Without question, COVID-19 dominates the present, the recent past and the future at Tabor College. Our time, energy and capacity are given to creating a safe and reasonable learning environment for our students, faculty, staff and community. We have worked diligently in planning and implementing a safe and reasonable response. We claim the words of Psalm 90:17: “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us — yes, establish the work of our hands.”

Our attitudes and responses to all that is part of COVID-19 are what make the difference. The faculty and staff of Tabor are demonstrating a CAN DO attitude in attacking the challenge with creativity, innovation and determination.

Our mission, vision and values are motivating us to fulfill our stewardship commitment to our students. This is typical Tabor.

Rising to the challenge is part of the Tabor DNA. Dealing with a pandemic and societal unrest is not new to Tabor. In 1918, Tabor burned to the ground. In 1920, Tabor dedicated two new buildings. Between the fire and the dedication of the new buildings, the world experienced the pandemic known as the Spanish Flu, which took 50 million lives globally and 675,000 lives in the United States.

(COVID-19 numbers are 1.1 million deaths globally and 220,000 in the U.S.) In 1919, riots, racial unrest and the killing of hundreds of African Americans took place in three dozen cities in what would become known as Red Summer.

During that pandemic and racial unrest, Tabor was rebuilt.

Might we say, “Tabor has been there, done that.” Simply put, Tabor is acquainted with meeting challenges.

The COVID-19 experience is driving home three leadership lessons for me.

Preparation trumps planning. We have and continue to spend hours in planning for every possible detail. No matter how much we planned, the twists and turns of the impact of the virus kept changing, sometimes hour by hour, often causing us to pivot and adjust our plans. New data informed our plans, and what we thought was true one day had changed by the next. Some days it changed from the morning to the afternoon. In the end, what we are learning is that all we can do is be prepared for possibilities.

Know what you control and what you do not. A reality of COVID-19 is that most things are out of our control.

Someone has said, “If it is in your control, take responsibility. If it is out of your control, trust the process. If it is within your influence, make decisions wisely.” Focusing on what we do have control over is essential. Taking responsibility for that which is in our control, regardless of how small it seems, is the right course of action.

Know and identify the risks you are willing to take.

Most of our decisions have required us to make trade-offs.

For example, the PCR test is 8 percent more accurate than the rapid-antigen test we are using. However, the rapid-antigen test results can be known within 15 minutes while the PCR results take 24-48 hours to receive. We have decided that knowing sooner with a less accurate test and thus keeping a possible infected person out of circulation on campus is better than having the potentially infected person engaging in campus life and thus spreading the virus. Repeatedly we are faced with the question of how much risk are we willing to take and balancing the risk with what is best for creating a safe and reasonable learning environment.

COVID-19 has changed how we live life together as a college. I continue to have hope, knowing that we are not in this alone. The Lord is with us each step of the way.

Presidential Transition Announcement Just prior to the printing of The Connection, the Board of Directors and President Glanzer made the following announcement: Statement from the Board of Directors: Together with President Glanzer we have set in motion a process to begin a presidential leadership transition at Tabor College with the purpose of continuing to advance the College while President Glanzer transitions into retirement. Together we are planning for a presidential transition within the next 18 months. The board is thankful to President Glanzer for his many years of service and will work with him for a seamless transition. The Executive Committee of the Board has met, serving as the Presidential Transition Discernment Committee, and a search committee will be formed soon to identify the best leader for Tabor as we continue to serve our students and fulfill our mission.

Statement from President Glanzer: I love Tabor, and after almost 13 years of service, still find fulfillment, joy and great meaning to serve in the capacity of president of the College. However, to effectively lead Tabor into the next era will require a president who has the energy, stamina and capacity needed to address and respond to the many challenges. Therefore, after much prayer, I am requesting that a Presidential Transition Discernment Committee be formed to help me discern the best way to keep the college advancing while I transition into retirement. The entire time of my service, I felt called to lead “for such a time as this.” I believe that time is coming to an end. I am thankful to the board for entrusting the stewardship of the college into my hands these past years. With my retirement, I will return that stewardship to the board.

