Hybrid Versus Face-to-Face Learning

by Shea Sutherland The fall 2020 semester has looked different than ever before. Students and faculty alike have created a close relationship with technology while adapting to hybrid learning, leaving fully face-to-face classes behind for the past four months.

“The transition went as smoothly as I could have hoped,” said Dr. Frank Johnson, executive vice president of academics and compliance. “That doesn’t mean it wasn’t without a considerable number of bumps.”

One specific bump has revolved around technology. Originally, not everyone had what they needed to successfully blend to online learning, so they are trying to address the concerns for the spring, Johnson said.

Specific details within the technological area have been both easy and hard to adjust to for professors and students. While experiences vary, the common easiest aspect has been the use of Canvas because of its user-friendliness and familiarity before switching to hybrid-base classes.

Johnson said the difficult aspects focus on two different perspectives. From the faculty perspective, the hardest task has been having to constantly reinvent themselves and their curriculum using Zoom. While from the student perspective, it has been challenging to learn more information on their own.

A survey conducted by Student Senate sought to understand students’ desires for their college learning experience, and feedback has presented personal perspectives of hybrid learning all across the spectrum. The most consistent feedback has emphasized the return to the normal, in-person only college setting. On the other hand, there have also been responses pointing in the opposite direction from some students.

The survey has been a “toss-up,” said Johnson. “It clearly leans toward returning face-to-face, but there are a number of students that think this is great.”

Students and faculty members are now wondering what classroom settings will look like for both Interterm and the spring semester as the fall ends.

“Classes will be offered in both hybrid and inperson,” said President Jules Glanzer in an email to students. “When space is available and the professor desires, we will work to accommodate whichever mode is requested.”

For those who may be in quarantine or isolation during Interterm or the spring, hybrid classes will be offered, said Glanzer. In addition, Student Success will continue to serve those who request help.

“I’m always open to students’ perspectives,” said Johnson. “I want to hear what they are thinking and how we can do a better job to serve them. That is what we are here for.”

Graduation Recap

As the world is learning to cope with ever changing plans, Tabor was fortunate enough to incorporate a graduation ceremony for 2020 graduates. Although, it has come five months later than its scheduled date.

“It was very important to our committee that the Tabor College graduates of 2020 felt honored and recognized,” said Kliewer, and 100 students were honored upon their return to campus.

Tabor graduates had already received their diplomas and begun a new chapter of life after more than a decade of school, but faculty and parents still wanted to celebrate with their accomplished students Oct. 11, homecoming weekend.

There was limited seating available at the ceremony, but Kliewer mentioned that they worked to provide a reliable livestream. This opened up the window for family members and others who were unable to physically attend to still join the celebration.

“I will always remember walking into the CRC gym where graduates were assembling. There was so much joy in there,” said Miriam Kliewer, a member of the planning team. “These graduates were embracing one another, greeting one another and even with masks on you could see their faces were just alight.”

Graduation did look different, but Kliewer said the committee’s method of conquering COVID-19 started with extra meetings to create a plan of action. By thinking outside the box, they were able to create a stable plan that could easily be adjusted.

“Graduation looked different this year…” said Kliewer. Screening graduates, faculty and event staff made it difficult. Those who attended even felt the wrath of the Kansas wind.

“The wind...” said Kliewer. “The day before was calm as calm could be. But of course, the day of graduation: wind.”

The celebration did not go as planned, but the Tabor graduation planning team made the best of it. Graduates and their families were honored, and the Kansas wind was still useful for making some amusing pictures.

by Destiny Cooper Special Anti-Robbery Squad is a federal police unit in Nigeria, Africa. SARS has existed for nearly three decades, according to the Washington Post. However, over the last few years, SARS has been accused of abusing its power with beatings, hangings, mock executions, sexual assault and waterboarding. In response to SARS in 2017, many took to social media to start the hashtag EndSARS with hopes to spread awareness to the rest of the world about the horrors happening in Nigeria.

