Professor Profiles: Get to Know New Tabor Faculty

New additions to the Tabor College faculty are in abundance this year. From education to athletic training, Tabor has welcomed new professors who are making an impact on campus in their first years.

Brenna Haines - Education

GM: What has been your favorite aspect of Tabor?

JM: My favorite things about Tabor are the college and the Hillsboro community. Everyone is welcoming and helpful. This is unique, and I feel that it is a result of the presence of Christ.

GM: Was there anything about Tabor that surprised you?

JM: Other than how fast the semester has flown by or the snow we received a few weeks ago, there have been no surprises.

GM: What are you looking forward to in your future at Tabor?

JM: I look forward to further opportunities to plug into the communities and use my gifts to serve as needed.

GM: What is your past teaching experience?

JM: My past experience of being an instructor (not faculty) for biology laboratories at the University of Tulsa prepared me for my role here. There are more hats to wear in my current role, but the opportunity to design and teach what I’m interested in is definitely a perk.

GM: What has been your favorite aspect of Tabor so far?

BH: The students! [They’re] a great group of talented, kind individuals.

GM: Was there anything about Tabor that has surprised you?

BH: It’s hard for students to hide from faculty if they “skip” class. This makes me laugh.

GM: What are you looking forward to in your future at Tabor?

BH: Teaching a variety of subjects that I love.

GM: What is your past teaching experience?

BH: I’ve taught high school and college math, economics and statistics for 16 years. Amongst these years, I have also taught education coursework from 2009 to the present.

Jenica Moore - Athletic Training

GM: What has been your favorite aspect of Tabor?

JM: My favorite aspect of Tabor has really been getting to know the students. I have had opportunities to meet many athletes in the athletic training room and to get to know them through working with them. It has been great to be in an environment where I get to have a pretty direct impact on students, and vice versa.

GM: Was there anything about Tabor that has surprised you?

JM: I have been pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of extracurriculars here. I was able to watch “My Fair Lady” during homecoming weekend, and look forward to additional theater and music productions. Of course, I also enjoy watching the various athletic teams compete as well.

GM: What are you looking forward to in your future at Tabor?

JM: I am looking forward to continuing to meet more students and developing meaningful relationships with them. I have never worked in a primarily Christian environment before, so getting to share my faith openly and hear of others’ hearts for Christ has been awesome so far, and I really look forward to that continuing as I get to know more people in my future here.

GM: What is your past teaching experience?

JM: I actually have no prior formal teaching experience in a school setting. I came to Tabor after four years of outpatient physi-

GM: What has been your favorite aspect of Tabor?

BJA: The Christian environment at Tabor makes it a wonderful place to work. It is a privilege to be able to share Christ with the students and to be open about my faith.

GM: Was there anything about Tabor that surprised you?

BJA: Regardless of race, nationality, beliefs, politics, Tabor welcomes and makes each of their students, faculty and staff feel at home. This is the beauty of our Christian faith lived out in action.

GM: What are you looking forward to in your future at Tabor?

BJA: I am looking forward to sharing the Gospel more with the students and continuing to educate them about scientific research.

I am looking forward to setting up a research lab for drug discovery and design, and to mentoring students in this research. Mentoring students scientifically, socially, spiritually and professionally is an investment with long-term and eternal rewards.

GM: What is your past teaching experience?

BJA: I taught chemistry and organic chemistry for seven years at the American University of Madaba, Jordan.

GM: What are your plans after graduation?

JN: My plans are to get a job for a year, then go back home (to Tanzania) and invest in opening an orphanage for children, providing jobs and helping women find jobs in the community.

GM: What is your major, and why did you choose it?

JN: Business marketing/sports management--I’m interested in sports because it’s a way to reach out to the youth, and I’d love to be someone’s role model in life. The reason I picked business is because I can branch out into different jobs.

GM: What advice do you have for freshmen?

LR: Don’t procrastinate, try to branch out and meet different kinds of people and make friends because it makes college a lot more enjoyable.