Tabor Announces Record New Student Enrollment Tabor College announces a new-student enrollment of 236 for fall 2020, up 34 percent in freshmen and an overall increase of 23 percent in the entering class, including transfers. The largest freshmen class in the history of the school accounts for 171 of the 236 new students. Not only is this the largest number of new students in the history of Tabor, but the mean grade-point average for both freshmen and transfers is up higher than last year’s.

“I attribute the success of the 2020 recruiting class to God and his wonderful provision, but also to the diligent work by recruiters, coaches, faculty, staff and our constituents,” said Grant Myers, dean of enrollment.

Of particular interest is the fact that this year’s freshmen class has 31 students from Mennonite Brethren churches across the United States representing the Southern, Central, Pacific and Latin American districts.

“The significant increase in the number of students who attend MB churches is a result of effective scholarship programs, the hard work of our admissions recruiters and God’s favor,” said Rusty Allen, executive vice president for operations. “We could not be more excited to see how the increased number of students from MB churches will positively impact our campus culture.”

The overall traditional head count enrollment for Fall 2020 is 504, which represents a 0.5 percent increase from fall 2019. Tabor’s traditional students for fall 2020 hail from 40 states and 18 countries. Tabor’s mission of preparing students for lives of learning, work and service for Christ and

With the initiation of a Kingdom Awareness and Real-World Readiness approach to the college experience, Tabor College leaders said they are positioned for equipping students to go into numerous vocations and bring more of heaven to Earth.

“We believe the Tabor Promise and the Tabor Advantage appeal to students and their families,” Allen said. “We believe God is partnering with us and consider the stewardship of our students to be an honor and a privilege.”

New Faculty at Tabor College Tabor College began the fall semester with seven new faculty members, six in the School of Professional Studies and one in the School of Liberal Arts.

“I am so impressed with what each of our new faculty members brings to the institution,” said Academic Dean Frank Johnson. “I have already seen them going above and beyond to serve their students and colleagues and look forward to future collaboration with them as we further Tabor College’s mission, vision and values.”

James Titah, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Chemistry Titah comes from Concordia University of Edmonton, Alberta, where he served as instructor in chemistry. He hails from Cameroon and holds degrees from the University of Buea and the University of New Brunswick. Titah’s wife and children are in the process of relocating from Canada to join him in Kansas.

The two-story, 8,400-square foot building is located on the former circle drive between the college library and student center. The welcome center will serve as a gateway to the campus and a first stop for campus guests. The first floor is dedicated to admissions and the second floor brings together offices of advancement and the president for synergistic relationships.

“This welcome center is a gift of love, representing a husband’s love for his wife and a couple’s love for the mission and vision of Tabor,” Glanzer told those gathered.

“We’re so thankful to Chuck and Shari for making this gift to us.”

Glanzer added that impacting more students will help Tabor better fulfill its mission to prepare people for a life of learning, work and service for Christ and his kingdom.

Eleven months after breaking ground for the new Shari Flaming Welcome Center at Tabor College, Chamber of Commerce members, city and county officials, architects, contractors, faculty, staff and community members gathered Aug. 3 for its ribbon cutting.

“For some time now, we have longed for a new welcome center to make our prospective students and campus guests feel welcomed,” President Jules Glanzer told the crowd.

“And we desired to create a campus entrance that would provide a positive first impression for our guests and help us create a strong culture of hospitality.”

Interest in the project surfaced about five years ago after Chuck Flaming, a farmer from Nebraska, visited the campus.

“Jules, your welcome center doesn’t look good,” he said. “You need a new one.”

So Glanzer encouraged Flaming to give the project some thought. A few months later, he responded with a proposal.

“My wife was known for hospitality and was a gracious hostess,” Flaming told President Jules Glanzer and donor Glanzer. “People felt welcomed by her. I’d Chuck Flaming.

Tabor Launching New M.Ed Program in Neuroscience and Trauma The Tabor College Education Department and School of Graduate Studies will launch a new online Master of Education in Neuroscience and Trauma program in summer 2021.

This original, first-of-its-kind program is an answer to the vital need in the United States for trauma-informed educators and professionals. Any teacher, social worker, counselor or correction officer working with children who have suffered acute stress or trauma will find the program to be transformational in providing necessary knowledge and skills.

paring teachers for the art of teaching or pedagogy, but few are good at preparing teachers for the science of teaching or neuroscience and psychology.”

