Many think that having not to pay tuition to the education department will resolve the educational crisis that continues to rise in the country, and spoiler alert; it does not There are many aspects that affect and to consider the education sector and why the education crisis still prevails

of the education facilities within the country has an outdated curriculum that fails to align with the current job markets and the evolving needs of the society

While having not to pay tuition fees has its own benefits; such as the less fortunate will have access

to free education, there would be a larger number of individuals to take the advantage and pursue to have a degree No tuition fee, no student debt; though this only focuses on public students, it’s still a step forward as there would still be a large number of students who won’t have to worry about being in debt and allows them to solely focus on their program Students will be free to explore their interests; they will be free to pursue their true passion and would not think twice on whether they should choose between passion or practicality

It is the 21st century, yet the Philippines is stuck in the old ages The Philippines should open their eyes on the sake of having their eyes peeled for having sex education in their curriculum.

There is been a lot of horrid cases of sexual assault all because the latter was oblivious about the horrors of sex, as they view it as a one time thing that will have no consequences all because the youth isn’t taught about this, it leads them to be in the dark about these topics which in return has them being ignorant about choices in this spectrum

The youth takes a lot of risks in regards to having sex and it doesn’t particularly end well The Philippines is not exactly keen on the idea of abortion, once the latter takes a risk and has unprotected sex there is no turning back when one gets pregnant, they have to carry the child which may cause their mental health to be tarnished and their teen years

Sex education will give light to the darkness of heedless sexual behavior This will help them recognize potential dangers such as sexual abuse, violence, and molestation

Undeniably, free tuition will help decrease the educational crisis, but it will not resolve it As stated, there are many aspects and things to consider with the rising educational crisis Among the many reasons, the Philippines is scarce with resources and infrastructure; many schools, especially in the rural areas, lack basic amenities that affect the quality of education Inadequate salaries for teachers; with the minimum wage salary of 36,000 pesos that teachers get paid, it does not help recruit and keep teachers Lastly, having an outdated curriculum; the majority

A hefty amount of the youth are muddled about their gender identity, convoluted on their sexuality and particularly addled about their bodies Sex education aids to those whom are confused about those and succor their body understanding to reach a better self esteem

It is time that the Philippines finally change their views about sex education, as this is not a gateway for them to do it but rather this shall serve as a way for them to have better choices in these and not just being led blindly in the darkness

Free tuition is one solution to start resolving the educational crisis, however, there should be more solutions to fully and efficiently eradicate the rising educational crisis The government should give more focus to this problem in order to improve the country’s developing economy

THE EMPOWERING VOICES OF STUDENT PUBLICATIONS:

F

The fight for freedom of expression, particularly within the academe, is a fight for the very soul of education Universities should be sanctuaries of open dialogue, critical thinking, and the exchange of ideas The removal of these spaces and the silencing of student voices go against the very principles of academic freedom and democracy

To the administration of the University of San Carlos and academic institutions across the nation, it is time to prioritize the voices of students and recognize their indispensable role in fostering transparency and accountability Students, educators, and alumni alike must come together to demand the restoration and protection of student publications, ensuring that they remain safe havens for free expression

THE CAROLINIAN EXPERIENCE ON CAMPUS PRESS REPRESSION

In response, Lawyer Joan Largo, USC’s vice president for administration, defended the decision in a phone interview with SunStar Cebu, stating that the reallocation was necessary due to the limited campus space and the under-use of Today’s Carolinian throughout the year “This is but a prudent use of our limited campus spaces, nothing more,” Largo said

LAWYER JOAN

LARGO

USC’SVICEPRESIDENT FORADMINISTRATION

Largo’s response, just like many government officials, blame the “limited campus space” to justify a difficult decision in the face of a shortage of resources However, it does raise an important contradiction in that if the university lacks enough facilities to accommodate all student needs, it could be seen as a failure of the administration to properly prioritize and allocate resources Replacing the student publication office with an alumni affairs office undercuts the interests of the current student body and diminishes the institution’s commitment to its educational mission

The student publication office represents the voice of the student body It provides a platform for students to engage with campus issues, share their perspectives, and advocate for change Removing this essential space silences their voice, suppressing the culture of open dialogue and democratic values that universities are meant to promote The publication office is not merely a physical space; it is a cornerstone of free expression, where students practice journalism, question authority, and raise awareness of issues that affect their community Without it, consider journalism dead

