Student Senate November Update

by Maddie Gallagher Senate has accomplished a lot this fall, thanks to our members’ tireless efforts to make Tabor the best it can be.

Recently, we have been working to revive the yearbook by merging it with the Tabor View. These two teams are combining to design an organization that together will promote student publications. Senate has also replaced the water and ice machine in the Schlict building with a new one, which could not have been done without the help of Terry Ens and his Facility Operations team.

Other successes include homecoming, which Taytum Miller, your senior class president, coordinated beautifully.

The student section, Blue Zone, has also been a success, thanks to Kolby Bunch-Dennis. Senate members also hosted

three booths at SAB’s Fall Fest, providing food and fun while connecting with students.

Currently, Senate is working toward replacing all the chalkboards and old whiteboards in the Lohrenz and science buildings with new whiteboards. We have also partnered with several on-campus ministry teams to create a prayer room, located in lower Lohrenz, and to help with service projects.

We are always looking to improve campus and help students grow both academically and spiritually. As Senate continues to meet this year, students are welcome to attend our meetings located below the caf in the student conference room, for which the dates and times will be emailed out.

Campus Cleanup

by Toby Penner An important aspect to making Tabor’s campus an inviting place is keeping the grounds free of trash. One student organization saw the need for the campus to receive a lift in this way and took immediate action.

The Business Club, led by President Alex Garza, started a campus cleanup event in which students and faculty participated helping to clean the campus grounds during Homecoming Week. More than 15 volunteers committed their time and effort Oct. 16-17, focusing on central areas of campus.

“The purpose of the event was to clean up the campus before Homecoming so the maintenance crew could do more homecoming-related things,” Garza said. This event did aid Tabor’s Facility Operations department in addition to giving the campus a fresh feel for alumni and community members during homecoming activities.

The business club plans to bring this event back next year because of its success. In addition to this project, Garza emphasized a vision to provide more service-oriented opportunities in which students can participate in the coming weeks and months.

Heroes--Satire

“Someday, I want to be just like the Hulk,” Caleb Faux said. At the age of 8, he recognizes society’s great role models.

“I love how the Hulk fights when he wants to,” Faux said.

“He doesn’t let other people tell him when he’s going to help; he just stands around ‘til he’s ready.”

The Maverick Cinematic Universe is full of such troubled heroes; heroes show that having a host of character flaws is normal and beneficial.

“Arrogance is hot!” said Lasondra Falsa, 18. “Ironman is epic because he knows he’s awesome; humility is so boring.”

The keys to the kingdom of heroism lie in a willingness to resort to violence. A man with a shield should bash out a robber’s brain with it.

A woman should have more than a shield and wrist braces to protect the weak. She needs a sword to be a true “Wonder Woman.”

Wonder Woman and other edgier heroes belong to the Defective Cinematic Universe. Nothing says realism like a man dressed as a bat fighting a woman dressed as a cat.

“Batman is super rich and violent,” said Aaron Maddop, 26. “He’s always ready to rumble— to drop the pain on some impoverished, petty criminals.”

Petty criminals are the small fry of the crime world; children love to see the hammer of justice fall on them.

Contrarily, villains are even edgier than heroes. One of the top grossing movies “Justification League” ($229 million) received a significantly lower review than “Go-Commit-Die Gang” ($325.1 million, audience score), proving villains can justify themselves even better than heroes.

Money runs the world of heroes, on and off the screen.

Wealth is a common theme throughout the DCU and MCU. Batman, Ironman, the Avengers and Justice League know that donations and philanthropy serve no purpose in helping the world; donations are a waste—worse is any idea to save the sea animals, because no one liked Aqua Man anyway.

Criminals recognize this trend, too. Knowing that supers won’t care about world peace, starvation or drought, villains concentrate on justifying mass killings and universal annihilation.

All it takes to be a hero is a good reason why you’re right to do what you do. Did your parents get murdered in an alley by muggers? Kill all muggers!

A hero is the one who can most justify his or her actions.

Everyone’s the victim of their own story.

The Tabor College Housing Task Force

Many students have a common grievance surrounding their housing on Tabor College’s campus. The current state of student housing has become outdated and is slowly wearing out. The topic of updating has been passed around for many years because of the challenge housing has created, and Tabor is finally seeing the start of a change.