Many teachers or professionals feel unprepared to effectively engage with students who were disadvantaged by difficult life situations. Poverty, abuse and neglect are a few of the stress factors students suffer that make learning a burdensome challenge for them.

“To help bridge the gap in my own knowledge of these students’ challenges, I decided to do postdoctoral work on a certificate in neuroscience at Harvard University,” Stevens said. “After 12 years of neuroscience study/research, I have developed an educational foundation that is informed and grounded in the latest cognitive neuroscience.”

Upon joining Tabor in fall 2019, Stevens learned that his colleagues shared his enthusiasm for the cognitive sciences and whose knowledge and disciplines make them essential partners in the development of an online program for trauma-informed educators.

Psychology professor Jim Paulus, social work professor Lara Vanderhoof and education professor Sarah Tham are the key faculty integral to the programs development and teaching. The Master of Education in Neuroscience and Trauma is a 30-credit, four-semester program that can be completed in one year.

“Faith integration will be a natural theme throughout the program as each class will have a self-awareness component that examines the neuroscience and psychology of spirituality,” said Rick Bartlett, associate dean of graduate studies.

• A student who needs to quarantine returns home if possible; otherwise, quarantine facilities and meals are provided.

• Receptions, dinners and larger gatherings are curtailed.

When there are no active cases, campus moves back to GREEN. If Tabor can no longer quarantine or isolate effectively, campus moves to ORANGE.

When the number of cases of COVID-19 returns to a level that can be effectively quarantined and isolated as determined by the Crisis Management Team, the campus moves back to YELLOW. If the Marion County Health Department recommends that all Tabor faculty, staff and students vacate the physical plant, campus moves to RED.

‘Tabor Together’ a Resounding Theme During COVID-19 The outbreak of COVID-19 has changed life for us at Tabor College. Health concerns are at the forefront, with most of us knowing someone who has been touched by the virus.

The last nine months have brought about enormous disruption.

Calling it a paradigm shift seems anemic. But calling it life-changing, opportunity yielding—well, that seems to better capture its impact.

Throughout its history Tabor has faced times of adversity, and once again we are experiencing that Tabor is better together.

Most directly affected by the coronavirus are those who manage areas at the forefront of Tabor Together: Emir Ruiz-Esparza, dean of student life, learning and formation; Terry Ens, facilities manager; Rob Scott, food service director with Pioneer College Caterers; and Marty Ziesmer, athletic director.

Tom Shaw, vice president of advancement, asked each to share glimpses into what they have experienced during the last nine months in running the College.

SHAW: What has most dramatically changed in your team’s work during COVID-19?

ENS: “We learned to pivot. When students were not able to return after spring break, we realized we were faced with challenges. First was assisting in the waves of students returning to campus to get their belongings. Next was how to prepare for fall semester when we started out with no roadmap.”

RUIZ-ESPARZA: “The impact of the residence experience is the first thing. How to build community during COVID-19 has been a major focus for my team. For example, should we have open hours or not?

We determined, for community sake, to have open hours. The second is having more events on campus and most of those being outdoors, and intentionally so. Creative solutions also led Tabor to introduce e-sports, an intramural program opportunity. Yes, video games such as football and tennis were played against others around campus and the world.”

ZIESMER: “We have had to limit the stadium and gym in capacity. We have to screen all athletes and coaches before each practice and to screen anybody involved with game management before each competition. Plus, we have had to put more signage up than in the past to assure everyone is aware of key safety precautions.”

SCOTT: “We removed about 25 percent of the seating in the dining hall to promote physical distancing. We also began the fall semester with attended service. Following the approval of Marion County Health Department, we transitioned back to self-serve to assist in reducing the crowding. It looks somewhat different than it has in the past as we are requiring masks, sanitizing hands and changing out utensils often so that they can be disinfected. Plexiglass shields were also put up at the cashier stand and over at Courtside Grill.”

SHAW: What has become the new normal that previously was not routine?

ENS: “We learned that instead of people having to work around us, we needed to adapt more to people’s personal needs than ever before. By understanding we all have different levels of needs for personal space and safety, we are far more cautious about how we work.

We enter workspaces differently; we move through buildings more cautiously in the interest of others’ needs. In isolation areas we have a lot more prep work to do to keep ourselves safe as well.”

