6. ENGLISH JESUITS IN ANDALUSIA, 1592-1660 English members of the Society of Jesus who resided at St Gregory's or at other houses in Andalusia are listed below . If they were themselves alumni ofSt Gregory's , thereis a cross- reference to the alumni list. Spanish versions of surnames are given in brackets , though I have not been able to decode them in all cases ( e.g. Christopher Wensonius , Thomas Ignatius). Titles

Minister Administrator of the college, subject to the Rector. Procurator Bursar Praefectus Spiritus = Spiritual Director of the students. Operarius Missioner and preacher , engaged in pastoralwork. Temporal coadjutor= Laybrother. Eleemosynarius = Collector of alms (usually an English laybrother) . Sources

Most of the information is based on the records of the Andalusian province (Provincia Baetica) in the Archivum Romanum S.J. (ARSI) . I have also referred to catalogues of the provinces of Castille (Cast.) , Toledo (Tol.) Belgium (Belg.) and England (Angl.). Otherwise the reader should refer to the list of sources and abbreviations on pp 38-42. The main sources quoted below are as follows:

.

Baet.8 . Catalogi triennales 1583-1622. Baet.9 1 . Catalogi triennales 1625-39. Baet.9 2 . Catalogi triennales 1640-51. Baet. 14/1 . Catalogi breves 1621-40. Baet. 14/2 . Catalogi breves 1641-99. Baet. 3-6. Epistulae Generales. Cast. 14/1 . Catalogi triennales 1584-1600. Cast . 27. Catalogi breves 1595-8. Tolet. 21/1, Catalogi triennales 1584-97. Belg. 43. Catalogi breves Provinciae Belgicae 1577-1615. Belg. 44. Catalogi breves 1616-33. Gall.-Belg. 24. Catalogi breves Provinciae Gallico - Belgicae 1613-39. The triennial catalogues normally give the age of each subject , and his years in the Society , but often the figures are inconsistent from one entry to another . For that reason, some of the dates and ages given below have to be approximate . have provided cross -references to entries in Anstruther, Foley and relevant CRS volumes , but there are some namesbelow which are not found in these sources, and some of the data provided will require a correction of hitherto published entries on individual Jesuits. Those Englishmen who joined the Society in Andalusia will have done their novitiate at the Casa Profesa , Seville, until about 1597 , when the novitiate was moved to Montilla . About 1610 the novitiate returned to Seville, at San Luis.