GM: Is there anything you wish you could have done differently during your time at Tabor?

LR: I should have pulled more pranks. There are people I met this year I wish I would have gotten to know earlier.

Zach Stutzman

GM: What are your plans for after graduation?

ZS: My plans are to go on a mission trip and take a break from school to over the summer, then I’ll go home and try to find a job.

GM: What advice do you have for freshmen?

ZS: Caring about your personal health is so important. I ate so much junk food during my freshman year.

GM: What advice do you have for freshmen?

AMO: Go hard or go home.

GM: What is your major, and why did you choose it?

AMO: Finance/Accounting and business management--I chose it because I feel that knowing what finance accounting has to offer you is vital to making a company work.

GM: Is there anything you wish you could have done differently during your time at Tabor?

AMO: Being a country singer like Billy Wiser.

Social Justice Club Collects Items for Operation Christmas Child

Christmas time is near, and it’s widely known as a time to give and receive gifts. Unfortunately, some circumstances hinder and prevent many people from experiencing this norm at Christmas time.

Tabor College’s Social Justice Club announced in October that they would be participating in Operation Christmas Child. The main goal for Operation Christmas Child is for students to donate items to be shipped to those in need.

Items donated by Tabor students included school supplies, craft supplies, toiletries and clothing and accessories.

Senior Danielle Armstrong headed up the project and knows the impact that the donations can make for the lives of others.

“I think students are able to learn more about giving back and about poverty and how we as students/people can take things like pencils, toothbrushes and soap for granted,” said Armstrong. “I have seen students get really excited

about this, and some are still not sure, which is normal. We’re hoping that when we come together as a campus for the packing party that there is a sense of community and a presence of God’s love for all people.”

Starting the project has been long and hard, but the effect from it should feel rewarding for us all.

“The process has been work, but it has been amazing being able to educate others and challenge my peers,” said Armstrong. “It’s been an over-two-month-long process to get this happening, but there have been amazing results.”

The Tabor College community has done a great job in donating items to help people in need, she said, adding the she’s expecting Operation Christmas Child to benefit others.

The next step after all donations have been received is to have the packing party to pack all the gifts and ship them.

“Hopefully the packing party will be a good success,” said Armstrong.

What is a Mennonite Anyway?

The Return of Java Jays

Students lack the fix of brewed and blended motivation for their evening homework sessions as the beloved Java Jays coffee shop is undergoing a remodel.

The remodel of Java Jays has been part of the Student Center renovation project since April of this year.

Returning students who had grown accustomed to their evening coffee are asking a critical question to the shop’s co-managers Austin Calam and Michael Prichard: is Java Jays open yet?

“I think I’ve been asked probably 50 to 100 times if Java Jays is open, which is a large number for a small campus,” Prichard said.

This semester, two possible dates for the grand reopening - mid-September and homecoming - have come and gone while the space behind the counter remains lifeless.

Communication became unsteady during changes in Student Life administrative personnel from the previous semester through the summer, which became one of the leading causes of the delay in opening.

“There was a lot of change and turnover in ways that affected us, so because of that communication really just got lost on whom we should talk to for what,” Prichard said.

“It’s not our own shop, so we have to have help. We just didn’t know where to grab it at the right time.”

In the last month as personnel has settled into new roles, tremendous improvements have been made in mending the communication issues between Student Life and the Facilities Department.

“They’re encouraging, and they want to work together,” Calam said. “They’re on our side.”

Another large influence on the timeliness of the renovation lay heavily on the physical construction of Java Jays, which is being crafted by the Facilities Department.

As maintenance emergencies occur in other places on campus, Facilities staff are pulled from the Java Jays project to fix other, more pressing issues.

“We were told that we’re of first importance, besides emergencies and urgent things,” Prichard said. “Opening day is indefinite, but we’ll open as soon as we can.”