ZIESMER: “I was skeptical of online ticketing for events, but I have become a fan of this, and it will become the new normal but with a few minor changes.”

RUIZ-ESPARZA: “Doing more Zoom meetings than we ever have.”

SCOTT: “We have changed many different things many times this semester, so a new normal for us is adapting to change on a regular basis. Another new normal is requiring people to wear masks and sanitize hands before entering the buffet areas.”

SHAW: What have you learned about your Tabor colleagues and students during your journey through this time?

ZIESMER: “The amount of flexibility and collaboration between the entire campus community has been amazing. While COVID-19 was not something anybody wanted or desired, the ‘can do’ attitude of all to make the best of this situation has been outstanding.”

SCOTT: “It was interesting being part of the planning team this summer for reopening in fall. I got to experience working with everyone in a different setting as we planned the opening. I started the year worried about the different aspects of the dining hall experience, but quickly found that almost everyone is respectful of the changes that we have had to put into place.”

RUIZ-ESPARZA: “I’m very impressed with all the Tabor departments. Colleagues exemplified a willingness to do everything possible to open school for the in-person experience. Since then both have died but their legacies live on. “I learned that even being in college was a remote dream a few years ago,” Delarosa said in a recent conversation with Ron Braun, vice president of philanthropy. “I was the first in my family to graduate from high school, and college wasn’t even a thought. But here I am, planning now to be the first in my family to graduate from college.”

Commencement 2020 Tabor College Holds Postponed 2020 Commencement Tabor College held its 110th commencement at 10 a.m. Sunday Oct. 11 at Joel H. Wiens Stadium at Reimer Field. Because of COVID-19, the event was postponed from this past May. The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Stephen Wilkens (g ’77), a long-time professor of philosophy and ethics at Azusa Pacific University. Wilkens challenged the graduates with cleverly defining the word ‘definition,’ noting three aspects related to a commencement.

First, ‘defined’ as meaning a terminal point, bringing to an end.

Second, ‘defined’ as meaning what’s inside the boundaries of the package.

A college degree opens career doors and increases the likelihood of higher earnings in one’s vocation. Also, degree holders can experience extended years of life. Third, ‘defined’ as meaning identifying purpose – what it’s all about. Wilkens encouraged the graduates to continue to develop virtues in their lives and to bring light into relationships.

Speakers from the Class of 2020 contributed to the program, and the Symphonic Band and Concert Choir performed musical numbers. More than 90 graduates were present to receive their diplomas, plus another 30 who were recognized but unable to attend. Diplomas, honor cords, hoods and bibles were among items passed along to these new alumni of Tabor.

While seating was limited, many attended via live streaming.

Summer Musical Theatre Camp Twenty-five middle and high schoolers enjoyed a fabulous week singing, dancing and acting at the second annual Summer Musical Theatre Camp from July 12-18 at Tabor College.

Days began with breakfast and devotions around the theme of community. Mornings were spent in workshops: character development and script interpretation, set design and construction, choreography, improvisational acting and stage makeup. Afternoons were reserved for rehearsal for the show titled “Opening Up: Singing Our Way Through a New World.”

“It was just so refreshing to be with students after several months where we were basically locked out and seeing them work so hard to put this show together,” said Dr. Greg Zielke, director, adding that the students adapted very well to all the COVID protocols such as wearing masks and face shields.

The cast of 11 and crew of four began production as school opened in August, and the actors learned to carry the emotion and action purely through their voices, said Assistant Professor Lauren Carlton, who is director of theatre at Tabor.

“I learned that voice acting takes a lot more than regular acting because you have to use your voice instead of the body to make the action happen,” said Betsy George, sophomore.

The play was written by Philip Grecian, adapted from his own stage play and the 1818 novel by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. Original music was composed by Chris Teichler, director of bands at Tabor. Sound effects were produced by foley actors, who made the effects live on stage by using various objects and vocalizations.

“This kind of production gave our students an opportunity to do theatre in a new and different way,” said Carlton, who directed the play. Production staff included Chris Glanzer, sound; Austin Harleson, scenic and lighting; 16

and Lily Arthur, costumes. The play was produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois.

A full-moon Halloween broadcast of the Tabor Theatre production was broadcast on Oct. 31 on Radio Kansas 90.1 and online at radioks.org.