SARS primarily targets young Nigerian citizens who are regarded as being successful.

According to Twitter influencer Chinyelugo, Nigerians fear for their lives every day, not knowing if or when they will be the next victim of the discriminatory and inhumane SARS regime.

Head Coach Rylan Hincher Leads Cross Country to Success

Some horrific issues SARS is causing are acts against basic human rights, such as the right to assemble and protest. Osai Ojigho, country director of Amnesty International Nigeria, said, “Opening fire on peaceful protestors is a bla-

tant violation of people’s rights to life, dignity, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Soldiers had one intention – to kill without consequences.”

Nigerian citizens have taken to the streets to advocate against SARS and raise awareness to what’s been happening. But protestors can’t even protest without being harassed, brutalized and killed. Police brutality is being brought into the light all over the world as SARS protests are all too similar to the Black Lives Matter movement in America.

On the other hand, a few ways those who aren’t directly affected by SARS brutality can help contribute to the #EndSARS movement by reposting any information that may come across media platforms, continuously pressuring the Nigerian government and officials to stop the unpunished police brutalities. The Nigerian government responsible for these murders committed by SARS cannot go unnoticed worldwide and without penalty any longer. Nigeria depends on us now!

The Tabor cross country teams have experienced tremendous success to this point in their fall season.

A large reason for this success has been the coaching and training of newly hired head coach Rylan Hincher. When Hincher came to Tabor in the summer of 2019 as a graduate assistant, the men’s team had dwindled to two scholarship runners, and the women’s team was about to graduate some of their top runners after the season.

The men’s team is currently ranked third in KCAC and consists of 11 members including seven freshmen, while the women’s team is ranked fourth and has nine runners–four of whom are newcomers.

Top runner AJ Miller, freshman, and sophomore Pierce Klaassen highlight the newcomers for the men, while junior Abigail Sechrist, senior Sarah Bird and freshman Danielle Allison have been great additions for the women.

Tabor was not Hincher’s first choice after finishing his undergraduate degree and running career at

Montreat College in North Carolina. He hoped to find somewhere closer to home where he could pursue either athletic training or coaching, but when Tabor hired him, Hincher found himself bound for Kansas.

Hincher admits that his first year away from his family was hard, but he also points out that he has grown tremendously in his walk with Jesus and has matured greatly during his time at Tabor.

One of Hincher’s greatest coaching attributes is his recruiting ability. When he first heard how small the men’s team was before he came, he said he remembers thinking, “I am going to have to do a lot of recruiting.”

Hincher has not disappointed in this area as the number of Tabor’s runners nearly doubled in just over a year. Hincher is also confident that this growth will continue. For next year’s roster, he has already signed three women and is close to signing several men.

Wildfires Make Marks on California and Colorado

According to NASA’s Earth Observatory, “nearly 80 percent of the region (west of Rocky Mountains) is facing some level of drought, affecting 40 million people.” Causes of these wildfires stem from lightning storms, parched vegetation and possible climate change.

In northern Colorado, the Cameron Peak fire consumed 206,000 acres by Oct. 21, making it the largest wildfire in Colorado, surpassing the Pine Gulch fire that burned 139,007 acres a month earlier.

Fortunately, the Cameron Peak fire did not claim any human lives.

The wildfire in northern California consumed over 1 million acres by Oct. 21. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, more than 4.13 million acres of the state have burned and

more than 9,200 structures have been damaged or destroyed. This massive fire has claimed 31 lives.

These fires have already affected many people at a quick rate; many may still lose their homes, jobs, farmland and other structures as the fires rage on.

The fires tremendously affect the atmosphere and ultimately the ability to breathe, causing lung issues due to the smoke and ashes.

While a large population is facing the fires, the rest of the country can offer assistance. There are many ways to help those who are such as donating to wildfire relief funds (www.californiawildfirerelief. org/donate and www.colorado.gov), helping humane societies rescue animals, and bringing food to pantries for those who have lost most or all of their resources. Every effort is an important one.

