These images were taken as part of a Tabor class on Missions during Interterm trips to India. They present people of India at their everyday work, doing tasks that are often quite different than what we are used to in our culture. The people in these scenes are sometimes straining, sometimes focused, and occasionally bored, but in each case I was struck by a sense of the dignity of the workers, even those who were very poor.

1. I am a Management and Marketing major.

2. I am applying for jobs on the East Coast right now. I’m hoping to work in a marketing department for a large company in New York City.

3. College is what you make of it. If you’re having a bad time in college, it means that you just haven’t found fun yet. In a small town on a small campus you need to look for fun instead of just having it given to you like in the big cities.

4. The late-night runs with my friends going to Hardee’s are some of the best times with my friends. Getting a text at like two in the morning and getting in the car for a late-night run to Hardee’s led to some great conversations.

1. Majoring in English, minoring in Communications.

2. My main goal is to blow up and act like I don’t know nobody.

3. Join clubs even if you aren’t the most outgoing person. It can open doors to new friendships or opportunities.

2. I will be working for a financial company in Wichita and I plan to get an MBA after a year of work experience.

3. I would tell underclassmen to get involved. Do not wait for good things to come your way. I know it is overwhelming sometimes, but with some effort and a couple of late nights, you can do it.

4. March 31, 2018. I was at a Tabor Softball game against Bethel. It was the tenth inning and we were down 4-5 with two outs and a player on third base. Then, Madison Byrd hit a two-run walk-off! It was my birthday and I got to keep the ball after the game as well!

Ariana Landeros

1. I will be graduating with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and Sports Management, as well as a minor in Psychology.

2. My plan for the future is to get a job at a marketing firm.

3. Stay focused and push through. One day it will all pay off - just keep working.

4. My favorite memory at Tabor is going to the opening round of the World Series.

Tabor Brings Back “Late Night”

Back by popular demand, the Student Activities Board has brought back Late Night for hungry students.

The cafeteria is open from 9:30-10:30 p.m. serving snacks to all students only on advertised Wednesday nights. Late Night often features a variety of options such as cookies, french fries, chips and drinks.

Opera to Perform in April

Rap, hip-hop and country. Many people have a general understanding of these genres and the different characteristics that uniquely define them, but many people do not understand what opera is and what makes it unique.

The opera program at Tabor started out with just a few students but has been growing over the last few years.

“When it started, there were just a few students singing maybe duets or solos that come from operas,” said Stephenson, assistant professor of Music and director of Vocal Studies and Opera. “They didn’t have costumes or anything.”

The opera program provides an opportunity for students to explore opera and learn more about its unique qualities.

Opera can be thought of as a genre similar to musical theater, except with classical music, said Stephenson.

“It’s a sung drama using classical music,” Stephenson said.

“That’s how I would really define it.”

Stephenson’s interest in opera and music inspired her to pursue a career in the field, leading her to receive masters degrees in choral conducting and singing as well as a doctorate in music.

Stephenson started the opera program at Tabor in the spring of 2016.

Opera students performed a production of “Captain Lovelock” in the spring of 2017. It was a one-act opera, lasting around 25 minutes.

A few different productions have been performed since then, including “Patience” and “Hansel and Gretel.”

The opera students are currently preparing for the spring production of “La Favola d’Orfeo,” an Italian opera that will take place April 16.

Stephenson said she plans for someone to read a synopsis before each act, informing the audience of the events about to take place.

“When I go to an opera, if I don’t know what’s happening, it’s boring,” said Stephenson. “You kind of want to know what’s going on.”

Operas are not typically performed in English, and words are often repeated many times, so it is not necessary for the audience to understand every word that is sung.

Stephenson said she hopes to expand Tabor’s opera program to involve many different departments on campus, as opera ties in with many realms including history, English, science and communication.

“I think opera is an awesome opportunity… to get lots of departments on campus to coordinate,” said Stephenson.

Social Justice Club Hosting Charity Brunch

The Social Justice Club will host a charity brunch during April to raise money for clean water.

SJC has set a goal to raise $500, enough to buy two cleanwater trucks for two different communities around the world. It plans on donating to Save the Children — a charity that aims to inspire and help children who lack necessary essentials to survive.

For $250, the charity provides a large tanker truck full of clean water for a village.

President Danielle Armstrong and the rest of SJC have been working this semester to combat a variety of different social injustices. Armstrong said this latest project will bring awareness to the need for clean water globally.

“The goal of this project is to raise awareness about the lack of access to clean water and raise money to help communities that are in need of clean water,” Armstrong said. “This water would be able to sustain both communities in their time of need.”