Terry Ens, head of Facility Operations, is part of a team dedicated to providing a solution to these grievances. In July, Tabor started a Housing Task Force involving 11 different Tabor College employees and the president of Student Senate, junior Madison Gallagher. According to Ens, the goal of the task force is “to replace and/or remodel every housing facility on Tabor’s campus.”

The task force formed this goal by two different methods.

The first of these came through careful records of the many repairs and projects done for student housing on campus through the years.

“Stuff is just flat wearing out,” Ens said.

The second source of information was received through a Student Satisfaction Index compiled by Gallagher. This

survey asked questions gathered students’ opinions of their living conditions.

“After the Student Satisfaction Index, it really became clear that there is an issue,” Ens said.

Currently, the task force has been studying the gathered information as well as other schools’ solutions to similar problems. The team has also taken a trip to another college in North Platte, Neb., to review a new housing complex and gauge the response of the students and the community.

They were able to interview students living in the housing complex, gaining valuable opinions to guide Tabor’s own housing plans.

Moving forward, Tabor plans to start a fundraising and awareness campaign. The initiative for this movement was recently approved by the Tabor College Board of Directors to start the process of building support and fundraising for building projects.

Ens said the task force’s excitement has increased as the project moves forward.

“The board’s support behind this project was phenomenal.”

Tabor’s Trick or Treat

Tabor hosted an event on the night of Oct. 31 that is hoped to become an annual tradition. Tabor’s Trick or Treat featured 14 superheroes and princesses in full costume.

More than 60 volunteers from the college’s community lent their time and effort to make the night a success, and over 500 people, including both parents and children, participated in the event. Those who came enjoyed a positive atmosphere and collected a few pieces of candy.

The night of Halloween, however, was not the day that this event was born. One year ago, resident educator Kevin Larson and members of his staff had the idea to bring young kids into Dakota Hall to play games and win Halloween candy. Tabor’s Dean of Student Life, Emir Ruiz Esparza, was there that night, and between Larson and Ruiz Esparza, the vision of an annual Halloween tradition on campus began to form.

Ruiz Esparza described the vision of this event in three parts: to serve the Hillsboro community, to provide an overwhelmingly positive atmosphere for young children and to foster interaction between Tabor students and the community.

These Tabor students who volunteered to become a character for the night were not paid to do so; they willingly gave up their time and effort to serve in this way. Ruiz

Esparza also noted that he did not recruit anyone to dress up as a villain, which helped provide this positive atmosphere for the children and even their parents.

“I wanted people to walk away and say, ‘Those Tabor students were awesome,’” Ruiz Esparza said.

Ruiz Esparza said he plans to host this event again next year, and he hopes this will inspire others on campus to create different events to involve the outside community.

This event, he added, was so successful because it included every one of Tabor’s core values--learning, involvement, service, Christ-centered and especially community. He emphasized that this event drew some community members to Tabor’s campus for the first time.

Ruiz Esparza said he hopes that this event will become a tradition and will foster the same positive atmosphere in years to come. villains concentrate on justifying mass killings and universal annihilation.

A Call to Harvest

In “A Call to Harvest” Shin-hee Chin uses perspective to make abstract work familiar. The piece is made of 112 squares, each its own magnificent work representing one year of Tabor College’s lifespan.

The assembled image is a wheat field ready for harvest, and Chin said it beckons to its audience. “’A Call’ has a little more weight than just ‘The Harvest,’” Chin said. She added that the plentiful harvest is the same one to which Jesus called laborers in Matthew 9:37.

Each piece of the harvest, each block, has five or more layers of color. Many are a completely different surface color than the initial layer.

The full project wasn’t planned from the start, but evolved over time.

“I went back to the blocks and alternated colors so that it looks like a quilt,” Chin said.

Chin also said that the quilt pattern was designed to honor the Mennonite women who first settled in Hillsboro and brought their quilts with them.

The quilt-like design and grain are meant to present a familiar yet evocative scene. The landscape is like any that could be found in central Kansas, and just as tied to Mennonites as their quilt patterns.

