INTRODUCCIÓN

El primer ejercicio de la asignatura de Proyectos 2 en el Grado en estudios de Arquitectura de la EINA, Universidad de Zaragoza, en el curso académico 2013-2014 continúa con el desarrollo de las pautas de aprendizaje proyectual de la asignatura precedente. Desbrozadas unas bases metodológicas y formales, el paso siguiente incide de forma intensa en la condición evocadora del proyecto, en su idea y su justificación desde el concepto, a partir del conocimiento intenso y denotativo del personaje-cliente. A partir de ahí, valorándose por tanto el proceso, la intuición, el azar o la búsqueda, por encima de los propios resultados, el ejercicio es también y esencialmente arquitectura: respuesta concreta a los condicionantes del programa (autoimpuestos), del lugar, el contexto y de la cultura.

La ejercicio parte y es la continuidad de la historia que presenta la película La Casa de Emak Bakia del director de cine Oskar Alegria (emakbakiafilms.com), articulada en torno a la búsqueda de la casa que da nombre a la película homónima del artista surrealista Man Ray de 1926.

El proyecto nace a partir del visionado de la película de Oskar Alegria; el proyecto es, de alguna manera, esa película, hasta el punto que el proyecto arquitectónico que se debe realizar es una nueva Emak Bakia para el propio director, Oskar Alegria. Conocemos al cliente a través de la película y, mediante la película, intuimos e interpretamos lo que el director podría llegar a querer.

Continuando de alguna manera con la búsqueda del director, entendemos que sus procesos, pasiones, decisiones, querencias, respetos y sensibilidades se deben hacer programa doméstico, habitación, casa y hogar.

El ejercicio consiste, por tanto, en proyectar una nueva casa Emak Bakia para Oskar Alegria sobre la misma parcela de la casa original. El programa doméstico de la casa (número, tipo y tamaño de las estancias que la componen) es precisamente la parte dinamizadora del proyecto ya que su concreción es la primera decisión que debe tomar el alumno a partir del visionado de la película y la intromisión especulativa en lo que serían las necesidades y voluntades del director en relación a su casa soñada que ahora se re-materializa. El programa es tan libre como restrictivo, marcado por la correcta interpretación de lo que el cliente desearía. No hay limitaciones en cuanto a superficie, ocupación de la parcela, número de plantas, etc.

Concretado el programa de necesidades, el proyecto se sumerge en las herramientas disciplinares de la arquitectura para satisfacer así la profunda y delicada sensibilidad y creatividad del director. El proyecto deberá resolver, por tanto, la adecuación del programa doméstico y su articulación funcional en relación a la escala, el lugar, el contexto, el lenguaje, la materia y la forma. El calado significante y evocador del proyecto entendido como búsqueda es directamente proporcional al rigor de la plasmación arquitectónica de su resultado.

INTRODUCCIÓN

The first exercise of the second year Arch Studio course (Sophomore) at the Degree in Architecture Studies at the EINA, University of Zaragoza, in the academic course 2013-2014 continues with the strategies of the year course. After a series of formal methodologies have been explored the next step aims to enhance the evocative approach in architectural design as well as issues like the concept and the arguments that go within it. Such a stage is explored through an intense study of the given character-client. From there on, the process, the intuition, the chance and the search were especifically considered beyond any final results. The exercise is essentially about architecture: A specific answer to the conditions of the program (self-imposed), the place, the context and its culture.

The exercise poses a continuity with the history that is introduced by the documentary La Casa de Emak Bakia (The Emak Bakia House) by film Director Oskar Alegria (emakbakiafilms.com). The argument of the documentary is articulated around the search for a house that lends its name to the homonymous film by Surrealist artist Man Ray of 1926. The architecture project is born out of the watching of the documentary; the project is the documentary itself in a certain way to the extent that the program conceives a new Emak Bakia house for the film director himself, Oskar Alegria. We know the client through the film and we interpret what the director could actually want for his own house. As a sort of continuation of the search of the director we are able to understand that his processes, passions, decisions, longings, respects and sensibilities must be transformed into a domestic program: room, house and home.

The project consists of the design on a new Emak Bakia house for Oskar Alegria located on the very same place where the original house was found. The domestic program (number, type and size of the different rooms) is what actually brings dynamism into the process as its conception is the very first decision that the student is required to take after the watching of the documentary and the speculative irruption in the needs and desires of the director for his supposedly future house.