While an exact date and location have not been set, the club plans to hold the event sometime in April. Armstrong said there will be “yummy” food, and all proceeds will go to the clean-water trucks.

Putting the event together is still a work in progress and has not been easy to plan so far.

“The biggest challenges have been finding a location and being able to figure out the best foods to make,” Armstrong said.

According to the United Nations, 2.1 billion people in the world lack access to clean water. Additionally, over half the population lacks safely managed sanitation services.

The need to bring clean water to countries is a prominent issue in the world today. Armstrong said if you are interested in helping out, contact her at daniellearmstrong@tabor.edu.

“I would encourage them to email me and see where they can be most helpful either planning, executing or raising awareness,” Armstrong said.

Tabor Presents “Dark Road”: A Look Into a Women’s Concentration Camp

With Tabor’s light-hearted production of “The Jungle Book” over and done with, a new play is being prepared by a small group of student directors. Titled “Dark Road,” this new production follows the story of Greta, a young girl in Nazi Germany, who joins a women’s concentration camp as a guard in order to provide for her family. From there, she witnesses the horrors of the Third Reich. This is a departure from the usual Tabor theatrical productions as it deals with mature themes that are inevitable when considering the subject matter. The protagonist’s immersion into the depravity that came with the rise of Third Reich is the center of the story, so the drama is intended for mature audiences.

When asked why this particular play was chosen, co-director Anna Fruechting said that she and her fellow directors,

Madie Hill and Megan Staats, found the script to be “hard-hitting” and emotionally powerful. This sentiment is shared by the actors as well.

“What’s special about this kind of play is that it’s not what you typically see in our theater program,” said cast member Dylan Wiens. “It’s far more serious. While everything we normally do has a happy ending, this is different. It shows a society where evil is commonplace. The play shows the audience a scenario when evil is someone’s nine-to-five.”

This will be the latest production from the new student director’s program, which is graciously funded by the Tabor Theater Department. The show debuts April 26 in the Black Box Theater in the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts.

Drevion Cooper

Tabor’s own Drevion Cooper recently achieved an outstanding accomplishment. The Tabor senior has devoted the past four years to the football team and now has the privilege of being called a professional athlete.

This did not happen overnight for Cooper. Cooper played football in high school in Cold Spring, Texas, where he was very successful. As his Tabor career ended, he hired an agent and has attended scouting events including a college bowl football game and a Pro Day at Liberty University in Virginia. He plans to target clubs within the Canadian Football League and the American Association of Football, but would undoubtedly treasure an opportunity to play in the NFL if offered. Needless to say, it has taken years of training, practicing and competing in football camps, showcases and games in order to reach this accomplishment.

While playing at Tabor, Cooper made a name for himself in the NAIA. This was largely due to his excellence as a running back, rushing for 1,474 yards over 10 games, which ranked him second in the nation and earned him a spot on the NAIA’s All-American second team. He was also responsible for 3,474 all-purpose yards and 30 touchdowns through his four years at Tabor.

Being at Tabor has deepened Cooper’s character, his personal relationship with God, and his ability to be more of a vocal leader both on and off the field. Tabor’s chapels have challenged him in his faith, as has head coach Mike Gardner,

who recruited him and was an example of what an active relationship with Jesus Christ looked like. It is obvious that Drevion has had a large impact on Tabor’s football program, but it has also had a large impact on him.

Cooper has several goals in mind when thinks about playing professional football. Not only does he hope to sign with a club and play professionally, but he is also thinking past the gridiron. Cooper hopes to one day start some sort of recreation center in his Texas hometown. He believes this would give young kids who might not have the talent or means to play competitively a chance to learn skills in football and other sports. This recreation center would also allow him to pass on his abilities and experiences directly to the next generation.

Cooper is thankful to God for giving him an opportunity to continue his football career at Tabor and beyond and for the special ability that God has given him.

SPORTS UPDATES Tennis

The tennis team held its home opener March 23. Sterling College traveled to Hillsboro to defeat the Bluejays, 7-2.

Despite that day’s loss, the men still had small victories. Tabor’s doubles team, Angel Miguel and Gallagher Martin-Chavez, defeated the Warriors in the first doubles match of the day.

The Jays again won the third match of doubles, breaking the doubles tie for the day.

The last win of the day for the men’s team came from Miguel in singles. He won two sets, 6-1 and 6-1. The loss against Sterling puts the Bluejays at 0-5 in the season.

The women’s team put up a fight against the Warriors, eventually losing on the day 6-3.