Calam’s initial hopes for the space’s interior exactly mirrored any standard coffee shop, but physical and circumstantial barriers prevented that dream.

“Due to technical limitations, we’ve had to make a lot of adjustments to that initial plan,” Calam said. “It’s disappointing that we have to change it, but the good of that shows that these guys on the maintenance crew are trying to achieve what we’re asking them to do.”

Though the outside of the shop may appear finished, much of the interior must be redone to accommodate the desired workspace.

The front counter will be shortened in width while the back counter will be lengthened significantly, and a half barn door is planned to be inserted into the north entrance. Drink menus will find their places on the interior and exterior of the shop, and drink-making supplies will need to be placed in the correct spots after construction has been finished, which is still uncertain.

“There’s still a lot to do, but we know exactly what is going to happen,” Prichard said.

Through the confusion and disappointment at the shop’s long renovation, students have not given up hope for Java Jays’ return.

“There’s two sides: frustration of ‘you guys aren’t open,’ but also excitement of ‘I can’t wait until it’s back,’” Prichard said. “Once we’re open, we’re just gonna party.”

While supporters of Java Jays will have to wait a while longer to get their evening drinks again, Calam said that students can expect the coffee shop to bounce back with similar products and improved service.

“We are extremely excited to reopen Java Jays and to be able to provide a service that is of the same quality as we delivered before at a faster rate.”

SPORTS UPDATES Womens Basketball

The women kicked off the preseason with nine returning KCAC All-Conference players. The team is led by seniors Taylor Deniston and Morgan Ediger.

Already a lot of eyes are focused on team after receiving 216 votes for first place in the KCAC, with Bethany coming in second with 196 votes.

The Bluejays are returning all five starters from last season. Both the media poll and coaches poll project Tabor to win the KCAC after claiming the KCAC Tournament Championship last year and qualifying for Nationals.

Tabor started its season with a loss to College of the Ozarks, ranked sixth in the NAIA. The team proceeded to win its next two games against Dallas Christian and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

The Bluejays hosted the Tabor Classic and played against Presentation College on Nov. 9 and William Woods University Nov. 10. They won against Presentation 59-46 and against William Woods 45-38.

Men’s Basketball

In preseason, the Tabor College men’s basketball team was already making an impact in the rankings. They were picked fifth in the media poll and seventh in the coaches poll.

Tabor will have new faces to take over the team after losing five seniors from last year. Seniors Diontre Cutliff and Nick Lee will take on the role as leaders of the team in the 2018-’19 season.

The men kicked off their season at Point Lookout, Mo. They started off with a loss against College of the Ozarks and 14th ranked Bellevue.

The Bluejays were able to come out with their first win against Nebraska Christian College in a 97-68 blowout.

The men hosted the Tabor Classic against Central Methodist and Barclay College in two non-conference games Nov. 9-10. They lost to Central Methodist 96-79 and won against Barclay 109-71.

Volleyball

After a difficult season with a new coach, Tabor decided to change the direction of the team, giving Tesha Werth the head coach position late in October.

Werth was able to motivate the team and win her first two matches against Southwestern and Bethel.

Bluejay volleyball finished its regular season play Oct. 31 on senior night. Jacey Guy, Jessanna Nebel, Kendra Kroeker, Mikayla Peterson, Katie Frankenberry, Tianna Frazell and Keeley Kroeker all played their last game at Tabor College.

The women competed with the 24th-ranked Ottawa, but it still wasn’t enough to come out on top in a 3-0 loss.

The Bluejays then traveled to Hutchinson for the KCAC Tournament. They lost 3-0 to McPherson and won 3-2 against Bethany, ranked eighth in the KCAC.

9 Cross Country

Tabor College cross-country teams participated in the KCAC Cross Country meet hosted by Bethel College on Nov. 3 in Newton.

The women placed fifth and received 143 points. The team was led by senior Julie Loewen and junior Emily Kemling. Loewen placed sixth with a time of 19:09.5, and Kemling placed ninth with a time of 19:21.5. Loewen and Kemling were also named NAIA national qualifiers because of their performances.

