Garbage Village

/Collage Practic

This academic project aims to rearrange the idle space under an expressway. By proposing the new mechanism, the residual space of a city can be revitalized. This project tries to move the marginalized to the urban center, and the hidden to the spotlight. Thus, different groups can share mutual understanding at the node of a historical city.

The function of both side of the site is changed. The artists leave the cultural park because of the rising rent that only commercial company can afford. And the old book and CD store is replaced by the 3Cs. This project would like to bring back the things which are no longer here.

This project pull back the things that disappeared, and create many different scale cycles both within and without the site. With the progress of the technology, the life span of the product becomes shorter and shorter. To the west of the site, a cultural & creative park makes a ton of paper trash produced by the temporary exhibitions. To the east of the site, a 3C department store encourages people to change their 3C products more frequently. Collecting the wastes such as glass, paper, wood and 3C items from all the neighborhood and provide a place and a chance for people to see the waste and reuse it.

This place will be used by different groups. The homeless will bring the recyclable garbage to the north part of the site, exchanging the trash for money and starting the mechanic work. After dividing and first-hand processing, the trash will be moved to different factories by a small train at around 9 am. Tourists, students and visitors will come to talk to the artists at different plazas, such as the glass, the paper, and the 3c recycling plaza. Through these process the citizen can start to understand how much garbage they made and understand how to make it valuable again. The three plazas link the spaces which is separated by the expressway and creat new way to approach it.

Tainan train station works people. I try to use some phenomenon. One place different group of people.

For different groups, a place can have different usages. Two very distinctive uses can be found at the train station. This project tries to give some suggestions and turn the place for multiple uses. A train station can also be recognized as a free hotel for the homeless and some poor passengers. And a weird parking lot in the middle of the road can provide a possibility for people gethering.

In this collage practice, I notice that this kind of method can solve the problems that too many groups compete in one place and that user behaviors have bad influences on others. Thus, This project try to find this kind of space in our city, and figure out that space around Hai-an road is a typical form. This project would like to use the method to organize new usages for Hai-an road where seems to be a huge gap in Tainan city.

Different Time Different Groups

Many different group live on and occupy the site. There are mainly four groups: Residents, Worshipers, Vendors and Tourists. Their activity intensity is different in different places and time. However, there are still places facing the conflicts among different groups - this is the main problem for the project. Two blocks between Hai-an road are the location of an old port. As the soil deposited in the ancient river, the landscape changed. One of the most important difference is that the market in front of the temple became to extensive. Another is that the Hai-an road has be widened, damaging the old urban context. The three temples always are the religious centre of this place, and the opposite of the market becomes tourist-orientated.

There are two parts of the project: deconstruction and reconstruction. First, hollowing out the overcrowded field and creating empty field. The houses removed from the blocks will be placed at the parking lot in the middle of Hai-an road, in order to create a continuous phase of the space for different ethnic groups occupying Interpretation. Second, this project tear down some unusable houses in the street but keep their wooden facade. By using the old facade to create a new community centre at the middle of the Hai-an road where it is too wide for people to cross comfortably. And the place where it has been torn down becomes small-scale public spaces for local people. It also provides a chance for tourists to learn about the true local life.

From Parking Lot to Community Center The small-scale public space in the street provides many different uses. The place is mainly created for the local people. They can take it as the expansion of their houses, using it as living room, dining room, or even bathroom. The building in the middle of the road connect the two sides of the road where provide space for different group to use at different time. All groups of people can meet with each other, leading to more opportunities to communicate.

The Specimen of Epoch

The Specimen of the Epoch is my graduation project in 2014. This project targets the reconstruction of Taiwan’s historical legacies. Mere preservation will lead to the social detachment of these valuable properties, and I hope to seek out a way for these important heritages to return to their rightful roles in a city. I use the veteran villages as my samples to analyze the original, untainted space in the locale, and build a public corridor based on these models, balancing the separation and the exchanges between local residents and tourists.

Beitou faces the tourism industry’s approach. What attitude should we face the imminent loss of the old village scenery? I try to present my views to save the collective memory. We should no longer turn the old buildings to soulless dead specimens, but to design it as a living specimen of the soul.

Beitou River, which cuts through the down town of Bettou city, is the origin of the tourist resorts. With the hot spring, the Japanese started to construct this place during WWII. After the original Chinese government moved to Taiwan, thousands of solider settled down here. Recently, more and more touristorientated facilities were built and changed the whole landscape of Beitou. By this research I found a "Time gap" between two sides of the river. And choose where the river faced the hugest gap as my site.

The Time-Changing Point & The Fast-changing City View

Approach From the Tourst-orinated Commercial Area

The most important is that the visual connection betwaan the main road and old village between the gaps of high rises.

The change can be perceived more obviously at the metropolis than the rural area of Taiwan. The conventional building case of Taiwan is smaller than that of other countries. According to this, we can see the buildings built in different time intertwine, making the view of the city more diverse and showing the pattern of technological progress. Of course, the renewing of the entirely urban area is a method that can solve this problem. However, the old activity and memory are part of the citizens' lives. It is a question of preservation. The old military community is surrounded by the tourist-orientated skyscrapers. To the old people here, the small aisle between the skyscrapers becomes their main road to home. And to the young people here, it is the only way they can seize the nostalgic feelings.

