l Paso’s northwest is growing exponentially and the
owners of Cedar & Vine saw the need for an exciting new restaurant to be a staple in the community. With a Mediterranean fusion-style menu and a new desert modern building by Root Architects, the interior design was encouraged to be bright, earthy, and textured so that guests would be exceedingly comfortable while enjoying the space. The hue of the ceiling is a mix of colors that were melded to create a color befitting of the Mediterranean Sea as it deepens away from the shore. The whitewash brick wall is a strong background to the earthy wood tones in the furniture, the cedar shelves at the bar, and the pebbled concrete floors. The sandy geometric marble mosaic that wraps around both the

interior and exterior of the bar offers a muted nod to the antiquated texture found in the environment around the Mediterranean coast. Light was a huge consideration in this design. Bright walls and mirrored tiles in the bar arches, as well as mirrors along the brick wall, help bounce the immense natural light around the room during the day. And while the natural light is impressive, chandeliers were chosen to serve not only to designate the seating areas in the openness but as pieces of art, dangling like decorative lanterns from the vastness of the blue ceiling. In the evening, the different fixtures create a giant candle-like glow that draws customers in with its warmth. The atmosphere is distinctly Cedar & Vine.

At first glance, the galley-style kitchen might be interpreted as the heart of a local speakeasy, and rightfully so! The overabundance of carefully selected barware is intentional, creating a mood of festive consumption, be it hand-crafted libations or non-alcoholic mocktails. A small shelf featuring the iconic mixologist bible (and my favorite cocktail book) Death & Co. can be found next to the array of glassware displayed on the wall-mounted bar cabinet. If you are inclined to brush up on your cocktail-making skills, or perhaps try something new, you won’t have to face it alone! Regardless of your drink or nibble of choice, the atmosphere says “Enjoy!” And you should. Did I mention the coffee set-up? In addition to a Moka Pot for stove-top espresso and a traditional French press, both paired with perfect grinds of local coffee, there is a full Keurig coffee bar set up for a quick cup to-go. Just as the living room establishes the overall vibe for the Casita Yandell experience, the kitchen acts as the heart of the space, connecting common areas and giving guests a place to work or host.

Vintage 60’s era bar stools serve as seating for both work and leisure, while direct and indirect lighting allows for mood control. The decorative Italian porcelain tile is repeated in the kitchen, featured on both the bar top and backsplashes. Retro-inspired appliances boost the eclectic style, adding the perfect amount of flair and functionality to the space.
Calm and Collected As colorful and diversely appointed as the styles of the living room and kitchen, the bathroom and bedroom are conversely monochromatic, subtle in décor, and visually calming. Inspired by decorative motifs that are true to the property’s era, soft hues of yellow and subtle green anchor the look, with accents of black and white featured in the bathroom tile. A traditional four-poster antique bed takes on new life with a surprising paint treatment, while a neon sign overhead reminds guests that as luxurious as the bed feels, perhaps, “it was all a dream”. Adding to the overall “dreaminess” of the bedroom is the accent lighting, including a classic gold-tone lamp table with reverse painted glass, a painted metal 50’s era floral table lamp, and a classic spiral Chula shell chandelier. Rounding out the dream is a perfect view of the private back patio, which is a dreamy space in its own right! I was sitting in the living room of Casita Yandell a few days after we shot the photos for this article.I was enjoying a cup of French press coffee with a dear friend, who happens to be a prolific residential architect and also has the most elevated taste level of anyone I know. I was nervous. As she absorbed the various layers and textures of the project, she put me at ease with her honesty and sincere words. “I’m Inspired!” There’s a lot to see in this small space of a project, and she did not miss an inch. “The details are what make it, you have taken the time to address the details.” The details! I had never considered that something so innate in my process would ultimately be so critical and actually necessary, to the success of my work. It may be the “Devil in the details” but it’s facing that design fear that can ultimately lead to creative success. Disfrutar! www.thecitymagazineelp.com
