In this issue, you will find stories about a concert from Christian artist Jordan Feliz, the business department’s Week of Business, the cutting-edge research of science majors Tara Sheets and Taylor Morrow and seniors graduating this December.

Also in the issue are sports updates, including the men’s soccer team’s punching their ticket to nationals, the upcoming “Messiah” performance and students preparing for overseas trips during interterm.

It is amazing to see so many positive things happening on Tabor’s campus. At The Tabor View, we know that our campus is not perfect, and we do not claim that it is, but we cherish the opportunity to highlight what is going on here and what people are doing here.

WEEK OF BUSINESS

“How can we better prepare our students for the future?” This question proposed by Dr. Melinda Rangel sparked what would become the Tabor College Week of Business.

Tabor College’s Week of Business was a two-part event that was hosted from Oct. 28 through Nov. 5, with workshops held Oct. 28, and a job fair held Nov. 5. The second part consisted of entrepreneurs speaking to students Nov. 2, 3 and 4.

The job fair idea stemmed from a conversation that Rangel had with junior Jazmin Sandoval about finding jobs and internships.

Rangel consulted other Tabor business professors, and they decided to host a job fair with 30 employers from Kansas and the surrounding states.

Rangel had the idea to hold workshops teaching students necessary skills for the job fair, including giving an elevator pitch, dressing for success, writing a resume and choosing a career.

Several students in Rangel’s Entrepreneurial Experience class completed an assignment involving inviting guest speakers to come speak to business students at Tabor.

These students then came up with a plan to invite three different guests to come speak at Tabor, namely Dustin Galyon, Aaron Dixon and Jocelyn Galicia Powell.

Each night had a meal, prizes and time for the guests to share about entrepreneurship.

The meals were catered by The PickUp Line, Chick-fil-A, and a Marion taco truck. Prizes included gift cards to various Hillsboro businesses and a MacBook for students that attended all three nights.

The culmination of the Week of Business was the job fair, where students were able to network with prospective employers who work in different areas of business and learn about potential employment opportunities.

After the job fair, employer feedback was very positive about the professionalism displayed by the Tabor students, and they displayed interest in returning for a job fair again next year.

Rangel said she thinks Tabor can conduct the job fair every year for all Tabor students in conjunction with Celeste Worthy, Tabor’s newly hired director of career services.

The three nightly events were a one-time class assignment, but students have expressed interest in doing it again.

DINO DIAZ SPOTLIGHT

Let’s play a game called “Guess the Person!” Who currently works at Tabor that used to be a musician, world traveler and assistant winemaker?

It is Dino Diaz! You may recognize Diaz as the service manager in the cafeteria. He will always ask students what ways the cafeteria can improve to meet the requests of the students.

Hailing from Illinois, Diaz attended Ottawa University to play soccer for one year after high school. At Ottawa, he realized college was not for him, and went back to Illinois.

After a few years in Illinois, he moved to Kentucky to help his aunt and uncle with their resort. He worked there for a couple years before going back to college to study philosophy.

Through his time as a student, he continued to work in the food services before becoming a traveler.

“About that time, I’ve decided that I wanted to just travel because I have spent some time in multiple places and was really excited about it,” said Diaz. “I had enough experience in food service that I could go anywhere and get a job.”

This led him to northern California for several years. During his time in California, music captivated his interests.

He decided to move back to Illinois to start a couple bands with his hometown friends.

Playing music was paying well enough for him

to just focus on music for several years.

“The hours involved in (music) was not conducive to a normal life,” said Diaz, adding how it became too exhausting to continue that career path.

Colorado was the state he conquered next in which he was accepted as an apprentice to become a vineyard manager and assistant winemaker for the next seven years. This became his favorite job.

Through his lifetime, he has lived in eight states, including Colorado, California, Iowa and Kentucky.

“If I had to pick a favorite state I’ve lived in, it would have to be Oregon,” Diaz said, adding that in Oregon, you could experience many different weathers throughout the state.

From all this experience, Pioneer food services eventually led Diaz and his wife, Heidi, to Tabor College, and he has been here for seven years.

HILLSBORO STUDENTS OVERCOME STIGMA

For some students, attending college is a chance to venture out of the town in which they grew up and to gain new experiences as they pursue higher education. For other students, attending college in the town that you graduated high school from is a unique experience.

“I don’t think Tabor would be Tabor if it were somewhere else,” said Abigail Sechrist, senior. “When I was graduating from high school, I thought that I wanted to go to Tabor, but wished it were somewhere else. Now, I think that Hillsboro is what makes Tabor special.”

Caleb Rempel, junior, felt a lot of pressure from Hillsboro to not attend Tabor.

He said a lot of people see it as settling. He even had one person tell him, “You could’ve done so much better.”

