While ChatGPT can write responses to queries that read and sound convincing these answers are still prone to mistakes
The ability of ChatGPT, or any generative AI platform for that matter, to answer specific questions and requests is based on the information contained in the training set This information is commonly scraped from a wide variety of databases available on the internet; it can be collected from databases curated by experts or from social media sites This approach can also reflect generative AI’s major weakness
In most generative AI platforms, there is no way for the requestor to validate the information used to train the specific generative AI program Though the answer is written well and looks convincing at first glance, there is a lack of transparency about the sources of the data or their validity
As a result, generative AI can also perpetuate biases or misinformation within the training set Generative AI can incorporate misinformation into its answers with references that may or may not be real
Májovský Černý Kasal Komarc and Netuka (2023) used ChatGPT to generate a fraudulent scientific manuscript describing a clinical trial that was then reviewed by content area experts The reviews by the content area experts reported that “Overallthe generated article demonstrated a high level of technical proficiency and authenticity and “From a psychiatric expert point of view, the study could be considered groundbreaking ” (Májovský et al, 2023) Despite the glowing praise, the reviewers also noticed specific mistakes It was also noted that of the 17 references cited, 4 were found to be nonexistent, and 2 were contextually incorrect
To the untrained eye, these mistakes may be difficult to detect It’s not just humans having difficulty some tools designed to detect AI-generated material can also look past these errors An analysis of their ChatGPT-generated manuscript using 2 AI detector programs reported either inconclusive or unclear evidence that the manuscript was AI-generated (Májovský et al, 2023)
The internet has quickly become the number one source of information One search is all it takes for pages upon pages to appear right at your fingertips The information that has become readily available for people, along with the ability to process human language, have become the foundation of generative Artificial Intelligence Generative AI is characterized by algorithms that create content (text or image) using machine learning technology
With the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, it has quickly become a household name because of its wideranging abilities ChatGPT, only one of many generative AI platforms, has the ability to provide short paragraphs, lengthy stories, summarized manuscripts, and poems that mimic the creative mind of humans
POTENTIAL TO POSITIVELY IMPACT SCIENCE
Despite the aforementioned limitations, there are several areas in which generative AI has great potential utility in science One such aspect is using programs like ChatGPT to improve the writing of manuscripts, speed up routine administrative tasks, and ultimately help in efficiently writing manuscripts (Van Noorden and Perkel 2023)
With its ability to decode and comprehend human language generative AI can assist non-native Englishspeaking scientists in writing their manuscripts This step towards innovation represents an opportunity to help the dissemination of new studies and improve efficiencies throughout the process of publication Additionally, Parrilla (2023) proposed that Generative AI is of benefit to writing research grants as it lessens the burden of grant writing

Experts have raised concerns that generative AI programs will have a negative impact on the scientific community– in scientific manuscripts, the peer review process and ultimately the quality of scientific publications
Despite the debates, generative AI is already being used by scientists in different ways In a survey of 1600 scientists conducted by Nature, the limitations of AIgeneration was recognized 50% stated that the results of using AI tools can promote bias or discrimination, 55% stated that fraud would be easier and 53% stated that the use of these tools leads to more irreproducible research (Van Noorden and Perkel, 2023)
Despite the overwhelming negative reception, 40% of the scientists who used generative AI in their research found it useful compared with 18% who were not using generative AI Approximately 75% of current users and 40% of nonusers of generative AI felt that using it in their work in the next 10 years will become essential and very useful
THE CONCERN OF TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Guillaume Cabanac provides the strongest evidence that the use of generative AI in scientific publications needs to be directly addressed
In his work, Cabanac has discovered the undeclared use of ChatGPT or other generative AI in over 12 articles published in peer-reviewed journals since April 2023 They were not so sneaky as many of these papers were detected owing to the authors failure to delete generative AI tag lines like “regenerate response,” whereas others were detected because of referencing nonexistent sources
These findings confirm that generative AI has found its place in the scientific community This begs the concern of transparency and accountability for its use
MEASURES TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES
With this becoming an issue in the scientific community, many scientific journals have began implementing standards to address AIgeneration
An example is that all authors must document their contributions to the work and possible or real conflicts of interest must be declared by all authors Most journals have stated that ChatGPT or other generative AI programs cannot be listed as authors Only humans can be held accountable for their published work, and equivalently, they must be held accountable for any mistakes when using generative AI
In developing their approach to the role of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) JID Innovations will introduce specific requirements that they aim to make authors, editors, and reviewers fully aware of the challenges and benefits of generative AI tools JID Innovations will also mandate accountability in their end goal to improve transparency about how generative AI is being used in scientific literature
These currently instituted measures, among many others, are designed to improve the transparency of methods and accountability of authors for their work AI-generative platforms’ rapid growth and their potential for both positive and negative impacts in science must continue to push the scientific community to take steps to mitigate the potential harm of generative AI on scientific literature
TAKING ACCOUNTABILITY AND IMPROVING TRANSPARENCY
Though nobody can be cerain of how generative AI will impact the future of science and the publication of scientific discoveries, it is apparent that the current era of technology is at the early stages of the interaction of scientific publications and generative AI Thus, it it is with the collective duty of the community to be fully engaged with the development of generative AI and how it is used, and will continue to be used, in science
This requires extensive measures to regulate the use of generative AI in scientific literature and the adherence to these policies It is up to the scientists, the regular users– the community– to work together in ensuring that it does not damage the integrity and quality of what is published in scientific literature Continuous efforts to push towards taking accountability and improving transparency are necessary to guide individual evaluation and informed use of generative AI

A clinical sleep study conducted at Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center with 20 subjects using the ApneaDetector smartwatch revealed that while the system accurately classified normal and sleep apnea events, it encountered issues with more specific categorizations such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hypopnea
