From the elcome to the very best of 2023! Whether you’re

reading this during the last few weeks of the year, or

in 2024 (Hello, future), I think you’ll agree that 2023 was

a big year – just look at the covers!

In this issue, we recap our beautiful covers from February to

November, and reflect on the amazing El Pasoans who make

our great city even better. This year I had the pleasure of covering folks who work across many different industries –

culinary, veterinary, entertainment and sports, public relations, architecture, medicine, music, the arts, and promotion – and learned a few things along the way:

1. It’s never silly to follow your dream

2. You don’t know what you can do until you try 3. Small acts of bravery can inspire big change

4. Support systems can get you through anything 5. Always believe in yourself

As we move into 2024 and beyond, I hope we can keep these things in our mind and challenge ourselves to continue to do and be better.

El Paso continues to evolve, thanks to the work of many people and organizations who are daring to dream bigger. Take the

Borderplex Alliance, for example, which is expanding and enhancing the Borderland’s prominence on a global scale. It’s

inspiring to see, and even more exciting to be a part of – we are so lucky to feature these stories for readers.

This issue is special because it serves as a sort of time capsule, a cultural measure of our year in lifestyle.

For the Best Of this year, we have new categories that represent

the growth of the community, along with returning favorites that are emblematic of the city’s love and support of tradition. In these pages you’ll learn what people, places, and things are

catching the eyes of El Pasoans, as voted by readers, and can use the list as a resource of unmissable experiences in El Paso.

We’ve had a big year at The City Magazine, and I’m so proud of the work we’ve done as a small but mighty team with a lot

of attitude and even more creativity and commitment to showcasing the very best of El Paso.

May we be better today than we were yesterday. 14

sight to say the least. I thought, “Why in the world would this woman get her nails

painted right before our most important game in the tournament? Don’t you have better things to do?”

“look good” Our appearance can play a significant role in our self-esteem and first impressions. So

had stopped the game tying shot made by Iceland.

I guess she had a point. My team, Team Mexico, had won the Bronze

Medal in the Women’s Hockey Division II Group A World Championship.

Out of Men’s and Women’s teams in Mexico,

our women’s team is the highest ranked

group for ice hockey. Since I was 15 years

old I have been fortunate enough to play with the strongest women I know – who still paint their nails pink. I’ve learned so many great things playing with my role models, and now, I’m passing them onto you. “Look good. Feel good. Play good.” It’s all about confidence. Something many of us have heard before, and something important you may want to consider going into the new year.

This ideology is something fairly new that sparked up in today’s culture, the logic

being that if you look your best, you’ll show up feeling confident, thus, performing to the best of your ability.

about you; inside you have a feeling that you’re comfortable with yourself and your

abilities, and outside, others associate accomplishment with your confidence.

With that said, It’s important to maintain strong self-esteem, even through critical thinking.

I’ve heard many say, “you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover” but I can attest that most of us do. In order to beat the judgment, it’s

important to dress for the occasion, and show your best self.

Your appearance can influence how others

perceive you. When you present yourself in a well-mannered and attractive way, often, more people are eager to engage with you

and your ideas, leading to new opportunities, connections, and personal growth. Looking

The power of

“feel good” Just like “look good,” “feel good” goes beyond the surface. It relates to your emotional and mental well-being, which is important when

trying to experience self-improvement and perform well. Being emotionally fit is the

foundation for success at achieving your set goal. It’s hard to give a step that fits all when it

comes to being emotionally well, but what I’m trying to say is that confidence, and taking care of your body are the first steps to feeling good.

Confidence represents feeling content with

your capability to achieve your goal. When you feel confident in your abilities. You can conquer the world.

Taking care of your body can be described by two key aspects: sleeping, and eating

F

or former Dallas Cowboys quarterback,

Tony Romo, football, like life, is about

timing. Spending time in preparation for

achievement so that when the opportunity comes, you may take it and run.

Like Romo, for Chris Hanna, a local

filmmaker, greatness is all about timing. Hanna’s documentary, “Now or Never: A

Tony Romo Story” is about more than the

football star’s career as a professional athlete. Rather, it’s a film about a journey of

perseverance, ambition, and identity as a Mexican-American.

Hanna was born in El Paso and raised in Ciudad Juarez until eighth grade. He says

his love of film and television preceded his

love of football, which he became immersed in once he returned to El Paso.

“My interest in football really started when I came back to El Paso, and it was like everybody was a Dallas Cowboys fan,” he

says. “I had no idea what was going on. I got

into football through my uncle and then the rest is history.”

Romo is a third generation MexicanAmerican, whose career as the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys cemented him as one of the most accomplished Latino athletes in

American history. The Dallas Cowboys has

the largest Latino fan base within the NFL, which remains a celebrated culture and source of pride in places like El Paso.

Hanna says his uncle not only rooted for

the Dallas Cowboys, but also followed Romo’s career extensively, which made an

This was a game changing step in the right direction for the filmmakers after being discouraged back at school.

Hanna had to pitch his thesis as part of the curriculum, and was confronted with the ugliness of bias from a professor.

