Winter Sports Park By The Numbers

Thank you to all who came out and enjoyed some winter fun at the Winter Sports Park this 2022-2023 season. We are proud to offer outdoor enjoyment for the community at the Winter Sports Park season after season.

5,520 SKATERS

2,700 SLEDDERS

270

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIERS

245 SNOWSHOERS

240 SEASON PASS HOLDERS

2,650 EQUIPMENT RENTALS

Each year, we aim to close the Winter Sports Park in early March. Warmer temperatures and the sun’s position begin to impact the condition of the ice and make it hard to keep areas of the rink safe for skating. We also shift operations to the Tahoe City Golf Course This includes changes in seasonal staff, breaking down the ice rink, and prepping the clubhouse and course for the arrival of golfers as early as April depending on conditions. We look forward to seeing you at the Winter Sports Park in November!

Stay up to date on park updates, and opening and closing dates throughout the season at tcpud.org/winter.

Sequoia Trail Crossing Safety Enhancement Project

A bicycle and pedestrian safety improvement project is underway at the Sequoia Trail Crossing located along the TCPUD Multi-Use Trail System on the west shore near Sequoia Avenue and Highway 89

The Sequoia Trail Crossing Safety Enhancement Project includes new advance warning and crosswalk signs The new signs use LED, rapid flashing beacons, and solar-powered technology Push button controllers will replace existing and often less reliable sensors To activate the new advance warning system, trail users will stop at the Sequoia Trail Crossing, push the button, and wait for traffic to stop before crossing Highway 89 The goal is to improve safety and visibility for trail users and vehicles and ultimately reduce the number of accidents in this area

The Project is expected to be completed by the end of May (conditions permitting) It is funded in part by Placer County Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) dollars

The safety improvements made at the Sequoia Trail Crossing will be similar to the Dollar Hill Crossing warning system on the north shore, where users must activate a flashing sign This is different from the Fanny Bridge Crossing in downtown Tahoe City, where trail users push a button to activate a traffic stop light instead of a flashing sign

For more information about the Multi-Use Trail System and to complete a Trail Survey, visit tcpud org/trails

Creating Eligibility for Water Infrastructure for Fire Suppression Projects

The TCPUD has been a participating member of the Tahoe Water for Fire Suppression Partnership since it was formed in response to the 2007 Angora Fire. The mission of this bi-state collaboration of Lake Tahoe Basin water agencies is to accelerate the installation of water infrastructure improvements such as upsizing water mains and installing fire hydrants, both of which are critical to address fire suppression needs. Since 2009, the Partnership has leveraged over $20 million in federal funding to install over $52 million of critical fire suppression projects. With an estimated $120 million of additional investment identified over the next 5 years, more work is needed to secure funding.

The Partnership has found a champion for these efforts in the newly elected California State Senator AlvaradoGil. Since taking office, the Senator has introduced a new bill, SB 470, meant to create funding eligibility for water infrastructure for fire suppression projects under the Department of Conservation Regional Forest and Fire Capacity Program. The bill is gaining attention and support from regional and state partners, and TCPUD is working closely with the Senator’s office to maintain the momentum of this important piece of legislation.

TCPUD Investing in Water and Sewer Infrastructure

The TCPUD is beginning Phase 2 of its Smart Meter Replacement Program to gradually upgrade water meters with “smart” meters on approximately 3,500 connections throughout TCPUD’s service area by 2024.

Smart metering benefits TCPUD and its customers and enhances water conservation efforts. The smart meter technology sends water consumption data via cellular four times a day, reducing the need for onsite meter reading by TCPUD. Real-time tracking helps customers and TCPUD detect leaks or unusual or high usage amounts earlier. Additionally, it gives customers the information they need to track and maximize their water usage.

The three-phase Project represents an investment of $1.7 million and includes:

Phase 1 (completed in 2022) replaced nearly 800 water meters.

Phase 2 (2023) will replace nearly 1,200 water meters. Phase 3 is scheduled for 2024.

Visit tcpud.org/smartmeterreplacement to learn more about the Smart Meter Replacement Program.

TCPUD will complete Phase 2 of the Emergency Bypass Port and Sewer Pumps Station Storage Improvement Project this year. Phase 1 of the Project, completed in 2022, included the installation of four bypass ports and the construction of two sewer pump stations in the Rubicon neighborhood. Total cost to complete Phase 1 was approximately $1 million.

Phase 2 will include two distinct projects in 2023.

The Emergency Bypass Ports Project includes the installation of 11 bypass ports. Bypass ports allow TCPUD flexibility to take shorter sections of the sewer force main offline for repairs or maintenance. Field work will begin in late summer when sewer flows are lower. The total cost of the project is approximately $1.3 million.

The Sewer Pump Station Storage Improvement Project includes the installation of a storage vault at the Water’s Edge pump station in Tahoma This improvement will allow TCPUD additional time to respond to a pump station failure and prevent overflow by providing 10,000 gallons of secondary sewer storage The total cost of the project is approximately $550,000