“I wanted to honor the Mennonites, also, who brought the seed (Turkey Red Wheat) from Russia,” Chin said. “The wheat seed they planted in Kansas changed the economy. There’s a contribution made by Mennonites to this society.”

The field represents more than heritage, though; it represents the future, too.

“Tabor College is the place that is educating young women and men to be a harvester in this society,” Chin said.

Future harvesters are just as called by the piece as the veterans of the field.

Though the piece is an image of a landscape, it does not appear in a landscape format. This is partially due to the intended placement of the piece in the Regier Atrium, but also because the very layout draws attention and demands action.

“When we see a landscape, we feel peaceful, relaxed and comforted,” Chin said. “Vertical format gives you alertness.”

The field calls for alert harvesters.

Saving the Yearbook One Day at a Time

As most know, Tabor has experienced painful budget cuts over the past year. Unfortunately, one of the cuts that had to be made was the yearbook.

Lily Arthur, the faculty advisor, said that people weren’t willing to spend as much as the production of the yearbook cost.

“It’s the history book of the college,” Arthur said. “It’s the one place you can go and find out about the year.”

Thankfully, even through a tough financial season, the budget crisis didn’t stop the yearbook.

A group of dedicated students along with Arthur have decided to volunteer, dedicating their time and energy to this project that many value from year to year.

As yearbook’s budget was cut, there will be a few changes this year.

The first change is that the yearbook will be an optional purchase for students online through Amazon, which will actually save students money as well.

The second major change will take some time to figure out logistics and implementations. The yearbook will merge with The Tabor View to create one group called the Student Publications Team.

With the two publications merging together, this creates an opportunity for the yearbook to gain a budget back again, which Arthur and yearbook editor Arian Moye are excited for.

“Eventually yearbook’s staff will be getting paid for their time,” said Moye.

Moye, just like Arthur, is very passionate about saving the yearbook.

“Yearbook is something you can look back on and see what you were like back in college,” she said.

Another idea that Arthur is hoping to eventually do with the yearbook is upload past editions on Tabor’s website for people to view. This would be a great way to preserve the history of Tabor, though there will still be a ways to go before this project will begin.

**Thanksgiving Opinon**

The holiday of Thanksgiving can be a rough time for people, especially those who don’t have family to celebrate it with. Thanksgiving is known as a time to be with family and simply the people you care about. Not everyone has family they can rely on, so unbiological family often become the chosen people to celebrate life with.

Toxic families can be damaging. Don’t be ashamed to get rid of toxic family members, especially ones that cause damage your mental and/or physical health.

There are no real solutions to the problem of the holiday that can bring loneliness to some who lack the stereotypical family unit. It’s an unfortunate reality, but there are ways to make it easier.

One way is to spend it with those who make you happy.

Have a friendsgiving! My dad, his wife and his close friends do this. It brings them joy, and it started their weekly game nights.

Making your own traditions should be more socially accepted. I honestly can’t stand how socially unacceptable it is to do things like cutting off toxic family members and creating unique traditions to counter the societal norms of today, so don’t be ashamed to do what is best for you. It will always be OK to do things non-traditionally. We as fellow humans should be sympathetic towards people wanting to throw off expectations around the holidays.

There are ways that those even with a traditional Thanksgiving celebration can help. Invite those you know without a close family to your Thanksgiving. Give them a place to go that will make them feel loved and invited. Give them positive holiday experiences to help outweigh the bad.

Whether these actions help change their perspective or not, it is a start, and that is what should matter most.

SPORTS UPDATES Cross Country

The Bluejays’ Cross Country team traveled Oct. 26 to Winfield, Kan., for the NAIA MidStates Classic.

For the women, junior Conagela Senior and senior Emily Kemling held the anchor for the team placing ninth of 19. Tabor witnessed a lot of teams they would later face in the KCAC. The team took it as a challenge, placing second among KCAC teams.

Senior took the meet as a personal improvement, bettering her time by 24 seconds, placing 16th with a time of 19:22.

Taking 17th was Tabor teammate Kemling, crossing the finish line in 19:23.

Garrett Kinsey placed 122nd, leading the men with a time of 29:14. The next Bluejay to finish the race was senior Riley Ballou-Lyngstad at 29:53.