“What makes me think that a kid from El Paso would get this opportunity with Tony Romo?” she asked, then said he had about a 50/50 chance.

“I’d take those odds in Vegas,” replied Hanna. Undeterred – in fact, more determined than ever – Hanna headed to Romo’s football camp.

“I arrived at the camp with all my stuff and saw Tony throwing to the kids and was just starstruck. Then the coaches came up to me and

“I had a list of about 100 questions and only 15 minutes!” laughs Hanna.

Romo arrived and they started the interview. After 45 minutes, the two were still talking.

The interview with his idol went well, then Romo connected Hanna to more people in his life to help bolster the film.

“We interviewed his father. We also got to go to Dallas to interview

his grandparents, which was special because we got to capture his grandfather before he went on to pass away in 2020,” says Hanna.

The film was first screened in Burlington, and Romo enjoyed it so much that he offered to help Hanna promote during their film festival run.

After the premiere, Romo made a comment that will stick with Hanna forever.

s El Paso’s culinary landscape continues to grow, the imprint of a local restaurateur is as recognizable as her food is cravings-inducing. Meet Tania Peregrino, Creative Director and Co-Founder of Don Carbon

and Amar, who is feeding the Sun City while also fueling

culinary innovation and inspiring younger generations of future restaurant owners.

Don Carbon, the Peregrino family’s restaurant that boasts tender mesquite grilled chicken, traditional sides, burgers, and more, celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2023 as

the family reflects upon a decade of success and the work it took to achieve.

Peregrino, her father Humberto, mother Gysel, and brother

Kevin have been in the kitchen, managing employees, and enthusiastically greeting customers from Don Carbon’s

original location while the business expanded to more than five locations that span from Horizon to the Upper Valley over the last decade.

For the Peregrino family, feeding the community’s appetite for quality food that embodies the culture is a main ingredient.

“El Paso is a very important metroplex in many aspects because of the eclectic blend of two wonderful cultures,”

says Peregrino. “Everything in our city is special, our food, slang, our weather, which is always a surprise. It’s never boring, but most important is our people: I have lived in other cities and all I can say is that El Paso is

attending to guests, playful barks and pants from dogs excited to be walked by volunteers, and the chatter of animal lovers as they wait their turn. Outside, a gaggle

of excited soon-to-be dog owners gather to greet each other and give pets to each person’s puppy. There are seven little-legged dachshunds total, littermates who were

They’re led to an O.R. to see Dr. Anthony Chacon, the new veterinarian at Animal Services, who is multitasking by giving the weenie dogs his approval to be adopted as he tends to one-two-three-four-five-six cats under anesthesia and prepped to be spayed or neutered.

Another busy morning in the life of the veterinarian who saves dozens of lives each day and simultaneously addresses the needs of the community’s adoptable and unhomed animals.

“I always wanted to find a way to help animals, regardless of how I did it,”

he says. “So that was always the drive for me. And I just had to figure out a way to do that.”

“I started Barracuda Public Relations in 2010,” she says. “It was me, the laptop, my kitchen table and a friend who worked with

me. We’ve always been a city with potential, but I could tell we were actually about to grow into our potential. And I thought it was the right time to start this type of business.”

Monsisvais isn’t afraid to take a leap of faith -- she dives right in. “I’m the kind of person that’s always started things but

Monsisvais grew up as a self-proclaimed free range kid in

Cigarettes After Sex is an indie rock band formed by Greg Gonzalez in El Paso that has become a global success and source of pride for the Borderland. The band’s namesake evokes the intimacy of the music’s emotional subject matter: at times breathy and cathartic, and other times smoldering and restless. The band’s catalog has sold more than 2.5 million records, amassing 3 billion Spotify streams, more than 17

he tells me over Zoom from Miami in between rehearsals

___________ BEST DOCT

OR

Thank you for voting Dr. Mohammed R. Alnajjar, MD as the Best Doctor in the City!

Dr.

Mohammed Alnajjar has been serving the greater El Paso area as an internal medicine physician who focuses on diabetes, lipid disorders, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Alnajjar moved to El Paso, Texas after completing his training at Cornell University affiliated hospitals in New York. Dr. Alnajjar has been an asset in the El Paso medical community for the last 23 years, where he specializes in adult care, geriatrics, obesity and thyroid disorders. He has positively impacted the lives of thousands of patients. This is Dr. Alnajjar’s third time being voted “Best Doctor” in El Paso, which is a testament to his positive contributions to the community, as well as his patients’ gratitude. “I want to express my thanks to El Paso residents who have voted me into this wonderful position,” he says. “I wouldn’t be here without my El Paso community votes and support.” A positive attitude and keen interest in healing patients, as well as putting patients care first, are of vital importance to Dr. Alnajjar and his staff. His belief in these fundamental principles is the key to his success.

