From the President Do you remember the title of your first full-time job? Mine was “Artificial Intelligence Analyst.” I started with Sprint in 1993 with a small group of software engineers building an expert system to detect toll fraud. It worked, saving the company millions of dollars annually. Not many people had heard of AI then, but 30 years later, I expect most of you have heard of AI and even used an AI tool in the past several months.

Achieving 100 million users in a mere two months, ChatGPT and generative AI are the most prominent AI tools transforming education and the world in 2023. Given a wellwritten prompt or question, these tools produce high-quality content, whether an essay answer or a computer program.

You can even point out errors or give refining comments to continue to improve the results. Despite occasional “hallucinations” (i.e., making up things that aren’t true), it is pretty impressive.

In this age of AI, college students are preparing for an ever-changing world. They must learn major subjects deeply and gain skills that will prepare them for careers, but the tools and technologies of today may be obsolete in a few years. Therefore, they must learn to think critically, analyze data, communicate clearly, understand human psychology, manage time, prioritize, mitigate risks and learn continually. These skills will always be in demand. As we see with AI, we must be wise to discern what is true and how to use technology ethically. We must be agile and able to learn and adjust as work and careers change.

In his book “The Evidence Liberal Arts Needs: Lives of Consequence, Inquiry, and Accomplishment,” Richard A. Detweiler reports compelling research results that demonstrate the advantages students gain when they complete one or more majors in the context of a liberal arts education and community like Tabor’s. He describes liberal arts as entailing content (e.g., humanities, critical thinking, broad education) and context (e.g., small classes, residential living, meaningful relationships). Consistent with the book’s findings, we see many Tabor alumni’s lives characterized by doing things that matter (consequence), life-long learning (inquiry) and achieving success (accomplishment).

This Connection magazine gives many examples of the value of Tabor College’s decidedly Christian liberal arts education. Students and alumni are thriving. I hope you enjoy looking back at Dr. David Faber’s 40 years on the Tabor faculty and remembering 50 years of Contemporary Christian music groups that have complemented Tabor’s rich choral tradition and prepared hundreds of alumni now serving in church music.

It’s a wonderful time to be a Bluejay! Great things are happening on campus and throughout the world amongst Tabor alumni. We celebrate establishing the first three fully funded endowed professorships, moving into our new residence hall, an amazing spiritual climate on campus, accomplishments of athletes and artists, and career achievements of several alumni. We also celebrate bringing computer science back at a time when we can invent the program from the ground up in a new era of AI-assisted computing. I hope you enjoy every page!

Jost Hall officially opens for 2023-24 academic year Jost Hall was dedicated on July 28 ahead of students’ arrival for the 2023-24 academic year. Approximately 200 guests attended the ribbon cutting, part of the Southern District Pastors’ Gathering and Biennial Convention held on Tabor College’s campus.

The 86-bed facility, which houses female students this year, is a significant milestone in the history of Tabor’s residence life. It is the largest hall on campus since the Townhouses with 78 beds were completed in 2007.

“The dedication of Jost Hall is the celebration of God’s faithfulness and the donors who have believed in our vision for Tabor residence life,” said President David Janzen, Ph.D. “This housing will be an invaluable tool in shaping and molding the lives of current and future generations of students.”

Over $6 million was given toward the housing addition, including gifts from the J.E. & L.E. Mabee and Sunderland foundations.

Speakers at the dedication included President Janzen; Ron Braun, vice president of philanthropy; Susan Franz Koslowsky, chair of Tabor’s board of directors, and Frank Johnson, Ph.D., provost.

“The generosity of the Tabor community has been foundational in improving and building new campus facilities,” Braun said. “We praise God for the opportunity to open our newest residence hall, recognizing the way He provided the funds, resources and tools to complete this project.”

The family of LeRoy (Lee) and Janice (Kornelson, fs’52) Jost, the namesakes of the residence hall, were recognized for their selection.

The family’s Tabor roots run deep. Lee, who passed away on Dec. 3, 2022, served on the Board of Directors for 29 years (1968-97), including as chairman and on the executive committee. They were contributors to the construction of the Men’s Quad and are recognized on a plaque outside of Nebraska Hall.

“We have chosen to honor a family who has given so much of themselves to the life and mission of Tabor College over the past 60 years,” Braun said. “Tabor’s mission became their passion, which they supported generously through the decades.”