SPORTS UPDATES Football Update

by Avery Unruh In the month of October, the Tabor Bluejays football team began to show promising notes. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has affected the rest of their season.

As of Nov. 14, the Bluejays have lost four games while winning two, leaving them in the bottom half of the conference standings.

On Oct. 17, the team won their first game by conquering the University of Saint Mary Spires. Quarterback Trey McGee led the team in both rushing and passing yards. In the second half, Brooks Gardner recovered a USM fumble for a 66-yard touchdown, helping the Bluejays to their 20-0 victory.

After their first victory, the team snuck past the Bethany College Swedes 27-21 for their first home win of the year Oct. 24. Just a week later, though, Tabor was roughly put back in its place by Avila University. Tabor went into the second half down 24-0 but could not complete one scoring drive, handing the game to the Eagles for a brutal 59-0 loss.

Volleyball Update

by Emma Willison The Lady Jays were on the road Oct. 8 to face conference competitor Avila.

Tabor took the set against Avila with a 3-1 victory. The Jays remain undefeated in the conference by collecting wins in early October at the KCAC Triangular.

On Oct. 12, the Lady Jays traveled to Salina, Kan., for a KCAC Triangular with McPherson College and Kansas Wesleyan. Tabor fought hard by splitting the set with a 3-0 win over McPherson and 0-3 against Kansas Wesleyan. The Jays competed with KWU totaling 40 kills in the match led by Haylee Barta and Olivia Duerksen.

To end October, Tabor swept defending KCAC champion Saint Mary on their home court, picking up a 3-0 win. Junior Taylor Burns led the way with nine kills on the night followed by senior Olivia Duerksen and junior Taylor Quiring collecting eight a piece. The CKAC Triangular scheduled for Nov. 14 against Ottawa and Oklahoma Wesleyan University was postponed.

Women’s Soccer Update

by Destiny Cooper The women’s soccer team faced a tough opponent Nov. 7, dropping a 1-0 game to Avila University. Tabor’s player of the game was Macey Darrah, according to graduate assistant Araceli Wallace-Carmona.

“She is a constant player on the field regardless what game it is,” Wallace-Carmona said about Darrah. “She is definitely a player that we rely heavily on.”

In the light of the COVID-19 outbreak, Wallace-Carmona said they have been preparing the women mentally for this season. She also said that if the women truly want to finish with a great season, then they will continue to make smart decisions to stay focused and ready no matter what may come.

Men’s Soccer Update

by Destiny Cooper Tabor’s men soccer team faced off against Avila University Nov. 7, sealing the deal with a 2-0 win while also sealing head coach Grant Brubacher’s 100th win since leading the Bluejays. The two goals scored by the Bluejays came from freshman Jonathan Davis and senior Dane Pedersen. The team pressured Avila’s goalkeeper through the game with constant attempts to score, leading to a big win for the Bluejays as their season’s end quickly approaches.

Men’s Cross Country Update

by Jessica Klein The men’s cross country team has only continued to improve following a fourth place win out of seven teams at Tabor’s very own Cottonwood Challenge on Sept. 26.

The month of October brought COVID-19 cancellations at both Fort Hays and Bethel. To make up for these cancellations, a timed trial was held at Tabor Oct. 9.

The men have only continued to show off, placing fifth out of 14 teams at Southwestern’s Mid-States Classic on Oct. 25. Freshman Andrew Miller finished 27th with a two-minute personal best, with all of his teammates following close behind at either under or near the 28-minute mark.

Through the end of the season, the team has undergone strict measures to ensure that all runners are healthy and prepared for more in the midst of a new COVID-19 outbreak.

Women’s Cross Country Update

by Jessica Klein Following two back-to-back meet cancellations, a timed trial was held Oct. 9 under Tabor’s stadium lights to encourage the team to continue to strive for personal bests.