2023 was a significant year for Dr. Alnajjar and his staff, which marked the return of in-person patient care following the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Alnajjar and his staff are looking forward to 2024 with the goal of growing on the excellent care they have been providing. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

“Over the past few years, our staff has become closer with patients, which is something that is not often seen. We appreciate our patients and want to thank them for voting us ‘Best Doctor’ again in El Paso for 2023! We hope to continue providing care with our proven passion for years to come!” - Lupe Morales, Office Manager 67

Sarah Byrne, Byrne Flips (901) 605-4010 sarahemily18@yahoo.com byrne-flips.com 5400 Tierra Vista Lane, 79932 bryne_flips_designs What do you specialize in?

I’ve been remodeling for 13 years now. I love doing flips, an entire house, start to finish, but I am also doing interior design work. In some cases,I have also been doing some new builds and additions in addition to the design portion, which is dependent on what my client needs.

What sets you apart as a woman in business?

I always had a passion for design and remodeling, bbut ended up getting my Accounting and Taxation Degrees instead of Interior Design. About 10 years ago, I decided to take the risk and really start doing what truly love. I’ve been so blessed that it’s going well – it doesn’t feel like work when you’re doing what you love!!!

Why should readers turn to you for their business needs?

E WINN E R

I set myself apart from other designers in my relationships and my contacts from basically being a General Contractor for my own flip ER GN BES projects and knowing the Design side T INTERIOR DESI and the Building and Construction side. Additionally, with my Accounting background, I can offer my clients a detailed cost sheet and continous tracking and analysis of their budget vs actual costs on their projects.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job and serving the local community? The best part of what I do is being able to work for myself and spend time with my kids, having that flexibility doing what I love. It’s always rewarding to see my clients happy with the results and collaborating with them to get the perfect look they want to achieve.

RIM ROAD A year after the tragedy of 9/11, New Yorkers, Jorge

Perez-Vinalet and his wife Yvette Fry-Perez, made the

decision to leave the chaos of the big city to move to her

hometown of El Paso, Texas. After many years of working

in New York, the power couple had both become recognized leaders

in their respective fields. She, as the owner of Yvette Fry, Inc., a highly successful showroom for cutting edge, contemporary and classic

jewelry and accessories; and he, as a savvy advertising executive and creative director for two of the world’s most successful advertising agencies, Young and Rubicam and Saatchi and Saatchi.

In spite of their thriving careers, twin daughters Ruby and Lola, who were only a year old at the time of 9/11, were the inspiration that

propelled the creative couple to want to move to a safer and more peaceful environment in which to raise their young girls.

Upon making the decision to move back to El Paso, Yvette called on

her longtime friend, Park Kerr, to tell him about their decision. Park and his then wife, architect Martina Lorey, started looking for homes

in Kern Place and the surrounding area that might appeal to the prolific couple.

Just a short distance up the street from their own house, Park and Martina found a property at the top of Rim Road, that, although in need of a great deal of work, still had a good foundation and what Yvette describes simply as “beautiful bones.”

Upon hearing the news of a house that might suit them, Jorge

and Yvette quickly jumped on a plane to El Paso, toured the property, and decided that this would, indeed, be the perfect place for their new address.

Yvette, had for many years been an admirer of the work of the late, iconic Mexican architect, Luis Barragan, whose genius in the

realms of color, light, walls, interior design, and landscaping had greatly influenced her preferred style of architecture. She and Jorge

describe Barragan’s style as “Mexican Modern,” and thought this signature look would suit their new house perfectly. Martina, who

was of a generation of current architects familiar with Barragan’s work, couldn’t have agreed with them more. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

That influence included her keen eye for natural and authentic

materials, good detailing, and an ability to embrace the uniqueness of the surrounding site.

Lorey’s vision exceeded all expectations. She designed a spacious floor plan that allowed the family to move about effortlessly, as each room flowed seamlessly from one area to the next. She planned and curated the interior design as well,

with many of the pieces being custom made throughout the space. A large round display kitchen was created in the heart of the

design, while other things were taken away, walls thickened, glass doors made taller, and more windows were placed throughout for

the added drama of light and to take advantage of the majestic mountain view nearby.

The exterior isn’t aggressive, but rather somewhat anonymous. Unexpectedly, as the day moves towards night, subtle changes in the

quality of light occur, which can transform the exterior of the home from a subtle shade of crimson red to a dark warm, almost pinkish

tone. Intriguing shadow casting in the front of the house is created

as the sunlight passes through the pergola. Geometric patterns are painted into the landscape, making the clean architectural lines transform into seemingly sculptural influences.

Lorey is known for having the ability to create designs that seamlessly influence how people live.

The twins are both grown now, nearing completion of college back East, and ready to embark on their respective career paths.

Jorge and Yvette conversely, have decided it’s time for the next

chapter in their lives as well, and have set their sights on moving to Santa Fe, in the not too distant future.

When asked what the couple has enjoyed the most about their Rim Road dwelling,

Jorge, without hesitation said, “It’s the great

memories that were made here. This has been such a happy home for us and the

us forever.” Yvette added, “We really do love

it here, and wish this house was available in a smaller size somewhere, but it’s not.”

With that being said, the two of them smile at