The program is therefore as free as it is restrictive, configured only by the accurate interpretation of what the client would want. There are no limitations in terms of built area, land occupation, number of floors, etc.

After the architectural program was defined the design was developed through the disciplinary procedures so as to satify the deep and delicate sensibility of the director. The project aimed to solve the domestic aproach and its functional articulation in terms of scale, place, context, language, matter and form. The evocative depth of the design seen as a search can be considered as directly proportional to the rigor with which it is translated into a final result.

Bachelard, don Gaston, decía aquello tan bello de: «Las imágenes primeras, aquellas que nos acompañan toda la vida hasta el final, son una casa, un camino y un árbol». Imágenes primeras, pensemos en eso. No son segundas, no son imágenes terceras, son las imágenes primeras, un buen título para un libro de memorias, cuando ya el sol esté de caída total, habrá que escribir ese tomo que lleve por título: «Las imágenes primeras».

En mi infancia están ahí, bajo un azul de verano feliz, estíos de cuando éramos inmortales y vivíamos sin nubes, en pantalón corto, en un pueblo de ensueño de 60 casas en la montaña del centro de Navarra. La casa, la de mi padre y la de mi madre, situadas en el mismo pueblo, separadas por tan solo 57 pasos. El árbol, el almendro de Malakate desde el que todo era seguridad. El camino, hacia la ermita perdida en el bosque en Orendain, lleno de ranas, huellas de jabalíes, nidos y setas.

En la película Emak Bakia Baita he vuelto a acumular más imágenes primeras; otra casa, otro camino, otro árbol. Reconozco mi incapacidad: no sé contar ninguna historia sin que haya esos tres elementos: un árbol, un camino, una casa. Quizás Ulises se perdió el elemento árbol al cabalgar por el mar. Marco Polo se trajo un bosque y mil caminos pero olvidó lo fundamental: una casa.

Un día me enteré de que Man Ray había estado por mi tierra en una casa llamada Emak Bakia, que

Bachelard, Monsier Gaston, used to say something as beautiful as: “The first images, those that accompany us along our lives until the end, are those of a house, a path, and a tree”. The first images, let us think about that. They are not the second images, they are not the third images, they are the first images. A good title for a memoir book, when the sun is already low, we will have to write such a volume, one that has the title: “The First Images”.

They are in my childhood under the blue of a happy summertime when we were immortal and used to live without clouds, wearing shorts in a dreamlike village of 60 houses in the mountains at the very center of Navarre. The house, my father’s and my mother’s, located in the same village, within 57 steps one from the other. The tree, the Malakate almond tree from which everything was safe. The path to the shrine lost in the middle of the forest of Orendain, filled with frogs, wild boar footprints, nests and mushrooms.

In the documentary Emak Bakia Baita I have gathered more first images again; another house, another path, another tree. I must admit my inability: I do not know how to tell a story without including these three elements: A tree, a path, a house. Maybe Ulysses missed the element tree due to his riding on the sea. Marco Polo brought a forest and a thousand paths but missed the

en euskera quiere decir «déjame en paz», y me dije: «Es hora de buscar esa casa; junto a ella seguro que encuentro la sombra de un buen árbol y un largo camino».

Lo más mágico de todo es que en esta aventura hacia Emak Bakia las imágenes primeras han jugado a disfrazarse y cambiar sus papeles entre ellas, como una danza de disfraces.

El árbol ha resultado ser el camino, en Aire Leku, perdido por las laderas de Ibardin, un viejo roble que vive separado del bosque y silba con el viento cuando atraviesa sus nudos y agujeros, como una flauta con raíces en la noche de los tiempos. Un árbol-camino que guarda a Man Ray en su corteza y que como todos los artistas sin –ismos ni movimientos, los inclasificables e inasibles, se mantiene erguido en solitario separado de sus compañeros como una invitación a ese camino desvío, una llamada a tomar las rutas que nos llevarán más lejos, como el dicho del poeta: nunca se va tan lejos como cuando no se sabe adónde se va.

Y siguiendo con la segunda imagen primera, la que hace en sí referencia al camino, en esta aventura el camino ha sido sin duda la casa. Un camino donde quedarse a habitar sin recorrerlo, sin dejarlo atrás, permaneciendo siempre en él y en su caja de sorpresas. Un camino voluntariamente interminable como una mansión para entrar a vivir. La meta es el camino decía la sabiduría, y así

fundamental element: a house. One day I knew that Man Ray had been living in my country in a house called Emak Bakia, which in Basque means “leave me alone”, and I said to myself: “This is about time to search for that house; I am sure I will find the shadow of a good tree and a long path next to it”.

