WELCOME Welcome to Tabor College Athletics!
Tabor College welcomes each of you to another exciting year of Bluejay athletics! We are so excited for the season and to have each of you join us on our beautiful campus. Your support plays an integral role in the success and atmosphere for our student-athletes and their experience, as well as to those around you. We ask that only the highest David Ediger level of sportsmanship be on Director of Athletics display as you cheer on the Bluejays. We want your experience to be first class. If you see something that can be improved, let one of the administrators know. Athletics, coupled with the learning in the classroom, being a member of one of the many groups on campus, dorm life, supporting other teams and activities on campus, etc. are just a few of the factors that contribute to the shaping of the individual that Christ calls our student-athletes to be. May we all set a positive example as we cheer loud for our team and not against the opponent. This year’s campus theme is “Press On”, taken from Philippians 3:14: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Please join us as we “Press On” in all that we do.

STRENGTH TRAINING Tabor College enjoys the use of a state-of-the-art strength training facility and recreation center. The facilities were updated during the summer of 2019 to add new equipment. Students, alumni and the public are welcome to

FOOTBALL Mike Gardner Head Coach
Mike Gardner is a 1990 graduate of Baker University where he was a three-time NAIA All-American kicker. In 1986, he played in the national championship game for the Wildcats. Gardner brings over 32 years of coaching experience into the 2020 season. He started his coaching career as the special teams and recruiting coordinator at Hastings (Neb.) College from 1990-92. From 1993-95, Gardner was the receivers and quarterbacks’ coach at Bethel College. From 1996-99, he was the special teams and recruiting coordinator for Lindenwood (Mo.) University. He coached the defensive line in 1997, tight ends in 1998, and linebackers in 1999. He then became the defensive coordinator for the Lions in 2000. Gardner came to Tabor in 2001, as the defensive coordinator under then head coach Tim McCarty. Two years later, he helped the Bluejays earn their first trip to the NAIA national playoffs and a No. 15 national ranking. He earned AFCA NAIA assistant coach of the year, and AFLAC assistant coach of the year honors. Under his leadership, Tabor had two nationally-ranked defenses, finishing second in 2002 and 11th in 2003. He was named head coach at Tabor in 2004 and finished 9-2, winning the first KCAC football championship in Tabor College history. The program ended the year No. 14 nationally. Gardner’s 2005 squad finished 11-1 and repeated as conference champions. They also won their first-ever playoff game, defeating Graceland University (Iowa), 17-14. The Bluejays finished No. 6 nationally and Gardner was listed in American Football Monthly as one of the nation’s top small college football coaches, and was named Midwest Region NAIA Coach of the Year. In 2006 he became the head coach at Malone (Ohio) University. The program was without a winning season in the seven years prior to his arrival. He orchestrated a drastic turnaround, garnering three winning seasons and a Victory Bowl Championship. During his tenure, his Malone team received three top 25 rankings and he is the only coach to take the Pioneers to the Victory Bowl three times. He returned to Hillsboro in 2010 for a second tenure as Tabor’s head coach. From the beginning the tide was turning. Gardner’s third year back in Hillsboro brought an 8-2 finish and a secondplace conference finish. It culminated with a No. 18 ranking in the final polls, leading to 76 consecutive weeks with a national ranking. Gardner and the Bluejays continued to build on their success in 2012. The 2013 season saw a playoff qualifying team and a win as the Bluejays defeated Benedictine College in the first round on the road, 14-13. The win was Tabor’s first-ever road victory in the playoff era. Tabor finished second in the conference, 7-2, for a second-straight year. It finished 10-3 and was ranked No. 8 in the final NAIA poll.
The 2014 season led to Tabor’s best ranking in school history. After starting off the year 3-0 - which included a 27-17 win on the road over NAIA powerhouse Missouri Valley College, the Bluejays climbed as high as No. 3 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The Bluejays finished No. 24 nationally. The 2015 season led to unprecedented success for the Bluejays with an undefeated conference slate, 9-0. It was their first outright title in 10 years. Tabor was selected to host the playoffs for a second time, welcoming No. 9 Doane College (Neb.) to Hillsboro in a 16-14 victory, and a final No. 8 ranking and 11-2 overall record. 2016 was another successful run for the Bluejays, winning the KCAC title with an 8-1 conference record.They advanced to the playoffs, but saw their season come to an end. Eighteen players were named to the KCAC postseason teams, and the Bluejays were honored as KCAC Team of Character. Additionally, Spencer Baalman and Evan Sprayberry were named to the 2016 AFCANAIA Coaches All-America team. A third-straight conference title came for the Bluejays in 2017. They dropped the season opener, but won eight of their next nine games to finish the season with a KCAC record of 8-1. The Bluejays finished fourth in the KCAC in 2018. That finish was aided by four-straight wins to end the season, including a victory over No. 22 Avila University. The offense was led by second team All-American running back Drevion Cooper, while the defense was anchored by honorable mention All-American linebacker Melvin Williams. The 2019 season was highlighted by a very young Bluejay roster. Tabor finished the season strong, winning four of its last six games. Among those wins were a 29-21 win over rival Bethel College and a victory against Sterling College, 34-30, in its season finale. Gardner led Tabor to a 6-4 finish Over the past two seasons, the Bluejays have taken a young team and competed in a conference that has gotten better. Under his leadership TC has seen 3 play off wins, 5 KCAC titles, 38 Academic All-Americans, 5 Assistant Coaches of the Year, 1 national Assistant Coach of the Year, 135 All-Conference players, 12 NAIA All-Americans and 8 consecutive winning seasons. In 2022 Gardner led the Bluejays to a 6-5 overall record, with a 5-5 KCAC record, good for a fifth place finish in the conference. Ten Bluejays earned All-Conference honors in 2022. Gardner’s success on the gridiron has led to KCAC coach of the year honors in 2004, 2005, 2012, and 2015. He is fifth in wins among active NAIA coaches, accumulating 128 wins. He is currently the most successful coach in Bluejay football history, carrying a 128-79 overall record and a record of 103-61 at Tabor. He was inducted into the Tabor College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019 due to his years of success on the sideline. In its 56 year history,Tabor football has had just 15 winning seasons and Coach Gardner has been part of 13 of them. Gardner is married to his wife of 31 years, Julie. Their family includes son, Ben (30), his wife Chelsea and their two children Rylin and Bodie, and son Brooks (22), who plays linebacker for the Bluejays.