Just like many, Althea Tumulak reflects the attributes of a Filipino born into

RESTRICTED FREEDOM

Growing up in a society where limitations on self-expression are often normalized, some accept their fate, believing it unchangeable While the larger portion refuse to settle for less and dare to challenge these restrictions, which in return forces them to be put at risk

This incident could be driven back to the time where various Philippine media was shut down in the early hours of September 22, 1972 during the time of Ferdinand Marcos’ dictatorship, killing 34 media workers, 7 television stations, 16 national daily newspapers, 11 weekly magazines, 66 community newspapers, and 292 radio stations In our current state, the Philippines remains one of the most dangerous places for journalists, with media workers facing harassment, arbitrary detention, and even murder

As we progress into the present, the signs of growing restrictions on freedom of speech have become increasingly evident In reference to Today’s Carolinian, higher authorities continue to silence young activists, including those who investigate alleged human rights violations by the military, police, and other government agencies: With the premonition of red-tagging campaigns targeting Meta in silencing them

“NOT MANY UNDERSTAND THE VIOLENCE TO BECOME THIS SOFT”

ACTIONS OVER WORDS:

THE IMPACT OF ELON MUSK’S “ROMAN SALUTE”

Growing up we were taught to choose the right words. The way we say those words matters too, as the words we speak can absolutely influence other people But one’s actions always speak louder

People can tell others what a good leader, manager, father, mother, friend should be, or show them through behaviors

It is possible to wax lyrical about what a good artist should be, or show the world the art. One can argue about which direction is right, or how a process should work, or what a good business should look like, but fail to deliver the actions that are required to acquire it

When people say one thing but do something else, they send a clear message that what they say is far from the truth This mismatch leads to a form of heavy hypocrisy, where the person’s actions contradict the principles or values they claim to uphold. It not only damages their reputation but also diminishes the respect others have for them It is hard to plan, but it is even harder to take action

HYPOCRISY IN LIGHT OF THE PRESENT

At the root of hypocrisy is the desire for power over others Hypocrites wish to enforce a strict set of rules among everyone else while exempting themselves from the same expectations They love the idea of keeping others in line, yet ensuring they retain the ability to disrupt or bend that line whenever it serves their own interest

This kind of hypocrisy is especially prevalent in the realm of governance, where power dynamics are at play on a much larger scale Politicians and government officials, for instance, often advocate for policies, laws, or moral codes that they themselves fail to follow Whether it’s preaching fiscal responsibility while mismanaging funds, calling for transparency while operating in secrecy, or demanding sacrifices from the public while enjoying privileges

One example could be America's

“Some people will Goebbels anything down!” he joked, referencing Joseph Goebbels, the deeply antisemitic Nazi propaganda minister who organized the 1938 Kristallnacht assault on Jewish families

The world’s richest man followed his Nazi puns with a post reading, “When I see the troll emoji, it’s like looking in the mirror”

President Donald Trump The disclosures on the classified documents that Trump allegedly stole from the White House and stored at Mar-a-Lago were the latest example of his faking and dissembling It was also evident when he blatantly invoked the Fifth Amendment about 450 times in a New York deposition There is minimal correlation between Trump's beliefs and his actions He does the precise things he condemns and uses to disparage his political rivals without feeling guilty about it

BIRDSOFTHESAMEFEATHER,FLOCKTOGETHER

In the same vein, Elon Musk is a figure who seems to embody a similar style of unapologetic self-interest Often described as a righthand man or ideological ally of Trump Musk projects an image of innovation yet his actions frequently contradict the values he claims to champion From firing employees in masses upon his takeover of Twitter to silencing critics on multiple platforms Musk mirrors Trump’s own

Ever since Elon Musk’s rise to fame in 1999 in his creation of Paypal, controversies have consistently followed him As his notoriety grew, so did the scale of his scandals With naming his child X Æ A-12 Musk, a decision that baffled the public, and allegations of cheating in Path of Exile 2 and Diablo 4, Musk has often been a magnet for attention

Autism will look different for each person who has it and that does not mean hate speech and gestures are a part

ACKNOWLEDGING THE IMPACT

EXCUSING ACTIONS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL CONDITIONS

Elon Musk’s supporters have argued alternately that Musk’s autism affects how he behaves in public, and that the salute was nothing much out of the ordinary