The most magical thing is that in this adventure towards Emak Bakia the first images have put on a costume and have exchanged their roles, like a costume ball. The tree happened to be the path, in Aire Leku, lost amidst the hills of Ibardin, an old oak that lives away from its forest and whistles when the wind goes through its knots and holes, like a flute rooted in the mists of time. A tree-path that keeps Man Ray within its bark and that like all artists with neither -isms nor movements, the unclassified and the unapprenhensible, keeps itself upright lonely away from its companions as if inviting to a detour, a call to take the routes that will take us farther, like the saying of the poet: one does never goes as far as when one does not know where is going.

And as a continuation with the second of the first images, the one that refers to the path, in this adventure the path has undoubtlessly been the house. A path that could be inhabited without necessarily walking it, without leaving it behind, always staying within it and within its surprise

es, partir es llegar, el camino al paraíso es ya el paraíso… y tantas más verdades para llegar a la última imagen primera: la CASA, con mayúsculas. En esta ocasión una casa llamada Emak Bakia, que también ha mudado su imagen para seguir el juego de sus otras imágenes primeras, y se ha convertido sin duda en el árbol, el gran árbol al que encaramarse como un barón rampante y desde él gritar al mundo «Emak Bakia!», «¡Déjadme en paz!», «Leave me alone!», «Fichez-moi la paix!».

box. A path that is voluntarily endless like a mansion that is ready for a living. The finish line is the only way, wisdom used to say, and that is about right, the path to paradise is paradise itself... and so many more truths until we get to the last first image: the HOUSE, in capital letters. This time, it is a house called Emak Bakia, which has also changed its appearance so as to follow the game of its other first images, and has been transformed into the tree, the large tree to which to climb like a baron in the trees and shout out to the world “Emak Bakia!”, “¡Déjadme en paz!”, “Leave me alone!”, “Fichez-moi la paix!”.

Resulta extraño pensar que el arte de vanguardia, dominante en París a principios del siglo XX, surgió del calor que los cubistas, dadaístas, surrealistas y demás pioneros se dieron mutuamente en los apretujados barrios de Montmartre o de Montparnasse, y que, de no haber habido tal, habría ocurrido –cito el poema de Richard de Fournival1– como con «el huevo de avestruz que nadie ha empollado»; se habría echado a perder, quedándose en nada. Piénsese en lo afirmado en una entrevista por Daniel Kahnweiler2, marchante y defensor de Picasso, en el sentido de que, tras la guerra de 1914, el grupo cubista quedó desmantelado y los artistas, viéndose solos, perdieron fuerza y recularon hacia postulados artísticos mucho más convencionales. Piénsese también que el movimiento nunca atravesó con fuerza el canal de la Mancha, y que, aún en 1938, cuando se celebró en Londres la exposición de apoyo a la España republicana organizada por lo más granado de la intelectualidad británica –E.M. Forster y Virginia Wolf figuraban en la lista de los patrocinadores–, Picasso era, en la reseña del catálogo, «one of the leaders of the modern movement in painting», sin más leyenda3. La frialdad, la reticencia incluso, del universo en lengua inglesa hacia la vanguardia artística no disminuyó con el tiempo: en F for Fake, película de 1973, Orson Welles ironizaba sobre el pintor de Málaga, «un genio, capaz de hacer una raya… y convertirla en oro»; antes, John Berger lo había retratado como un artista de capacidad prodigiosa que, a partir al menos de 1945, carecía de objetivo y de tema, y se había vuelto amanerado4; yendo más allá, Paul Johnson publicó en 1996 una colección de artículos a la que daba título el más beligerante de ellos, To Hell With Picasso, presentándole como «el estafador artístico de mayor éxito del siglo» 5. Piénsese, por fin,

It is strange to think that the Avant Garde, dominating Paris artistic scene in the first years of the 20th century, was started under the warmth that Cubists, Dada, Surrealists and other pioneers gave one another in the tight neighborhoods of Montmartre or Montparnasse, and that even if there had not been such, it would have happened –after the poem by Richard de Fournival1– “like the ostrich’s egg that none has brooded”; it would have spoiled, leaving nothing behind. Let us think this through an interview by Daniel Kahnweiler,2 Picasso’s agent and defender in the sense that after the Great War of 1914 the Cubist group was dismantled and its artists, once alone, lost force and recoiled towards more conventional artistic theories. Let us think as well that the movement never actually moved beyond the English Channel in a strong way, and that, even in 1938 when the Exhibit that took place in London in support of the Spanish Republic organized by the most relevant British intellectuals –E.M. Forster and Virginia Wolf were among the sponsors–.