CJ Hill enters his seventh season as the defensive coordinator, and sixth season overall for the Bluejays. Hill was named the KCAC Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2018 season. This season Hill will be working with the defensive backs. Hill is a 2005 graduate of Tabor College with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Hill also has a master’s degree in sports administration from East Central University in Ada, Okla. Prior to joining the coaching staff at Tabor, Hill coached at East Central, serving as the defensive back coach as well as special teams coordinator. Hill resides in Hillsboro.
Kevin Roehrich Assistant Coach Offensive Coordinator
Jeff Penner grew up in Ingalls, Kansas. He played for and graduated from Tabor College in 2002 with a degree in Secondary Social Science Education. He also was a student assistant coach during the 2001 football season. After a few seasons, Coach Penner joined Coach Gardner’s staff for the 2004-05 seasons. During this time Tabor College won its 1st Conference Championship and 1st Playoff game in its history. Over the last fifteen years, Coach Penner lived in Kansas, North Carolina, and Oklahoma working several different occupations in teaching, coaching, and agriculture. Coach Penner returns to Tabor College to pursue a Master’s Degree and return to coaching at the collegiate level.
JoJuan Thompson
Kevin Roehrich begins his first season as the offensive coordinator for the Bluejays. Roehrich graduated from Doane University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in fitness and sports management. Roehrich played a season for the Lincoln Haymakers after graduating, but eventually returned to Doane as a defensive line intern and offensive line assistant coach. Roerich comes to Tabor from Doane University where he was the associate offensive coordinator in 2021. Roehrich helped the Tigers finish third in the GPAC and No. 26 nationally in rushing yards per game.
Graduate Assistant Coach JoJuan Thompson is entering his first season as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Tabor College Football program. Thompson is a 2022 graduate of Tabor College and started on the defensive line for the Bluejays. He has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Coaching. He is pursuing his Master’s Degree in Neuroscience and Trauma. Thompson is a native of Richmond, Calif. and currently resides in Hillsboro.

Assistant Coach Meza-Casillas was born and raised in Salem, Ore. In 2015, he started his football collegiate career at Santa Barbara City College as an offensive lineman. He transferred to Tabor College in 2018 where he played four seasons for the Bluejays. He graduated in 2021 with his bachelors in Psychology and in 2022 with his M.Ed. in Neuroscience and Trauma. In the Fall of 2022 Armando volunteer coached the defensive line. In 2023, he will be filling a new role as an assistant coach and will be working with the linebackers.

