month of September has been a blessing in my surroundings. I have seen tremendous unity in our communities and I’m proud and honored that The Community Press is part of it. Thank you, Edcouch, Elsa, La Villa, Monte Alto and Raymondville Communities, for setting the example for the residents.

One of the memories for the month of Sept. that has been engraved in my heart is the Ceremony for Staff Sgt. Estevan Altamirano Street naming in Edcouch. Estevan was a graduate of Edcouch-Elsa High school and had deployed four times while serving the military for eleven and a half years. He passed away overseas in 2001.

Thank you City of Edcouch staff/volunteers and VFW Post 7473 for preparing and making this event happen.

If you have the time or energy to give back, please do so. Giving back to communities leads to Unity and growth which makes our environment better for our children.

I would also like to say Happy Birthday to one of my Best Friends Desi Perez! Thanks for being a good friend and a great mother to your kids!

3. Do not open email from unknown sources.

Delete email from unknown sources. Watch out for files attached to e-mails, particularly those with an “exe” extension – even if people you know sent them to you. Some files transport and distribute viruses and other programs that can permanently destroy files and damage computers and web sites. Do not forward e-mail if you are not completely sure that any attached files are safe.

4. Use hard-to-guess passwords and keep them private.

Do not write passwords down on small pieces of paper taped to your computer. You would be surprised how many people are sloppy about keeping their passwords private.

Passwords that are easy to guess are a bad choice. In other words, if your name is “Dan” do not make your password “Dan.” Change your passwords regularly and don’t give your passwords to anyone! Tell your family that

combinations of letters, numbers and symbols are harder to crack than just words. It is extremely important to have strong passwords.

5. Protect computers with firewalls.

Install firewalls for your family – it is not difficult, and they are included with most routers.

A firewall helps prevent hackers from breaking into your computer or the computers that belong to your family. Firewalls help prevent thieves from stealing and using private information including your phone number and credit card numbers, which may be stored on a family computer.

6. Do not share access to your computers with strangers.

Learn about file sharing risks.

Your computer operating system may allow other computers on a network, including the Internet, to access the hard-drive of your computer in order to “share files.” This ability to share files can be used to infect your computer with a virus or look at the files on your computer if you do not pay close attention. Check your operating system and other programs to help files learn how to disable file sharing. Do not

share access to your computer with strangers!

7. If practical, disconnect from the Internet when not in use.

The Internet is a two-way road. You get information and also send information. “Turning off” the Internet connection ensures that someone else on the Internet can’t enter your computer and cause harm or steal information. Disconnecting your computer from the Internet when you are not online lessens the chance that someone will be able to access your computer.

8. Back-up your computer regularly.

Help your family back-up all household computers onto external media such as CD’s, DVDs, or external hard drives.

9. Regularly download security protection update “patches”.

Security flaws are regularly found in operating systems and application software. Companies make software release quick fixes called “patches” or “updates” that you should install to correct the latest software flaw. It is a good idea to check for security updates on the publisher’s web site for all the software you own.

10. Help your family to check computer security on a regular basis.

Evaluate computer security at least twice a year. To help remember, do it when you change the clocks for daylight-savings time! Check for all of the items listed previously.

Edcouch-Elsa Early College makes twenty-six schools that STC has partnered with. Dr. Reed’s vision is to offer all children in our region guidance and support through early college programs and STC. She further elaborates, “This is a great day, a historic event. “ She goes on to encourage Edcouch-Elsa ISD to apply for a waiver so that the entire high school can be an Early College School. She believes every child should have this opportunity; every teacher should be prepared to teach Early College.

The participants and audience were honored to have Ruben Cortez, member of the State Board of Education, direct the assembled group. He spoke to the class of 2018 saying, “You are the leaders of the first cohort who will show future students what Early College can offer. Today Edouch-Elsa joined a group of educational leaders.”

RGV Leadership announces class of 2015 RIO GRANDE VALLEY – RGV Leadership named 25 community and business leaders to its first-ever leadership program class that begins this fall.

The Class of 2015 is a strong cross section of established and emerging leaders from all corners of the Valley that have shown great interest in focusing on issues from a regional perspective and working with colleagues and counterparts from across South Texas.

RGV Leadership, which is part of the Rio Grande Partnership, kickstarted the program to help prepare Valley leaders for a regional future. The Valley has shown recently that only by working together it can leverage life-changing projects such as the University of Texas Medical School, Interstate highway connections and the Space X commercial launch facility.

RGV Chairwoman Deborah Cordova said the days of Valley cities working all alone are nearly history.

“Nearly every economic study out there – as well as the business community – tells us that regions must work well together to bring industry, create jobs and improve quality of life,” said Cordova.

“The Partnership sees it as its role to prepare our emerging leaders by working together, focusing on issues with a regional lens and just simply getting to know each other.”

She added that the group throughout its nine monthly meetings will study several very important topics to the region such as water, economic development, security, government and tourism.

The program, patterned after other leadership programs throughout the state, was announced earlier this year with an application deadline of Aug. 1, 2014. Applicants were chosen by a selection committee and had to meet several requirements. The first meeting will take place on South Padre Island the last weekend in September and will focus on leadership.

Macedonia was born on September 12, 1929, to Eulogio Chairez and Gregoria Macias Chairez. She is preceded in death by her husband Carlos Solis, her parents, and sons Jose Guadalupe and Ruben Solis. She is survived by her sons Manuel (Imelda), Rene (Linda), Adan (Ana) Solis and daughters Maria Esperanza (Reyes) Garza and Hilda (Tomas) Garcia, daughter in-laws Adelina and Caridad, 24 grandchildren, 49 Great-Grandchildren and 7 Great-Great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held on Thursday, September 11, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. a Holy rosary at 7:00 p.m.

Edcouch-Illegal dumping has become an increasingly sizeable problem throughout the country, state, county and the small town of Edcouch. According to David Alanis, Director of Operations and Public Works for the city of Edcouch, offenders keep dumping in the same sites after city officials clean up. “People dump over and over again in the same spot.” He specifies that a particular favorite haunt of dumpers is on Pacific, west of the Industrial Park. Offenders often dump late at night to circumvent the cost and inconvenience of proper waste disposal.

Illegal dumping poses a threat to a community’s drinking water supply. Many people dump directly into a waterway which works its way into the community’s source of water supply. Illegal dumping adversely affects quality of drinking water and creates health and sanitation perils.

Types of trash typically found in illegal dumpsites include automobile tires, old appliances, furniture, construction and remodeling debris, and of course, household trash. Alanis says “Tires are frequently found in makeshift dumping grounds.”

Illegal dumping decreases property values and injures community pride. Alanis urges Edcouch citizen to “keep their eyes open to try to see who is dumping illegally.” He urges citizens to report suspicious vehicles laden with branches or tires to the Edcouch Police Department. “We can only do so much as employees, so we are asking the public to help us clean up Edcouch by reporting those illegally dumping in our area.”

Take the first step to reverse the trend of illegal dumping and report those who do. Let’s get rid of our trash the appropriate way and clean up our community.

The Edcouch-Elsa Rotary on Wednesday during their regular meeting honored the VFW post 7473 of Elsa Tx. The Rotary gave an appreciation plaque for the service and sacrifice that the veterans have given for the defense of our country. Early College High School Principal, Miguel Castillo, coordinated the event which was a great success. People from all walks of life met today with a common goal – educating the children of Edcouch-Elsa High School.

Once again, Edcouch-Elsa ISD has demonstrated that it is indeed “ a district on the rise.” Although the district does excel in sports and though the fans definitely support La Maquina Amarilla, the district strives to do well in academics as well.