Savage trusts God in growth as a student & resident assistant

As one of the building’s first resident assistants, Savage remembers seeing the drawings, blueprints, and “shell” as construction progressed over the previous year. The process has made the outcome even sweeter. “It was great to see the blank canvas of an empty dorm,” Savage said. “We turned it into a space that was super welcoming for everyone.”

“Laura carves time out of her busy schedule to get to know the students in her living area, and that time translates into a genuine care for each of her residents,” Sigley said. “Whether she connected quickly with residents or needed to work harder to develop trust with some, Laura is committed.”

After the Townhouses were moved to men’s housing for 2023-24, the opportunity to live in Jost Hall spoke to Savage, especially considering it was the inaugural year of Tabor’s newest residence hall.

When meeting with fellow Jost resident assistants Jacie Myers (JR, McPherson, Kan.), Livia Ensz (SO, Salem, Ore.) and Malorie Hein (SO, Hillsboro, Kan.), she found her “why.”

Faber reflects on 40 years of teaching at Tabor College David Faber, Ph.D., saw Tabor College as the perfect home as he began teaching philosophy in higher education.

“How do we help students to think with a Christian mind? What does it mean to approach any discipline from a Christian perspective?”

With those questions in mind and Tabor’s commitment to Anabaptist theology and Evangelical traditions, Faber has relied on that foundation to guide his instruction for over 40 years.

––––––––––––––––––––– On his first day of teaching, Faber arrived early in the Lohrenz 34 and 36 classrooms.

“There were no students there yet,” he said. “I sat down

When it was time to start, I got up and said, ‘I’m Professor Faber.’ They just laughed and said, ‘No you’re not.’ I didn’t look much older than them.”

Since his start at Tabor, he has used the same academic suite. At the start of his tenure, the offices were occupied by Clarence Hiebert, Ph.D., Harold Dyck, Beverly Holmskog, Katie Funk Wiebe and John McCabe-Juhnke.

“They, and others, set an incredible tone for what it meant to be a Mennonite Brethren college,” Faber said.

That standard of excellence also propelled him as he worked with his students.

“Philosophy allows you to examine your presuppositions in valuable ways and in ways that particular disciplines do not,” he said. “It allows you to step back and think about those presuppositions. I think that is really valuable. That can go into the workplace or in a family or church setting.”

Douglas Miller, Ph.D., emeritus professor of biblical and religious studies, was Faber’s colleague for 28 years. He said he appreciated having someone of Faber’s expertise in the department, noting that not all Christian liberal arts colleges had a faculty member with philosophical training in their Bible departments.

Miller applied and began teaching at Tabor in 1993 and retired in 2021. He remembers speaking to Faber first over the phone, striking a connection that continues to this day.

“Dave thinks analogically and is very insightful,” Miller said. “That was always helpful to us because he pushed us to think carefully and consistently. Numerous times, he proposed analogies that enabled us to think more clearly about a given situation or theological concept. He promoted the importance of the Bible combined with good theological thinking.”

Ensey named Central Kansas Entrepreneurship Center director and assistant professor of business Jeremy Ensey (fs’92) was named director of the Central Kansas Entrepreneurship Center and an assistant professor of business administration at Tabor College. He currently is coowner of the Historic Elgin Hotel in Marion, Kan.

Prior to returning to Tabor, Ensey spent 28 years in education and healthcare, including time as a registered nurse at Via Christi-Saint Francis and the Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kan. He became chief nursing officer at St. Luke in October 2012 and was later named CEO in June 2014 and served until early 2023.

Under his leadership, St. Luke increased gross revenue by 70 percent and completed a $1.5 million building project.

The hospital also started 13 services and outreach programs over the past nine years.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Jeremy to the Tabor faculty,” President David Janzen, Ph.D., said. “His background in administration, entrepreneurship and healthcare will be a tremendous resource for our students and as we seek to educate and equip current and future business owners on our campus and in the community.”

Ensey and his wife, Tammy, have owned and operated the Historic Elgin Hotel for seven years. They also opened Parlour 1886, a restaurant start-up, at the hotel in February 2019.