Sechrist said, “Part of me wanted to get out of Hillsboro, just because of that stigma.

I felt like God was calling me here and to go somewhere else would have been disobedient.”

Sophomore Olivia Jury received mixed reactions from others when they learned of her college decision.

“When I told people I was coming to Tabor, most people were excited for me, but a couple of people were not happy about it,” she said.

Mallory Ediger, sophomore, looked at many more schools than Tabor. When praying for a college, Ediger felt called to a smaller school.

She almost went to Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Ediger realized she did not feel any peace with the decisions she was making until she decided she wanted to go to Tabor.

“It was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and I knew that peace came from God,” said Ediger.

Rempel said, “Peers are usually a bit confused why we would want to stay in Hillsboro because it is so small. But we are able to help people navigate life here.”

Each of these students have a heart for Hillsboro. Regardless of the downsides to going to college in their hometown, they are thankful to be in their home community for a couple years before life takes them elsewhere.

MORROW AND SHEETS RECEIVE 2021 HOPE SCHOLARS AWARD

Success is often accomplished by the work that is put in behind the scenes, or in other words, within the lab. Senior Taylor Morrow and junior Tara Sheets have been selected to receive the Hope Scholars Award for their collaborative research with Dr. James Titah, assistant professor of chemistry.

“Although we have not discussed an official title for our research, it will be something along the lines of, ‘The Synthesis and Characterization of Schiff Bases from Amino Acids and their Metal Ligand Complexes,’” said Morrow.

Titah first began researching this topic and came to several conclusions. Morrow and Sheets are taking the research a step further to determine if any of their results could potentially be used in pharmaceutical research or medications.

“Through this research, we are hoping to find a new way that medications, specifically insulin, can be delivered into the body orally,” said Sheets.

Both Morrow and Sheets said they

were interested in this research area because of their future endeavors. Morrow will be attending pharmacy school following her graduation in May, and Sheets also plans to attend medical school after graduation.

When Morrow and Sheets are not attending class, studying or participating in their extracurricular activities, they are in the lab completing their individual tasks. They each spend about two to four hours in the lab during each week to accomplish their set goals.

“By the end of this research, I hope to have written a research paper that is publishable, if not before I graduate, then following my graduation,” said Morrow.

As the two women work toward their goal of publication, they plan to use this scholarship to fund their necessary tools.

“We will use this scholarship towards purchasing chemicals for the synthesis of our products and creating our final poster for presentation of our work,” said Sheets.

CROSS COUNTRY

by Sam Buller The Tabor cross country teams finished out their seasons at the KCAC meet. Coming into the meet, the men were ranked fourth and the women were tied for third.

The men’s team finished fifth, led by Caden Cunningham who also finished 12th overall and qualified for NAIA nationals held Nov. 19 in Vancouver, Washington. The women’s team finished fourth, with the team achieving many personal bests. Combined with the fifth-year seniors due to COVID-19, the conference field was heavily contested.

Head Coach Rylan Hincher said that the season was a good one but “We are continuing to raise the bar.” He also said that both teams have a lot of young blood that can improve.

As the teams move into the track season, Hincher said he is sure that the group will continue to improve and is “Going to be really good for a long time.”

GOLF

by Millie Sechrist The Tabor golf teams wrapped up their fall season with five matches and the KCAC match play

tournament, where the men placed eighth and the women placed ninth.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are fairly young, but they are excited about where they are at and see lots of potential for what is to come.

“I am really looking forward to how our team is going to improve as we go into the spring season,” said junior Lauryn Paradez. “We had the fall to warm up, so now I am looking forward to how the team can grow both as individuals but also as a team.”

The team is focusing on the mental game in preparation for their season. They are working to block out all the distractions, focusing and centering themselves before hitting their shot.

TENNIS

by Destiny Cooper The Tabor women’s tennis team had a strong fall season, with every woman on the team making a huge impact on the team’s success so far. The team made history by beating NCAA Division II team, Fort Hays State University, and advancing three women past the first round in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournament.

“I’m looking forward to how the team

matches up with the rest of the KCAC and the goal is to win the league and make the playoffs,” said Head Coach Luke Rencher.

The men’s team had a great fall season as well. Two standout athletes, Noe Hauschildt and Mickel Alexander, have been holding the top two spots on the team. Coach Rencher said he is looking forward to two important players returning, Raul Chan and Mateo Garcia.

The goal for the men’s team is to “make playoffs and upset the top schools in the conference to make nationals,” Coach Rencher said.

VOLLEYBALL

by Shea Sutherland The Tabor volleyball team wrapped up their regular season matches and competed in the KCAC tournament on Nov. 12 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The women had a promising regular season, posting a 10-2 KCAC conference record. Their overall record is 16-11, and they finished with a fivegame winning streak.