Southwestern’s Mid-States Classic on Oct. 25 was a boost of confidence for the Lady Bluejays, with every runner finishing with either a personal or seasonal best. The team as a whole placed fourth out of 10 teams, with Conangela Senior and Abigail Sechrist leading the pack.

Senior and Sechrist led again in the biggest race of their season: the KCAC Championship meet. Finishing ninth and 20th respectively, the two have paved a way to nationals, to be held April 9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Women’s Swimming Update

by Emma Willison The Tabor Bluejays’ swim team opened their season in Edmond, Okla., at the Sam Freas Memorial Invitational where they competed against a handful of strong NCAA Division II competitors. This was an unscored meet that allowed swimmers to return to the pool after a long-awaited season. Individually, freshman Emma Heide led the Bluejays by finishing sixth in the 200-yard individual medley, eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 19th in the 50-yard freestyle.

Additionally, freshman Millie Sechrist had two seventh-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Men’s Swimming Update

by Emma Willison Junior Jonathan Austin had a standout finish at the Sam Freas Memorial by placing sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, 10th in the 100-yard fly, and 13th in the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Logen Peterson also contributed for the Bluejays by finishing seventh in the 500 freestyle and 11th in the 100 backstroke.

The men and women then traveled to Leavenworth, Kan., Oct. 24 for the Saint Mary Relays. The team fought hard but fell short to Morningside College and Saint Mary. Tabor was back in action at Sterling College Nov. 5 against conference foe Saint Mary and Sterling College. The Jays battled with competitive times but were unable to defeat the first and second teams in the KCAC. Amidst COVID-19 regulations, spectators were not allowed at this meet. Tabor’s next contest will be at home Jan. 23 versus Saint Mary.

SPORTS UPDATES Football Update

by Avery Unruh In the month of October, the Tabor Bluejays football team began to show promising notes. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has affected the rest of their season.

As of Nov. 14, the Bluejays have lost four games while winning two, leaving them in the bottom half of the conference standings.

On Oct. 17, the team won their first game by conquering the University of Saint Mary Spires. Quarterback Trey McGee led the team in both rushing and passing yards. In the second half, Brooks Gardner recovered a USM fumble for a 66-yard touchdown, helping the Bluejays to their 20-0 victory.

After their first victory, the team snuck past the Bethany College Swedes 27-21 for their first home win of the year Oct. 24. Just a week later, though, Tabor was roughly put back in its place by Avila University. Tabor went into the second half down 24-0 but could not complete one scoring drive, handing the game to the Eagles for a brutal 59-0 loss.

Volleyball Update

by Emma Willison The Lady Jays were on the road Oct. 8 to face conference competitor Avila.

Tabor took the set against Avila with a 3-1 victory. The Jays remain undefeated in the conference by collecting wins in early October at the KCAC Triangular.

On Oct. 12, the Lady Jays traveled to Salina, Kan., for a KCAC Triangular with McPherson College and Kansas Wesleyan. Tabor fought hard by splitting the set with a 3-0 win over McPherson and 0-3 against Kansas Wesleyan. The Jays competed with KWU totaling 40 kills in the match led by Haylee Barta and Olivia Duerksen.

To end October, Tabor swept defending KCAC champion Saint Mary on their home court, picking up a 3-0 win. Junior Taylor Burns led the way with nine kills on the night followed by senior Olivia Duerksen and junior Taylor Quiring collecting eight a piece. The CKAC Triangular scheduled for Nov. 14 against Ottawa and Oklahoma Wesleyan University was postponed.

Women’s Soccer Update

by Destiny Cooper The women’s soccer team faced a tough opponent Nov. 7, dropping a 1-0 game to Avila University. Tabor’s player of the game was Macey Darrah, according to graduate assistant Araceli Wallace-Carmona.

“She is a constant player on the field regardless what game it is,” Wallace-Carmona said about Darrah. “She is definitely a player that we rely heavily on.”

In the light of the COVID-19 outbreak, Wallace-Carmona said they have been preparing the women mentally for this season. She also said that if the women truly want to finish with a great season, then they will continue to make smart decisions to stay focused and ready no matter what may come.