Musk revealed he had Asperger’s during a “Saturday Night Live” monologue a few years ago: that condition is now known as a presentation of autism spectrum disorder, or ASD Users argued that gestures like the one Musk made at the rally, along with acting “weird,” are symptoms of the disorder

Autism symptoms and actions that seem to be directed hate toward someone are usually two entirely distinct things as some activists and professionals may tell you First of all, autism does not justify cruelty or disrespect, whether deliberate or not Some autistic people may find it difficult to interact with others or read social cues although that does not indicate they will act in a contentious way

Jennifer Vincent a certified mental health counselor with almost 20 years of experience working with autistic and neurodivergent persons, told HuffPost that neurodivergent people are exactly like everyone else and can learn social norms, context, and the consequences of their behavior

Shea Belsky an autistic self-advocate who is Jewish, also highlighted this topic "Shame, empathy, or guilt for one's actions are not incompatible with autism" she told HuffPost "I do not think Elon was unaware of what he was doing at all"

All of this raises the question: Is the reason why people are linking Musk's gesture to autism because they think they understand how autism functions, or because they want to throw a blanket defense for Musk? After all some X users shared photos and videos of Democrats making what appeared to be the identical motion with their arms extended But others argue that these images were not of the same nature as Musk’s gesture

After asking Dawson, who suggested that it might be a mix of the two "In defense, people tend to reach for anything" she remarked "The fact that it is being discussed draws attention to a persistent misconception that has been spreading lately"

Additionally Musk did not attribute the salute to autism, which Shashoua said is telling “We have to hold people accountable for their actions and believe what we’re seeing when people demonstrate their values”

Intent does not equate to impact, regardless of any objective "It perpetuates a dangerous stereotype that autistic people are more prone to harmful behaviors to suggest that a particular person's harmful behavior, whether intentional or not, should be excused because of their autism" Vincent told HuffPost Understanding the Difference of Pure Excuse

Excuses often serve as shields, deflecting accountability from harmful actions by shifting focus onto external factors In Elon Musk’s case, some supporters have sought to excuse his controversial behavior, including his alleged Nazi salute, by pointing to his autism diagnosis However this line of reasoning not only undermines the severity of his actions but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes about neurodivergent individuals

This pattern of deflecting blame reflects a deeper problem using false character defenses as a means to excuse harmful behavior Whether it’s invoking a developmental condition or pointing fingers at others such justifications obscure the true nature of the actions and their impact Intent alone cannot absolve someone of responsibility; actions, as always, speak louder than words

Generative AI in Science: Pushing for Accountability and Transparency

I’m more frightened than interested by artificial intelligence in fact, perhaps fright and interest are not far away from one another. Things can become real in your mind, you can be tricked, and you believe things you wouldn’t ordinarily. A world run by automatons doesn’t seem completely unrealistic anymore It’s a bit chilling.” - Gemma Whelan

Source Unmedia (2023 February28) Whatexacty sChatGPTandhowdoesitwork?

https//wwwunimediatech/what-exactly-is-chatgpt-and-how-does-it-work/

LIMITATIONS TO THIS TECHNOLOGY

While ChatGPT can write responses to queries that read and sound convincing these answers are still prone to mistakes

The ability of ChatGPT, or any generative AI platform for that matter, to answer specific questions and requests is based on the information contained in the training set This information is commonly scraped from a wide variety of databases available on the internet; it can be collected from databases curated by experts or from social media sites This approach can also reflect generative AI’s major weakness

In most generative AI platforms, there is no way for the requestor to validate the information used to train the specific generative AI program Though the answer is written well and looks convincing at first glance, there is a lack of transparency about the sources of the data or their validity

As a result, generative AI can also perpetuate biases or misinformation within the training set Generative AI can incorporate misinformation into its answers with references that may or may not be real

Májovský Černý Kasal Komarc and Netuka (2023) used ChatGPT to generate a fraudulent scientific manuscript describing a clinical trial that was then reviewed by content area experts The reviews by the content area experts reported that “Overallthe generated article demonstrated a high level of technical proficiency and authenticity and “From a psychiatric expert point of view, the study could be considered groundbreaking ” (Májovský et al, 2023) Despite the glowing praise, the reviewers also noticed specific mistakes It was also noted that of the 17 references cited, 4 were found to be nonexistent, and 2 were contextually incorrect