“On behalf of the City of Hillsboro, we could not be more excited to welcome Jeremy as the director of the Central Kansas Entrepreneurship Center,” Hillsboro Mayor Lou Thurston said. “His vision for entrepreneurship aligns perfectly with our community, and we’re excited to build on our partnership with Tabor to boost and facilitate entrepreneurial growth throughout Marion County.”

Q: What do you want to accomplish on campus as CKEC director & assistant professor of business?

A: I have brought my experience as a small business owner and leadership as a hospital CEO. One of my current classes centers around things I have done professionally out of the classroom. I bring experience outside of academia in what I have done in my career. I hope to explain what I have done to our students and for them to live and learn from my professional experience.

Q: What has impressed you about the students you have met and how they approach business?

A: They have blown me away. I could not believe the number of students who have thought about starting a business, getting ready to, or have already started. They are already doing what it takes. It has been so impressive talking to students about their aspirations and goals.

Q: How do you want to promote business growth on campus, in Hillsboro, and its surrounding communities?

A: We’re looking at Marion County as a whole because, in the end, it positively impacts all of us who call it home. As CKEC director, we’ve got a lot of great resources like Network Kansas and the Small Business Development Center in Emporia. They’ll be able to help us as we look at our future.

A Helping Hand Sheweys building a growing brand in custom clothing & goods Fulfillment is two-fold for Clay (g’13) and Mallory (Flaming, g’13) Shewey.

Owners of Sandstone Avenue, a clothing brand with modern goods and custom gifts, Mallory remembers staying up until 3 or 4 a.m. to prepare orders. Even though she was burning the midnight oil, the Tabor graduate tucked each item neatly, fulfilling her calling of praying multiple times for each mother and family set to receive their gift.

––––––––––––––––––––– Starting in 2019, the Shewey family began to see the business come to life.

When their second child, Quinn, was born, Mallory built a custom sign for her room. Having seen her father teach industrial arts and her mother specialize in interior design, the hunger for creativity was not in question. The impact of her family is even more evident as the business name, Sandstone Avenue, is the street she grew up on in Weatherford, Okla.

Whether it was wall décor, newborn gowns, or swaddle blankets, the door for new products continued to open. She was also making custom decorations for other local teachers.

Mallory stopped teaching in December 2019, having decided to pursue the business full-time.

After moving back to Hillsboro in 2020, the Sheweys purchased a house with a detached shed, allowing Mallory to have a business workspace. Clay handles the business and accounting for Sandstone Avenue but also works a full-time remote job.

They have shipped across the United States, run an Etsy shop, and held a booth at Hillsboro’s annual Arts & Crafts Fair.

The feedback has spread far and wide, speaking to the quality of each product and the message behind it.

“They can message us on Etsy, and we’ve gotten emails, Instagram reviews from everywhere,” Mallory said. “They’ll reference the note in each package. We have a deck of affirmation cards, and we’ll have a situation of a customer who has a sister who isn’t following Christ anymore, and we’ll gift those. It’s more than just a product. It’s the message behind us.”

Their product line and networks on social media continue to expand.

More than 6,000 people follow their Facebook page, and products on their website range from affirmation cards, clothing for all ages, birth announcements, journals, stickers and milestone cards.

“Setting up at the Arts & Crafts Fair was good to show what we create, and we also did a pop-up shop,” Clay said.

“They were two of the biggest revenue days we had. We had people see what we create, and it’s expanded. She’s designing more things and has been able to showcase what she makes.”

Supporting a struggling mom or a parent is personal for Mallory. She was on bed rest during COVID while pregnant with their son, Jaxon.

“Our whole purpose is to encourage moms to love their kids,” she said. “Whatever season you’re in, continue to love and pray for them. Sharing the Gospel every time we ship items out is a blessing.”

––––––––––––––––––––– Mallory didn’t plan to open a business as a Tabor student. Her creativity led her to student contests and events, selling items she created in her spare time.

Her peers as a student had an undeniable impact on the community she wants as a business owner.

“Many of those people still impact my life today, even though I’m no longer at Tabor or teaching,” she said.” They showed me a glimpse of what the Kingdom will look like through their love, kindness, support and encouragement.”

Celebrating over 50 years of history in Contemporary Christian Music Tabor College’s history in Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) has been deeply rooted in the spiritual vitality of its students and campus community. Thousands have heard or seen these groups perform since their inception.

CCM is representative of Tabor’s global impact in church music, including composition and choral conducting.

