GOVERNOR’S SMALL BUSINESS SUMMIT–GALVESTON/GULF COAST

The Governor’s Small Business Summit–Galveston/Gulf Coast will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 18 and is hosted in partnership with the Galveston County Small Business Development Center, Vision Galveston, Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Workforce Commission.

This event aims to help Texas small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs reach new heights by connecting them with the resources and information needed to start, strengthen and grow a business. This event offers

a variety of sessions bringing together local, state and federal resource partners to provide key insights on critical business topics. It’s also an opportunity to network with other business owners and meet experts who will share timely, relevant and actionable advice on a multitude of small business subjects. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

The TCLM Chamber Young Professionals Network met May 14 for a lunch-and-learn. Everyone in attendance heard from Terry Pettijohn, of Mainland Toastmasters, about “Leadership in Communication.” Thank you to everyone who intended and enjoyed this insightful event. A special thank you goes out to Gator’s Bar & Grill for providing lunch for the guests.

The next Young Professionals meeting will be an after-hours speed networking event from 5:30 p.m. to 8

p.m., Thursday, June 13 at Del Papa Distributing Company. Young professionals will have the chance to speed network with community leaders who have experiences worth sharing. LEADERSHIP MAINLAND NON-PROFIT DAY

Leadership Mainland spent the day visiting different non-profits in the Galveston County area. Members spent their morning at the Galveston County Food Bank where they helped pack and sort more than 40 boxes worth of groceries and canned goods.

After this, they had lunch at United Way Galveston County Mainland and heard Leslie Ornelas, CEO of UWMGC and fellow leadership classmate, speak about all the great things the organization is doing for the community.

The class then visited The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Texas City where they took a tour of the facilities.

The Leadership Mainland class spent the last part of its day at the TCLM Chamber of Commerce building, where Higher Up Texas, Anchor Point Family Network, Bay Area Turning Point, CASA of Galveston County, M. I. Lewis Social Service Center, Providence Outreach Ministries and The Independence Village spoke and visited with the class!

WOMEN IN BUSINESS NETWORKING LUNCHEON

The Women in Business networking group met May 23 and heard from guest speaker Amy Reid, of the Galveston County Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The theme was “Beyond Boundaries: Women Redefining Leadership” and was sponsored by Galveston County SBDC. Reid spoke about the transformative power of leadership. She taught the group how to shift from a task-oriented mindset to a vision-driven mindset. The group members participated in a few exercises where they built their own leadership vision statement. Then members participated in a group activity where they came up with ideas to have a successful future in their current place of work.

The next Women in Business Luncheon will be Wednesday, June 19 at Blue Lagoon Bar & Grill at Lago Mar. This event will be the second annual pop-up event. Visit and shop with local women-owned businesses and network with other women in business.

SHRIMP FEST + THE DAILY NEWS PRESS RUN TEXAS CITY

Beginning of summer celebrated at the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce’s Shrimp Fest + The Daily

The community-wide Shrimp Fest and The Daily News Press Run

Texas City had more than 500 guests in attendance at the May 18 combined event at the Showboat Pavilion on the historic Downtown 6th Street in Texas City. The Daily News kicked off the 2nd annual Press Run Texas City in the morning. Promptly after the race ended, delicious shrimp and jambalaya plates were prepared and served by Bergeron Crawfish Catering, sponsored by the City of Texas City and Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery.

Everyone in attendance heard live music from Tejano band, Uptown

Mixx Band, zydeco band, Ruben Moreno and country band, Philip Griffin Band. Attendees and their children also enjoyed playing in the kid’s zone and shopping at the Shrimp Fest Market, full of top-end vendors and food trucks. A fun crowd all combined to create a memorable evening!
