Rethinking Revenue Management Post-Pandemic in the Travel and Transportation Industries Personal travel has rebounded and in certain markets surpassed prePandemic levels. In the past couple of years, organizations had to rethink travel and transportation strategies, particularly in the area of revenue management. To provide further insight into revenue management in the hospitality, travel and logistics sectors, Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) will host the Spring 2022 Industry Technical Workshop— Rethinking Revenue Management Post-Pandemic in the Travel and Transportation Industries.

FR ANK BUSH Senior Partner, Industry Consultant Teradata Frank Bush has over 20 years of experience in the airline, travel, travel distribution, transportation and technology industries. Prior to joining Teradata as an industry consultant in transportation, Frank worked in a variety of leadership roles for a global airline, including Revenue Management, Pricing Strategy, Marketing Planning, Corporate Finance, Operations Planning, Corporate Strategic Planning and Data Services. He is a frequent speaker at a variety of transportation industry events and is a strategic advisor to transportation leaders on the creation of an airline PNR Warehouse, Airline Merchandising, the Customer Journey, and linking corporate level strategy to analytics and the data environment.

L AURIE GARROW Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Georgia Institute of Technology Professor Laurie Garrow’s is Co-Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Air Mobility (CURAM) at Georgia Tech. She is an expert in aviation, travel behavior, data analytics, and discrete choice modeling.

Her work on urban air mobility and aviation has been featured by NPR, USA Today, the LA Times, Avionics International, and other media outlets. Dr. Garrow earned her Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at Northwestern University, with an emphasis on travel demand modeling and airline passenger behavior. Her dissertation won first prize in the 2004 Aviation Applications Section of INFORMS and honorable mention in the 2004 Eric Pas dissertation competition sponsored by IATBR. She is a 2013 recipient of the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize and the 2009 recipient of the Council of University Transportation Centers-American Road & Transportation Builders Association (CUTCARTBA) New Faculty Member Award. Her teaching contributions have been recognized via the institute-level award given by the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning, namely the CETL-BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. She is also the recipient of a CAREER award. She has previously served as President of AGIFORS, Vice President of Sections and Societies of INFORMS, President of the

Transportation Science and Logistics Society of INFORMS, and Chair of the Aviation Applications Section of INFORMS. In fall of 2020, Dr. Garrow was elected for a second term as President of AGIFORS. Dr. Garrow has five years of industry experience, including four years as an analyst in the Research and Development Revenue Management Group of United Airlines and one year as an analyst in the Customer Science Unit of Mercer Management Consulting.

BRET JOHNSON Director, CCITT Senior Associate Director, Transportation Center Northwestern University Bret Johnson is the Associate Director of the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC), and the Director of the Center for the Commercialization of Innovative Transportation Technology at Northwestern. Bret manages corporate relations and engagement for NUTC, and develops strategic research collaborations and executive education programs with and for industry and public sector partners. In this role, he also helps nurture, grow, and develop programming for the Transportation Center’s Business Advisory Council.

Prior to joining Northwestern, Bret held senior engineering and project management positions at 3COM, Grayhill, Northrop-Grumman, and GE Astrospace. He received an M.A. in Science, Technology and Public Policy from The George Washington University, an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

MICHAEL KLEIN Vice President Global Revenue Management Hyatt Corporation Michael is an accomplished hospitality revenue strategy & analytics professional with over fifteen years of experience at major chains, including his current role as Global Vice President of Revenue Management at Hyatt Hotels Corporation. He oversees global revenue strategy, advanced analytics & revenue management systems.

Previously, Michael held revenue optimization & analytics roles with MGM Resorts International, Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Hilton Hotels &

Resorts & Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. Michael also worked as a strategy consultant for Duetto, makers of cloud-based hotel revenue management software and revenue strategy solutions. Michael holds a BA in Hotel Administration from the University of Nevada – Las Vegas.

HANI S. MAHMASSANI William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation Director, Transportation Center Northwestern University Hani S. Mahmassani is Director of the Transportation Center, and the William A. Patterson Distinguished Professor in Transportation at Northwestern University, which he joined on September 1, 2007, with joint appointments in the McCormick School of Engineering and the Kellogg School of Management. He previously served in endowed faculty positions at the University of Maryland and at the University of Texas at Austin. Mahmassani has over 35 years of experience as a researcher, scholar and professional in the transportation and logistics area.

Mahmassani is recognized nationally and internationally for a broad array of transportation research achievements; his applications span both passenger and freight, and he has been especially effective at connecting advanced models to emerging policy issues. He has pioneered the use of novel data sources and real-time data streams in transportation modeling and decision-making, including sensor data from intelligent transportation systems deployments, probe data from GPS and smartphones, transaction records from payment systems, and vehicle-based tracking systems. His current research is focused on autonomous vehicle deployment, including fleet operations for emerging mobility service models.

ERIC RUHLIN Managing Director of Revenue Decision Support United Airlines Eric Ruhlin is United Airlines’ Managing Director of Revenue Decision Support, where he is responsible for research and development of United’s Pricing and Revenue Management systems, Revenue Integrity, Business Intelligence, and Partner Inventory solutions. While in this role, Eric oversaw the development of United’s new Revenue Management system, Gemini, which transformed the way United forecasts passenger demand using passenger segmentation and elasticity curves.

Previously, Eric led United’s Domestic Pricing & Revenue Management team. Eric has been with the company since 1999, when he joined Continental Airlines as an intern prior to its merger with United. Before he discovered his passion for making airline pricing more efficient, Eric was a Control Systems Engineer in the petrochemical industry. Eric has an MBA and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in Houston. He is married and has one daughter.

SERGEY SHEBALOV Vice President and Head of Research Sabre Corporation Sergey Shebalov graduated with Ph.D. in mathematics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2004. After graduation he worked at United Airlines as an Operations Research Analyst. In 2007 Sergey joined Sabre where he now holds a position of Vice President and Head of Research. In the current role Sergey leads a team of 50 professionals working on research and development of analytics and decision support systems for travel industry. The team is responsible for design and development of Sabre Travel AITM – an innovative technology that brings AI/ML capabilities to the travel industry. Sergey’s area of expertise includes application of operations research and machine learning methods to retailing, distribution, fulfilment, and operations processes.

ZEKE ZILIAK Transportation & Logistics Digitization Evangelist Zeke Ziliak has twenty-five years of experience in strategic pricing and revenue management, with a focus in transportation industries. While at PROS, Zeke’s team developed and deployed the air cargo industry’s first dynamic programming optimization solution for contribution management, and later, the first price optimization solution for negotiation of deals. Zeke’s commercial solutions have been deployed in air cargo, intermodal freight, LTL & FTL trucking, class I railroads, 3PLs, and final mile parcel delivery service providers.