Tabor’s contemporary groups have included, but are not limited to, The Commitment, Love Is, Alive Again, Forever Free, Harvest Crew, CrossWise, i268 and For His Glory.

The earliest contemporary groups at Tabor coincided with the evolving world of church music of the 1970s, bringing gospel and folk music together.

As one of the first groups, The Commitment was formed when tryouts were held for various music ensembles. The group consisted of 13 members and was accompanied by guitars, string bass, tambourine, piano and flute.

Under the direction of Robert Hauck, D.M.A., The Commitment performed at numerous area churches and neighboring college events, including the Jesus Rock Festival at Bethel College. They also opened for Love Song at the prestigious Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo.

Within the last two decades, CrossWise, i268 and For His Glory have been staples at Mennonite Brethren events such as camps, youth conferences and national conventions.

David Martens (g’85), director of Contemporary Christian Music,

returned to campus in 2013 to lead and teach music classes. He oversees Tabor’s current group, For His Glory.

After having 10-12 students in his original group, Martens has seen numerous musicians emerge. For His Glory is now represented by three groups, with students to lead worship in chapel services and travel to area schools and churches throughout the academic year.

Like For His Glory’s predecessors, Martens aspires to see the group travel and minister to churches, schools and groups nationwide.

Martens said he remembers sitting down with Craig and Lois Wollman, the creators of Harvest Crew, and reminiscing about Tabor’s legacy in contemporary music.

“The most rewarding thing is that I have students serving in churches all over the United States,” Martens said. “The continued involvement these students will have in churches because of what happened here at Tabor is really wonderful.”

Among others, the group led worship at the Central District Youth Conference in Inwood, Iowa. They also led worship and spoke at chapel for Central Christian School in Hutchinson, Kan., in October.

“It is really encouraging for our students to lead junior-high and highschool students into worship and that they are impacted by what they are doing,” Martens said. “We have students at Tabor now because of the ministry of our students in their schools and chapel services. It is deeply impactful for all involved.”

Allen Hiebert Chair of Sciences Allen Hiebert (g’63), a native of Hillsboro, Kan., earned his B.A. in chemistry from Tabor College, and a week after his graduation was married to Lois (Frantz g’86) Hiebert, also a Tabor graduate. He completed his master’s and doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana. After earning his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry in 1967, he spent a year in post-doctoral research at Michigan State University and then began teaching at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., where he received the “Excellence in Teaching” award. After 16 years at Knox, and achieving the rank of associate professor in chemistry, he returned to his alma mater, Tabor College, where he wanted to teach “academics within a framework of people who value the Christian faith and are willing to explore what that means and contribute to the long history of excellence in the sciences at Tabor.” Hiebert was part of the science faculty at Tabor for 23 years, retiring in 2007. Hiebert expressed his faith in Christ through service in church leadership and teaching, and as a strong supporter of the Mennonite Central Committee, both on the MCC bi-national level and the local Hillsboro area meat-canning work. Marvin Sellberg was a fixture of the Tabor College business department, serving as a longtime department chair and working at the college for 22 years (1968-1990). A graduate of Central College in 1946, he earned his M.B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1949. He served as assistant professor of business and economics at Tabor from 1968-78, and after a break of four years at McPherson College, Sellberg returned to Tabor in 1982, serving eight years till 1990. As a Tabor professor, he was active in the Associated Colleges of Central Kansas and the Kansas Wheat Commission. He attended the first World Food Conference in Rome in 1974 and presented on such topics as the “Perspective of a Farmer on Hunger” at later conferences. He was known as a man with a big heart, and many of his students affectionately referred to themselves as “his disciples.” Sellberg received Tabor faculty emeritus status in May 2008. There was no secret about where Tabor College women’s cross country wanted to end its season.

The Bluejays set their sights on becoming the first team in school history to qualify for the NAIA National Championships, and that goal was accomplished.

After finishing second at the KCAC Cross Country Championships in Winfield, Kan., they officially sealed their Nov.17 trip to Vancouver, Wash.

“They showed up and did what they needed to punch their ticket to the national meet,” said head coach Rylan Hincher. “They have continually raised the bar this year and it has been exciting to watch them day in and day out, taking our program to a place it has never been.”

