Choir prepares for spring break Student Activities Board welcomes Jimmy Needham, tour of Oklahoma and Texas Trip Lee to campus as part of Grace Amazing tour that speak of God’s presence Jordan Giffin Opinion & Campus Life on earth in us and also passages
Each year, the Tabor College choir goes on tour during the week of spring break. This year’s tour, with stops in Wichita, Texas and several places in Oklahoma, has been given the theme of “Eternity in Our Hearts.” Director Brad Vogel has been a professor at Tabor for 15 years now. He said, “We are singing of the upward look we should have as believers—living with belief in the imminent return of Jesus Christ. The focus is also on God’s presence with us on this earth, in how we live and serve others.” Much of the New Testament was used as inspiration for the tour’s theme and focus. “The phrase ‘eternity in our hearts’ comes from Ecclesiastes 3:11; but we utilize many NT (New Testament) scriptures
that speak to our eternal hope,” Vogel said. The tour will include nine concerts in places such as First Mennonite Brethren in Wichita, Kan., Enid Mennonite Brethren in Enid, Okla., Balko High School and Crossroads Christian Church in Balko, Okla., Southwest Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Tex., and others. “I think it will be very enjoyable to sing at the seminary in Fort Worth,” Vogel said. “It is a School of Music and a central gathering spot for many Tabor alums in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, so I anticipate a good audience in a good venue.” Other fun stops that the choir will make on the trip include the 6th Floor Museum
Zach Bissell Editor-in-chief Famous Christian artists Jimmy Needham and Trip Lee were on Tabor’s campus on Saturday Mar. 3 for a concert. This concert was part of their “Grace is Amazing” tour. The Student Activities Board was able to have them make a stop here in Hillsboro for a concert that only cost students $5. The tandem arrived on campus around 11:30 am where some of the SAB members helped them unload their equipment before going to La Cabana for lunch. Senior Aaron Stepanek, junior Tim Roesch and sophomore Zach Trostel-Lopes escort-
ed Jimmy Needham, Trip Lee and the rest of the guys from the band to La Cabana. One crazy incident that Trostel-Lopes recalled was taking Trip Lee to Alco to buy some underwear. “I loved it,” said TrostelLopes, “Trip is an artist I look up too.” Trostel-Lopes was very excited to get to actually meet and hang out with one of his favorite artists. After lunch both Jimmy Needham and Trip Lee performed sound checks with the band. When the sound checks were over they ate dinner and had a devotional time by themselves before the show.
Andy Cherry started the show before Trip Lee came on stage. Jimmy Needham followed Trip Lee, and the two did a few songs together at the end of the concert. Because of the Tabor crowd, Jimmy Needham, Trip Lee and Andy Cherry came back on stage for an encore, which they said they never do. According to Trostel-Lopes they were impressed by the crowd and how excited they were during the concert. After the concert, everyone that performed signed autographs before heading back to the hotel to get some sleep before heading back on the road to continue the tour.

Together the tandem of Jimmy Needham and Trip Lee put on a great show for students of Tabor and people of the surrounding area. Tabor was blessed to have these two to include Hillsboro as part of their tour and spread the good news of Jesus Christ through their musical abilities.

What to do on tour? Allison Krehbiel, Logan Zielke and Ryan Loewen go shopping at Wal-Mart to pick up a few things while on choir tour last year. One of the several things that they found while out shopping was Rachel Goering who had found something delicious to eat. Learn where the choir will stop while on the tour above. What crazy things will the members of the choir do this coming tour when they head south to Oklahoma and Texas? Check with the choir members when they return to find out all kinds of good memories that they gain.

You may have noticed that Shin-Hee Chin and Doug Miller haven’t been on campus lately. These two professors have both been on sabbatical for the semester to work on pet projects they may not have been able to work on during the school year. “By definition they are taking time to restore and refresh,” said Frank Johnson, Vice President of Academics. “It’s a break from the daily routine of the profes-
sor.” Johnson’s office talks with the teachers about when they are eligible for a sabbatical and what they could do as a project during their time away from Tabor. Every seven years from the first year the teacher is hired, the teacher may get a year as a sabbatical. “Obviously one cannot just go on a full R&R or a year-long one,” said Johnson, “so what often occurs is that they often get away from the routine with cer-

The teachers can get full pay for half a semester of work, or half pay for a full semester. Both professors have chosen the half-semester sabbatical and will be back next semester. “I encourage faculty to take sabbaticals because they have