As appeared in the catalogue, Picasso was “one of the leaders of the modern movement in painting”, without any further comment.3 The coldness, even the reluctance of the English-speaking universe towards the artistic Avant-Garde did not diminish: in F for Fake, a film of 1973, Orson Welles was quite ironic on the painter from Málaga, “a genius, capable of making a line… and transform it into gold”; Before that, John Berger had defined him as an artist of a prodigious capacity who, at least from 1945, had no targets and no topics, and had evolved into an affected style.4 Even more, Paul Johnson published in 1996 a collection of articles titled after the most belligerent of them, To Hell With Picasso, introducing him as “most successful artistic cheater of the century”.5 Let us think 15

que cuando se cita el nombre de Man Ray –lo he comprobado repetidamente– en una reunión de escritores en Nueva York o Edimburgo, la mayoría se lo tiene que pensar dos veces para recordar que, efectivamente, hubo un fotógrafo y pintor de ese nombre.

Vuelvo al principio: resulta extraño pensar que no fue la sociedad en general ni la crítica dominante la que llevó a cabo la censura con el arte tradicional, sino la legión de artistas apretujados en Montparnasse y Montmartre. La crítica dominante –lo dice el mismo Daniel Kahnweiler– recibió de uñas Las señoritas de Avignon; de entre los dadaístas y los surrealistas, solo Paul Eluard solía merecer los elogios de la cultura oficial, estando los demás marginados a las revistas que ellos mismos creaban y financiaban. En cuanto a la sociedad en general, no solo era ajena a las obras de vanguardia una mayoría menestral o de clase media, sino, asimismo, la elite. Basta leer las memorias de Man Ray6 para percibir el sentido de esa indiferencia. Cuando se estrenó Emak Bakia en París, el público lo recibió con risotadas, y la carcajada general fue aún más sonora cuando el propio autor explicó que el título de su película significaba «¡Déjame en paz!» en lengua vasca. Es decir: acudían a ver la película, algunos incluso la financiaban; se mostraban, además, dispuestos a divertirse con la extravagancia o la provocación, pero no estaban en el mismo universo que los artistas.

«Así le sucede al huevo del Avestruz. Porque este pájaro es de tal naturaleza que deja su huevo en la arena y ya no vuelve a prestarle atención. Pero el sol, que es fuente universal de calor, le calienta y le alimenta en la arena. Así llega a la vida, sin que precise ser empollado de otra manera»… Son los versos de Richard de Fournival. Doy un salto, hago un quiebro metafórico, y me pregunto: ¿Y el arte

that when the name of Man Ray is recalled –I have repeatedly proved it myself– in a meeting of writers in New York or Edinburgh, the majority of them needs to think twice to recall that in fact there was once a photographer and painter under that name.

Going back to the beginning: it is strange to think that it was neither the general society nor the dominant critique what censored the traditional art, but the legion of artists living tightly in Montparnasse and Montmartre. The predominant critique –as said by Daniel Kahnweiler himself– was very critical with Les Mademoiselles D’Avignon; from among the Dadaists and the Surrealists, only Paul Éluard used to receive the praise of the official culture, keeping the others marginalized in the magazines they were creating. As for the general society, not only the majority or the middle class was ignorant of the Avant-Garde works but the elite itself. To read Man Ray’s memoirs is enough as to perceive such indifference. When Emak Bakia6 was first shown in Paris, the public watched amused, laughing, and the general laughter became louder when the author himself announced that the title meant “Leave me alone!” in Basque. That is: the public watched the film, some even funded it; they even were ready to enjoy the extravagance but they were not in the same universe as the artists were.

“That happens to the ostrich egg. Because that bird has such a nature that it leaves its egg in the sand and never pays any more attention to it. But the sun, universal source of heat, keeps it warm and feeds it on the sand. Then it becomes alive, without the need to brood it in any different manner”. These are verses by Richard de Fournival. I take a leap, make a metaphor, and wonder: 16

de vanguardia? ¿La literatura de vanguardia? ¿Podían sobrevivir con el mero calor que mutuamente se daban los Picasso, Bretón, Eluard, Tzara, Picabia, Dalí, Artaud, Ray y demás?