Fall Sports Update

Football

The season start date was moved back to Sept. 12 because of COVID-19 with Tabor facing Southwestern College in Winfield. After leading 21-14 at the half, Tabor fell by the final of 41-21. The home opener saw Tabor lose to Friends 17-7 before hosting McPherson. The Bluejays controlled the first three quarters before giving up three scores in the fourth quarter, seeing McPherson come from behind for the 21-14 victory. Tabor’s games versus Ottawa University and Bethel College were postponed.

Volleyball

First-year head coach Mike MacNeill has made an immediate impact on the volleyball program. The Bluejays started the season with a record to 9-3. Tabor is also 3-0 in conference play, starting with a win at Bethel College. The Bluejays hosted a conference triangular, new to the KCAC this year, and started with a win over York College. Tabor’s most impressive victory was their latest, as they defeated the preseason No. 3 pick in the KCAC, Bethany College, in a four-set thriller.

Women’s Cross Country

The women’s team gained two runners this fall, and their success picked up right where it left off last season. The women started the season with a second-place finish at McPherson following that with a third-place finish at Kansas Wesleyan. The Bluejays bounced back with a secondplace finish at the Cottonwood Challenge, first among all KCAC and NAIA teams.

Conangela Senior, a senior from Spanish Town, Jamaica, finished third. She was the top KCAC and NAIA runner in the meet, earning KCAC Women’s Runner-of-theWeek for her efforts.

Men’s Soccer

Head coach Grant Brubacher entered the season with 42 players, 10 more than last year. But several early season games were canceled because of Covid-19. The Bluejays started match play against an experienced Bellevue University team, resulting in a 6-0 loss. The Bluejays soon after evened their record with an impressive victory at home over Manhattan Christian College, 5-2 win. Tabor suffered an opening KCAC match loss to Southwestern, putting their record at 0-1 in KCAC play and 1-2 overall to date.

Men’s Cross Country

Rylan Hincher took over the reins as Tabor’s head coach the week of the Bluejay’s home meet, helping recruit one of Tabor’s biggest classes to campus this fall. The men now boast a team of 11 runners. The BlueJays have started off strong finishing second at McPherson and Kansas Wesleyan and fourth at the Cottonwood Challenge, which was their home meet.

Tabor is poised to finish much higher than their ninth-place conference finish last year, eyeing a spot in the top three.

Women’s Soccer

Tabor’s squad of 26 players took the field in their first match against Kansas Wesleyan, one of the top teams in the conference. After leading for most of the contest, Tabor dropped a heartbreaker on the road in overtime 2-1, but a week later earned a dominating win over McPherson, 3-1. After dropping their next two contests, they claimed a 2-0 shutout win at Southwestern. The Bluejays are currently 2-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play, good enough for a tie for sixth place in the KCAC.

SHAW: Is there a story about any of the above that you can share?

ENS: “When the scenario planning committee determined that the former Salem Hospital might be a good location for isolation, we approached the city of Hillsboro regarding the idea. They took no time

at all to respond with a ‘yes’ and did whatever they could to help prepare the facility. The willingness of the Mennonite Disaster Services to assist in getting the building ready was a blessing and inspiring. I learned to appreciate the relationship we have with both our community leaders and our community as a whole. The willingness to come together and tackle the most difficult situations made it not only tolerable but planted the seeds of opportunity.”

Tabor Together is more than a slogan. It’s been our inspiration, experience and motivation to pull in the same direction in this 2020 defining moment.

Lifelong Learning to Expand Program Access to Nationwide Tabor College announces plans for an innovative approach to the Lifelong Learning program during the 2020-’21 school year.

attending. This new possibility could link together old and new friends from Hillsboro to Fresno, Fairview, Mountain Lake, Enid and Lenoir.

COVID-19 interrupted spring and fall 2020 plans, and as a result provided an opportunity to think creatively about our next season of program offerings. In fact, because of the pandemic, Tabor will offer Lifelong Learning virtually this year, allowing participants to join from the safety of their homes. This format will also enable friends and alumni from a broader geographic area to benefit from the programming.

As the planning continues at Tabor for this new rollout of a virtual Lifelong Learning, participants can have some time to assure access to an adequate computer, internet connection, speakers and microphone.

Signup will begin in January 2021 once all the details are finalized.