Federico Compan is entering his first year at Tabor College and will serve as a Graduate Assistant/ Running Backs Coach. He spent the 2022 season as a football analyst for NCAA Division III University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and also spent time as a Defense and Special Teams scout at Universidad Anahuac in Mexico. He started his career in football coaching and scouting as a Latin America regional scout for All22, a global scouting/recruiting service. He is currently pursuing his MBA in Sports Management and Leadership at Tabor. He is originally from Mexico City, Mexico.

Hincher is entering his fourth year as the head coach for the Men’s and Women’s cross country team. He came to Tabor from Montreat College in Montreat, N.C., where he was a four-year letter winner, threeyear captain, and five time NAIA National Qualifier between cross country and outdoor track and field. Hincher was named to the Appalachian Athletic Conference all-freshman team and selected as an All-Conference performer in 2016 and 2017. During the 2018 season, Hincher was a national qualifier in cross country. Hincher also qualified for the NAIA outdoor track and field championships all four years during his time at Montreat. Since arriving at Tabor, the Men’s and Women’s cross country programs produced nine national qualifiers and never finished lower than fifth at the conference meet. The program is reaching new heights under Hincher’s leadership, producing the first appearance in the national poll during the 2022 season. Coaching the distance runners during indoor track and outdoor track, school records have been produced in 13 different events while boasting two AllAmericans during the 2023 Indoor season. Hincher was named Women’s KCAC Coach of the Year for cross country in 2022 along with being named KCAC Men’s Indoor Track Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022. A Bachelor of Science-Exercise Science major, Hincher graduated in May 2019 from Montreat College and later completed his MBA at Tabor College in 2021. He is a USATF Level I Certified Coach along with holding an Endurance Specialist Certification from USTFCCCA. Rylan married Lindsay (Crist) in October 2020 and lives in Hillsboro, with their two dogs Winston and Mazie.
Originally from Frontenac, Kan., Soo Hoo graduated from Tabor College in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in business management and finance. He ran cross country for the Bluejays for three years, serving as team captain for two of those years. He is in his fifth season with the Bluejay cross country teams and previously served as an assistant for the track and field teams for nine years. Joel is married to Lori (Akers) Soo Hoo and they have two children, Claudia and Talon. He currently works for the MB Foundation in Hillsboro.
Lindsay Hincher Assistant Coach
Lindsay Hincher is a 2019 Tabor College graduate. She was a cross country national qualifier in 2017. She serves as an Assistant Cross Country Coach for the Hesston Middle/ High School District where she also teaches sixth grade math. Lindsay lives in Hillsboro with her husband, Rylan and their two dogs, Winston and Mazie.

Thomson enters his tenth season at the helm of the Bluejay women’s soccer program. Thomson received a master’s degree in science in recreation and sports science with a concentration in soccer coaching from Ohio University in 2019. He earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Tabor in 2006. He was a two-time captain for the Bluejay men’s soccer team and earned All-KCAC honors in 2004. Upon graduation from Tabor in 2006, Thomson became the assistant coach at Pittsburg High School in Pittsburg (Kan.). In 2010, Thomson founded the Southeast Kansas Soccer Academy and took over the women’s program at Independence Community College. His 2013 ICC roster broke every record in school history, posting a 7-7-2 record. Thomson’s 2021 Tabor squad finished 7-7-4, finishing fifth in the KCAC with a 5-3-4 conference record. Tabor landed six players on the all-conference team. Coach Thomson resides in McPherson with his wife Melissa and their three children: Sawyer, Moses and Henry.
Ruth Estrada is from Salt Lake City, Utah and currently resides in Hillsboro. Estrada is entering her third coaching season at Tabor. She played soccer for Iowa Central Community College from 2015-2017. In 2015 she helped lead the team that won the NJCAA D1 National Championship. After college, Estrada played in the Women’s Premier Soccer League with the Utah Arrows from 2018-2020. Estrada is currently working on her bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Utah, and hopes to become a physical therapist in the future.