Desde siempre, desde los primeros textos y las primeras pinturas, los creadores han necesitado de vínculos con lo que, en principio, era ajeno a su propio campo: con un Dios que le diera sentido a su trabajo, por ejemplo, o con una Utopía, con una Sociedad, o con la Cresería –la franja social donde habitan los iguales a Creso–. Gracias a esos vínculos, la obra artística accedía a dominios poderosos, los de la Religión, la Ciencia, la Política o la Economía, garantizándose una existencia social y la pervivencia en el tiempo.

Los movimientos vanguardistas no fueron una excepción. Piénsese en los primeros cubistas y la relación de su obra con los descubrimientos científicos en torno al átomo. La necesidad última de la obra artística provenía, en su caso, de la contribución al conocimiento de la verdadera realidad, aquella que se escondía tras las apariencias igual que el átomo tras la materia visible; como, por otra parte, se escondía el deseo sexual tras las imágenes de los sueños, o la mismísima verdad bajo la capa del lenguaje convencional o burgués que, naturalmente, como promulgaban los dadaístas, había que destruir.

Los surrealistas, con Bretón a la cabeza, eligieron tener un vínculo doble. Con la ciencia, por una parte, con las teorías psicoanalíticas, tratando de profundizar en las interioridades del ser humano con métodos que iban desde la exploración del «azar objetivo» hasta «la prospección del humor negro»; pero, además, con la política, interviniendo en la vida pública. Ya en 1925 los surrealistas

Since ever, from the very first texts and the very first paintings creators have required of links with something that was initially alien to their own field: with a God who would give a sense to their work, for example, or with a Utopia, with a Society, or with the Croesuses –the social group where those similar to Croesus inhabit–. Due to those bonds the work of art could have access to the domain of the powerful, the religion, the politics, the Economy, therefore guaranteeing a social existence and its duration in time.

The Avant-Garde movements were no exception. Let us think in the first Cubists and the relation between their work and the scientific findings around the atom. The final need for the work of art came from its contribution to the knowledge of the true reality, one that hid behind the appearance, like the atom behind the visible matter; like, on another level, the sexual appetite hid behind the images of the dreams, or the truth itself under a layer of conventional or bourgeoisie language, which had to be destroyed as the Dada artists promoted.

The Surrealists led by Bretón chose to have a double bond. With the Sciences and the Psychoanalytical theories on the one hand, in an attempt to explore humankind through methods that varied from the “objective chance” exploration to the “black comedy prospecting”; and with the Politics on the other hand, therefore intervening in public life. Already in 1925 the Surrealists had 17

habían respondido afirmativamente a la pregunta «¿Exige la emancipación del espíritu la previa emancipación social del hombre?», adhiriéndose al movimiento comunista.

Escribió Bretón en Légitime défense7: «En el terreno de los hechos no es posible ningún equívoco por nuestra parte: todos deseamos el traspaso del poder de manos de la burguesía a las del proletariado. Mientras, no es menos necesario a nuestro modo de ver, que sigan llevándose a cabo las experiencias de la vida interior, y ello, claro está, sin ningún control exterior ni siquiera marxista».

La contradicción que asomaba en aquel texto inicial tuvo muchas manifestaciones, con desencuentros constantes, y acabó estallando con ocasión del Primer Congreso Internacional de escritores para la defensa de la cultura que se celebró en París en 1935. André Bretón fue privado del uso de la palabra por haber abofeteado un par de días antes al escritor soviético Ilya Ehrenburg, quien, a su vez, había insultado muy gravemente a los surrealistas.

Al enfrentamiento le siguió un suceso trágico, el suicidio de René Crevel8, y la ruptura definitiva entre surrealistas y comunistas fue ya un hecho.

Fuera de París, el vínculo entre política y vanguardia artística cobró nueva vida puntualmente, en diferentes países y épocas. Así ocurrió por ejemplo en España en los años de la dictadura franquista cuando La muerte de un viajante de Arthur Miller o Huis Clos de Jean Paul Sartre eran indefectiblemente prohibidas «por orden gubernativa». Las obras vanguardistas –menos explícitas, más raras, de contenido invisible para el censor – se convirtieron, en esas circunstancias, en el único

Bretón wrote in Légitime Défense:7 “In the world of facts it is simply not possible that we misunderstand the question: we all want the shift of power from the hands of the bourgeoisie to the hands of the proletariat. Meanwhile, it is not necessary as we see it that the experiences of an interior life continue to happen and that, of course, without any external control, not even Marxist”.