Volleyball

Seniors Marissa Graf, Samantha Smith, Scout Washington and Monea Ortiz were recognized Nov. 2 at a senior night matchup versus Bethel College. In three close sets of this matchup, Tabor fell to Bethel.

But these seniors still had a chance to end their Tabor careers with a win on their home court versus York on Nov. 6. Finding an early lead and controlling the rest of the night, they closed their season with a sweet home victory.

The Lady Jays will look to pull off an upset as they enter the KCAC tournament Nov. 15-16.

“Our mentality is that we are ready to fight and leave everything we have out on the court,” Smith said.

Swimming

The men and women traveled to Freemont, Neb., to swim in the Dillon Family YMCA duo meet. The team fought hard but fell short to Midland University and Iowa Lakes Community College.

Senior Nicholas Bradley placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke, fourth in 200-yard butterfly and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke. He recorded a season best in his anchor position in the 200-yard freestyle, while senior Jacob Rudolph also hit a season best in the 50-yard freestyle.

For the women, senior Michal Parris placed second in both the 200-yard backstroke and the 400yard individual medley. Parris finished off her campaign fourth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Junior Murial Gibson found her personal best in the 500-yard freestyle, improving by 10 seconds.

Tennis

Tabor Tennis took on Baker University on Oct. 12 . The Bluejays suffered a tough loss to the Wildcats, 1-6.

The solo Tabor win came from men’s freshman Jean Paul Fort, 7-6, 9-7, and 6-0.

For the women, Tessa Isaac and Kayla Roth dropped two matches to Baker. The women finished the day losing 7-0.

The men closed out their fall competition facing William Jewel, dropping the match to the tough opponent, 0-7. Freshmen Pierce Klaassen and Fort put up a good fight winning three sets but losing the match 3-6.

The Bluejays went 0-2 in the preseason but showed grit as a young team. The regular season will begin for the Bluejays in Hastings, Neb. Feb. 1.

Soccer

Tabor’s men’s soccer team finished its season with a total of one win and 11 losses in the KCAC. The team had the same score at home and away, 1-7-1.

Men’s soccer played a full schedule. The team played 18 games, winning two, tying two and losing 16. The season was not free of injury, and several players redshirted a large part of the season.

Though Tabor’s soccer team struggled this season, a tough mindset is one echoed by many team members. Every season is lost unless it’s played, and Tabor will play on.

This year, the women’s soccer team reached KCAC quarterfinals, beating Ottawa University 1-0.

On Nov. 9, they played Oklahoma Wesleyan University, losing the match 0-3.

The team played a close season. This was the second match Tabor played against OSU, having lost by only one point in the first.

The women finished the season with six wins, 10 losses and three ties, with a record of 4-7-2 in the KCAC. The team, which only ceded 23 goals all game and scored 24 goals in total, played 14 games of 19 that were within one point of a tie or victory.

Football

As the Tabor football season quickly ends, the Bluejays look to cap off a winning season. After posting three straight wins against Ottawa, Bethel and the University of Saint Mary’s earlier in the season, Tabor dropped back-to-back close losses against Bethany and Avila.

The Bluejays hope to finish off the season strong when they play the Sterling College Warriors, ranked 23rd. Nov. 16 is the season’s final home game; kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.

Multiple Bluejays are among the leaders in the KCAC in different categories. Senior Josh Johnson is fourth in total rushing with 585 yards and seven touchdowns. Redshirt sophomore Trey McGee is third in conference with 2,165 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns.

Junior Derrick Harper and senior Justin Swims are third and fourth in receiving yards with 657 and 629 yards, respectively. Junior Josh Lauese and senior Elvin Turner are both in the top ten in sacks with five and 4.5 apiece.

Basketball

The women’s team kicked off their season with high expectations for the year after winning the conference regular season and conference tournament, as well as qualifying for the NAIA national tournament. The women currently enter the upcoming season ranked 18th in the nation. In their first season game versus D1 William Penn, the Bluejays dropped the game 45-69, with 15 of their points from junior Sammy Jo Peterson. The Lady Jays then won their next game 68-43 against the University of the Southwest. In the Tabor Classic, the Lady Jays lost two hard-fought games versus No. 3-ranked College of the Ozarks and Midland University.