Senior Naima Mexsen started off with a win in singles, 6-4, in both the first and second sets. Sophomore Olivia Brubacher was able to grab another win in three sets, winning the first set 6-4, losing the second set 6-3, and coming out on top in the third, 6-2.

Mexsen and Brubacher stole one last victory from the Warriors in doubles, 8-3. The team’s loss would put them at 2-3 in the young season.

Softball

The Bluejays got off to a slow start on the season after 24 of their games were postponed or canceled due to erratic spring weather conditions.

The softball team finally had the home-field advantage on March 22 where they swept the Sterling Warriors 1-0 and 12-6.

The Bluejays put the first and only run on the board of Game 2 in the first inning when third-base Alicia Lopez knocked in pitcher Madison Byrd.

The rest of the game was up to Byrd to shut down the Warriors, which was no problem. Byrd pitched all seven innings, allowing zero runs and striking out 13 in her outing.

The team went on to win Game 2 by six, scoring 12 runs on 12 hits.

The Jays traveled to Friends University on March 26, where they split the day 1-1.

The team won the first game 6-4, losing the following one 9-8.

The Lady Jays are 6-10 in their season and 3-3 in the KCAC, placing them eighth in conference.

Baseball

The Tabor College baseball team recently pulled off a three-game sweep against Southwestern on March 21-22.

The Bluejays followed that up with a thrilling 10-6 win over Bethany College on March 25. In the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at six, senior Will Clark hit a walk-off grand slam to give Tabor its 15th KCAC win of the season. The Bluejays are a game back of Oklahoma Wesleyan for first place in the conference.

Tabor still has conference series with Ottawa, Sterling, McPherson, Friends and St. Mary this season.

Golf

The Tabor Bluejay men’s golf team participated in the KCAC Championships hosted by Crestview Country Club in Wichita, Kansas. The Bluejays placed ninth out of nine teams at the KCAC Championships. The Bluejays golf team also hosted the Tabor College Spring Invitational on March 25th and 26th at Tallgrass Country Club in Wichita, Kansas. The Jays placed fifth out five teams in the invitational.

Track

Three members of the Tabor Bluejay track team participated in the NAIA Track & Field Championships. The events were held Feb. 28 through March 2 by South Dakota State University. The lone male track athlete, Parker Findley, participated in the 60m hurdles and finished with a time of 8:30 and placed ninth overall in the competition.

Freshmen Ajanique Wells and Taylor Quiring were the female track athletes from Tabor who participated in high jump and triple jump, respectively. Wells placed 25th out of the 31 athletes with a jump of 5’ 1.75.” Quiring jumped a length of 35’ 3.75” and placed 32nd out of 37 athletes in the contest.

Spring Cleaning: How to Keep Your Dorm Room Organized Staying organized in college can be tricky. With small rooms, a roommate and the 80 pairs of shoes shoved under your bed, it may seem impossible to stay organized, but spring is finally here (kinda), and it’s time for spring cleaning!

Spring cleaning is a great time to go through the areas in your room you may overlook on an everyday basis. Knowing where to start is intimidating, but here’s a list that may help you tackle the task.

Once you’re done spring cleaning, you’ll be glad you took on the challenge. It gives a sense of renewal, and you’ll once again feel proud of your room.

How to Stay Motivated at the End of the Year As finals approach and the end of the year quickly becomes a reality, it can be hard to find motivation to keep pushing yourself in school. Despite what anyone says, we can all agree that senioritis is a real thing, and sometimes even freshmen catch the procrastination fever.

Overcoming these urges and finishing the school year strong is not easy, but hopefully these tips can revive any motivation you have left and push you to do your best until the amazing day of graduation!

Start using your planner again!

Writing in your planner may seem tedious and pointless, but it’s such an easy task that can make all the difference when everything seems to be spinning out of control.

Taking five minutes out of the day to organize your assignments and appointments might be the only way you remember about your 7:30 a.m. meeting with a professor or your chapter-ten homework that’s due at 11:59 Sunday evening.

Ask for help/work with a partner.

Working with a partner is a great way to motivate anyone to start working and to stay on track. Having someone hold you accountable for your work can almost guarantee the positive result you were hoping for.

Grab a friend, partner or family member and ask them for help. I’m sure you’re not the only one this time of year who needs help staying motivated!

Make goals for yourself.

If another day, week or month passes and you cannot find the motivation to get your work done, try setting a goal for yourself and giving yourself a reward when you accomplish that goal.

Movie Review: “Captain Marvel”

by David WIens With the initial controversy surrounding the release of “Captain Marvel” mostly over, it’s about time to answer the question: is “Captain Marvel” worth your time? The short answer: probably not.

