En planta el edificio está igualmente quebrado, cada zona configurada en volúmenes trapezoidales que se ajustan al pliegue del río. En la biblioteca, un volumen alargado ceñido al río, un corte profundo en el plano del techo a través del nivel de investigación lleva luz y aire al centro de la planta para las zonas de lectura y el mostrador de atención. La zona de exposiciones tiene un corte similar en la cubierta en perpendicular al anterior para conducir la luz diurna a través de un enorme lucernario emplazado en la terraza superior, ofreciendo vistas inesperadas a la exposición inferior.

Un espacio introvertido y reflexivo cuyas paredes se extienden hacia la ribera, adaptándose a la geometría del emplazamiento. Protegido por detrás del muro de hormigón del acceso, el espacio puede intuirse a través de la puerta cuando se llega, o alternativamente cerrarse para las exposiciones. El foyer del teatro es parecido a un volumen comprimido – vertical en esta ocasión – capturando entre el auditorio y la pasarela. Perforando el pesado muro de hormigón del teatro, la sala de control queda suspendida sobre el café. Las grandes puertas de cristal se deslizan hacia atrás para abrir el café y el foyer a la pasarela, y desde el foyer superior el público se extiende hacia la terraza superior observando la ciudad. Internamente el escenario está equipado de manera completa con peines y foso de orquesta, y la sala dispone de un sistema flexible de butacas en la platea y la tribuna, que presenta al escenario un muro de expectantes caras. La acústica está diseñada para favorecer tanto el discurso como la música con un ajuste del arco del proscenio.

A lo largo del edificio el color se emplea para codificar y enfocar – rojo para información, naranja para circulaciones verticales, negro y blanco para concentrarse y relajarse. Visto desde el otro lado del río esta zonas de color se presentan como grandes gestos de conexión en el caso de los conductos naranjas de las escaleras, elevándose diagonalmente por detrás del vidrio intensos focos de rojo remarcando las zonas de información, zonas blancas de investigación e introspección, y puntos negros que marcan los usos nocturnos. Externamente la pasarela flota sobre el río por encima del aparcamiento subterráneo, cerrado por una mampara de listones de cedro.

Un nuevo espacio cívico por detrás del edificio se abre hacia el río y puede usarse para rastrillos, ferias y mercados.

Planta de Situación. Location Plan

In plan the building is similarly cranked, each zone mapped into trapezoidal volumes which master the bend of the river. In the library, a long thin space with its volume pressed to the river, a deep cut in the ceiling plane right through the research floor brings light and air to the centre of the plan at reading spaces and the issue desk. The exhibition space has a similar slice through the roof plane orthogonal to the first to conduct daylight through a huge rooflight sitting across the upper terrace, giving unexpected views of the work on exhibition below.

An introverted, reflective space, its walls splay out towards the riverfront, taking up the geometry of the site. Shielded behind the monolithic concrete entrance wall, the space can be glimpsed through a porthole when arriving, or alternatively closed off for hanging. The theatre foyer is similarly a compressed volume – vertical this time – caught between auditorium and boardwalk. Piercing the heavy concrete wall of the theatre, the control room is suspended over the café/bar. Large glass doors slide back to open the café and foyer to the boardwalk, and from the upper foyer the audience expands out on to the upper terrace overlooking the town. Internally the theatre stage is equipped with full flying and rigging as well as an orchestra pit, totally flexible raked seating and a balcony, which presents to the stage a wall of expectant faces. Acoustics are designed to favour both spoken word and music performance by an adjustment of the proscenium arch.

Throughout the building colour is used to code and focus– red for information, orange for vertical circulation, white and black for concentration and relaxation.

Seen from across the river these coloured zones resolve themselves into large scale gestures of connection in the case of tubes of orange stairs rising diagonally behind glass, intense dots of red marking out information areas, calm white zones of research and introspection, spots of black indicating more expansive night uses. Externally the boardwalk floats towards the river over a sunken car park, closed off with a slatted cedar screen. A new civic space beyond the building opening to the river can be used for garage sales, craft fairs and farmers markets.