The women found another win in their conference opener Nov. 13, blowing the University of Saint Mary’s away with a final score of 72-32. Next will be a battle at McPherson College Nov. 16.

The women will later return to the Tabor College campus Nov. 20 to play Kansas Wesleyan.

The men’s basketball team looks to improve from last year’s campaign where they finished 7-23 for the year and 5-19 in conference play.

The Bluejays started on a high note by winning two of their three games early in the season.

The wins began against Webber International University 90-81 with 45 points from senior Tyler Zinn. The men won their second game against Haskell Indian Nations University, 70-60.

Tabor fell to College of the Ozarks in the Tabor Classic 72-84. Zinn once again led the Bluejays with 23 points along with junior Montel Stewart adding 12 points.

The Bluejays fell in their conference game Nov. 13 to the University of Saint Mary’s 69-81.

After an exhibition game against Emporia State Nov. 14, the Bluejays’ next home game will be Nov. 20 against Kansas Wesleyan.

Tabor Students Serve Hillsboro Community Churches

by Johannah Hastings As Tabor students, we are encouraged to strive for the values of involvement, community and service.

Hillsboro is home to a variety of churches. Many Tabor students have probably even visited some of them through Tabor Sundays earlier this semester. Some students have taken a step further than simply attending Sunday mornings, and they have found plenty of ways to serve their community churches.

Senior Jessica Thorpe, who attends Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, is involved in multiple ways at Ebenfeld.

She has attended here ever since her freshman year at Tabor.

“I help teach Sunday school for kids in grades one through four, and that is a big task at times,” Thorpe said.

She has really been drawn to teaching kids to learn and answer honestly in their classes, not just provide the typical Sunday school answers. Thorpe said wants to see the kids have take-aways that are valuable to them.

Along with a heart for kids, she carries a strong passion for worship, and she enjoys serving the Ebenfeld congregation through the worship team.

Church worship is a place of involvement for other Tabor students, including senior Camden Cox. Cox attends Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church, which he was led to through Tabor’s own Contemporary Christian Music program. David Martens, worship leader at Parkview, really encouraged Cox to attend Parkview on Sunday mornings.

“Being part of all the experiences that both Tabor and Parkview had to offer me with this involvement in worship has led me to believe that God was really calling me to do something with all the musical gifts and talents he has put into my life,” Cox said.

His involvement ranges from playing instruments to singing to helping stream services so that residents at Parkside Homes, a residential facility for seniors citizens, can view from home. This large contribution to the church gives Cox a new perspective on his placement.

“It’s not my own thing now; it’s God’s, and that feels much more satisfying,” he said.

Cox encourages especially Tabor students to go where God needs them most.

Another church in the Hillsboro community is Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church.

Anna Carpenter ended up at Hillsboro M.B. because of its close distance to campus, as she lacks a car. She found a way to invest in the congregation as the children’s ministry intern.

“If you just go for the service and leave, you just don’t get as much from it,” Carpenter said.

She helps with whatever the children’s ministry pastor needs. This is a lot of background work, but Carpenter also gets to help with ages 3 to 5 in children’s church, which she said is her favorite.

Tabor provides a glimpse of opportunities for even greater involvement in the body of Christ, if only students open their eyes beyond the boundaries of campus.

‘Sharing Blessing Bags’

by Kerensa Holler This year, November brings the Uplift and Men’s Underground ministries together to bless the Hillsboro community through service.

The two teams are combining to make what they call “blessing bags.”

The idea is to give back to those who need a little help.

Through this project, they hope to distribute the bags to the homeless via local churches, and later, they want to face the poverty of the homeless on the streets of Wichita, distributing blessings through these bags outside of the immediate community.

Shara Tanner, one of the four Uplift ministry leaders, gave her fellow leader Kara Schlotthauer credit for this idea, stating that it was her original drive and passion that sparked the project. Uplift knew that the project was too big for them

to tackle alone, so they reached out to Men’s Underground for partnership, and Underground gladly accepted.

