EXPANDED WORDS. 1. Words abbreviated in the MS. with a contraction sign are always printed in full, with the added letters in italics . E.g. MS. noie; Phiae; 7bris; printed nomine ; Philosophiae ; Septembris. 2. When no contraction sign was used, a word may, if easily intelligible , be left abbreviated as in the MS. E.g. A. Dni . N.B. Punctuation marks used merely as signs of abbreviation in MS . are suppressed if the word is expanded in print. E.g. MS. ibid . 23 Feb. printed ibidem 23 Feb. 3. SPELLING follows the practice of the MS. , including the use of u and v ; but is printed as . CAPITALS follow the MS. , as far as the vague usage of the period