The men finished in 11th place and received 311 points. Junior Garrett Kinsey led the way for the men, running a time of 29:37.9 and placing 54th in the race.

Golf

Tabor’s golf team hosted the Tabor Invitational Oct. 15-16 at Sand Creek Station in Newton. The team finished the tournament with a combined score of 673 and placed 11th out of 12 teams.

Freshman Logan Mathews continued his season as he shot a 71 on the second day of the invitational. Mathews led the Jays and finished the tournament with a score of 147.

The Bluejay golf program looks to have a promising future under the direction of Coach Mike Jamieson and will build off its first fall season in over a decade.

Soccer

The women’s soccer season concluded after a loss of 3-0 in the KCAC Tournament Quarterfinals against the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles. The Lady Jays finished the season with a 6-8-4 overall record and a conference record of 5-4-4.

The men’s soccer season also came to an end in the KCAC Tournament Quarterfinals against the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles, being defeated by a score of 3-0. The Jays would finish the season with a 7-10-1 overall record and a conference record of 5-7-1.

Senior Araceli Wallace Carmona received second-team all-conference honors. Alexis Olivares, senior; Hannah Armand, junior; Courtney Yochum, senior; and seniors Karla Monroy and Ruby-Anne Fines all received all-conference honorable mention honors.

For the men, senior Oscar Moyano received second-team all-conference honors and sophomore Christopher Aguilar received honorable mention all-conference honors.

Swimming

Tabor College men’s and women’s swim team hosted Simpson College on Oct. 27 at Salina South High School. Before the matchup, Tabor recognized Evan Bell and Aleya Hill for Senior Day. For the women’s competition, Tabor posted a time of 4:41.39 and won with swimmers Mariana Nassuno Alves, Michal Parris, Annika Highstrom and Maddie Donohue in the 400-yard medley relay.

Other highlights featured Parris winning the 1650-yard freestyle, Donohue winning the 200-yard freestyle and Lonna Porter winning the 50-yard freestyle.

For the men, Bell led the way for the Jays as he placed first in three races.

Tabor men won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a posted time of 3:41.21 with swimmers Bell, Danny Smith, Jonathan Austin and Nick Bradley. Victories from Austin in the men’s 200-yard butterfly and Bradley in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke were other highlights from the meet.

The Tabor women’s swim team would fall short and lose by a close score of 93-91 and the men would also lose 88-71.

Tabor Performs “Hansel and Gretel” with Help of the Community Gallagher Martin

Tabor College, along with students from Hillsboro High School, Hillsboro Middle School and Hillsboro Elementary School, performed “Hansel and Gretel” Nov. 8-10 in front of a sold-out Prieb Harder Black Box Theater crowd.

Set in Germany, the plot centers around a brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel, who are kidnapped by a cannibalistic witch deep in the forest. The duo eventually escape with their lives after teaming up and pushing the witch into an oven.

The opera consisted of a leading cast of Tabor students with Hillsboro public school students making up the supporting cast. Consisting of two acts totaling 60 minutes, the production was well received by the audience.

After opening night, director Jen Stephenson was pleased with the environment on the stage and in the crowd.

“It went really well,” Stephenson said. “We had a standingroom-only crowd. People were really receptive, and I think the students had a really good time.”

Senior Winter Waple, who played Gretel, also felt positive after opening night.

“I loved how they were all so excited to be here,” Stephenson said. “Most of them didn’t know anything about opera, so it was really neat to proudly tell their friends, ‘I’m in an opera.’”

According to Waple, the additional students made a large, positive impact on the opera.

“I thought it brought such a different feel to the show,” Waple said. “It’s something I’ve never experienced, having all of these little (kids) running around, and I really think it brought the show to the next level.”

After initial worries, Huxman enjoyed her youthful coactors as well.