The contradiction that was expressed in that first text had many manifestations with regular confrontations, and finally exploded at the First International Congress of Writers for the Defense of Culture celebrated in Paris in 1935. André Bretón was denied any option to speak due to his slapping Soviet writer Ilya Ehrenburg, who at the same time had severely insulted the Surrealists.

This confrontation was followed by a tragic success, the suicide of René Crevel,8 and the definite rupture between Surrealists and Communists.

Away from Paris, the link between politics and the artistic avante-garde recovered at once in different countries and times. That was the case of Spain during the years of the Dictatorship when Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller or Huis Clos by Jean Paul Sartre were inevitably prohibited “by Government order”. The avant-garde works –less explicit, more strange, whose content was invisible to censorship– were transformed under such circumstances into the only possible way of expression and the symbol of progressists values. In that sense, I recall the rapid popular 18

modo de expresión posible y en símbolo de valores progresistas. Recuerdo, en ese sentido, la rápida aceptación popular que en los años sesenta y setenta del pasado siglo tuvo el arte de vanguardia en el País Vasco. Quizás no se «entendieran» a fondo las esculturas de Oteiza o de Chillida, o los cuadros de Zumeta, Ruiz Balerdi o Ramos Uranga, pero se asociaban a cuestiones como la transformación social.

Las obras vanguardistas también eran una referencia para nosotros, los jóvenes creadores de la época. Recuerdo que José Julián Bakedano, miembro de nuestro grupo literario «La Banda Pott», realizó en 1972 un corto titulado Homenaje a Man Ray, y que mi primera novela corta, Ziutateaz, publicada en 1976, llevaba en la portada una fotografía realizada por Melchor Sarasqueta «en vacío», sin papel, siguiendo precisamente a Man Ray y aplicando una de sus técnicas. Años después, más viajados y conociendo de primera mano los Emak Bakia –la película y la escultura– decidimos llamar así a nuestro pequeño sello editorial.

La resurrección, la epifanía, duró lo que la dictadura. Con la llegada de la democracia, el arte y la literatura de vanguardia perdieron su valor simbólico y volvieron a su lugar de siempre, a la franja marginal de la cultura. Tampoco en España le bastaba al huevo de avestruz el calor del sol político.

«Peintres, soyez riches plutôt que pauvres. Et à cet fin, suivez mes conseils» («Pintores, sed ricos antes que pobres. Con ese fin, seguid mis consejos»), escribió Salvador Dalí en su diario el 13 de mayo de 1953,9 un pensamiento que ya debía ser notorio en él desde la época de París, cuando Bretón le rebautizó con el anagrama Avida Dollars. Simboliza como nadie al artista vinculado a la Cresería, suministrador de cuadros a los poderosos y entertainer de las fiestas que en la época daba el Sha de Persia, con Niarchos,

acceptance that the avante-garde art had in the Basque Country. Maybe the works by Oteiza or Chillida or the paintings by Zumeta, Ruiz Balerdi or Ramos Uranga were not understood, but they were associated with issues like the social transformation.

The avante-garde works were also a reference for us, the young creators of that time.

I remember that José Julián Bakedano, a member of our literary group “The Pott Band”, filmed a short documentary in 1972 with the title Homage to Man Ray, and that my very first short novel, Ziutateaz, published in 1976, had in the cover a photograph taken by Melchor Sarasqueta “within void”, without paper, following Man Ray and one of his techniques. Years later, after traveling and knowing the Emak Bakia first hand –both the film and the sculpture– we decided to name our small editorial group in the same way.

The resurrection, the epiphany, lasted until the end of the Dictatorship. With the arrival of the Democracy, art and avante-garde literature lost their symbolic values and returned to their usual place, to the marginal band of culture. The ostrich egg had not enough political warmth in Spain either.

“Peintres, soyez riches plutôt que pauvres. Et à cet fin, suivez mes conseils” (“Painters, be rich instead of poor. With such an end, follow my advices”), Salvador Dalí wrote in his diary on the 13th of May of 1953,9 a thought that was already notorious to him since he was in Paris, when Bretón re-christianed him with the anagram Avida Dollars. Dalí symbolizes like no one else the artist with links to the Croesuses, a painting provider to the rich and entertainer of the parties 19

Sería bueno analizar qué ha sido del arte de vanguardia con el sol de oro, qué es lo que de verdad ha salido de ese huevo de avestruz que Salvador Dalí pintó en su cuadro La Maddona de Port Lligat, o de los dos que le regaló a la hija de los Alboretto, los mayores coleccionistas de su obra 10; pero hay algo básico que, pensando ya en el Emak Bakia Baita de Oskar Alegria, conviene señalar: no todo lo que calienta a la pintura o la escultura, a las artes plásticas, calienta a la literatura o al cine. Salvo rarísimas excepciones, incunables y demás, no hay libro que pueda alcanzar el precio de mercado de cualquier cuadro menor de los antiguos habitantes de Montparnasse y Montmartre.

