Homecoming Musical --“She Loves Me” Director, Cast & Show

“The thing that surprised me… was the wealth of enthusiasm and support that the musical has garnered,” said Lauren Carlton, Tabor College director of theater. “That’s been really refreshing.”

Carlton is directing her first show for Tabor this fall semester. The show, titled “She Loves Me,” is a delightful musical romantic-comedy.

Carlton earned her degrees, a Bachelor’s in Journalism and a Masters of Fine Arts in Theater Performance and Pedagogy (Directing), from the University of Alabama and Texas Tech respectively.

She has faced a couple of challenges with the musical, with scheduling the Richert Auditorium as one.

“Because we share space with other organizations on campus,… we have to be mindful that it is a shared space,” Carlton said. “It wouldn’t necessarily be feasible to take in our whole giant set and have to move it every day.”

Carlton also commented on the difficulty of establishing balanced expectations for the show. She said one of the leading issues is the diverse cast of multitalented and involved students. She plans to make a home for such students of the arts.

“We are a school that is more isolated than some other universities,” Carlton said, “and I’d really love to see Tabor Theater become a haven for theater artists.”

Carlton said she plans to follow Tabor’s mission statement in this dream. The 14 members of the “She Loves Me” cast have been the first to see her plan in action.

Carlton said that she has enjoyed watching cast relationships develop. One of her favorites is a comedic relationship in a truly hilarious scene at a café.

“I’m really enjoying this growing relationship between the waiter and the busboy,” she said. “It’s a quirky and unique relationship that I don’t think we originally planned for, but it’s turned out to be this happy accident.”

She said that this relationship complements the more mature relationships in the show.

The mature relationships of the romance are well balanced with humorous acting throughout the show; almost every scene contains some hilarious comment or nonverbal charade. From intentionally dropped objects to intentionally dropped insults, the show keeps its audience laughing.

Though full of hilarity, the parfumerie in Hungary in which the show is set is also bursting with romance, intrigue and betrayal.

The show will run from Friday, Oct. 17 through Sunday Oct. 20, and tickets are available at tabor.edu/tickets.

The Band is Back Under New Direction

A brand new year and a brand new concert season is here! Under the direction of the new professor of music, Dr. Christopher Teichler, the fall concert will be Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Richert Auditorium.

Teichler said he looked at what had been done in previous programs and chose music pieces that would have similar difficulty as before, along with pieces that were flexible. He said he chose songs that were not only lyrical in nature but were a familiar part of pop culture.

Teichler said he hopes the audience will enjoy the concert. He wants to give a sense of pride for the students in both the band and other music programs, showing that as a band they’re versatile and that the band program is thriving and will continue to grow.

So, who is Dr. Chris Teichler? Teichler is originally from the Chicago area. Before Tabor, Teichler taught at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned his doctorate at Northwestern University in musical composition.

He applied at Tabor because it’s a Christian liberal arts college that is focused on the person as a whole, which reminds him of his own undergrad roots. He said he also likes that Tabor balances arts, athletics, and academics.

His favorite piece to play is “The Planets” by Gustov Holst and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

Teichler may be able to roll with the classical music folks, but he’s also a huge sports fan-- particularly the Chicago Bears. He plans to keep moving the band program forward by recruiting more students, both music majors and non-music majors.

Additionally, he plans for more ensembles to be incorporated into the band program. Teichler said he wants to encourage alumni to return to the pep band and symphonic band for performances. Teichler is glad to be conducting again as he wasn’t conducting at his previous school, and Tabor provided the perfect opportunity for him.

Professor Looney Profile

With the departure of Dr. Jessica Klanderud, a new history professor was hired. That man is Garrett Looney. Looney is originally from El Dorado, Ark., though he studied and taught at Oklahoma State University.

Looney said he chose Tabor because it is a Christian college, and he wanted to be closer to family. He is earning his doctorate in history and specializing in American Religious History, and his research field is Protestant Christian missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries.

In line with his research field, Looney’s favorite area of history is how Protestant missionaries’ global experiences influence their home cultures. He said he wants to let the student body know that he is approachable and can talk about different things like history, philosophy and college football, especially regarding his favorite team: the Razorbacks.

Looney wants to help students and learn alongside them, encouraging them to explore the history

program. He said he wants to maintain the current history department but wants to add more robust American Religious History classes.

Additionally, Looney also said he plans to involve alumni by forming a history club and allowing them to speak about how they use their history degree. Other classes Looney wants to add include themed classes based on topics such as the Civil Rights Movements and Gender Rights Movements. He said he is thrilled about being able to serve as a professor and walk with students while wrestling with complicated history.