Tabor was one of 36 teams to qualify and was selected as an at-large team after finishing second at its conference meet and finishing inside the Top 30 in the final in-season team ranking. Led by Hincher, KCAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year, Tabor soared to its best national ranking in program history. Their No. 14 ranking easily cleared the national qualifying standards.

After the regular season, they were also named KCAC Women’s Cross Country Team of Character.

The Bluejay women finished 19th nationally in their trip to Vancouver and Brooke Wiebe (SR, Newton, Kan.) and Aubrey Bahner (JR, Topeka, Kan.) recorded the two best national finishes in program history at 45th and 68th, respectively.

“It has been fun watching our team’s goals come true,” Wiebe said “When I first arrived, I didn’t know how hard it was to get to nationals, and each year we’ve taken a step further. This year, we’ve reached that point and it’s so satisfying to accomplish the goal of getting our team there.”

Wiebe is in her third season at Tabor, and after qualifying for nationals alongside teammate Danielle Allison (SR, Oakley, Kan.) in 2022, they can’t wait to have their teammates join them.

Allison and Wiebe led a group of four runners inside the top 15 at the conference meet. They were joined by Bahner and Hannah Grover (FR, Valley Center, Kan.) Julianna Maxfield (FR, Fullerton, Neb.) joined Grover as one of three freshmen on the roster, and she said the depth of talent was evident from when she first arrived.

“It has been cool stepping into this larger team and seeing how much talent we have,” Maxfield said. “I’ve learned so much by watching and listening to these ladies lead us through our first year.”

Across Tabor’s Fall Sports…

• Tabor volleyball swept Bethany (27-25, 25-20, 25-18) in its opening match of the KCAC Postseason Tournament. It further represents a significant jump for the program after finishing 4-25 just one year ago. The Bluejays wrapped the regular season with an eighth-place finish in the KCAC and a 14-12 overall record.

• Tabor football celebrated a 31-21 win over Bethel College on Homecoming. In his first career start at quarterback, William Green (SO, Benbrook, Texas) finished 19-of-34 passing for 244 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Jordan Bolden (JR, Tallahassee, Fla.) caught two of those scores. It gave the Bluejays their first win of 2023 and also broke a three-game losing streak to the rival Threshers.

DeLeon, Webb and 2014 baseball team named to Athletics Hall of Fame The 2014 Tabor College baseball team, Manny DeLeon and Jacob Webb were named the 2023 inductees for the Athletics Hall of Fame.

All three were recognized at an Oct. 1 ceremony on campus in the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts.

The 2014 Bluejay baseball team capped a historic 2014 campaign with a fifth-place finish at the NAIA College World Series. DeLeon was the 2016 NAIA Player of the Year, while Webb was selected as the 2014 KCAC Pitcher of the Year and continues his professional career with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 2014 baseball team finished 51-13, including a 24-4 record in KCAC play. Tabor won the KCAC regular season and KCAC Tournament championships and finished in the top six of seven different statistics, highlighted by a second-place finish in total doubles (147), third in batting average (.350), and fifth in total hits (595), total runs scored (464), and RBIs (422).

Kirk Rocha was named KCAC Player of the Year, and Webb earned Pitcher of the Year honors. Colton Flax was tabbed Freshman of the Year and Head Coach Mark Standiford was named Coach of the Year. Tabor grabbed 11 individual awards and boasted four first-team, All-KCAC performers, five second-team, and four honorable mention selections. Junior Mustain was a second-team NAIA All-American, while Rocha and Webb were both named honorable mention.

Webb finished his career at Tabor with a record in season strikeouts (129) and the second-best career ERA (1.74). The former Bluejay pitched at Tabor in 2013 and 2014 and was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 18th round of the MLB Draft. Webb won a World Series with the Braves in 2021 and made 29 appearances for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this past season before joining the Orioles in August.

DeLeon, the Bluejays’ centerfielder, was named an NAIA and KCAC first-team selection. He also added honors of KCAC Player of the Year, KCAC Player of the Week (twice), and the Tabor College Male Athlete of the Year.

DeLeon led the nation in an impressive six categories: RBI/game (1.742), bases/game (3.355), home runs (25), total bases (208), RBIs (108), and slugging percentage (0.897). He was also second in total hits (102) and home runs per game (0.403) and was in the top 10 in five other

‘Entangled Harmony’: Threaded Landscapes on Display

Shin-hee Chin, M.F.A. With a threaded needle, international fiber artist Shin-hee Chin repeatedly penetrates the backing fabric of well-worn quilts.