It’s not a terrible movie by any means. In fact, it’s a perfectly serviceable superhero film in the same vein as every Marvel movie that has recently released. But that’s its precise problem: this film is a filler movie for the array of sequels that feature Captain Marvel.

Unfortunately, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is one of the most boring characters to ever grace the silver screen. In almost every scene, she broods with unwarranted angst while other actors attempt to convey emotion. This results in unintended

comedic moments when characters are talking passionately about dramatic events, only for the camera to swivel to the main heroine’s deadpan facial expression.

The unintentional comedy doesn’t stop there. Every once in a while, the protagonist will throw out a quip after an action sequence. The way some of these lines are delivered had the audience laughing. In these moments, “Captain Marvel” steers dangerously close to the so-bad-it’s-good movie.

Even if you enjoy laughing at a bad movie, I can’t recommend this one in good conscience. Between the awful acting and the cringe-inducing one-liners is a dull plot about a clash between two alien races that is poorly paced, generic and soulless.

Reinventing the Core Academic Curriculum

by Kara Schlotthauer Academic excellence is a foundational principle on which Tabor College was built. For many years, Tabor has adhered to a steady, relatively monotonous method of offering higher education. However, this upcoming year, the academic catalog is undergoing extensive revisions.

The hope for a series of changes in the core curriculum was initiated by Dr. Frank Johnson, executive vice president for Academics and Compliance.

Johnson said the ball began rolling when he first shared his desire for the faculty to look at the core curriculum.

“I wrote a memo to the faculty… challenging them to basically completely reengineer what it is we’re offering,” Johnson said.

Two weeks later, the Tabor Board of Directors held a meeting at which they determined that Tabor’s fiscal reality would prompt quicker action than planned.

When given the abrupt charge from the board, Johnson changed his original plan of forming an elect task force and instead opened the group to all faculty. Nearly every faculty member accepted the opportunity, according to Johnson.

Most faculty had initial concerns toward the idea of major changes.

“Faculty asked questions,” he said. “They seem like they’re being critical, but they’re being critical in the positive use of that word. They’re valuing the idea and they’re engaging.”

After an initial meeting of the task force, Johnson declared a one-month pause on the matter for members to talk and brainstorm possible revisions among their departments.

The proposition was a restructuring of academic affairs including the following: •

Integrating the Wichita campus into the Hillsboro campus and reorganizing into three schools within Tabor College: the schools of Liberal Arts Studies, Graduate Studies and Professional Studies.

Reconfiguring all majors to fit within a maximum of 40 credit hours as well as reducing the required graduation credit hours from 124 to 120, making a bachelor’s degree more achievable for all students in three years.

Lightening of faculty load from 25-28 hours to 24 per semester, allowing extra hours for collaboration with

students on special research projects.

Redesigning TC 101 into a three-hour course that not only introduces new students to life at Tabor, but also provides instruction on wellness, personal finance and critical thinking.

Replacing the five options of RS 200-level Tabor Distinctive courses with six options of RS 300-level vocational courses aligning with majors, which will be offered primarily during Interterm.

Replacing the Christian Ministry major with an Adaptive Ministry Leadership major of 36 credit hours.

Registering for class schedules by semester as opposed to the full year to help increase student retention rate.

The accelerated process of determining these alterations, which are scheduled to be implemented in the fall of 2019, required an immense amount of collaboration and problem solving in a short period of time.

Beginning in December, the faculty convened for seven meetings to work through the curriculum over the span of seven weeks.

“These were multi-hour meetings at which we did all of this work,” Johnson said. “(The faculty) just stepped up. This was at least two years’ work that we did in seven weeks.”

Every revision was intentional and directed to benefit the student academic experience, seeking to leave room for more individualized opportunity.

“We built this with the student in mind,” Johnson said.

“We are going to empower students to have more options, to take greater ownership of their learning.”

As with any significant change, however, the transition will be difficult for both faculty and students.

“Next year will be the hardest,” Johnson said. “Students have to not panic. We’re working hard to give as much time for advising and meeting with students as possible.”

The 2019-2020 academic catalog is scheduled to be released in April.

The recasting of vision for Tabor College’s academic success is building a fiscal foundational future for the generations of the institution to come - an intentional focus of those leading the charge of change.

“I’m so thankful to the students at Tabor, and we need all of them to come back,” Johnson said. “God is at work. Our programs are stronger as a result of this work, which means a better chance of employment for our students.”