Social Justice Club

The Social Justice Club is run by students to raise awareness as well as funds for disadvantaged groups of people.

“Our theme word for the year is freedom,” said President Hannah Funk, “so we are focusing on events that will relate to this. Freedom from trafficking, freedom from poverty, freedom from domestic abuse and violence.”

The club is involved in many different events around campus to raise awareness for various injustices in the United States. These events include Shanty Town, “Take Back the Night,” and an A21 5k.

The goal of the Shanty Town event, held from 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, to 7 a.m. the next morning, was to provide some insight into the lives of homeless people.

Students were invited to the hammock lounge to create shelter out of cardboard boxes and duct tape. This event allowed students to understand how the homeless live and walk in their shoes for a night.

Funk estimated that roughly 15 students helped set up for this event. About seven people started the night in the structure, and five of those seven lasted the entire night.

This is the first year that Tabor held this Shanty Town event, and the goal for the Social Justice Club is to involve more people in years to come.

“Take Back the Night” is an organization that strives to end domestic abuse and sexual violence through awareness events and initiatives.

In correlation with this organization, the Social Justice Club organized an event that ran from Monday, Sept. 30 until Sunday, Oct. 13 which allowed students to share their stories, support survivors and write words of encouragement. These messages were written on items of clothing that hung from clotheslines between the Student Center and the Lohrenz building during the 14-day event.

The dates for this event were extended one week to provide more opportunities for students to write these messages.

The A21 5K is an event that coincides with a national event run by the nonprofit organization A21. This event hopes to eradicate human trafficking and human slavery by awareness, intervention and aftercare of those involved in human trafficking.

The Social Justice Club will be hosting a local 5K run, walk or bike on Oct. 20 here in Hillsboro. All of the funds raised from this event will go directly to the A21 organization to help combat the effects of human trafficking.

The Social Justice Club invites both Tabor College students and community members to participate in this upcoming event.

**New Solution: Renaming Things Solves Everything**

“Once I realized starvation is an unhelpful term, not eating became way easier,” said Maddie Jenoric, 18, a college freshman. “I’m happy to be able to fast every day.”

Maddie and many other people have found a better life in a surprising new trend: if you rename something, it becomes totally different and better.

Maddie’s glowing smile illuminates her emaciated form. It’s an excellent thing that a positive attitude is all that’s necessary to sustain life.

Her ideal outlook is made a necessity because of her scheduling conundrum, one shared by a crowd of others.

“I don’t get a chance to eat most days ‘cause I’m so busy with classes and extracurriculars,” Maddie said.

“Luckily this renaming thing really works… I’m never hungry anymore.”

Ironically enough, she’s missing out on the five-star meals served in her freshly renamed Dining Hall.

“Now that the name change has taken effect, it’s like the food completely transformed to match a new, higher standard,” said Austin Auveraj, a re-titled sous chef in the re-christened dining hall.

“We renamed the food…it doesn’t matter, we didn’t change the recipe,” said Austin. “It’s just inherently better.”

The renaming craze has even spread as far as college classrooms. Professors have realized that homework

suddenly becomes meaningful if you call it personal enrichment; tests are no longer stressful if instead referred to as opportunities.

“My students were really struggling to find time to complete assignments,” Dr. Droel said. “Now they’ve come to understand how enriching the study of aglet development is.”

Dr. Droel, professor of Sneaker Studies, is ecstatic about how calm and ready his students are for their next opportunity. “They’ve all flipped the switch and are ready for the… opportunity,” he said. “They’re not even worried about the fact it’s worth 98.7% of their grade!”

**Opinions on Halloween**

It’s October, which means that my favorite holiday is coming up. What isn’t there to love about Halloween?

The candy, haunted houses and the cooler weather are only a few of the things that come to mind.

However, Halloween has some interesting origins, and some people choose not to celebrate the holiday because of it.

Halloween originated in the Celtic holiday of Samhain. During Samhain, the Celts lit bonfires and wore costumes. They believed that during this day, the line between the living and the dead became blurred, so they used costumes to scare the dead away. They’d also tell fortunes by using the ghosts.

During the eighth century, Pope Gregory III decided that Nov. 1 should be All Saints’ Day to honor the dead. All Saints’ Day absorbed some of Samhain’s traditions, and soon Samhain became All-Hallows Eve and eventually evolved into the Halloween we know and love today.

Despite the pagan origins of Halloween, it should be celebrated. It’s a fun holiday, and not only do kids love it, but adults do, too. Halloween doesn’t represent what it used to, and the celebration shouldn’t be seen as something that represents evil.