El valor que, en más de un sentido es caprichoso y puede encarnarse en cualquier cosa de cierta rareza y durabilidad, que se encarnó de hecho en la Holanda del siglo XVII en determinados bulbos de tulipán –el de la variedad «Almirante Liefken» costaba 4.400 florines11– no puede encarnarse en un poema cuya lectura está al alcance de cualquiera o en la película que pueden ver todos cuantos quieran. El consejo de Salvador Dalí –Peintres, soyez riches…– valía, efectivamente, para los pintores pero no para los poetas. Basta comparar la suerte económica de quienes se apretujaban en Montparnasse o en Montmartre. Los poetas no medraron, o medraron poco. El mismo André Bretón pasó serias dificultades económicas.

Oskar Alegria presentó su película Emak Bakia Baita, «Casa Emak Bakia» en 2012, y fue, en más de un sentido, un hecho excepcional. Mejor dicho, el remate a una serie de hechos excepcionales.

that were then organized by the Sha of Persia, with Niarchos, Agnelli, the Duke of Windsor, the Rothschilds and other golden presences; the same parties that were later joined by Andy Warhol and other Pop artists.

It would be good to analyze what exactly happened to the avante-garde art with the golden sun, what has actually followed after the ostrich egg that Dalí painted in his painting La Maddona de Port Lligat or in his two paintings that he gave the daughter of the Alboretto, the most relevant collectors of his oeuvre;10 but there is something basic that, while keeping in mind the Emak Bakia Baita by Oskar Alegria, should be underlined: not everything that warms up painting or sculpture, the plastic arts, warms up Literature or Film. With very rare exceptions, incunbulum and so on, there isn’t a book that could reach the market price of that of a minor painting of the old inhabitants of Montparnasse and Montmartre. The value that is in more than one sense capricious and that can be incarnated in any piece with some strangeness and durability, that was actually embodied in some tulip buds in the Netherlands in the 17th century –that of the “Admiral Liefken” species amounted to 4.400 florins11 – cannot be achieved in a poem whose lecture is at everybody’s reach or in a film that could be watched by anybody. The advice given by Salvador Dalí –Peintres, soyez riches…– was effectively useful for the painters but not for the poets. It is only necessary to compare the economic fate of those who lived tight in Montparnasse or Montmartre. The poets did not thrive, or they thrived just a little. André Bretón himself had serious economic difficulties.

Excepcional había sido el modo de realización, una ascensión en solitario, encargándose él mismo de todo («Guión, cámara, edición y producción: Oskar Alegria», dicen los títulos de crédito), viajando de un lado para otro sin más aparato que una máquina fotográfica que podía hacer de cámara. También eran excepcionales el momento –¡una película vanguardista en la era posmoderna!– y el desentendimiento de todas las fuentes de calor tradicionales: ninguna relación con el dinero, con el mercado; carga ideológica ligera, sin más detalle político que la simpatía hacia las diferentes lenguas y en concreto hacia el euskera; ningún eco de los fórums, seminarios o galerías donde se elabora la teoría de las vanguardias actuales. Tampoco vehemencia, ningún gesto «a la contra», tal como, por ejemplo, se ve en el Festival de Teatro de Edimburgo entre los diversos circuitos alternativos.

«Así digo de mí, que soy el huevo que nadie ha empollado y ha faltado muy poco para que me echase a perder. Pero una cierta alegría me sostiene y es como mi sol…», continúa diciendo el poema de Richard de Fournival, dando pie a un inocente juego lingüístico («pero un cierto Alegría me sostiene»). Con todo, no es esa asociación la que me lleva a subrayar algo interior a la obra y que también es excepcional: en la estela de Man Ray –no en la de Un perro andaluz de Buñuel y Dalí, ni en la de Arrebato, de Iván Zulueta– Emak Bakia Baita es una película luminosa, anti-espectacular, que discurre como ese viento suave que acompaña a muchas de sus imágenes, ligeramente. Es, en una palabra, una película cargada de alegría.