So that, the gaps between high-rises are the place where I would like to show the citizen the history of the city.


A Wall of Memory, New Infrastructure


Spaces Sample From Village The river becomes a museum where the history of the city can be seen. Because of the disorder of the construction, the events of time can be misconstrued to be chaotic. I would like to create a new order of time, helping people understand the importance of some events. Beside the activities, the special spaces of the Military community are the soul of the city. This kind of the space provides the chance for the old activity to occur. I study the size, material, and user of the space. I try to rebuild these ambiguous, mix-used spaces on the covered river. I used figure ground to record the public space of the old village and transform the plan to a three-floor-height wall, which is the typical height of the old Beitou, starting to think of the space from these sections and trying to make a series of small spaces.

The activity of the open space is complicated, just like hat of the original community. The activities inside the open space are complex and hard to define. This side is facing the old military community that is going o have an urban renew plan. The material of the wall is punching stainless steel. During raining days the acade will be like a mirror, reflecting the new buildings.

The time to start construction is the same as that for the old village’s renew. Copying the old urban context which is going to disappear. Also, giving the guideline for the future public space. Facing the site where constructed in a very different time, a wall can be a separation and connection at the same time, turning the boundary between “new” and “old” to a reminiscent community centre and a living museum surrounded by the new buildings. In fact, the true military community has been destroyed. A series of specimens which represents the old public activities and spaces is shown.


Guardian of the Coast 04

This project is a competition project which aims to against tsunami. Upon researching, we found that waves do not move in a linear path and instead move in a circular one. To break the waves we must design a nonlinear boulder, as it has been proven that curved walls were better at keeping the waves away and decreasing their impact. We then took into consideration the urban layout, to design a tsunami defense system that will decrease the damages done by this natural disaster. This defense system would be of three stages. The first being located within the water, these would be buoys. These buoys will first break the waves and decrease their force, they will then also help in saving people who might be washed off the shore and into the sea. These buoys will be the last chance for such people to grab onto it until someone comes to their rescue. The second line of defense would be the designed border at the seashore. These will act as wave breakers, they will include areas for store and areas for people to walk around in, with an elevated boardwalk going across it. The last line of defense would be one within the city, this would be yet another wave breaker.

As illustrated above, these structures will be placed under a city road. There will be pedestrian access on the level of the structures. These structures will act as a wave breaker once a tsunami hits, decreasing the impact of the tsunami on the city. The structure would have received signals from the first and second lines of defense, immediately alerting the people of the city that disaster is about to strike. The structures will also be retail spaces, for shops and may also carry out other functions.

Type 1 This structure is also mainly a sightseeing shelter and a space for shade on a hot summer day. Facing the sea is a light weaving fabric, this is to let light in and to be able to see the view of the sea. This structure is accessible from sea level.

This structure is the shelter structure for when the tsunami strikes. The entrance is a submarine-like round door, to seal out all water. It stands higher than the other structures, for safety, and for people to be able to recognize the shelter spaces out of all the other structures when the tsunami strikes. The Top of the shelter has a solar panel system to generate electricity for the alarm system, and the shelter on the inside. This also has a dock for boats to be tied onto when the tides are still high.

This structure acts as a buoy. It has a dome top shell of solar panels located on the very top. The solar panels generate electricity for two purposes, one is for the alarm system, and the other is for electrical boat charging plugs. These plugs, and the docks will help the rescue team recharge their boats as they are out mid sea looking for survivors. This is not only a line of defense, but also the last resort for people being washed off shore and into the sea. The people will grab onto the buoys and wait for the rescue team to arrive, as a light signals that this buoy has someone on it to help the team locate people faster.

The Social Housing Project is the proposal I made while representing my firm at the social housing exhibition held by the Taichung City Government. While other firms’ proposals focused on spatial structures, this proposal emphasized on the establishment of mechanisms, and on how to realize social housing under the status quo of the Taiwanese society. Through the mutual aids among different social groups, a new type of residence will develop with the autonomy of the residents as the ultimate goal, transforming the minority from the recipients to the provider of social resources.

Water is the most important source of our lives. Though many living activities need water, we hardly see the transportation of water, especially in modern days when the water seems to be inexhaustible. This project make the water facility more visible to the public. The water flow of water can be seen inside the building. After the using of water, the dirty water will be collected, being used to cultivate green spaces around the building. A wall of infrastructure surrounding the old building. The clean water supply from the outer part of the housing. The spaces that need to use water are arranged close to the exterior of the building. All the water-related activities can be seen from the outside.

A-mart mix-used building A-mart mix-used market is a commercial project located at the entrance of Shuinan Economic and Trade Park. The program included a mall, a food core, a gym, an office and parking lot, which is quite complicated. Because of the important location, this project work as a transition point from the old village to the new trade park. I set back the building from the east main road and create a public square for green spaces which is more friendly to the old village.

The west side of the building faces the developing trade park and serves as a vice entrence of the mall. Not only offer a small square with green space at the corner of the site, this facade also offers many vertical greens at different hight.

Treasure Garden 07

Treasure garden is an high-rise residential project which U-tech group collaborate with Italian architect Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. The most special part of the building is the dimand shape curtain wall which create a visual arc on the facade. By doing so, the residential units can enjoy the largest area of daylight and city view.