Men’s Soccer Update

by Destiny Cooper Tabor’s men soccer team faced off against Avila University Nov. 7, sealing the deal with a 2-0 win while also sealing head coach Grant Brubacher’s 100th win since leading the Bluejays. The two goals scored by the Bluejays came from freshman Jonathan Davis and senior Dane Pedersen. The team pressured Avila’s goalkeeper through the game with constant attempts to score, leading to a big win for the Bluejays as their season’s end quickly approaches.

Men’s Cross Country Update

by Jessica Klein The men’s cross country team has only continued to improve following a fourth place win out of seven teams at Tabor’s very own Cottonwood Challenge on Sept. 26.

The month of October brought COVID-19 cancellations at both Fort Hays and Bethel. To make up for these cancellations, a timed trial was held at Tabor Oct. 9.

The men have only continued to show off, placing fifth out of 14 teams at Southwestern’s Mid-States Classic on Oct. 25. Freshman Andrew Miller finished 27th with a two-minute personal best, with all of his teammates following close behind at either under or near the 28-minute mark.

Through the end of the season, the team has undergone strict measures to ensure that all runners are healthy and prepared for more in the midst of a new COVID-19 outbreak.

Women’s Cross Country Update

by Jessica Klein Following two back-to-back meet cancellations, a timed trial was held Oct. 9 under Tabor’s stadium lights to encourage the team to continue to strive for personal bests.

Southwestern’s Mid-States Classic on Oct. 25 was a boost of confidence for the Lady Bluejays, with every runner finishing with either a personal or seasonal best. The team as a whole placed fourth out of 10 teams, with Conangela Senior and Abigail Sechrist leading the pack.

Senior and Sechrist led again in the biggest race of their season: the KCAC Championship meet. Finishing ninth and 20th respectively, the two have paved a way to nationals, to be held April 9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Women’s Swimming Update

by Emma Willison The Tabor Bluejays’ swim team opened their season in Edmond, Okla., at the Sam Freas Memorial Invitational where they competed against a handful of strong NCAA Division II competitors. This was an unscored meet that allowed swimmers to return to the pool after a long-awaited season. Individually, freshman Emma Heide led the Bluejays by finishing sixth in the 200-yard individual medley, eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 19th in the 50-yard freestyle.

Additionally, freshman Millie Sechrist had two seventh-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke.

Men’s Swimming Update

by Emma Willison Junior Jonathan Austin had a standout finish at the Sam Freas Memorial by placing sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, 10th in the 100-yard fly, and 13th in the 200-yard freestyle. Freshman Logen Peterson also contributed for the Bluejays by finishing seventh in the 500 freestyle and 11th in the 100 backstroke.

The men and women then traveled to Leavenworth, Kan., Oct. 24 for the Saint Mary Relays. The team fought hard but fell short to Morningside College and Saint Mary. Tabor was back in action at Sterling College Nov. 5 against conference foe Saint Mary and Sterling College. The Jays battled with competitive times but were unable to defeat the first and second teams in the KCAC. Amidst COVID-19 regulations, spectators were not allowed at this meet. Tabor’s next contest will be at home Jan. 23 versus Saint Mary.

The Heart of Tabor’s Campus Pastor

by Toby Penner Prior to this semester, Ryan Lee had been juggling two very important roles on Tabor’s campus: residential educator and campus pastor. This summer, however, Lee was able to transition into serving full-time as Tabor’s campus pastor.

This transition allows Lee to focus his efforts directly on the student body as a whole. He can now devote more time to the spiritual needs of Tabor students, especially through individual encouragement and prayer.

In preparing for this semester, Lee felt God nudging him to reach out to students and offer them a chance to meet with him. He hopes that by engaging in conversation with students, he can learn about their personal journeys, ways he can lift them up in prayer and how to better serve them as their pastor.

Lee said he has also experienced a highly increased passion to support Tabor students through prayer.