Oskar Alegria presented his film Emak Bakia Baita, “Emak Bakia House” in 2012 and it was an exceptional matter in more than one sense. Better yet, it was the culmination to a series of exceptional matters. Exceptional as the realization had been, a lonely ascend, to which he committed fully (“Script, camera, edition and production: Oskar Alegria”, the credit titles read), traveling from one side to another with just a photographic camera that could also be used as a film. Equally exceptional were the time –an avante-garde film in a postmodern time!– and the disengagement with all traditional heat sources: no relationship with money, with the market; light ideological approach, with just one political blink, that of the sympathy to the different languages and especially to the Basque; no echo of the forums, seminars or galleries where all the current avante-garde theories are elaborated. Not even vehemence, no moves “against”, as can actually be seen, for example, at the Theater Festival in Edinburgh among the different fringe circuits.

“That I say of myself, that I am an egg that none incubated and I was almost spoiled by just a bit. But I am supported by a certain happiness that is like my own sun…” the poem by Richard de Fournival continues, therefore giving way to an innocent linguistic play (“but I am supported by a certain Alegria” –happiness means alegría in Spanish–). But it is not such association what takes me to underline something that is inside the work and is also exceptional: it is Man Ray’s trail –neither that of Un perro andaluz by Buñuel and Dalí, nor that of Arrebato by Iván Zulueta– Emak Bakia Baita is a luminous film, anti-spectacular, that takes place like the smooth breeze that accompanies many of the images, lightly. In one word, it is a film loaded with alegría.

Declara Man Ray en el documental sobre su trabajo artístico que él solo tenía dos propósitos, perseguir la libertad y perseguir el placer12. En el mismo sentido su palabra clave, la única que aparece en su película, es «azar». El «azar objetivo» del que hablaban también los surrealistas y, en concreto, André Bretón.

El azar le lleva a Oskar Alegria hasta las puertas de la casa que desea encontrar, y le lleva también hasta unos personajes que él, con su calor, con su luminosidad, convierte en maravillosos.

En el camino, en determinados momentos de la película, surge de pronto la poesía. O mejor dicho: la poesía crucero de la película experimenta un pico, una elevación súbita. Miramos con amor a los cerdos que aparecen en la pantalla. Con más amor aún a ese payaso cuya fotografía hemos visto en una tumba. Se cumple, una vez más, lo que afirmó Witold Gombrowicz13, que no hay emoción poética sin sorpresa. Son momentos extraordinarios.

La palabra «azar» fue durante mucho tiempo una palabra con connotaciones negativas, incluso siniestras, pues tenía su origen en la flor –az zahr, en árabe – que solía figurar en una de las caras de los dados de juego. La flor acarreaba la eliminación del jugador que la sacaba, y de ahí que az-zahr pasara a designar lo fortuito que da lugar a desgracias y se convirtiera en símbolo de la malignidad del destino. Con los años y los siglos, los dados cambiaron de figuras y la flor desapareció. Perduró, sin embargo, la palabra. Bien instruido por Man Ray y otros artistas de vanguardia, Oskar Alegria la toma, la cambia de sentido, y hace con ella una obra que le empareja con sus maestros.

In the documentary on his artistic work Man Ray declares that he only follows two purposes, to pursue freedom and to pursue pleasure.12 In the same way his key word, the only one that shows up in his documentary, is “chance”. The “objective chance” that was also mentioned by the Surrealists and, most particularly, André Bretón.

Chance takes Oskar Alegria to the doors of the house he longs to find, and takes him also to some characters that he, through his warmth, his luminosity, transforms into something marvellous. Along the way in specific times of the film poetry suddenly shows up. Better yet: the cruise poetry of the film experiences a peak, a sudden elevation. With love we see the pigs that appear in the screen. With even more love we see that clown whose photograph we have seen in his tomb. Once again, what Witold Gombrowicz13 said becomes true, that there is no poetic emotion without surprise. These are extraordinary moments.

The term “chance” (azar in Spanish) had for a long time negative connotations, even sinister, as it had its origin in the flower –az zahr, in Arab– that used to be included in one of the faces of the playing dice. The flower meant the exclusion of the player who got it, and that is how the word az-zahr ended up designating the fortuitous and became a symbol for a malicious fate. Throughout the years and the centuries, the dice changed their faces and the flower disappeared. The word, however, survived. Well instructed by Man Ray and other Avante-Garde artists, Oskar Alegria takes it, changes its sense, and makes with it a work that parallels his masters.