“It was stressful at first, but once they got corralled it was a lot of fun,” Huxman said. “Overall, I think it went well, and I’m happy with it.”

Tabor College will feature another opera on April 16. The choice of production has yet to be announced.

“There were a lot of jitters, but I thought it went really well, and I’m very proud of everyone,” Waple said.

Junior Kelsey Huxman, who played Hansel, enjoyed the process of bonding with her co-actors.

“My favorite part was getting to know the people of the show a little bit better, especially the freshmen whom I didn’t know as well,” Huxman said. “Working and learning to dance with Gretel was so much fun.”

The opera featured 40 actors, many of them children at Hillsboro Elementary School. Stephenson was thrilled with the enthusiasm the children brought.

Collaborative Concert at Richert Auditorium

Tabor College Symphonic Band held its collaborative concert on Oct. 30. The band hosted Aaron Begnoche’s Moundridge High School band.

The two bands combined to put on a performance for the town of Hillsboro. Each played a couple songs for the crowd followed by both bands playing two songs together. Tabor conductor Shawn Knopp directed one while Moundridge conductor Aaron Begnoche directed the second.

Knopp gave a lot of praise to the Moundridge band for the excellent performance.

“It was collaborative in nature, but we got to share the stage with another group of musicians,” Knopp said. “In this case it was one of the finest band programs in the state: Moundridge.”

The two bands didn’t have much time to rehearse together beforehand, being that the two towns are 30 miles apart.

Knopp was initially a little nervous and anxious for the performance.

“You don’t know what you’re going to get when two dif-

ferent bands practice pieces separately and come together and rehearse them within 30 minutes of the performance,” Knopp said, chuckling to himself.

According to Knopp, the performance was astounding.

“The overall production did exceed my expectations,” Knopp said. “The dress rehearsal with Moundridge went extremely well. It can be kind of scary, but both bands were well prepared.”

Up next the band will perform its Christmas Festival concert in the Richert Auditorium on Dec. 8. It will feature the Tabor College Symphonic Band and the McPherson Community Brass Ensemble. The repertoire will include some popular Christmas carols, both secular and nonsecular. It will also feature a reading of “The Night Before Christmas.”

“The Tabor Christmas Festival will make for a fantastic evening,” Knopp said.

“Bohemian Rhapsody”: A By-The-Numbers Biopic

The musical legacy of Queen is far reaching, the group having sold over 150 million records. These musical artists exemplify the stereotypical glamour associated with 80’s rock bands, and director Bryan Singer seeks to capture the extravagance of this stereotype with middling results.

In his second attempt at a biopic, Singer depicts the story of legendary singer Freddie Mercury. While this film displays the formation and downfall of Queen as a whole, Rami Malek’s performance as Freddie Mercury blows the rest of the cast out of the water. In the transition from young Farrokh Bulsara to Freddie Mercury, Malek portrays the rock star with emotion and authenticity. Rami Malek transforms into Freddie Mercury over the course of the film.

It is unfortunate, then, that the film Malek has to work with is so poorly paced. The film dedicates an exorbitant amount of time to recreating many of the remarkable concerts that define Queen as a band. These scenes are enjoyable, and they showcase the most popular Queen tracks. However, they drag on to excess with the the story falling to the wayside. These scenes pad out the film to

the point where the two-hour-and-fifteen-minute film feels excruciatingly long.

The choice to emphasize spectacle over story is detrimental to the film. For example, Ben Hardy does a fantastic job in his performance as Roger Taylor, but has far too little screen time to truly shine. When he does appear in the film, he is often relegated to the background of one of the gaudy concert recreations. In the scenes where the band members are interacting with one another, there are many examples of clever dialogue. However, these scenes make up only a small portion of film. Once again, Singer fails to make the most of the talented cast.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is a painfully average biopic. For every aspect that stands out, like the talented cast, there are several issues that prevent the film from being spectacular. The movie suffers from pacing issues where the plot is thrown away to focus on spectacle and 80’s nostalgia.