“Prayer can encourage and empower students to step out into their own ministry,” Lee said.

Another way Lee serves as campus pastor is through facilitating Tabor’s chapel services. This responsibility includes connecting with potential speakers, inviting them to campus and occasionally bringing the chapel message himself.

A main focus for Lee the past few years, and especially this semester, has been to diversify the pool of chapel speakers in order to connect with students on a deeper, more personal level. He has seen success in this effort, with half of the speakers this semester being women or representatives of minority communities.

Lee said he has observed a positive trend in the spiritual atmosphere of Tabor’s campus this semester and is excited for how God will move on campus in the future.

He said his desire is to see Tabor students walk in the freedom that comes when they surrender their lives to Jesus.

His greatest hope for students is that they realize that “God doesn’t want their compliance; he wants their heart.”

The Search Begins

Big news struck Tabor’s campus Thursday, Oct. 22, as President Jules Glanzer and the Board of Directors announced the beginning of a presidential transition process.

Executive Committee of the Board will be serving as the Presidential Transition Discernment Committee, and a search committee will be formed soon to find the newly elected leader within the next 18 months.

“Effectively leading Tabor into the next era will require a president who has the energy, stamina and capacity needed to address and respond to many challenges,” said Glanzer, who has been serving in the role for almost 13 years. “This is just the next phase.”

“I personally want to finish well and have a smooth transition,” Glanzer said.

While serving within this last decade, Glanzer has experienced many challenges, and has therefore learned a lot. He said that he still lives with a sense of wonderment that he has been able to serve Christ, his alma mater and the college that has impacted his family.

Through his time in the presidential position, he has developed countless positive memories as well.

Some of those memories include the dedication of the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts in 2017, time spent with the Presidential Leadership Scholars and witnessing multiple athletic runs, said Glanzer.

Now that the transitional process has begun, steps are being taken toward identifying a new leader. The

Dr. Wendell Loewen, a professor within the religion department, Director of Faith Front, and the faculty representative to the Board, is one of many individuals that will assist in the process. Glanzer’s roles will consist of actively serving as president until the Board has someone to fill his position and assisting the selected leader for a period of time to get them started.

Loewen said he has a good sense of what the Board will be looking for. For instance, the replacement should be someone who understands Christian higher education, will continue strong constituent relations and raising funds, recognizes that the classroom is what defines a college and a leader who embraces Tabor’s identity as an institution.

“We want to find someone who will be the right president for this place at this time,” said Loewen.

Homecoming ‘Host and Hostess’ Winners Sarah Bird and Trajen Smith

Student Senate October Update

Throughout the fall semester, Student Senate held meetings for club funding, special requests, campus improvements, and general meetings. The following clubs received funds to support their activities for the year: Social Justice Club, The Bluejay Yearbook, Science Club, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and Marketing Club. Additionally, Elizabeth George received funding to represent Tabor at the OpenJar Institute. George explained this opportunity as “a Broadway intensive for college students around the country that helps them gain insight and experience in theatre.” Student Senate also contributed funds and volunteered at Tabor’s second annual Trick or Treat event on Halloween night. With the flu season approaching, Student Senate was additionally able to financially provide for the flu shot clinic held on campus. We are honored and thankful to be able to extend funding to these various organizations and individuals.

Another success of the semester was homecoming, hosted by the Student Senate senior class representatives: Madison Johnson, Whitnee Patterson, Kaileigh Dill, Sarah Bird, Nathan Ahrens and Aleen Ratzlaff. These individuals did an outstanding job hosting homecoming, especially considering the adjustments in response to COVID-19. We are thankful for their flexibility, patience and efforts in making this a special event.

Looking ahead to Interterm and the spring semester, Student Senate will be focusing on a budget review and funding multiple campus projects. We have a number of projects in mind and are excited to continually improve the student experience. We will be holding meetings beginning in January on Fridays at 10 a.m. in the Lohrenz Chapel. These meetings are open to all students to share their voices.
