Welcome to a new calendar year and a new academic semester!

We at The Tabor View are ready to bring you the news and stories that accompany this fresh start.

If you have not noticed, the people of Tabor have both local and global influence. Our February Issue emphasizes this influence by highlighting two overseas Interterm trips and the celebration of the Lunar New Year.

Not only is Tabor local and global, it is also moving forward quickly. Two stories that illustrate this progress are the installment of a new academic calendar (without Interterm) and plans for new student housing.

On Jan. 15, Vice President of Academics Frank Johnson surprised Tabor students with an email informing them that this Interterm would be the last.

Johnson explained that Interterm made sense when it was instituted, but it no longer works either for those students who wish to work during breaks or for athletes who must return early in the summer.

Peggy Goertzen, director of the Center of Mennonite Brethren Studies, fondly recalls the various international trips she was able to experience during Interterm, including trips to Germany and Mexico.

“When Interterm was established in 1967, students called it marvelous and ingenious,” Goertzen said.

The one-course restriction of Interterm allowed students to enjoy college life and rest while still earning three credit hours. This also allowed students to experience

classes and subjects often unavailable to them during normal semesters.

Tabor was one of a few Christian colleges that decided to form an Interterm. As of this year, the only college besides Tabor still participating in Interterm was McPherson College, which also decided to end Interterm and create a new academic calendar.

While Interterm was a wonderful experience for many students and will be missed, the new academic calendar holds many exciting prospects for students. These include a full week of Thanksgiving break, a study day before finals each semester and two six-week online summer terms instead of one.

“I believe this will improve our ability to serve all students at all levels through this new comprehensive approach to an academic calendar,” Johnson said.

THE HISTORY OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery, and at the age of 20 he experienced many failed escape attempts from Edward Covey’s plantation. In 1838, however, he managed to escape the plantation and board a train to Harve de Grace, Maryland.

Douglass then traveled through Delaware to New York to the safe house of David Ruggles. He started attending Abolitionist movements, and became part of the American Anti-Slavery Society’s “Hundred Conventions” project by 1843.

He then traveled to England and delivered one of his most famous speeches, “London Reception Speech.” In 1847, he returned back to the States and became involved in the movement for women’s rights.

Douglass was a huge supporter of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency during the Civil War. But Douglass and Lincoln would later have a disagreement – Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which effectively ended slavery.

Douglass, however, was disappointed that the Emancipation Proclamation didn’t give formerly enslaved people the right to vote, even

after they fought alongside the Union Army.

After Lincoln’s assassination, the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments to the Constitution were passed.

Later, in 1868, Douglass supported the presidential candidacy of Ulysses S. Grant, who oversaw passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1871, designed to suppress the growth of the Ku Klux Klan.

Then, in 1888, Douglass became the first African American to receive a vote for presidency. Although he did not win the nomination, he remained an active speaker and activist until his death in 1895 from a heart attack while on his way home from a meeting with the National Council of Women.

Frederick Douglass’s legacy will always be a key part of Black History. He is remembered as a writer, speaker, abolitionist and activist for women’s rights.

He fought hard for the abolishment of slavery before and during the Civil War. We are forever grateful for the efforts and dedication of Frederick Douglass.

STUDENTS GAIN PERSPECTIVE ON GUATEMALA TRIP

Learning doesn’t happen in the classroom alone. A team of Tabor students completed Interterm internationally as they visited Guatemala for two weeks.

“Our trip was less of a mission trip and more of a learning experience,” said Lexzy Burnett, a junior studying psychology. “We learned about Guatmela’s culture when it comes to sex trafficking, human trafficking, their educational system, and the disparities that they are facing.”

The Guatemala team consisted of five students and Dr. Lara Vanderhoof, the instructor of record. In addition to Burnett, Elienei Mejia, Johnna Swiers, Natalie Ford, Kylie Klassen, and Lauryn Paredez joined together with Vanderhoof for a trip oriented around social work.

Although the trip was not mission focused, it consisted of both learning and serving, Vanderhoof said.

Junior Natalie Ford, studying social work, psychology and criminology, said, “We went there and we listened. This is something that was really important to them.”

Not only did the students serve through listening but they physically served by planting trees that would give long-term nutritional benefits.