Ironically, a film titled after a song known for breaking conventions is itself conventional.

Freshman Survival Guide

Winter During the lovely times of freshman year, there are many things we do that we look back on and wish someone was there to help us with during that time. With a few helpful tips, I am going to be that person and help you survive the averagely brutal Kansas winter.

Since the weather is already acting up and snow has started to fall, there are a few things I can advise you on so your toes and fingers do not fall off because of frostbite and wind burn.

The first thing we are going to address is attire. The simple and most basic item you need in order to survive the cold is wool socks. Yes, wool socks. You should always take care of your feet, and wearing the proper socks will allow your toes to stay warm and your shoes to fit properly. Take my advice now when I tell you that there is no worse feeling than having cold, wet feet. Get yourself a proper pair of wool socks and tackle the cold one step at a time.

These can be found reasonably priced on Amazon, at Walmart and even at your local Dollar General.

The list of winter life hacks could go on forever, so the last item I am going to present you with is the incredibly useful electric blanket. When the heaters go out and the windows will not shut no matter how hard you slam them, the only thing that might save you is the heat radiating from your electric blanket. These blankets range from fancy to not so fancy, but will surely keep you warm during these hard winter nights.

The next item you are going to need is a pack of hand warmers. These little guys are going to be your best friend, and I recommend getting the big pack because someone is always going to forget to bring his or her own. Hand warmers are the greatest thing since sliced bread because they can can literally be taken and put anywhere desired. They have hand, toe, foot, super and even reusable warmers.

Both options will help, but make sure to always turn the blanket off before bed or else you will wake up toastier than the plates in the caf.

There are many more tips and tricks you can try while trying to stay warm this winter, but these are just a few that I feel will make the biggest difference in your life. Always remember to layer up and check the weather before heading out for the day. Jackets, gloves and pants that resist the wind and snow will make a huge difference in your level of comfort and warmth. Our campus may be small, but even a short walk in the winter will leave you with pain and regret.

How to Stay Mentally Healthy in College The topic of mental health is becoming very popular on college campuses because of the problem’s rapid growth and the community support that is starting to shape our society.

During times in the past, the topic of mental health was pushed away and forgotten because of the stigma that is attached to the topic, and honestly, the lack of knowledge.

Now that people are starting to pay more attention to the problem and acknowledge that the problem truly exists, we are finally able to tackle these illnesses and create room for discussion on college campuses.

Mental health is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as, “The condition of being sound mentally and emotionally that is characterized by the absence of mental illness and by adequate adjustment especially as reflected in feeling comfortable about oneself, positive feelings about others, and the ability to meet the demands of daily life.”

Some common illnesses include Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Personality Disorder, and Schizophrenia.

Many attainable resources and tips can help college students stay on top of their mental health. Some activities are simple, while others are more in depth and deliberate.

Some ideas might be:

Journaling your daily activities and thoughts Talking to a friend, professor or loved one Taking a break and remembering not to overwork yourself Exercising Taking a nap Prayer, meditation and yoga Having a healthy diet Self-help websites also offer long lists of ideas not stated here. For more tips and ideas to practice self-help, look around online and find an activity or technique that best suits you.

Educating yourself and others about mental health is just one of many ways to start an important conversation and end the stigma associated with mental health illnesses. When we open our hearts and our minds, we will be able to help the ones we love and truly make a difference in their lives.

Dorm Room Meals

Whether you’re too lazy to walk to the caf, need a meal to fuel your brain for finals or are simply looking for a late night snack, there’s something you can make in a microwave that satisfies your cravings. Here are three fun recipes you can make in your dorm room with either a microwave or a toaster oven. Enjoy!

BANANA BREAD MUG CAKE Prep Time: 1 minute Cook Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 6 minutes Servings: 1 Ingredients: Non-stick cooking spray 3 tbsp flour 1 tbsp 1 teas sugar 2 tbsp brown sugar 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp baking powder 1/8 tsp teas baking soda 1 egg 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 tbsp milk 1 ripe banana mashed Instructions: Spray a microwave safe mug with cooking spray.

