (student lodgers who were not seminarians) but not Spanish convictors, of whom there were many in the late 17th and 18th centuries. The use of aliaseswas practised more commonlyat ECS than elsewhere(see p 10) , and this has made the compilation of the list unusually difficult . The hispanised versions of English surnames (given in brackets) has presentedan additional complication. In the most intractable cases I have ventured an educated guess , but the identities of such as Carlos Anglicanomay never be known . To avoid the proliferation of references, I have generally not included those already listed by Anstruther but have cited sources which he overlooked . Very full information on those students who were alumni of St Omer is available in CRS vol. 69.