“Our Tabor students were able to invest in this generation and future,” said Vanderhoof.

“Everyone is called to be a change agent.”

After immersing in Guatemala’s culture, the students walked away with new perspectives.

“You don’t realize how far we have come as a country in getting rid of the issue of racism when you see places like Guatemala,” said Burentt. “America has fought really hard for that, and they are just now beginning to fight.”

Ford said, “Everyone is united by something. We are united as a human race, and that is not defined by where we live.”

TABOR STUDENT INTRODUCES LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

On Monday, Jan. 31, students, faculty and community members gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year, which was Feb. 1. This event was put together by Tabor’s Multicultural Student Union and was inspired by freshman Jiahang “Barry” Ma. “Barry feels strongly about his Chinese culture and wants others to get to experience it,” said Lynette Bartsch, MSU sponsor.

Celebrating the Lunar New Year is a big part of Ma’s culture and has always been important to his family.

“Chinese New Year Party… is a symbol of unity and kinship. It can be seen as an Asian country’s Christmas time,” said Ma. “Tabor College also has a unique family… I felt like sharing what I have learned and what God has given us.”

The party consisted of two different activities: the dumpling-making party and the poster-making party.

Rob Scott, Tabor food service director, taught everyone involved how to

make the dumplings using wontons and filling provided by the cafeteria.

Bartsch said, “I really liked the festive atmosphere. While making dumplings…some people shared their experiences of going to and living in China.”

People who wanted to be involved in the poster-making party filled out a Google form before the event, and Ma created a poster with their name and favorite Bible verse translated into Chinese.

Ma said, “It can be understood as an encouraging note but with a bit more detail.”

The Lunar New Year celebration allowed Tabor students and faculty to celebrate a different culture and learn about something new.

“I love seeing people engaging with a whole new world of knowledge and lifestyle and also the history…,” Ma said. “It also challenges my knowledge and understanding of my own culture.”

TRACK & FIELD

GOLF

The Tabor men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at Pittsburg State and Washburn University Feb. 11-12. The distance medley relay team of Dillon Callaway, Caden Cunningham, Toby Penner and Nicolas Montoya demolished the school record and qualified for nationals with a time of 10 minutes 7.69 seconds, while William Colgin qualified for nationals in the triple jump.

Other national qualifiers include Vance Shewey and Dashaun Sanford in the high jump, Dillon Callaway in the 1,000 meter run and Caden Cunningham in the 3,000 meter run.

On Feb. 18-19, the teams competed in the KCAC Indoor Championships. The women finished eighth, and the men finished third.

“One of our biggest improvements this year has been the distance and middle distance races, with a big reason being Rylan Hincher, my assistant,” said Head Coach Dave Kroeker.

Hincher was named the Assistant Coach of the Year at the conference meet.

Both teams are winding down their indoor track season, as they prepare for the NAIA Indoor Championships and the outdoor season.

The Tabor men’s and women’s golf teams will begin their spring seasons in the coming weeks. Both teams will compete March 7-8 at Crestview Country Club in Wichita.

The tournament will be hosted by Friends University, and it will consist of two days of competition. Following the Friends University invite, Tabor will host in Hesston March 21-22.

“I have seen a lot of improvement, especially from the freshmen on the team,” said Head Coach Michael Jamieson. “I can really tell they have been putting in a lot of work in our indoor facility as well. I would love to see us narrow that gap between the three, four and five guys on the team.”

TENNIS

by Cody Meyer After a fall season in which the men went 1-1 and the women went 2-1, the Tabor tennis teams are ready to take on their spring seasons. The men come into the season picked to finish sixth in the KCAC preseason poll, while the women are expected to finish fifth. Both teams have started the spring season 1-2 in matches versus St. Mary’s,

Schreiner and Emporia State. The St. Mary’s women’s team was particularly tough competition, as they are ranked 15th in NCAA Division II. The men have six home matches on their schedule, while the women are scheduled to compete in Hillsboro seven times throughout the rest of the season. Each team looks to kick off KCAC play hosting Ottawa March 25.

The team traveled to Chickasha, Oklahoma, to play in the USAO NAIA Invitational February 18 & 19, but these games were canceled.

The Bluejays, now 1-4, will host Hastings Feb. 25.