In a bowl, or right in the mug, whisk flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add egg and combine until just incorporated with dry ingredients. Mix in vanilla, oil, milk and mashed banana.

Pop into the microwave for up to 3 minutes, with no fear to stop and check after 90 seconds for doneness.

OMELETTE IN A MUG Ingredients for 1 serving: 2 eggs ½ bell pepper, diced 2 slices ham, diced ¼ cup fresh spinach salt, to taste pepper, to taste Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a microwaveable mug.

Cook for 2-3 minutes, making sure the egg doesn’t bubble over. Stir halfway through the cooking process.

MARGHERITA PIZZA QUESADILLA Ingredients: 1 flour tortilla 1 tomato, sliced 3 oz mozzarella, sliced 4 large basil leaves, chopped Instructions: 1. Set your Toaster oven on medium-high heat.

2. Place the tortilla in the pan, and layer the tomato, mozzarella, and basil leaves on one half of the tortilla.

3. Cook for a minute before folding the empty half of the tortilla over the other side. Cook for another two minutes, or until the cheese is beginning to melt and the underside of the tortilla is brown.

4. Flip, and cook until this side is also brown.

Professional Photographer Presents Work to Students and Community

The Visual Art Department hosted Benjamin Rasmussen, a visiting photographer, on Thursday Nov. 15. Rasmussen shared his insights about professional photography to art students and presented his work to the Hillsboro community.

Derek Hamm, assistant professor of graphic design, has a number of art students who are interested in photography, but because Tabor does not provide a photography major, they lack proper training and education. To expand their understanding of the art and what a career in it looks like, Hamm said he invited Rasmussen to Tabor to share his experience.

Rasmussen’s credibility and professionalism are showcased in part in his impressive client list. His work has been commissioned by TIME magazine, the New York Times, Businessweek, and other national outlets.

Currently displayed in the Ebel Art Gallery is Rasmussen’s work titled “By The Olive Trees.” It is centered around Syrian refugees living mostly in Jordan at one of the largest refugee camps in the world. His work includes images of the refugees, a short documentary piece, and books similar to family photo albums, some of the pictures being provided by the photographer and others by the families.

Hamm’s choice to fill the Ebel Art Gallery with images of another culture not only has an educational purpose but is socially focused and stems from Tabor’s mission to be globally relevant.

“As we want to be globally relevant, I think we need to think of all people as being in something together, as something bigger than national identities,” said Hamm.

This way of encountering different cultures is a delicate practice, one that Rasmussen understands and implements well.

Rasmussen’s background gives him the perfect foundation for the work he does. He grew up on an island in the southern Philippines, attended John Brown University in Northern Arkansas, and spent a year on the Faroe Islands, population 45,000, among the descendants of Vikings. He is now based

in Denver, Colo., but his cultural experience have taught him how to approach a different culture, how to interact with the people, how to listen, and how to tell their stories with his camera.

“I appreciate (Rasmussen’s) approach to going into different cultures,” Hamm said.

Hamm and Rasmussen met in their undergrad at John Brown University, and through their interactions, Hamm learned more about asking questions such as, how do you encounter a different culture and engage with the people?

What does it mean to bring your own ideas, to listen and not impose?

But extracting the truth of a story through visual means is difficult to accomplish.

“Photography is a discipline that kind of, on its face, purports to tell the objective truth,” said Hamm, “but of course, there are all sorts of decisions encoded into a photograph.”

One consideration is that the photo projects a single moment in time. What the subject is looking at, thinking about, or feeling in that single moment are elements that speak into a photo, but they do not constitute the whole story.

Rasmussen’s objective, therefore, is to represent the Syrian refugees well – the way they would represent themselves – by listening.