“It is really exciting to see so many ministries on campus come up and support us,” Tanner said.

They plan to gather some essentials, but focusing on other small luxuries, like fudge and gift cards for restaurants, to give the recipients a gift of feeling their true worth. The ministries hope that the bags can encourage them to see that they aren’t alone, and that they are deeply cared for.

“Hopefully even some of the students that participate get a sense of calling through this project,” said Josh Kliewer, a leader of Men’s Underground.

The bags will be packed and prayed over Nov. 19 beginning at 8 p.m. by any students interested.

Election Day

by Terran Hoyt The Democratic primary debates have been a roller coaster, filled with incredibly diverse candidates and the most candidates on stage in, well… ever. But as we approach the next debate on Nov. 20, the field seems to be settling into a state of equilibrium with Joe Biden narrowly leading the polls. With such a tight field, the Democratic candidates are working to target who they believe has the power to decide who will win the race— college students.

According to RocktheVote.org, 40 percent of the electorate in 2020 will be a ‘Gen Z’ or a ‘Millennial.’ People ages 18 to 29 are voting at a higher rate than ever, and their voice is being heard. Tara Nelson, a sophomore at Tabor, says that even though she is a Republican, she follows the Democratic debate through Twitter, cautiously choosing her sources.

“I vote because I think it’s important that people get a say in who runs our country,” Nelson said.

Other students are more skeptical about voting. Raymond Perrault, a junior at Tabor, says that he has followed the debates to an extent because of his Public Relations class, but he doesn’t vote.

“I don’t vote because the Electoral College elects the president,” said Perrault. “Our votes mean little to nothing when choosing the president.

Though Gen Z has the power to sway a vote, it is all dependent on whether or not they show up at the polls.

Preston Loewen, another junior at Tabor, encourages voting.

“I vote because I want to exercise my right as an American citizen.”

Christianity in Sports

by Terran Hoyt Flash back. It’s 2009. You’re getting ready to watch the National Championship game between Florida and Oklahoma. It’s a face-off between Heisman quarterbacks Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford. The world was ready for an epic offensive show between two great football teams. What the world wasn’t ready for was a Bible verse to pop up on their big-screen TVs. John 3:16 was written on Tebow’s eye black, generating 90 million Google searches in a 24 hours. Feathers were ruffled to say the least, even leading to an NCAA rule that banned messages on eye paint— later dubbed the “Tebow Rule.”

Flash forward. It’s 2019. New Orleans Saints NFL linebacker DeMario Davis is fined for sporting a “Man of God” headband in a late-September matchup versus the Seattle Seahawks. Davis won the appeal and has since donated more than $30,000 to St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, from “Man of God” headband sales.

While society has seemingly created a binding place in sports for athletes to express their Christianity, Tabor is counter-cultural. Tying faith into sports is not only encouraged, but expected. Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Associate Athletic Director Shawn Reed attested to the culture Tabor has created that gives space for Christianity in sports.

“Tabor is very intentional in demanding that our coaches

implement faith into our teams,” said Reed. “Coaches are required to put together a plan that includes devotions, prayer, service and witness.”

Freedom of religion is protected under the First Amendment, which states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Reed acknowledged that freedom of religion includes religions other than Christianity, but he said he hopes that through Tabor’s process of recruitment, students adhere to Tabor’s mission and lifestyle.

“My personal opinion is that right now, Christianity is under attack and that maybe other religions are not as under attack, “Reed said. “I just want to see an equal opportunity and platform for all religions.”

Ensuring that athletes and coaches are allowed to use their sport as a platform to share their faith is a priority from step one.

“An important part of the hiring process at Tabor is to find people that are Christians and that want to minister through their sport,” said Reed.

Student-athletes at Tabor can feel confident that their platform to share their faith is not only protected, but spotlighted by Tabor.

“God calls us as Christians to live out our faith in every sphere of life, including sports.”

Professor Profiles: Getting to Know the New Science Faculty

by Jarod Cooper The 2019 school year saw new faculty members arrive on Tabor’s campus. Two science professors and one math professor left at the completion of the previous spring semester. The science and math departments were in significant need of new professors to fill the gaps, and these new faculty members are already making an impact even in their first semester here at Tabor.

