Community Health Ambassadors

Reference: Community Health Ambassadors Dear Faith Based or Community Based Leader, The mission of Community Outreach, Engagement & Equity is to eliminate cancer disparities and promote health equity within the Duke Cancer Institute’s catchment area. We accomplish this mission through: (1) Community Outreach and Engagement, (2) Community-Facing Navigation, (3) Health Disparities Education, and (4) Clinical Trials Education and Workplace Diversity. To help with this mission, the Duke Cancer Institute Community Outreach, Engagement & Equity developed a Community Health Ambassador Program designed to train, educate, and provide support to members of faith and community based organizations to assist us in reducing health disparities in several underserved populations. For success, it is important to have a motivated, trusted, knowledgeable, and committed community member deliver accurate health information. Many studies have demonstrated that Community Health Workers have a significant impact in helping communities become and stay healthier. Therefore, we have invested time and resources training Community Health Ambassadors and have agreed to a continued partnership to support them. We hope that you will support them in developing a health program for your organization, because it will take a collaborative effort to produce positive and sustainable changes to improve the health of our community members throughout North Carolina. As the Assistant Director for Community Outreach, Engagement & Equity, I look forward to collaborating, supporting, and celebrating the amazing things that your Community Health Ambassador will do for the people your organization serve. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions about our program. Sincerely,

Angelo Moore, PhD, RN, NE-BC Program Manager, Office of Health Equity Duke Cancer Institute

Peggy Tatum and Amanda Mandy successfuly completed 4 hours Community Ambassador training through the Office of Health Equity on December 14-15, 2021.

Thank you

It was a great experience working with you and the Gut Patrol team. Through working on the Gut Patrol project, I was able to learn professionalism, and it gave me an opportunity to work with professionals and experts in their relative fields which I may not have gotten otherwise. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to help other families prevent or detect their cancers early. In the future, I hope to receive an interdisciplinary education from a great school and continue to participate in efforts like Gut Patrol and scientific research! Through these opportunities, I hope to combine scientific research and non-profit projects to bring about change in the healthcare system of developing countries. I hope to stay in touch in the future and possibly work together again!