While it is important to remember that Halloween has a very different origin, use it as a day to spend time with your family and friends and just have fun and relax.

SPORTS UPDATES Volleyball

The Tabor volleyball team has faced a lot of unfamiliarity this season. Under the helm of new head coach Marshall Goenawan, the Lady Jays have played just one game on their home court in their first 21 games.

Three of those games were against teams ranked nationally in the top 20.

The grueling schedule of the first months didn’t deter the Lady Jays. In fact, it sparked their three-game win streak to kick off the month of October.

The Lady Jays took down Avila at home on Oct. 1 and later swept Sterling on the road to give them a conference record of 3-1. This record ties them for third in the KCAC rankings with an overall record of 11-13.

“I feel like the competition we faced early on has helped us see a glimpse of the potential we have as a whole,” said senior setter Samantha Smith.

The volleyball team has a lot to look forward to, including a Senior Night matchup versus Bethel College on Nov. 2.

Football

In blowout fashion, the Tabor football team kicked its season off with a 40-20 win against Southwestern Assemblies of God University. The Jays then fell in back-to-back losses, knocking them off track in their quest for a KCAC title. But with a 35-28 victory over Ottawa on Oct. 5, the Jays have new life, giving them an overall record of 3-3.

Their outstanding offensive showing versus Ottawa with 459 total yards, backed by a 292-yard performance by redshirt sophomore quarterback Trey McGee, has the Jays excited for the remainder of their season.

With a conference record of 2-3, the football team is sitting seventh in the KCAC. Their homecoming matchup on Oct. 12 features the University of St. Mary. Kickoff is at 2p.m. at Joel H. Wiens Stadium.

Golf

The Tabor College men’s and women’s golf teams competed in multiple tournaments in September. Both of the rosters are composed of freshmen and sophomores, except for one junior, Zach Gibson from Andover, Kan., on the men’s team. On the women’s side, the only returning golfer is Erin Morrison from Amarillo, Texas.

Both teams competed in the first-ever KCAC Match Play Championship at Salina Country Club. This tournament is a new format in which a match consists of one golfer on a team versus one golfer on another.

The women’s team led by freshman Valdisa Andov finished the tournament in a tie for seventh place. However, the competition was shortened due to weather conditions. The men’s team also finished seventh out of nine teams.

Tabor’s only match win belonged to Gibson.

The team continued their fall season at the Tabor Invitational tournament on Oct. 14-15 at Sand Creek Station.

Cross Country

Recently both the men’s and women’s teams traveled to Nebraska for the Hastings College Bronco Stampede Invitational. Both sides competed well. The women’s team finished sixth overall in the meet, led by Conangela Senior with a time of 20:36.76 and Emily Kemling with a time of 20:47.39.

Garett Kinsey led the men’s team with a time of 30:33.56, earning him a finish of 55th. Teammate Riley Ballou-Lyngstad came in roughly three minutes behind Kinsey, finishing 82nd. Having only four men’s runners for Tabor, they did not qualify to compete for the team competition.

Both teams improved from their first meet, continuing to improve upon their times at the Fort Hays University Meet in Hays Oct. 12 and into the rest of the season.

Swimming

The Tabor men’s and women’s swim teams competed at the Sam Freas Invitational in Edmond, Okla. on Sept. 12.

For the women, senior swimmer Michal Parris competed in multiple events, including the 50 and 100-yard freestyles, the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard IM. Senior Tassanee Sanchez also competed in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles. The women’s team did not have enough swimmers in the meet to compete in the relay races.

For the men, seniors Nick Bradley, Danny Smith and Jacob Rudolph competed along with sophomore Jonathan Austin in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays. Both relays placed 20th out of 23 teams with times of 1:38.40 and 1:53.21 respectively. These men also competed in individual events.

Both teams competed in the Sunflower Showdown at the Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka on Oct. 4, and their season continues into March of 2020.

Tennis

First-year coach Luke Rencher leads the Tabor men’s and women’s tennis teams. Both teams began their season in September at the Tiger-Jinx Invitational held at Southwestern College and Cowley County Community College. The two-day tournament gave Rencher a preview of the season to come, after which he said he was pleased with his team’s play and attitude during the tournament.

Recently both teams competed in matches against Division II Newman University. The Bluejays battled well. For the women, sophomore Kayla Roth registered the only win of the day for the Bluejays. Senior Tessa Isaac also had an excellent performance in no. 1 singles but ended up dropping a tough match. For the men, doubles team of Pierce Klaassen and Jean-Paul Fort lost a heartbreaker 7-6 in a tiebreaker set.