Topics and registration as well as a payment process will be available for the Lifelong program options. Once registration and payment are received, Tabor will send participants an email that includes information about how to link to the Lifelong Learning sessions.

Dr. Curtis Funk (g’65), 77, of Vancouver, B.C., died Sept. 17, 2020.

After graduating from high school, Curtis convinced his parents to let him attend Tabor College where he got involved in singing in the choir, piano lessons, and joining the band after a few bassoon lessons. While at Tabor, Curtis met Lois Lepp from Bakersfield, Calif., and they married on June 19, 1966, and moved to Denton, Texas, for his graduate studies in music education. In 1967, they moved to Alberta where he taught high school music but after one year, Fresno Pacific offered Curtis an opportunity to develop the instrumental music program. Curtis taught at FPC from 1968 through 1984. In 1973, he earned his doctorate in music education from Indiana University. In 1984, Curtis and his family moved to Wheaton, Ill., where he assumed the music education area chair in the Conservatory of Music at Wheaton College and taught there for 23 years, continuing to guide, mentor and care for many. He concluded his professional life as interim dean of the Conservatory in 2008. As a teacher and colleague, he is remembered for his kindness, winsomeness and humor. Throughout his adult life, Curtis was involved in church music, serving as choir director, arranger, and pianist in numerous churches. Curtis committed his life not only to God, music and the church but also to his family.

Bev Wiebe (g’78), 64, of Hesston, Kan., died at her home Sept. 14, 2020.

After graduating from Garden City High School in 1974, she studied at Tabor College, majoring in elementary education. In 1982. Bev began a program at Kansas State University in child and family development, earning a master’s degree in 1985. Upon graduating, Bev moved to Reba Place, in Evanston, Ill., and began a counseling service with a colleague.

In 2000, she returned to Kansas and continued family counseling first in Florence, Kan. and later in Hesston, Kan.

Marquis Leauma (g’11), 32, of San Marcos, Calif., died in a car crash Sept.

13, 2020, in Tutuila, American Samoa. After graduating from Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, he played football at Palomar College, then transferred to Tabor College, graduating with a degree in psychology. Marquis, who earned a master’s degree from Argosy University in clinical psychology, had just submitted his paperwork for his doctoral dissertation. He was working for the Department of Health in American Samoa as a behavioral health counselor and had helped create a substance abuse rehabilitation program.

Terry (Busenitz g’81), Rickel, 59, of Weatherford, Okla., died at her home Aug. 26, 2020. She was raised on her family’s farm near Newton and attended Berean Academy and Tabor College. At the time of her death she was working at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Terry enjoyed scrapbooking, cooking and making rolls, sewing, spoiling her grandchildren and spending time with family and friends.

J Richard Franz, (fs ’52), 89, of Brentwood, Tenn., died Aug. 27, 2020. In 1955, Richard married Edith Regier and they raised three children together and faithfully served in a church each place they lived. Maj. Franz retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1967 after serving in Korea and several U.S. postings and was subsequently hired by American Airlines, retiring as a Captain in 1991.

Brentwood became their home in 1966 where he enjoyed playing tennis and golf, visiting extended family, doing yard work, singing in choirs, traveling, studying the Bible, watching sports, and appreciating Mennonite history, food and heritage. Richard was a man who loved God, his family and all the friends

Dr. Merle K. Schroeder, (g’61), 80, of McPherson, Kan., died peacefully at home Aug. 10, 2020, surrounded by family. Merle, fondly known as “Doc,” practiced optometry in McPherson for 50 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, McPherson. He attended Bethel College in Newton followed

by Tabor College in Hillsboro, where he met his wife of 29 years, Darlene Suderman. They married in 1960 before heading to Texas where Merle graduated from the University of Houston. Merle opened his first optometric practice in McPherson in 1963, and later added offices in Buhler and Wichita.

In his early years, he was a member of the McPherson Kiwanis Club and served on various committees for the Kansas Optometric Association. He was also involved with VOSH International (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity), a now global mission organization that was founded in Hillsboro, Kan., by Dr. Franklin Harms.

Dr. Rudi Schnitzler (g’65), 81, of Kingston, Ontario, died Aug. 3, 2020, after more than four years in Providence Care Hospital where he was receiving treatment for broken leg complications. Rudi was a much beloved professor of musicology at Queen’s University (1971-96) where he taught on campus as well as in Venice, Vienna and the Bader Study Centre at Herstmonceux Castle.