**It’s About Time For an Honest Election**

In the past few decades, political elections have been nothing short of a theatrical display. Candidates in various elections all around the country make it their mission to do whatever it takes to ensure their potential election. Just three short years ago, America witnessed one of the most controversial presidential elections this country had ever seen. Scandals, controversial dialogue, and even all-out bans were used as bait to reel in as much support possible, and it’s begun to open the eyes of future voters. The clear agenda-based form of politics has been shoved into the limelight, causing people to question the real motives of the candidates and those that fund their campaigns.

With the immense surge of news outlets entering the world of social media, the playing field is even more biased than in past elections. For example, Andrew Yang, an emerging Democrat running in the 2020 Presidential Election, has made it his mission to ensure American citizens stability in the wake of the rise in technology. While this is a very real

possibility in the future, left-leaning news outlets have failed to promote Yang’s campaign, as it doesn’t fit their agenda of social “issues” that are constantly put on display. With lack of support from his own side, Yang has had to resort to a variety of podcasts, radio shows, and even right-wing news outlets such as Fox to promote his own campaign.

There’s blame to be put on both sides. While it might be a wild hunch, both the Democratic and Republican parties appear to already have their candidates based on their own agendas. Though this has been going on for centuries, it doesn’t mean it’s right. With the upcoming Presidential Election just around the corner, voters deserve an honest, unbiased election based on principles and vision, not pandering to certain groups of people to ensure votes. Will that happen? Probably not.

Budget Reduction Impact on Students

Change hurts. When change occurs, something is lost, and a sore spot is left for those who bridge the gap between the past and the future.

Over the past few weeks, the Tabor College community has felt the force of difficult but necessary decisions because of financial strain.

At their Feb. 22-23 meeting, the Tabor College Board of Directors decided upon a series of changes to help restore the budget to a stable condition.

In the past two years, the college’s budget has experienced a depletion of revenue and an increase of expenses, calling for a reorganization of finances to restore the balance.

More detailed information regarding the budget decisions can be found on tabor.edu.

Many of the changes decided on by the board directly affect the student body, most notably the release of faculty and other employees.

Upon hearing the news that reductions were being made, students quickly spoke up.

A number of the faculty who were let go had prominent places in students’ lives, and the initial response from students under their instruction was overwhelmingly negative.

“The emotions from the very beginning were confusion, stress, anger and the process of grief,” said junior Camden Cox, a member of Tabor’s Concert Choir, about Dr. Bradley Vogel’s position being terminated.

Students wrestled through those stages of grief, blowing through the first stage of denial and lingering on the second stage of anger.

As the brunt of the news settled the first week, more questions for the decision-makers arose.

Although some answers trickled down to the students’ ears, the reasons still felt vague from sophomore education major Olivia Brubacher’s perspective.

“Whenever anyone prodded for answers or explanations, they seemed to be pushed away or given standard answers that mostly beat around the bush without answering anything,” Brubacher said.

Members of the choir, who were the first students to feel the effects of the budget cuts on Feb. 26, initially felt the

same, Cox said, but administration held a meeting to answer questions solely for the group.

“For them to arrange a meeting with the choir and follow through with that, that means great things to me,” Cox said.

“It means they’re willing to step down to our level and be vulnerable. They can’t answer everything, but they did everything they could to help it make sense to us.”

This straight and forward approach to communication was later applied to the rest of the student body at a student town hall meeting held March 4.

Even with some unknowns explained at the meeting, the sadness and remnants of anger remained.

Unrest between programs that were prominently wounded and those that were only bruised permeated the campus.

“For me specifically, I don’t feel like adequate communication has been given to explain why such drastic measures were taken in only a few departments,” said Brubacher, referencing the Education Department’s loss of Joanne Loewen.

“I’ve heard rumors and some other people’s opinions, but no direct answers as to why certain people kept their jobs and others didn’t.”

For confidentiality reasons, the board is unable to provide many answers to the more specific questions that determined which personnel would be released from their positions.

In looking ahead to the near future, two distinct outcomes among affected students arise: learned hope and continued fear.

“When you lose a member of a team toward something such as the budget cuts or the restructuring of the academic program, it’s naturally going to hit,” Cox said. “My hope is that nobody leaves the choir and that the administration gets what they want through this.”

Brubacher said, “I am fearful for the future, especially in the short-term. While in many years it may be difficult to remember this hard time, right now I fear the costs of these budget cuts will be greater than the gains.”

Change can hurt, but pain also offers space for healing.

That healing often needs the simple, continuous movement of time to take its effect. But the result of the healing will hopefully build an even stronger Tabor College community.