Senior night took place on Nov. 6. The ladies swept Oklahoma Wesleyan University 25-17, 25-15, 2725 to conclude conference play.

This year’s seniors that were honored during senior night were Haylee Barta, Kami Steinbacher, Taylor Morrow, Melody Valencia, Taylor Quiring, Taylor Burns, Olivia Duerksen and Brittney Hiebert.

The team defeated Oklahoma Wesleyan 3-0 in the KCAC tournament quarterfinals. Their season then ended in the semifinals with a 0-3 loss to McPherson.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Tabor women’s soccer team’s regular season came to an end with their 0-2 loss on senior day to Friends University. In October, the Jays

recorded four wins, three ties and the one loss to Friends.

During a seven-game span of four wins and three ties, the Bluejays played great defense, shutting out their opponents and not allowing a goal during that span.

Finishing fifth in the conference at 6-3-3, the team continued into the postseason and played against familiar foe Kansas Wesleyan. Their postseason run was short lived, losing this heartbreaking first-round matchup 0-1.

With seven seniors leaving the program, the team is looking forward to next season and to carrying the success from this year to next year.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Tabor men’s soccer team is advancing past the KCAC tournament for the fourth time in school history, with the previous occurrences in 1960, 1961 and 2002.

The Bluejays ended the regular season with a 10-6-1 overall record and a 9-2-1 KCAC record, finishing second overall in the conference. Big, shutout wins came over McPherson, 2-0, and Friends, 3-0.

In the conference tournament, the Bluejays defeated Southwestern and Sterling, both by 2-1 scores.

The Bluejays then faced Oklahoma Wesleyan, who previously beat Tabor 6-0, in the KCAC championship game and lost 1-2.

The Bluejays will play Nov. 18 in the opening round of the NAIA National Tournament.

“It’s been the best year that I could ever imagine,” said senior Will Boney. “Going to nationals and doing all this stuff means the world to me and all the other seniors.”

CHEER

by Danielle Allison Throughout the fall, the Tabor cheer team has continued to bond in a great way and loved creating a fun atmosphere in the crowds during football games. The Tabor cheer team wrapped up cheering for football on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Looking forward to basketball season, the cheer team is excited to cheer on the men’s and women’s teams in a new environment.

This spring, the cheer team will be hosting open gyms. The open gyms will be a time for Tabor students who are interested in cheerleading to come and practice with the team.

Coach Krista Matlock said that the cheer team has had a great spirit this fall; she is excited to watch the team continue to learn and grow.

FOOTBALL

by Destiny Cooper The Tabor College football team has had a very up and down season so far. They currently have a record of 3-8, losing 14-7 to St. Mary’s on senior day, Nov. 13.

Despite the struggles the team has had, they have seen a lot of individual successes across the team, with many players winning multiple KCAC player of the week awards throughout the year.

Freshman kicker Nathaniel Heilig has been part of one of the brightest spots for the Bluejays on special teams. He is currently second on the team in total points with 57.

“This year has not been easy, but we’ve learned to adapt and persevere through tough times and always look to get better,” said Heilig.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS

ABBY BERGGREN

Abby Berggren, a senior from Towner, Colorado, will be graduating in December.

Berggren major is elementary education with a minor in English speakers of other languages (ESOL). As an education major, she is currently student teaching in Peabody at Peabody-Burns Elementary School.

At Tabor, she has been a part of the cross country, track and field and tennis teams, TeamKid at Parkview MB Church, and CHUMS. She has enjoyed making friends, being involved in three sports and being influenced by both Joanne Loewen and Emily (Kemling) Dickinson.

“I enjoyed having the experiences that I

don’t think I would have had at another school, like working for the campus,” Berggren said, adding that she does not think that she would’ve been bold enough to get a campus job if she was not at Tabor.

The biggest lesson she has learned while being at Tabor is to have self-motivation.

“I’ve learned I need to pursue my dreams and goals by myself to be self-motivated to do those things because nobody else is going to do that for me,” said Berggren.

She said God has been faithful during her time at Tabor and will continue to do so as she plans her future. She will marry her fiancé, Josh Gaede, in the summer of 2022.

Andre Renteria is well known around Tabor’s campus. Whether people know him as the star running back or as the great person that he is, he is a perfect depiction of a Tabor College student-athlete.

Renteria moved to Hillsboro from Denver, Colorado, after a stint at Division II school, Black Hills State University, and he is a business marketing major.

“I plan on finding a job using my degree, alongside trying to continue playing football for a little bit longer,” said Renteria.

Renteria is a star on the football field

He was also named a KCAC scholar athlete for the 2021-2022 season.

“The coaches took me in and helped me out so much, giving me a lot of freedom on the field,” said Renteria. “Being around the coaches and the team has changed my life while I’ve been here at Tabor.”

Tabor will miss Renteria in a huge way, and we all wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.

