Islands Hospital proudly hosted the second Annual Best Practice Spotlight Organizations (BPSO) Conference on Friday, May 31st, 2024, at Beaches Turks and Caicos Under the engaging theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care,” the conference successfully united healthcare professionals for a day of insightful discussions, collaborative learning, and opportunities for continued education
The hybrid format of the conference allowed for both in-person and virtual attendance, enabling a diverse group of participants to engage in meaningful conversations about the critical role of nursing in shaping the future of healthcare. Attendees also had the chance to earn Continuing Medical Education (CME) Certification with 4 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Points

The Department of Special Needs Services, in collaboration with InterHealth Canada – Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital, recently held its annual sports day at The Special Needs Association of Providenciales (SNAP) Center Various engaging sports activities were organized to nurture various skills, encompassing fine and gross motor skills, cognitive tasks, and self-help exercises such as catching the bus and dressing for school Students actively participated in stimulating hand-eye coordination.
Commenting on the annual sports day, Hon. Rachel Taylor, Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Library Services shared her sentiments saying, "Congratulations on yet another successful event that not only fosters inclusivity but also paves the way for growth and empowerment. This annual event serves as an action of hope and demonstrates the unwavering commitment to nurturing the potential of all individuals, irrespective of their abilities. Next year we anticipate the incorporation of our Neurodiverse students from all schools around the islands as we continue to focus on inclusion.”

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE MIDWIFE WITH THE THEME "MIDWIVES: A VITAL CLIMATE SOLUTION.
On Friday, May 3rd, 2024, InterHealth Canada - Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital observed the International Day of the Midwife with the theme "Midwives: A Vital Climate Solution."
The event featured presentations on various topics, including Danger Signs in Pregnancy, Hurricane Preparedness by the TCI Red Cross, Importance of Nutrition in Pregnancy and Lactation by Mrs. Lakiesha Gardiner-Wilson, Violence Against Women, and Family Planning.
Chief of Medical Services Dr Dawn PerryEwing and Dr Stephen Anara, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, delivered special remarks.
Chief of Clinical Services Mikette Been emphasized the critical role of midwives in providing swift care to those affected by climate-related disasters. She explained "Midwives serve as essential conduits fo reproductive and maternal health services information dissemination, and supply distribution, ensuring accessible and responsive community services Advocating for investment, resources autonomy, and inclusion in decision making, midwives call for integrating midwife care in health system planning fo climate resilience The celebration calls fo all midwives to unite and advocate for a healthier planet and communities."
The soon-to-be parents in attendance received goodie bags and participation certificates, recognizing and appreciating the significance of midwifery in promoting the well-being of mothers and babies.

TCI Hospital Team Participates in Cholera Simulation Exercise Organized by the Ministry of Health and Human Services
THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES (MOHHS) AND STAKEHOLDERS
The Ministry of Health and Human Services (MOHHS) has been proactive in ensuring the health safety of the Turks and Caicos Islands by developing a Cholera Contingency Plan back in 2011, which was recently updated in November 2023 In light of a cholera case identified in the TCI in 2023, a team from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) visited the islands to conduct an on-the-ground assessment and provide essential technical support to the MOHHS.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the revised contingency plan, the MOHHS, in collaboration with the UKHSA and the UK Overseas Territories Health Security Programme, conducted a simulation exercise to mimic a cholera outbreak
This critical exercise took place from June 11th to 12th, 2024, bringing together delegates from twelve organizational stakeholders and agencies, including a dedicated team from the Turks and Caicos Islands Hospital, comprised of eight members from the Emergency Department, alongside representatives from the Facilities Management company The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) also participated over the two days, further strengthening regional partnerships and enhancing collaborative efforts.
The simulated outbreak and the ensuing evaluation of the response prompted engaging discussions and a collaborative approach to finalize a comprehensive cholera response plan for the TCI The exercise received funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Integrated Security Fund Governance Programme, through the UKOTs Health Security Programme, underscoring the commitment to health security in the region.

The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Hospital recently expressed its commitment to community development and support by participating in the annual graduation ceremony of the SNAP Centre, held at St. Monica’s Anglican Church. The event showcased students' achievements from the Special Needs Services program, and two representatives from the hospital were honoured to attend: Pediatrician Dr Sonia Mera and Public Relations and Marketing Manager Takara Bain.
The SNAP Centre is dedicated to providing comprehensive educational and therapeutic services for children with special needs, fostering an inclusive environment where every child can thrive. This annual graduation ceremony celebrates the students' accomplishments and raises awareness about the importance of supporting individuals with diverse abilities.
As representatives of TCI Hospital, Dr. and Takara Bain took great prid standing alongside the dedicated parents, and supporters of the Centre.

In a heartwarming gesture of compassion and support, representatives from Gideon International recently visited the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) Hospital to donate Bibles intended for patients in the hospital's inpatient rooms. The Gideon International organization, known for its mission to spread hope and comfort through the distribution of Bibles, has a longstanding tradition of promoting spiritual wellbeing around the world Their initiative to provide Bibles to hospitals and healthcare facilities is rooted in the belief that scripture can be a source of strength and solace, particularly during difficult times. For many patients, the hospital experience can be overwhelming, marked by uncertainty and anxiety regarding their health The presence of a Bible can serve as a comforting reminder of faith, offering reassurance and hope amidst the trials they face.