Timothy Click Ph.D. — Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry JC: What are some of your previous teaching experiences?

TC: For the past six years, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, where I was researching computer-based chemistry and experimental drug design.

JC: What is your favorite thing about Tabor, and is there anything that has surprised you?

TC: I really enjoy the students on campus and their willingness to understand chemistry topics. Something that surprised me was having to get reacclimated to living in a small town like Hillsboro, coming from a large city in Taiwan.

JC: Is there anything that you look forward to doing here on campus?

TC: I would like to improve on my teaching abilities since this is my first teaching opportunity since being a teaching assistant in college. I would also like to be a better servant to the students and the community around the campus.

Zhihui Nie Ph.D. — Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics JC: What are some of your previous teaching experiences?

ZN: I was a graduate assistant at Tianjin University in Tianjin, China, and I was also an instructor/teaching assistant at Wichita State.

JC: What is your favorite thing about Tabor, and is there anything that has surprised you?

ZN: I like the small town and how everything is close together and also how the students come in wanting to learn the topics. I was surprised about how many of the students were athletes, and I like the food in the Dining Hall.

JC: Is there anything that you look forward to doing here on campus?

ZN: I would like to help the academics of the students so they understand and master mathematics skills. I would also like to continue to do research and hopefully publish some papers.

Stanley Ens — Visiting Professor of Biology JC: What are some of your previous teaching experiences?

SE: I was a teacher/ professor for the past 28 years in the Wichita Public School system and at Wichita State University. During that time, I taught everything from anatomy to robotics.

JC: What is your favorite thing about Tabor, and is there anything that has surprised you?

SE: Being able to be open about teaching the faith of God in class and to work with the students and staff is my favorite. I was surprised when I was personally asked

by Dr. Frank Johnson and President Jules Glanzer to come and join the staff here at Tabor.

JC: Is there anything that you look forward to doing here on campus?

SE: I look forward to helping to enhance the medical program and supporting the endeavors of the college and the students.

New Majors and Major Changes at Tabor

“We want students to be prepared for the real world.

Our programs are probably the most relevant they have ever been,” said Dr. Frank Johnson, Tabor’s executive vice president of academics and compliance.

Johnson shared that his department has been working for the last year on both adding new majors as well as trimming down the size of programs. The new majors being offered are Bio-Medical, Public Health, Adaptive Ministry Leadership and Sports Informations Director.

In addition to adding majors, Johnson said that most majors have been reconstructed to have a maximum of 42 hours.

“That’s how we can do this double-major concept for the price of one,” he said.

Tabor is also looking to expand its online courses by offering both the new Ministry and the Criminal Justice programs entirely online.

“We are folding in new things with career prep,’’ Johnson said, adding that it will take a few years to get programmed and fully developed. Per his example, Education majors will gain more interview prep before they are sent into the field.

Tabor wants to focus on helping students succeed after their time here.

“We want students to find a career through their calling,” Johnson said. “We want students to be prepared for the real world. Our programs are probably the most relevant they have ever been.”

The students of Tabor should look to a better future after they graduate that’s built by the current advancements.

“We mean with absolute sincerity, the stuff that’s being said, this promise in advantage,” Johnson said. “That’s not just hype or spin.”

‘Doctor Sleep’ Movie Review

by Kerensa Holler When I first saw the trailer for “Doctor Sleep,” I was stoked. Stephen King is hands down one of my favorite authors, and one of his most famous stories, “The Shining,” is a wonderful movie.

When I saw that “Doctor Sleep” had been crafted into a movie that released Nov. 8, I jumped at the opportunity to go see it. I am so glad I did.

“Doctor Sleep” is the direct sequel to “The Shining.” It continues the storyline of the events after “The Shining,” and Dan Torrance is running from the supernatural ability he has had as a child, which he calls “the shining.”

“Doctor Sleep” shows Danny Torrance and an introduced character named Abra, both of whom carry “the shining” ability.

Together, they combat the True Knot, a cult whose goal is to

capture kids with the ability that Danny and Abra have so that the cult members can stay youthfully immortal.