“The stitching is the movement with the hand, and it’s a lot of engagement–my energy, actually,” she said. “It is different from the photographic image.”

One finished landscape captures a rambling brook in a wooded forest while another the serenity of tall grasses gently waving on the Kansas prairie.

These two artworks, “Summer Pastoral” and “Big Bluestem,” were among the 24 on display at her “Entangled Harmony” solo exhibition from Oct. 6 to Nov. 19 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“The title alludes to thread as the medium,” said Chin, professor of art at Tabor College, about the exhibition. “In past shows, I’ve done a lot of humans, but this show is all about my relationship to the subtle landscape of the Midwest.”

The show also refers to the connection humans have with nature.

“Even though I’m just showing the landscape of places, the places are related to humans,” she said.

The exhibit includes both abstract and representational images.

“Creating landscapes is not about copying the real thing but imbuing my idea, my sentiment, my creativity to the scenes,” said Chin, who has taught art classes since 2004 at Tabor.

By expressing her ideas or sentiments about nature, Chin said she’s referring to “spirit resonance,” the Chinese character that means having vitality.

“Stitches keep reminding me who I am,” she said. “That’s why I keep working with thread.”

Nineteen threaded landscapes in the exhibition incorporate the musical influence of Romantic composers Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, and Schumann.

“One of my big attempts is to create forest scenes with Beethoven’s symphonies No. 1 to No. 9,” she said, adding that for now she has omitted No. 8.

“The scenery is the forest or trees,” she said about the artworks.

“Beethoven liked to walk in the woods, and he received a lot of inspiration from nature. I will give my tribute to the great composer. He got energy from nature.”

Chin also created a landscape tribute to the people of Tulsa inspired by the 1865 black spiritual “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” composed by Wallace Willis in Oklahoma.

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the gallery 108 Contemporary, located near the John Franklin Hope Reconciliation Park that remembers the 1921 Race Massacre and honors the contributions of African Americans in Oklahoma.

“When I mention the impression or sentiment of the place, it moves beyond the reality,” Chin said. “So, I connect to a place like Tulsa, Oklahoma. I relate to the spirit of the citizens. They are acknowledging the tragic event in 1921 but also paying tribute to those who have faced injustice and silence for 80 years.”

Womanhood is an underlying theme in Chin’s artwork.

“That is my concept in the stitches, which are traditionally a woman’s handiwork that is cozy and makes a house beautiful,” she said. “I use that technique and I use it in fine art.”

While some have referred to her artwork as thread paintings, she counters.

“Each medium has its own beauty,” Chin said about her choice to work with thread. “A photograph has beauty with the flatness, painting has its own beauty with the brushstrokes, and stitching has its own beauty with the stitches.”

Ishida takes Tabor experience to HS administration

Ricky Ishida never visited Hillsboro before leaving California to play football at Tabor College.

A three-year varsity quarterback at Shafter (Calif.) High School, Ishida left Bakersfield College for Tabor at a friend’s prompting.

After arriving in Kansas, Ishida led the Bluejays to three consecutive NAIA playoff appearances, including Tabor’s first postseason victory. But for his success on the field, Ishida says relationships left a lasting impact.

“Little did I know that the game of football (would be) just a small piece of my time at Tabor,” he says. “Coaches and teachers invested in me. That drew me to want to give back.”

A decorated career

The 2002 Shafter graduate earned all-league nods at quarterback and defensive back and received an offer from Tabor coach Tim McCarty. Ishida arrived on campus in 2003 and started game three after quarterback David Hernandez sustained an injury. Ishida led the Bluejays to the playoffs.

“Coach McCarty would have to kick me out of his office because I was always watching film,” he says. “I wanted to stay a step ahead.”

Under coach Mike Gardner, Tabor won KCAC titles in 2004 and 2005. In the 2004 KCAC championship—a double overtime win versus Bethel College—Ishida had six touchdowns. Tabor lost a first-round playoff game that year, and Ishida ranked 14th nationally in passing yards per game (211.4).

“Our theme was ‘One heartbeat,’” he says. “That is exactly what we were.”

The three-time, firstteam All-KCAC quarterback claimed a host of school records in his career, including passing yards (6,647), completions (505), total offense (6,940), and passing touchdowns (46).