CHEER

MEN’S BASKETBALL

With basketball season in full swing, the Tabor cheer team is keeping busy with games and different activities.

“We have such dedicated athletes who want to see the program grow and want to perform at a higher level,” said Coach Krista Matlock.

The cheer team plans to host open gyms in the spring for Tabor students and local high school athletes.

They will be able to practice with the team and see what Tabor cheer is all about.

“We are all just very excited to watch our team and this program grow…,” said Matlock. “We have great recruits and strong athletes who will be joining us in the fall.”

The Tabor College Bluejays have struggled since coming back from semester break, but they are continuing to fight through the season.

With the higher level of play in the KCAC conference, the Bluejays have struggled to keep up with the competition, winning just four of the last 14 conference games. But multiple good signs of spark are evident in the team.

Over the past two months, Montel Stewart and Kade Hemmert have shown strong outings. These include two 20-point games by Stewart, and two “double-double” performances by Hemmert.

With the end of the season coming soon, the men are sitting in 12th place in the conference at 6-18, after beating the McPherson Bulldogs 79-61 Feb. 19.

SOFTBALL

by Destiny Cooper Tabor’s softball team started their spring season Feb. 11-13 in Allen, Texas, at the SCS NAIA Invitational.

The Bluejays played two games on the 11th. The first game was against third-ranked University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, but Tabor fell short 2-5. But in the second game the Bluejays gained their momentum, winning 11-10 against Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Tabor then took on Baker University on the 12th, unfortunately falling short 6-9. Lastly, ending the tournament on the 13th, the Bluejays

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the Tabor women’s basketball team defeated Friends 57-45. This was a crucial win for the team, assuring that they will not fall farther than fourth in the conference rankings.

The varsity team is currently 18-5 in conference play and has an overall record of 21-7.

Other highlights of the varsity’s season include beating Kansas Wesleyan 70-67 in overtime and

defeating McPherson 70-57 on their home court.

In January, Sammy Jo Peterson and Kasey Rice both hit the milestone of 1,000 points in their careers.

The JV team currently has an overall record of 16-7 and are 12-1 in the KCAC. Highlights of the JV women’s season include beating Southwestern 103-35 at home and beating Neosho Community College 73-52.

The team will start KCAC conference tournament play Feb. 23.

BASEBALL

by Cody Meyer The Tabor Bluejays baseball season is off to a strong start after the Cajun Collision in Monroe, Louisiana, headlined by a 5-1 victory over seventhranked Indiana University Southeast.

The Bluejays also had a heartbreaking 1-2 walk-off loss against 12th-ranked Loyola University.

Strong performances from first baseman Cody Moore and pitchers Matt Fred, Mike Selleck and Preseason All-American Austin Seidel have helped the Bluejays to a 5-3 record through their first eight games.

As always, Head Coach Mark Standiford’s goals for the season remain the same: win the KCAC conference and reach the College World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

The Bluejays will kick off conference play with a big game at McPherson College March 1, followed by a three-game home series against Southwestern College March 5-6.

TUTORING CENTER FINDS NEW LOCATION

Beginning this spring semester, if you are looking for the student success office you will need to head to the H.W. Lohrenz Administration Building. The Student Success Office and Tutoring Center has moved from the library to the lower level of the Lohrenz.

“We were in a small space, and we see a large portion of our student body, and we see students constantly Monday through Friday, so we needed a bigger space,” said Erica Kruckenberg, director of Student Success, on the need for a new location.

Students will benefit from the change with the dedicated space specifically for

tutoring. Emily Ingalls, first-year experience adviser, said that giving students a safe space and a more consistent schedule, while making it easier to monitor is important.

The Lohrenz was the perfect space because of its centralized location in proximity to the residential halls and classrooms.

Tutoring will be available from Sunday through Thursday, from 1-3 p.m. and 7-10 p.m.

If you need tutoring in a class that is not listed on the schedule, go to tabor.edu/tutor and fill out a request form so Student Success can find tutors.

NEW RESIDENCE HALL UPDATE

Tabor has announced its plans for new student housing, hoping to start the construction process in May or June 2022.

“We wanted to build a sense of community along with a sense of security, and I believe we have done well in doing so,” said Terry Ens, director of facility operations at Tabor.