The True Knot’s rituals seemed a bit boring and forced as menacing; the terrifying factors of “The Shining” don’t present themselves in the same jolting way as before.

I really appreciated the use of Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to “The Shining”; particularly the final climax of the movie was extremely well done.

I also loved the casting for Dan Torrance, the young boy played by Roger Dale Floyd, while Ewan McGregor took the role of adult Danny. The movie chose not to perfectly stick to its source material, which I count against the directors and the movie’s rating. **Restoring Discipleship**

The Western church is declining. A younger generation that is consumed by instant gratification and a desire for something greater has been left feeling empty, some even when they reach out to their local churches.

Unfulfillment has led millions of young people to depression and even suicide. This all comes from a lack of understanding and a loss of hope in this younger generation.

To guide young men and women out of a helpless cycle of unfulfillment, we first need to restore the true meaning of discipleship within the Western church. Our definition of discipleship has been corrupted, with many thinking that mere knowledge about Jesus is what is most important.

But teaching obedience and servanthood is what true and genuine discipleship looks like.

Forcing knowledge upon a younger generation will only hurt their relationship with the church, and ultimately, with the One we follow. I’ve seen many young students rubbed in the wrong direction because of this misguided focus.

As the body of Christ, we should be building up unity within the church. Jesus humbled himself to the position of a slave, displaying servanthood in the rawest form. Restoring this modeled image of humility will impact the multitudes, leading to energized, Spirit-led believers.

The Western church has also lost sight of the mission at hand: to go forth and make disciples of all nations. The Great Commission has lost its value. We need to be asking

ourselves if each of the things we teach and organize are fulfilling this final command Jesus gave in Matthew 28.

Are the ways we’re trying to reach the lost driven by the “need” for strict programming, or are we touching lives through opportunities in simple everyday interactions? Is church meant to be experienced and constrained inside four walls, or is it to be lived out by its members in even the darkest areas of the world?

I have more often seen the world influencing the body of Christ than the body of Christ influencing the world. I’m not saying that the church has intention of becoming programoriented, but the church is creating a model for the world to see, and it needs to be the right picture.

The current model that the church has created has been harmful to many people’s experiences. Going back to the need for more life to life interactions, the church has become a place for entertainment instead of a place for authentic transformation.

People go to listen to the speaker or for the good worship team instead of for growth and transformation. The church should be a sending point, or a locker room, to equip then send out disciples who make disciples.

As the body of Christ, we should be restoring the true definition of discipleship within a complacent Western church. Instead of centralizing the body of Christ, we need to disperse, sending out disciples ready to fulfill our mission.

Tabor Cheer Changes

Bluejay cheerleaders began the year without an official coach and was student-led by junior Alyssa Matney. She said she is very thankful and honored to have taken this opportunity. After cheering at two home games, Matney said she feels the cheerleaders have done very well and is pleased with their work.

With a team of only 10 women, they are focusing on laying a foundation for years to come, building an environment where everyone can become a leader.

This year’s foundation is the acronym F.A.I.T.H--Faith in him, Faith in us, Faith in me; Academic integrity and Accountability; Inspire others for greatness; Train like

champions; and Humility. This foundational acronym embodies all the goals and vision of the team.

Matney’s hopes for the team going forward are that the members of the team not only grow closer together, but also as individuals; her main goal is to create a positive and healthy environment for everyone to grow in Christ.

Fans can look forward to the next game that will feature a unique team introduction, giveaways and new skills to present. To support the Bluejay cheerleaders, come out to senior day at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 16 against the Sterling College Knights.

Finals Advice: To the Freshmen from the Upperclassmen

As the fall semester is coming to an end, finals are quickly approaching for the students of Tabor College.

Many of the students have experienced finals week before; however, freshmen have yet to experience the full extent of finals. To help the fresh faces on campus, we’ve gathered some tips and advice from seasoned students. These students have endured plenty of finals and have suggestions for you to make it through finals week unscathed.

“Study in cycles! Rotate which class you’re studying for every 45 minutes or so with a 10-15-minute snack break in between sessions. This will help keep your brain fresh.”

“ACTUALLY STUDY!!! ...and don’t stay up ‘til 4a.m. studying because you probably won’t retain all of the things you have studied.”