“I wish I could relive that time because it was so special,” he says.

Additional memories include his mother’s attendance at the Graceland game after his father died of cancer and proposing to his wife, Hailey, on the field before the 2005 homecoming game. The couple has two children, ages 14 and 11.

Behind the jersey

In 2005, after an undefeated KCAC campaign, the Bluejays defeated Graceland University, 17-14, to secure Tabor’s first postseason victory.

Offensively, Ishida was 18-for-27 for 160 yards and one touchdown.

“It was a surreal moment that (could) only be put together by the Lord,” he says. “(It brought together) a lot of men from different walks of life. It was a collective effort.”

After a quarterfinal loss, Tabor ended the season ranked sixth in the NAIA. Ishida ranked 24th in offensive yards per game (206.3).

Beyond the gridiron, relationships influenced Ishida at Tabor. Ishida’s resident assistant gave him his first Bible, and he participated in team devotions, leading him to accept Christ.

“God put godly men in my life to see God’s light,” he says. “Going to Tabor was so life-changing for me. (I) saw the value in relationships and people and what God orchestrated in this small town called Hillsboro.”

Ishida graduated in 2006 with a degree in secondary education and returned to California. He has served in education since 2007, teaching at Shafter High, South High and Vista West Continuation High, and holding student behavior and support roles at Tierra Del Sol Continuation High School and Mira Monte High School. He earned his M.Ed. in educational leadership in 2011.

Ishida began serving as assistant principal of administration at Foothill High School in 2022, overseeing discipline, inter-district transfers, classified personnel, facilities and safety. He also coordinates positive behavior intervention and support.

“Working with students has been the best part about being an educator,” he says. “I can show my servant’s heart, my shining light from the Lord, by my actions and words.”

Ishida wants to have a similar impact as what he experienced at Tabor.

“The people at Tabor had servant hearts and wanted what’s best for you,” he says. “They knew you by name. It wasn’t about the extra-curricular activities. It was, ‘I’m going to see what’s behind that jersey.’”

Hunter Dudley (SR, Sparks, Nev.) chose to attend Tabor to play baseball and earn a business degree.

Set on achieving his goals, Dudley initially didn’t focus on attending Bible studies or SP&D or making many friends.

That is until fellow baseball player Jonathan Kimball invited him to the team’s Bible study.

Dudley met others on campus who poured into him and helped him grow well beyond a basic knowledge of God. “Tabor is where I learned to have a relationship with him,” he said.

Dudley now leads Bible studies, played a major role in beginning the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Tabor, and serves on the Campus Ministries Council.

He is one of those students at Tabor shaped by its spiritual climate. Computer Science coming back to Tabor Beginning in fall 2024, Tabor College will re-add computer science to its catalog of over 30 majors. It returns after previously being offered from 1983-2008.

The major is within the Science & Mathematics department and will require a new professor for the 2024 start date.

Ryan Calvert, Ph.D., and Daniel Creamer, Ph.D., Al & Dotty Warkentine Professor of Mathematical Studies, will assist in forming the program.

Designed around four concentrations, the program will range from 45 to 60 credit hours, depending on the selection.

The concentrations include software engineering, computer science, data science, and bioinformatics.

The newly-named major aligns with U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics data for the fastest-growing occupations.

With five of the listed 15 occupations, the computer science major presents abundant opportunities for students entering the workplace.

“Strong job prospects and earnings opportunities make computer science a very attractive major,” President David Janzen, Ph.D., said. “Studying computer science in Tabor’s liberal arts and decidedly Christian context served me extremely well, and I am excited to reinvent the program with these creative and compelling concentrations.”

Through nine classes that will be added and the courses already in place, students will learn highly sought-after technical and communication skills for a rapidly growing field.

Tabor added a major in data science & analytics in August 2023. After adding computer science and its four concentrations, the major will be data analytics.

“The addition of the computer science major will be instrumental in what we offer current and prospective students,” Creamer said. “We look forward to equipping our students with the skills they need to thrive in the marketplace.”

Johnson, Kroeker recognized at Homecoming Dinner Carey Johnson Ph.D. (g’73) and Cassie Kroeker (g’13) were the 2023 Homecoming Alumni Award recipients. Johnson received the Alumni Merit Award after a decorated 40-plus-year career in teaching Chemistry.