The men’s and women’s teams seek to build on their fall success and prepare for the spring season.

Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian stirred late in August, hitting closer to central Kansas than the Bahamian shores.

Seniors Dwight Rahming and Shannon Johnson felt the effects of their homeland’s suffering thousands of miles from the point of impact.

Dorian formed from a tropical wave that originated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. On its travels across the Atlantic, Dorian progressed from a tropical storm into a Category 5 Hurricane. Its path came into direct contact with the Bahamas. Dorian made landfall on the Abaco Islands with maximum sustained wind speeds of 185 miles per hour. This wind speed tied it for the highest wind speed ever recorded at landfall. The hurricane then progressed to Grand Bahama, where it showed similar intensity as on the Abaco Islands.

During the worst of the storm, Rahming said that he was nervous about the safety of his family. He is from Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. This area is lower on the map and did not suffer the harsh effects of Dorian like Grand Bahamas.

As of Oct. 1, Hurricane Dorian caused the death of at least 60 people and wounded many others. This number may still increase, as about 400 people are still reported missing. Dorian is by far the costliest

disaster in Bahamian history. It is estimated to have caused around $7 billion in property damage, a cost that may rise as repairs are made to many different structures on the islands.

Johnson, also from Nassau, said that some of his family members had some slight flooding from the excess rain of Dorian. Thankfully, the flooding was minor and did not cause much damage.

Rahming and Johnson both said that there are currently relief efforts in effect for the people of Grand Bahama and Abaco Islands. Numerous groups provide aid for the people who lost everything, such as the Salvation Army, Americares and Mercy Corps.

They provide food, water and generators to produce electricity. Many of the groups provide shelter for people whose homes have been damaged or destroyed, even helping to rebuild structures and connecting children back to their families that may have gone missing.

This relief effort will take a lot of time and money to get the islands affected by Dorian to get running again. It will take numerous donations and prayers for the people for the Bahamas to recover from this catastrophe.

Leaf

by Emily Crow A leaf on a tree is a simple concept.

The leaf gets its nutrients from a branch.

It may not fully see the big base that supports and brings life.

It only knows about the branch it’s connected to.

Much like with humans, we may not see the big picture and are not aware of God supporting and bringing us life.

Instead we look to what we know, like our parents and our elders.

God is what holds everyone together and keeps us strong.

There are times when we pull away from God and reject him.

We are the leaf that falls from the tree and withers.

It’s not long before we find out that we are nothing without God or our base.

A tree doesn’t say, “All the leaves left me so I will not have leaves again.”

The leaves return after the rough time and they thrive thanks to the trunk.

There will always be leaves on the trees, and the Lord will always welcome his children home.

A ‘Welcome’ Groundbreaking

The rise of the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts in 2017 blazed a beautiful trail for the addition of another new structure. The generosity of Chuck and Shari Flaming provided the funding for the Shari Flaming Welcome Center, currently being constructed west of the Student Center. The start of construction was celebrated with a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 25, and the building is set to be completed in 2020.

Changes in Food Service

Pioneer College Caterers, which provides food service at Tabor, has gone through several recent changes and will continue to change in the coming months. The largest change has come in the form of new management.

Rob Scott began his leadership role for Pioneer on Sept. 7, and he has had an immediate and positive impact on the department. Tabor has also welcomed a new assistant manager, Amanda Sien.

Scott and Sien have passion and a vision and for improving the food services at Tabor, with specific emphasis on the cafeteria. In addition to the caf, Scott also oversees services such as the Courtside Grill, concessions for sports and on-campus catering for special events which normally occur in the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts.

The most important element to bringing change to the cafeteria, according to Scott, is making sure the student voice is heard.

“My goal is to provide the food students want when they want it,” Scott said.

He has intentionally emphasized during his first month on the job. Scott has opened the line of communication by way of comment cards. Students can write down their comments and/or suggestions

which will be reviewed daily and responded to in a timely manner. Scott also encourages students to stop him in the cafeteria and share with him their reviews, ideas and suggestions.

Specific and tangible changes have also entered the cafeteria lately. Small updates in the layout and appearance of the cafeteria have improved seating capacity and overall made it a more inviting space.

Healthier food options have started with the fruit and vegetable groups. Fresh produce is now offered as opposed to frozen or canned produce. The sub sandwich station, which currently functions as a self-serve station, will soon be served by employees, similar to Subway.

Scott said he also plans to have complete turnover in terms of the menus that are served as opposed to simply tweaking the current menu options. Scott said he hopes to make strides on the new items sometime during the spring semester.