To the untrained eye, these mistakes may be difficult to detect It’s not just humans having difficulty some tools designed to detect AI-generated material can also look past these errors An analysis of their ChatGPT-generated manuscript using 2 AI detector programs reported either inconclusive or unclear evidence that the manuscript was AI-generated (Májovský et al, 2023)

The internet has quickly become the number one source of information One search is all it takes for pages upon pages to appear right at your fingertips The information that has become readily available for people, along with the ability to process human language, have become the foundation of generative Artificial Intelligence Generative AI is characterized by algorithms that create content (text or image) using machine learning technology

With the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, it has quickly become a household name because of its wideranging abilities ChatGPT, only one of many generative AI platforms, has the ability to provide short paragraphs, lengthy stories, summarized manuscripts, and poems that mimic the creative mind of humans

POTENTIAL TO POSITIVELY IMPACT SCIENCE

Despite the aforementioned limitations, there are several areas in which generative AI has great potential utility in science One such aspect is using programs like ChatGPT to improve the writing of manuscripts, speed up routine administrative tasks, and ultimately help in efficiently writing manuscripts (Van Noorden and Perkel 2023)

With its ability to decode and comprehend human language generative AI can assist non-native Englishspeaking scientists in writing their manuscripts This step towards innovation represents an opportunity to help the dissemination of new studies and improve efficiencies throughout the process of publication Additionally, Parrilla (2023) proposed that Generative AI is of benefit to writing research grants as it lessens the burden of grant writing

ASK THE EXPERTS

Experts have raised concerns that generative AI programs will have a negative impact on the scientific community– in scientific manuscripts, the peer review process and ultimately the quality of scientific publications

Despite the debates, generative AI is already being used by scientists in different ways In a survey of 1600 scientists conducted by Nature, the limitations of AIgeneration was recognized 50% stated that the results of using AI tools can promote bias or discrimination, 55% stated that fraud would be easier and 53% stated that the use of these tools leads to more irreproducible research (Van Noorden and Perkel, 2023)

Despite the overwhelming negative reception, 40% of the scientists who used generative AI in their research found it useful compared with 18% who were not using generative AI Approximately 75% of current users and 40% of nonusers of generative AI felt that using it in their work in the next 10 years will become essential and very useful

THE CONCERN OF TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

Guillaume Cabanac provides the strongest evidence that the use of generative AI in scientific publications needs to be directly addressed

In his work, Cabanac has discovered the undeclared use of ChatGPT or other generative AI in over 12 articles published in peer-reviewed journals since April 2023 They were not so sneaky as many of these papers were detected owing to the authors failure to delete generative AI tag lines like “regenerate response,” whereas others were detected because of referencing nonexistent sources

These findings confirm that generative AI has found its place in the scientific community This begs the concern of transparency and accountability for its use

MEASURES TO ADDRESS THESE ISSUES

With this becoming an issue in the scientific community, many scientific journals have began implementing standards to address AIgeneration

An example is that all authors must document their contributions to the work and possible or real conflicts of interest must be declared by all authors Most journals have stated that ChatGPT or other generative AI programs cannot be listed as authors Only humans can be held accountable for their published work, and equivalently, they must be held accountable for any mistakes when using generative AI

In developing their approach to the role of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) JID Innovations will introduce specific requirements that they aim to make authors, editors, and reviewers fully aware of the challenges and benefits of generative AI tools JID Innovations will also mandate accountability in their end goal to improve transparency about how generative AI is being used in scientific literature

These currently instituted measures, among many others, are designed to improve the transparency of methods and accountability of authors for their work AI-generative platforms’ rapid growth and their potential for both positive and negative impacts in science must continue to push the scientific community to take steps to mitigate the potential harm of generative AI on scientific literature

TAKING ACCOUNTABILITY AND IMPROVING TRANSPARENCY

Though nobody can be cerain of how generative AI will impact the future of science and the publication of scientific discoveries, it is apparent that the current era of technology is at the early stages of the interaction of scientific publications and generative AI Thus, it it is with the collective duty of the community to be fully engaged with the development of generative AI and how it is used, and will continue to be used, in science

This requires extensive measures to regulate the use of generative AI in scientific literature and the adherence to these policies It is up to the scientists, the regular users– the community– to work together in ensuring that it does not damage the integrity and quality of what is published in scientific literature Continuous efforts to push towards taking accountability and improving transparency are necessary to guide individual evaluation and informed use of generative AI