He was named an Emeritus Professor after 15 years in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Kansas. Recent grants under Johnson’s leadership also totaled over $2 million. Kroeker was given the Alumni Medallion Award. She serves as an Accounts Payable Specialist for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx, Iowa Wolves (NBA G-League), and Timberwolves Gaming.

Celebrating the service of six retiring Tabor board members The Tabor College Board of Directors celebrated the service of six longtime members at its 2023 fall meetings on Oct. 20-21. With a combined 119 years of service, Mark Jost (fs’79), Dean Nachtigall (g’68), Dennis Penner (g’69), Diana (Penner g’72) Raugust, Tim Sullivan (g’86), and Dick Unruh (g’65) have been integral in Tabor’s growth and

sustainability. Tabor is grateful for their commitment and vision in supporting its mission of preparing people for a life of learning, work, and service for Christ and His kingdom.

Jost, a farmer near Henderson, Neb., served on the board for 10 years. He is married to Jane (Reimer g’79), and they have three children: Cody (Jost fs’03) Farrall, Casey (Jost g’07) Burgess, and Bret (g’10).

Nachtigall, a retired physician from Willow Street, Pa., was on the board for 10 years. He is married to Carol (Janzen g’68), and they have four children: Andrew, Brian, Jeffery and Jonathon.

Penner is a retired businessman from Cimarron, Kan., and served on the board for 27 years. He is married to Marilyn (Disch g’71), and they have four children: Michelle (Penner g’94) Ediger, Tamara (Penner g’96) Regier, Kristina (Penner g’98) Zeller, and Jeffrey (g’02).

Raugust, a retired educator from Wichita, Kan., was on the board for 18 years. She is married to Barry (g’72), and they have two children: Tonya (Raugust g’99) Bronleewe and Paul (g’03) Sullivan resides in Wichita, Kan., and will soon retire as USMB Southern District Minister. He is married to Donna (Johnson tcw’00), and they have three children: Ryan (g’98), Joshua and Melanie (fs’03).

Dick Unruh, a retired educator from Meade, Kan., served on the board for 33 years. He is married to Carol (Loewen g’67), and they have three children: Bryce (g’91), Craig (g’93), and Kory (g’00).

Alumni News – 1970s Roger Goosen (g’74) retired after teaching for 40 years in Kremlin-Hillsdale Public Schools in Kremlin, Okla. He previously held positions in Fairfield, Kan., Phillips University (Okla.), and Northwestern Oklahoma State University. While at Tabor, Goosen was the student council president in 1972-73 and 1973-74.

1980s Dr. Jarrod Goentzel (g’90) is the founder and director of the MIT Humanitarian Supply Chain Lab and principal research scientist at the MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics. Through MIT and edX, an online education provider that offers online courses from some of the world’s leading institutions, Goentzel taught Humanitarian Logistics. It centers on creating supply chain plans, empowering individuals passionate about working within humanitarian crises, and understanding disaster preparedness, emergency response and protracted crises.

1990s Bryce Unruh (g’91) is an aerospace manager in the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California-Berkeley. He has also been developing a new mission concept for NASA called ESCAPE. It is an astrophysics space mission designed to provide the first comprehensive study of the stellar EUV environments that control atmospheric mass loss and determine the habitability of rocky exoplanets.

Gaven (g’19) and Jessanna (Nebel g’19) Schumann opened Revive Therapy and Performance (RTP) in 2022, and are based near Hesston, Kan. The facility is an outpatient clinic that offers physical and occupational therapy services. They work closely with Mercy Hospital in Moundridge, Kan.

2020s Noah Brown (g’21) serves as director of player development for the University of Hawaii women’s basketball. He assists with oncourt instruction, film and team operations.

Paige Isaac (g’21) accepted the position of student-athlete assistant academic counselor at the University of Georgia. She will specifically work with the baseball and swimming/diving teams.

2010s Jacob Webb (fs’14) finished the season with the Baltimore Orioles, making one appearance against the Texas Rangers in the American League Division Series. He made 25 appearances for the Orioles, pitching 22 innings and tallying 23 strikeouts with a 3.27 ERA. Before moving to the East Coast, he made 29 appearances with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, pitching 31.2 innings and totaling 34 strikeouts with a 3.98 ERA.