A major improvement that will benefit students is that every resident will have complete control over the heating and cooling systems in their room. Students will no longer have to switch a valve on a pipe

in order to adjust the heat like in the men’s quad.

“Each floor will have a lounge as well as places to study,” Ens said. The building will be completely secure, requiring a key card to access the rooms and lounges.

Tabor will slowly phase out the men’s quad and Cedar residence hall, as they have become more expensive to maintain as they age. This comes at a perfect time, as Tabor has recently seen record enrollment, requiring more housing than ever before.

PRESIDENT JANZEN GIVES EXAUDIO LECTURE

Tabor President David Janzen spoke at the Exaudio lectures on Wednesday, Feb. 2, and Thursday, Feb. 3.

According to Dr. Doug Miller, the Exaudio lectures are an annual academic lectureship in which a scholar is invited to present on a meaningful expression of Christian discipleship that arises from his or her professional discipline.

The first Exaudio lecture took place in 2017.

FINE ARTS JANUARY WRAP-UP

The Tabor fine arts departments did some exciting things in the month of January. Two specific events took place: the first and only Interterm choir and a student-led showcase.

Dr. Greg Zielke, arts director and professor of music, wanted students to have more opportunities to get involved in music. This is where his idea of “ichoir” was established.

“Interterm is full of so much empty space,” said Zielke. “I wanted to give students a chance to sing.”

During the Chapel service on Wednesday morning, the title of President Janzen’s presentation was “Career or Calling: Asking the Right Questions.” The first part of the lecture consisted of Janzen giving his testimony and talking about his vocation.

The second part of the lecture, titled “The Paradox of Christian Entrepreneurship,” took place Thursday evening. He used examples of ways he has been a leader as a Christian, from his very first job to founding the successful company Squid.

Janzen also gave examples of ways that students could participate in Christian entrepreneurship at Tabor.

“I am particularly excited that it’s not just entrepreneurship, for entrepreneurship’s sake, but entrepreneurship for Christ and his kingdom,” said Janzen.

He invited members of the Tabor community to join him in participating in Christian entrepreneurship.

The open schedule allowed students who would not normally be able to participate in choir to get involved.

Betsy George, a member of the fine arts program, said, “Having a small ensemble made it easy to learn the music quickly, in a short timeframe.”

Along with ichoir, the department put on a student-led musical showcase. The students set up the event with Zielke’s help. In preparation for the event, they created posters and marketed and planned the menu for the night.

“It gave both college and high school students the opportunity to prepare their own numbers and experience what it would be like to perform at Tabor,” said George, who came up with this idea.

The event was a success and ended up doubling as a fundraiser for the Music Department. This is something they hope to establish as an annual event that will continue to get bigger and better in years to come.

JONATHAN DOUGLAS SPOTLIGHT

Life growing up in Oakland was tough for Jonathan Douglas, member of Tabor’s facilities team. He and his two brothers all had different dads, they moved around a lot and their mom struggled with heroin addiction.

When Douglas was 6, they got an eviction notice, so Jonathan and his brothers went to live with his grandmother.

After a few days, she realized she couldn’t take care of them so she called the police to pick them up and take them into foster care.

Jonathan spent the remainder of his childhood in the foster care system.

When he was 12, one of his foster moms introduced him and his brothers to Christ, and they went to church on Sundays.

After he graduated from high school, Douglas started to question life and got interested in researching witchcraft and sorcery, all while trying to also be a Christian.

His brother noticed something off about him, so he helped Douglas get placed into a mental institution. Upon being released, he got involved with Teen Challenge, and it was there where he received Christ, and a woman prophesied over him that he would make music glorifying God.

After getting out of Teen Challenge, he started to turn back to his old ways and eventually moved to Los Angeles to become a rapper. He ended up homeless for a little while before moving to live with his brother in Fresno.

This is where he got connected with a Mennonite Brethren Church and met Whitney Allen, who would soon become his wife.

After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Whitney got laid off from her job as a youth pastor, so she and Jonathan moved to Hillsboro to be closer to her family.

Whitney now works in the enrollment office at Tabor while Jonathan is a member of the facilities team. He also likes to spend time ministering to students and creating music.