The entire Pioneer staff welcomes feedback-compliments as well as criticism-- from students to know how to improve. With new leadership and a heightened emphasis on the student voice, the caf is sure to continue development in the near future.

Tabor Nationally Ranked

The U.S. News Best Colleges began its annual rankings in 1985. The ratings are a collaboration of data from each educational institution that are given in a survey. The organization also grades schools by surveys. Faculty and administrators only give their opinions of schools outside of their own.

U.S. News Best Colleges placed Tabor in the top 50 in three categories. Tabor College was ranked sixth in “Best Undergraduate Teaching” and 24th in “Top Performers on Social Mobility.” Tabor also received a 49th placing out of 88 schools in the Regional College Midwest.

The award in the Social Mobility category is a magnificent achievement. Athletes from all different backgrounds come to Tabor College for an athletic

experience they’ve dreamed of since childhood.

Some students are automatically given a better opportunity to attend Tabor with cost and traveling.

“Top performers on Social Mobility,” gives underprivileged students a chance they may not have had without it.

Tabor placing 24th for Liberal Arts Colleges shows how much the college cares about the student body. The school wants everyone and anyone that can attend to better their own futures.

The honors from U.S. Best Colleges are a tremendous shoutout to the faculty’s commitment to their students’ successes. They pave the way for future ambassadors and students to grow in their faith and share with those around.

Rhubarb Market Update

Rhubarb Market is a local coffee shop located on the corner of Main and Grand in Hillsboro, owned by Tim and Alissa Unruh.

Tim, who works at Tabor in the Facilities Department, and Alissa are first-time Tabor parents this year to freshman Avery Unruh. Rhubarb Market was started by Tim as a business experiment with middle son Aidan and has gradually grown into what it is today.

Rhubarb Market is a unique place where one can experience peace, enjoying the drinks and pastries that are served in the friendly atmosphere.

Alissa said that she and Tim want to have and build relationships with everyone who comes through the doors, no matter who they are or where they come from.

In addition to this, a large emphasis is placed on bringing members of the Hillsboro community together with Tabor students.

“I have had people tell us that this is exactly what our community needed,� Tim said.

Whether Tabor students come to meet with a friend, to complete homework or just to buy a refreshing drink, they will leave encouraged.

Exciting times are ahead for Rhubarb Market. The Unruhs would like to expand their business hours in the future to provide more opportunities for interaction between Tabor students and community members.

They said they would also like to spotlight local talent by having live music performers and by displaying more art on their walls, which they would love Tabor students to take advantage of.

The future is bright, so journey over to downtown Hillsboro to experience all that Rhubarb Market has to offer.

Student Senate October Update

Student Senate has been working this fall toward building up the student voice and making our presence known throughout campus. Student Senate collects funds from student fees, compiling these fees into a budget meant for student utilization. We have funds for special requests, clubs and campus improvements, and a contingency fund specifically designed for student emergencies such as travel.

Our senate is comprised of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, publicist, nontraditional representative, representative atlarge and representative to the board as well as a representative for each class. Each member on our

team this year is looking forward to serving Tabor students and making positive impacts on campus.

This fall, we are working toward funding new water and ice machines for the Schlict and North Side of campus, and providing the snakes in the Science building new cages, thanks to last year’s senior gift. We have also funded this year’s clubs including science club, social justice club, film club and missions club.

All students are welcome to our weekly meetings at 6:30 p.m. each Monday in the student conference room below the cafeteria. We want to hear your voice and turn every idea into a reality, providing a positive impact on Tabor’s campus.

Prayer Room

Ryan Lee, Tabor’s campus pastor, is opening a prayer room for both students and faculty in the previous art room of the H. W. Lohrenz Building.

Tabor had a prayer room in earlier years but was not frequently used, and the college decided to offer the space to benefit Project Search.

Lee said that his “vision is to have a room and offer opportunities for students to get more involved in prayer on our campus… praying for our campus, praying for our community, and praying for the nations around the world.”

Because of his passion for prayer, Lee has been working on this prayer room and wants to encourage others to connect with God through its use. The hope is to offer different prayer events and hear ideas for these from students.

One event that Lee said he’s passionate about pursuing is a 24-hour day of prayer. He said that his hopes for this event would be “to have one hour time slots where people or groups of people could sign up to pray, and it would go all through the night.” Another option for both students and faculty with this prayer room may be the addition of weekly prayer groups.

Many students have shown interest in this prayer room, and it is expected to be used more than

the past prayer room due to the location and a greater student involvement. This prayer room is a great opportunity for students to grow in their faith through prayer and offer support to others.