Fitness Made Accessible: Examining Smartwatch Utilization in Healthcare

There is no doubt that digital technology has comfortably made its way into our lives

Access to technology has never been easier with the creation of wearable technology– combining the utility of electronic gadgets and the style of modern fashion Tech start-ups and multi-million companies have invested in developing wearable technology to successfully gain access into consumers markets The “wearables” market is forecasted to grow around USD 142 4 billion by 2030 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 12 5% between 2023 and 2030

The success of wearable devices especially smartwatches, is no surprise, with its high marketability and versatile applications, especially in the field of healthcare With the continuous proliferation of wearable devices in clinics, they have the potential to assist healthcare providers with the necessary information to improve the quality of health care, facilitate clinical workflow, manage and treat patients remotely, gather more health data, and ultimately, provide worthwhile care to patients

INCREASING ADOPTION OF SMARTWATCHES IN HEALTHCARE

Given the small scale of wearable devices, it is still a marvel with how technologically refined they are These devices adopt the sophisticated technologies of biosensors and wireless data communication that allow the wearer to access and transmit information With the functionality of miniaturized biosensors capable of wireless communication, these devices are intended to be non-invasive monitoring technologies for autonomous transmission of physiological data

Through these devices, consumers now have easy access to personalized medical data reports, which could be useful in preventing, monitoring, and treating diseases Numerous patients referred to as “e-patients” have become empowered by the rise of smartwatches to actively engage in self-care and advocate for the health of others

APPLICATIONS OF SMARTWATCHES: MONITORING STRESS LEVELS

Affective computing, as one of the primary branches in human-computer interaction can be used for various purposes to detect a person’s emotional state These purposes include monitoring the stress of drivers detecting and alleviating the stress of passengers, monitoring the stress levels of employees, and assisting psychologists with online therapy sessions

To accurately measure stress instruments must be non-invasive and unobtrusive Recent technologies are able to non-invasively detect physiological phenomenons such as heart rate variability (HRV), one of the best-known signals for stress detection

APPLICATIONS OF SMARTWATCHES: SLEEP TRACKING

APPLICATIONS OF SMARTWATCHES: BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a condition where the pressure in blood vessels is too high Recent smartwatch technology aims to combat this condition that is commonly plaguing patients

Different studies have tested the blood pressure (BP)-tracking capabilities of smartwatches

A study by Falter (2022) where patients’ blood pressure were measured using an automatic cuff-based sphygmomanometer and a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 smartwatch calibrated at inclusion The results of this study show that the smartwatch suffered from an anchoring point that is set during calibration, resulting in an overestimation of lower BPs and an underestimation of higher BPs

Commercial smartwatches have the potential for healthy behavior modifications through 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (24-h BP), dynamic BP variability, and heart rate monitoring However, there is insufficient evidence to support their use in improving the management of hypertension

THE NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT

Smartwatch technology has indeed become advanced However, it is apparent that these watches have been designed with convenience in mind rather than to help with medical diagnosis Recent studies detail how smartwatches’ potential in detecting medical symptoms are limited due to poor precision and accuracy

Sleep apnea is a sleep-related disorder that disrupts breathing and is associated with various health concerns Currently the diagnostic system for this disorder is costly, resulting in limited accessibility This presents an opportunity for inobtrusive smartwatch technology

ApneaDetector is a smartwatch-based system developed by a group of researchers (Chen et al, 2021) that uses built-in sensors to detect sleep apnea How this works is the system processes raw accelerometer data using calibration techniques and signal denoising to observe breathing cycles and possible sleep disturbances

A clinical sleep study conducted at Penn State Milton S Hershey Medical Center with 20 subjects using the ApneaDetector smartwatch revealed that while the system accurately classified normal and sleep apnea events, it encountered issues with more specific categorizations such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hypopnea

There are also concerns over the trustworthiness of smartwatches due to the ambiguity of their algorithms and varying results in diagnosing clinical symptoms As a result, demand for clinical assistants that rely on AI within the health network has increased These assistants would be able to offer more trustworthy and precise data while also being better equipped to handle the intricacies that are necessary in healthcare

For these devices to gain wide acceptance by healthcare professionals, continuous research on their accuracy, completeness, and effect on workflow should be conducted before smartwatch technology is properly integrated into clinical practice Further studies of their use in clinical settings is necessary to develop more sophisticated smartwatch models