TABOR CHOIR AND COMMUNITY PERFORM MESSIAH

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many events in the 2020-2021 school year to be delayed or even cancelled. One such event was the performance of George Handel’s “The Messiah,” which has become a traditional performance for Tabor’s fine arts department.

Arts Director Greg Zielke expected the concert would likely be canceled, but was disappointed nonetheless. He suspected that even if they had gone ahead and performed, people would have been hesitant to attend.

MISSIONS CLUB SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

The sole purpose of Tabor’s Missions Club service projects is to “Serve in the community and benefit others in a way that glorifies the Lord,” said club president Lindsay Rader.

The Missions Club values servitude for overseas missions as well as for our own community, so the club has participated in many service projects.

Last year, they served at Main Street

In March 2021, it was confirmed that the choir would be able to perform “The Messiah” the next school year. The community has offered much positive feedback and approximately 30 community members will be joining the students to perform.

Even after conducting the piece numerous times, “...working on it again always clicks and reawakens my passion for it,” said Zielke.

The performance will be Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts and will feature an offering during an intermission of the performance. The offering will be going to the Hillsboro Area Ministerial Alliance to help those in need.

Director Zielke finds this offering to be another way to reference the original performance of “The Messiah,” as it was originally performed to raise money for an orphanage. On top of the offering, guests can also bring non-perishable food items to donate to a food bank.

As the performance date grows closer, Zielke said he hopes that all who attend are able to enjoy this timeless classic, because no matter how many times he gets to present the piece, “the music withstands the repetition.”

Ministries in Hillsboro where they cleaned out the basement to prepare it for remodeling, tore down the old playground to build a newer model, and discarded or relocated larger appliances. This semester they served at New Hope Homeless Shelters in Newton, Kansas.

“We had a great time preparing, serving and eating breakfasts with the staff and residents of the shelter,” Rader said.

Next semester, the Missions Club plans to visit Main Street Ministries again and serve in any way they can. As the club prepares for a new semester, they hope to participate in at least two service projects and host an event every month, such as having missionaries speak at meetings or participating in various service projects.

“We are excited to see where God will call us to serve next semester,” Rader said.

LITTON PASSES SP&D LEADERSHIP BATON

Every Wednesday students gather in the historic church to take a break from their busy schedule to worship together at Share, Prayer and Dare (SP&D).

As a junior, Mariah Litton accepted the role of leading SP&D. She said she felt called to go into worship ministry and was excited for this opportunity to grow in this area where she is passionate.

As the leader of SP&D, Litton not only leads worship on Wednesday nights, but she also does a lot of work behind the scenes like putting a team together, choosing songs, scheduling speakers and organizing different events.

“As I was stepping into this role, I was a little stressed about it,” said Litton. “I knew in advance I was going to be taking it over, but…I didn’t get very much training before I was put into it.”

Litton has now been the leader of SP&D for one and a half years and has not only seen growth in herself but also in the ministry.

“When I took on the position, I was not confident at all in my worship leading ability,” said Litton. “Throughout the first semester, there was a lot of growth to becoming comfortable with the position.”

One of Litton’s favorite parts about this role is getting to connect with her team and having prayer and devotion times together.

“As peers, I love that we are able to encourage each other and grow together, the team is always so ready to go and is like another family for me,” said Litton.

As Litton prepares to graduate in December of 2021, she is preparing to pass the role on to the next person.

“I am excited to pass it on,” said Litton. “SP&D has been (happening) on this campus for over 30 years, so it is exciting to be able to prayerfully choose someone else to take the position to grow the ministry.”

‘ETERNALS’ REVIEW

Marvel has been laying the groundwork for the next phase in their cinematic universe this year, from the three Disney Plus series to the return of theatrical releases with “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings.”

The next Marvel installment is “Eternals,” which was promoted as one of the biggest Marvel movies yet. It boasted Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao and some recognizable actors such as Salma Hayek, Richard Madden and Angelina Jolie.

Yet despite all the promotion and the all-star cast behind the film, I walked away from “Eternals” feeling confused instead of awestruck.

The plot of the movie covers an area from the comics that, unless they were knowledgeable in all things Marvel, leaves the average viewer questioning what is going on.

Another point that led to some unfulfillment was the characters themselves. Marvel introduces the Eternals as a team that has been guarding Earth from creatures called Deviants. The team is composed of 10 members, which leads to my issue.

Some characters feel flat, with only one characteristic or emotion that they maintain throughout the entire film.

There are a few who do get proper development, but when the majority of the team is left behind in this aspect, the good development becomes underwhelming.

The film does offer amazing visuals and a thrilling conclusion and also sets up future films by introducing new characters at the end. Overall, “Eternals” is a moderately enjoyable film, but it failed to live up to its hype and could leave some fans disoriented.