Grant Brubacher enters his 17th season leading the Tabor men’s soccer team. This is his tenth season focusing on the men’s program after coaching both the men and women from 2007-13. Previous to his appointment to lead the soccer teams, he was the assistant baseball coach at Tabor from 2006-07. Brubacher graduated from Tabor College with a degree in business administration in 2006. In 2019, Brubacher also completed his master’s degree in Hillsboro. During his time as a Bluejay, Brubacher played soccer, basketball, and baseball. His accolades from his playing career include being named to three all-conference soccer teams, two all-conference basketball teams, and two all-conference baseball teams. He was the KCAC Offensive Player of the Year in soccer in 2004 and an honorable mention NAIA All-American in basketball that same season. In 2018 Grant was inducted into the Tabor College Athletic Hall of Fame. continued on page 36

During the 2020-21 season, Brubacher picked up his year award while being named on the academic all-conference 100th career coaching win. Brubacher has led his teams list all four years. He is originally from Topsail Island, N.C. to KCAC championship game appearances in 2012, 2013, and 2021. The 2021 season also resulted in the Bluejay men making their first NAIA national tournament appearance since 1961. He was again recognized as the KCAC Coach of the Year in 2021 after receiving the same award in 2012. Grant is married to his wife of 13 years, Vickie and together they have three children: Oliver, Weston, and Brielle.

Casey Quiggle Head Coach Casey Quiggle aka “Quiggs” begins his 2nd season leading the Tabor volleyball team.“Quiggs”,,came to Tabor in August 2022 following stints as the head coach at Sheridan College (WY), Southwestern Community College (Iowa) and Asst. Coach at Jamestown University (ND), and coached both mens’ and womens’ volleyball at Aliso Niguel H.S. from 2010 – 2017. Originally from San Clemente, Calif., his coaching career began in 2004. Over his career, he has coached at the high school, club and collegiate levels. Coach Quiggle has his BA in Political Science (Central College, Pella, Iowa), an MBA (Univ of Phoenix, Ariz.) and his MCAA (Coaching and Athletic Admin - Concordia, Irvine, Calif.) His passion is coaching and mentoring student athletes to excel both on and off the court. During his seven years at Aliso Niguel High School, Quiggs helped guide the girls’ program to three straight Seaview League Championships and one CIF (SS) Championship. He also helped guide the boys program to an undefeated Seaview League Championship and back-to- back CIF playoff berths. Quiggle has over 35 years of experience in competitive athletics, including 18+ years of coaching volleyball. While in high school, he played both soccer and baseball. In college
Quiggs added football to the mix and played three sports at the collegiate level. Coach Quiggle and his wife, Brianne and their dog Cash lived in Sheridan,Wyoming prior to moving to Hillsboro.They love the outdoors, good music and good friends. Quiggs enjoys BBQ-ing and hosting smaller gatherings. Both Quiggs and Brianne grew up in Christian homes and continue to grow in their relationship with Christ each and every day.
Alexia Souza Graduate Assistant Coach Adrianne Ferris is entering her first year as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Tabor College Volleyball program. She initially started her college volleyball career at Friends University in Wichita, Kan. in 2015 but ended up transferring shortly after due to a knee injury. She finished out her playing career at Fort Hays State University and graduated with her first bachelor’s degree in General Studies in 2019 and graduated with her second bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 2021. She worked as a certified line judge for local colleges and universities through PAVO (Player Association of Volleyball Officials) and KAVO (Kansas Association of Volleyball Officials). She is currently pursuing her MBA in Sports Management and is originally from Sedgwick, Kan.

Matlock moved to Hillsboro from Southern California seven years ago and brings 15 years of cheer and dance experience to the Bluejay squad. Matlock has coached two different high schools, worked with competitive cheer, and also served as a choreographer for other cheer squads. She has also had the opportunity to consult overseas for cheer and dance as well. Matlock currently owns Studio 23, located in Hillsboro. The studio allows her the opportunity to build relationships through teaching dance. She has been married to her husband, Jeremy, for 15 years and they have four children, Ashtyn (12), Graham (11), Claire (9), and Pierce (6 months).
Yoder has extensive cheer experience, cheering at both Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. She graduated from Wichita State University Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (B.S.D.H) and Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Yoder also competed at UCA Nationals with Pratt Community College. She started her own gymnastics program in high school and she has coached tumbling and cheer classes in several different gyms over the last decade. Rylee and her husband, Jacob, have been married for ten years and are very active members of the Hillsboro community. They currently reside outside of Peabody with their children Ryker, Tanynn, Asher and Archer.