Presenting truth through photography can also be openended and subjective, raising the question, why enlighten people using this medium over another, more straightforward one? Yet while presenting truth through didactic means neatly presents facts to be understood intellectually, it is not until a person encounters a culture that he or she begins to experience it.

It is Hamm’s hope that by inviting Rasmussen to Tabor to discuss his work, Hamm’s students will not only obtain a professional view into the world of photography, but they as well as the community will learn to look into a culture different from their own and use photography to listen rather than speak.

**Reflections on TC101**

Several years ago, relatively near wherever you are, an unnamed person eradicated experiential learning. It was a bold and brilliant move that made life easier for so many people; instead of taking the time to study the burgeoning new world of college, one can simply take a class to understand everything he or she could ever need to know.

Everyone since has made the wise choice to take this course; the required credit and compulsory attendance really boost the incentive to go to class each Monday or Wednesday. The split schedule is easy to follow, and no one has ever been confused as to what day the class is on or where it is located.

And of course, the best part of the class is its content; it saves the students the trouble of interacting with their college experience and the introspection that requires. By taking quizzes whose accuracy compares to the cutting-edge technology of horoscopes, the course arms students to face the unknown with as much knowledge of themselves as can

be found by studying astrology.

The content is applicable and useful no matter what one intends to study, since every major’s coursework includes non-generative writing assignments. The minimum of 1500 words of reflections and 1000 words in discussion posts develops the students’ ability to reiterate recycled ideas repeatedly in different terms.

In order to broaden students’ horizons, the course involves discussion segments wherein students can speak their minds, staunchly clutching their pre-formed perspectives, and saving each other the trouble of actually needing to make valid points. Afterall, listening and thinking require engagement and work from the student – the kind of investment nobody wants to make.

After knowing the list of the benefits of this course, one can understand why students would choose to take this mandatory class.

History of the Mary J. Regier Building

Built in 1920, the Mary J. Regier structure has stood to serve Tabor in many capacities. But as it has lost its necessary place on campus, the building will soon be demolished. To memorialize the building, a dedication service was held during homecoming weekend in front of the structure at which a history of its existence was relayed by Peggy Goertzen, director of the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies.

Mary J. Regier was a charter student of Tabor College in 1908 along with her 38 classmates. She graduated after four years and left to pursue further education at different institutions, but in 1918, Tabor experienced a fire that destroyed one of the founding buildings on the campus. This devastation caused a rallying of Tabor’s supporters to give of their resources to build a new facility. News of the fire spread to Regier, and she was struck with a desire to not only replace the destroyed building, but to add another one to Tabor’s campus. She donated her inheritance, a $15,000 annuity on her parents’ farm, to the construction of a new ladies’ home.

Her generosity sparked the college to construct a facility to accommodate the designated donation, and the ladies’ home was completed in April 1920, just before the completion of the H. W. Lohrenz building. What became known as Regier Hall contained 20 rooms for students, laundry facilities, and a kitchen and dining area. Regier served as the matron of the dormitory for 20 years.

Through the years, Regier Hall was used for much more than its original purpose as a ladies’ dormitory. It became a home for the band program from 1989 to 1991, computer services, teachers’ offices, tutor rooms, math classes, a photo lab and art rooms. As Tabor’s campus grew in size and funding, new facilities were constructed, and the Mary J. Regier building slowly gave up responsibilities.

Today the facility has been replaced as several new buildings have filled the campus. The number of classes held in the MJR dwindled until early 2018, when all of the building’s contents were removed. The facility is set to be destroyed before next year’s homecoming. It is still uncertain as to what will occupy the empty space after it is demolished, but it is likely to become an extended parking lot for the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts. Although the brick and terra cotta will no longer stand in memory of Mary J. Regier and the formative years of Tabor College, many relics will stay in the Center for Mennonite Brethren Studies to preserve the building’s memory.

“This building has been used in a multitude of ways,” Goertzen said. “Lots of people have given their time and energy through the programs and the spiritual life of Tabor College in this building.”
