Ebel Art Gallery to Feature Christian Artists

by Layci Froese

Ebel Gallery in the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts exhibits work of various artists and different types of art media with the community. The range has included photography, quilts, printmaking, mixed-media drawing, watercolors, ceramics and design work.

“Art galleries can sometimes feel intimidating if people feel pressure to have a certain experience in them or have some sort of expertise. But as a department, we really encourage the Tabor community to feel at home in the gallery and engage with the work based on their own experiences,” said Derek Hamm, associate professor of graphic design.

Currently, the exhibit features Kelly Yarbrough, a mixed-media artist based in Manhattan, Kan.

“Kelly is originally from Texas, but completed her master’s degree at K-State and developed a strong connection to the area land and ecology, specifically the tallgrass prairie region of the Flint Hills that stretches through several nearby counties including the eastern edge of Marion County,” said Hamm. “Her work pays close attention to a landscape that many people overlook or are unaware of, but that is actually an incredibly unique feature right in our backyard.”

In April, the gallery will feature a Senior Portfolio Show of work from graduating Art & Design majors. In the future, the gallery will also exhibit Tabor art professor A.R. Ebel and a group exhibition from Christians in the visual arts titled “Matter & Spirit” of which Prof. Shin-hee Chin was a part.
