Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp takes self-expression

of Aghaa’ Hat Co., grew up in California and attended New York Fashion Institute of

Technology. It was there she hand-crafted her first hat.

“A friend and I went to the hat making district

steam them and use hat blocks. From there, I looked up videos on how to make them and

that’s how I ended up with my first hat. Then

After her friends became her first clients, she

While going through treatment, she has been working on custom

“I make-to-order, so part of the client goes into how the hat looks,”

she says. “They choose the band and style. When they try it on, of course I want it to fit well, but I want them to feel like it’s part of them.”

“Hat making was very much a male-dominated field,” she says. “When I first started, the United States had reported only eight [women] hat makers in the country. It’s slowly gained more popularity, and I’ve seen

more women embracing and taking the craft on. When I’m making

My friend is a weaver and has weaved for me, and my friend Claudia is a jeweler and has made several pieces for me too.”

Although her brick-and-mortar location closed, Guitierrez-Krapp has plans for future opportunities with her business.

Can you tell us about your industry and what inspired you to pursue this career?

I was drawn to the field of nursing – specifically the advanced practice role of a nurse practitioner – because I wanted to make a real difference in people’s lives. While working as a bedside nurse in an acute care setting for women, I realized I had a strong passion for preventive care and patient education. What fulfills me most is building trusting relationships with patients and specializing in women’s health, which I find incredibly rewarding.

What sets your approach to your profession apart?

I believe that women deserve to be heard. That belief is what inspired me to build a practice where women feel comfortable sharing their health concerns. A recent study showed that women often see up to ten healthcare providers before receiving a menopause diagnosis. Too often, their symptoms are dismissed as stress or even imagination. This tendency to downplay women’s health concerns is a serious issue in medicine, and I strive to create a space where women are truly listened to and validated.

What do you love most about working in El Paso?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been balancing work and family life. Many business owners juggle professional and personal responsibilities, and as a single mother, I carry much of the responsibility for raising my daughter. At the same time, I’m also expected to lead and grow my business. It’s not always easy, but being committed to both roles has made me more resilient and more passionate about the work I do.

A survey in the UK of over 2,000 working women aged 40 to 60 found that 23% considered quitting their jobs due to the impact of menopause, and 14% were actively planning to resign because of their symptoms. This data underscores the importance of believing and supporting women through their health journeys. For me, success means taking women seriously, offering compassionate care, and advocating for awareness and education around menopause.

Menopause is finally becoming part of the mainstream conversation. Oprah Winfrey recently hosted a special called “The Menopause Revolution,” and the National Institute on Aging estimates that 1.3 million women in the U.S. enter menopause each year. This is a critical area of healthcare, and I encourage anyone considering a focus on hormone imbalances to pursue it wholeheartedly. Staying current with research and patient education is essential in this rapidly evolving field.

What I love most about being on the border is the unique opportunity to provide healthcare to women across three states and two countries. As a doctoral-prepared, board-certified nurse practitioner working in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, I’m able to practice to the fullest extent of my training. Serving this vibrant, cross-cultural community is both a privilege and a deeply meaningful part of my work.

As a surgical tech, my passion and love for cosmetic surgery and injecting ignited. It was always fascinating to me that we could change, correct, modify or enhance something on our bodies with surgery or a couple of syringes of neurotoxins and fillers. We all strive to be the best version of ourselves and feel comfortable and confident in our own skin and now, we can.

My role as a cosmetic injector is to safely make you feel confident, fresh, enhanced and satisfied with your neurotoxin and fillers.

Patient education along with pre- and post- treatment care, expected outcomes, progress tacking and maintaining your desired results are all categories that go along with my title that I hold to the highest integrity.

My advice to other women in this industry is to never give up or never let anyone make you feel that they are inferior or better than you. Beauty trends are constantly changing and some days I can barely keep up with the laundry, luckily with Botox and dermal fillers we are able to freeze time (or our faces) for months at a time. Trends right now like “the fox eye” or the “tinkerbell nose job” are both trends that I have performed on myself.

I’m relatable to my clients because I myself have insecurities and I would never perform a procedure on someone that I haven’t already tried on myself. I’m always practicing new fun techniques and always watching out for new trends on the rise between juggling three kids or while the clothes have been tumbled dry for the third time. At the end of the day we are all human and now we can age gracefully.

What aspects of your work excite you the most?

One of the things I enjoy most about performing my therapies, whether bodysculpting or relaxation, is seeing the calm and often surprised faces they have, not imagining they would see or feel the results from the first appointment.

Ashley has been practicing law for over 10 years and is a licensed attorney in both Texas and New Mexico.