Born and raised in Germany, Rudi originally settled in Winnipeg in the early 1960s, but soon moved to the USA to study at Tabor College, Ohio University and UNC Chapel Hill, where he earned his doctorate in 1971.

N E W S accepted Jesus as his Savior at an early age. He attended Tabor College for three years, returning home to work in Bakersfield, Calif. In 2016, he settled in Wichita and worked at Donovan Cadillac and at Range 54. Travis really loved people and had a passion to help those who were hurting.

Michael Glick (fs’73), 66, of North Hudson, Wis., died July 19, 2020, surrounded by his family. He attended Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., after high school and on Aug. 19, 1972, Mike married the love of his life, Julie Johnson. They were blessed with daughter Katie and son Olin. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, shooting and spending weekends with the family camping. Mike was a loving husband, father and grandfather, grounded in his faith, who is now experiencing the promises of God. Leon Franz (g’67), 76, died July 2, 2020, in Wichita, Kan. Gala Groening (g’74), age 67, died June 10, 2020, in Garden City, Kan., after a brave and courageous battle with Huntington’s disease. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1970 and Tabor College in 1974 with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. Gala taught elementary school at Peabody, Sublette, Satanta and Moscow, Kan. Gala earned her master’s degree in ESL in 2001 and moved back to Hillsboro in 2010 while working as a para for the McPherson, Kan., school system in special education until 2015.

Dr. Donald “Jim” Ediger, (g’66), of Lincoln, Neb., died March 3, 2020. Known by relatives as “Jim,” he grew up in Hampton, Neb., and after graduating high school attended Tabor College, majoring in biology. In his junior year he met his future wife, Lois Goertzen. They were married Aug. 20, 1966. While at Tabor, he was inspired by a local optometrist in Hillsboro to pursue an optometry degree, which he earned from Illinois College of Optometry. Jim was an optometrist in Lincoln, Neb,. for more than 40 years, taking a required two-year leave of absence early in his career to serve at Fort Riley, Kan. in the U.S. Army. He retired in 2012 and enjoyed his retirement years traveling, playing tennis and spending time with family.

Beverly Holmskog (ff’92) entered her heavenly home on October 19, 2020, at Palm Village in Reedley, Calif. She was born September of 1932 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

Beverly graduated from Linden High School, Taylor University with her bachelor of arts, and completed post-graduate degrees at Wichita State University and the University of Kansas. Beverly taught English at Tabor College for 20 years and following that, she tutored international students at Johnson County Community College and the University of Kansas for 18 years.

at churches in the various locations where they lived and led women’s Bible studies and started a prayer ministry for moms in Kingsburg, Calif.

Alumni News – 2000s

Nancy (Miller g’03) Phelps recently joined JE Dunn Construction as the Director of Community Impact, promoting corporate and employee engagement in the communities where we live, work and build. Nancy will work with the Community Impact team to lead philanthropic efforts and community involvement. Previously, she managed the KC Chamber’s major investor relations and national/local affinity programs. A 17-year veteran of the nonprofit world, Nancy is also a recent member of the Centurions Leadership Program.

Catherine Seals (g’07), YMCA Farha Sports Centers program director, has steadily climbed the ranks within the YMCA and was recently promoted to senior program director at the Farha Sports Centers. That means if your child is playing youth sports through the YMCA, Seals is in charge of it. Other News Mark Standiford (f) Wichita Sluggers Academy owner since 1995. No one has played a bigger role in the development of baseball players in the Wichita area over the past three decades than Standiford, Catherine Seals who built the 50,000-square-foot facility on Ridge Road. Standiford helped make Sluggers the premiere youth team to play for in Wichita and although he has since moved on to be the Tabor baseball coach since 2008, his work lives on in the Wichita baseball community. Sluggers is still one of the top youth clubs in Wichita, now also for softball players. What is the Tabor Fund?

The Tabor Fund provides support to students through scholarships and textbooks, as well as support for operational expenses.

The Tabor Fund goal this year is $1.1 million by June 30th. The dollars raised will assist our students and the College in the following ways: Scholarships $600,000.00 (55%)