Before joining Loncar Lyons Jenkins in 2020, Ashley represented numerous companies such as Nationwide and Walmart as an aggressive defense attorney in commercial cases with a specialty in commercial trucking and premise liability cases. After several years of practicing law in major cities across the state, Ashley moved permanently to El Paso, Texas in 2021 to become the managing attorney of the El Paso office for Loncar Lyon Jenkins.

My passion has always been decor and design. I considered it a hobby at first, and then I began dabbling in remodeling via the House Flipping arena, and from there it turned into a business. I fell more in love with the design process as I worked with different families’ design projects. The original draw for me was the flexibility that “flipping” houses gave me to be with my children outside a traditional office environment.

What sets your approach to your profession apart?

Since I began my journey in 2010, flipping homes from top to bottom, it has given me the knowledge to, truly, understand the process from beginning to end, not only selecting the finishes, but staying within budgets, and managing a crew of contractors to keep the process moving forward and at the right pace.

Clients and different home contractors must be able to speak the same language. I consider myself an intermediary or guide to get the client from A to Z, while ensuring the final product is exactly what they have envisioned, utilizing their space to fit their family’s needs and wants. My BACC in Accounting (Mississippi State University), MBA (Christian Brothers University), and MACC in Accounting (University of Texas – El Paso) allows me to provide my clients with a breakdown of a budgeted versus actual cost analysis throughout their project. Additionally, I am a Certified Interior Decorator and currently pursuing my Residential Interior Designer Program Certification (Texas State University).

Can you tell us about your industry and what inspired you to pursue this career?

Growing up, I was always involved in sports, I played volleyball and basketball, and being an athlete taught me discipline, leadership, and the power of movement. That passion led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology/ Health and Wellness at the University of Texas at El Paso. I worked two jobs while also training a few clients on the side. Fast forward to 2025, we’ve celebrated four powerful years of Work It Fitness Boutique, a space designed to uplift, challenge, and transform women from the inside out.

How do you ensure excellence in your work and a positive impact on those you serve?

We’re constantly evolving, whether that means introducing new fitness challenges, designing transformative programs like Work It Mama for postpartum women, or simply making sure each woman feels welcome the second she walks in the door.

This spring, YWCA El Paso del Norte Region

marks not one but two major milestones: the 30th Annual YWCA Women’s Luncheon

and 115 years of service to the Borderland

community. To honor the occasion, the

organization welcomed critically acclaimed actress, director, producer, and humanitarian Lucy Liu as the luncheon’s keynote speaker.

of cultures that collide, bringing us sounds

from singers like Luis Miguel or Juan Gabriel,

and others like Dolly Parton or Celine Dion.

Melodies know no boundaries, and the collision of sounds we have creates inspiration

for artists like Nana Bersa, a 23-year-old singer

who signed to Universal Music Publishing Mexico in 2023.

It’s inspiring to hear stories like Bersa’s,

Bersa released her first EP “Cariño” in 2023 while still attending UTEP to pursue a degree in media marketing and a minor in commercial music.

“I used to sing a lot, but I was really shy,” Bersa says. “One of my middle school music professors noticed I had a pretty voice and

Then in high school, I started uploading videos on Instagram, and encouragement from friends pushed me to start releasing

music on my own. I’ve now been doing this professionally for five years.”

Hers began in the sun-soaked borderlands of El Paso, Texas.

“I feel like El Paso’s a hidden gem,” she says, reflecting on the city that shaped her. “People don’t

really understand it until they come here. The peace, the vibes; it’s unexplainable.”

Thornton, now with the newly formed Golden

State Valkyries, represents a rare blend of elite athleticism, humility, and fierce hometown loyalty.

Her journey from a late-blooming basketball player at Irvin High School to WNBA champion is as inspirational as it is admirable.

Raised by her parents Lewis and Merteen Thornton, Thornton grew up in a faith-filled household with two

brothers and a love for sport. Her first passion was

track and field, where she dominated the district in the 100-meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.

But it was her quiet tenacity and raw talent on the basketball court that soon turned heads.

At Irvin High, she racked up 1,953 points and 884 rebounds, earning MVP honors and a spot in the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Game.

Despite the accolades, national attention was limited – something Thornton would change herself.

“I wanted to make a name for us,” she says. “To show that just because we come from somewhere not

often in the spotlight, it doesn’t mean we don’t have

talent. I do it for the 915 and for the kids watching.”

At UTEP, Thornton made history as the first player to average a double-double in a season (19.5 PPG,

10.1 RPG). By the time she graduated, she ranked second all-time in career double-doubles, third in rebounds, and ninth in scoring. Staying close to home, she says, was a blessing.
