From the President Sunrises. Sunsets. Living on the Kansas prairie we are treated daily to the artistic work of God. Although most people comment about the beauty of the sunsets, mainly because more happen to be awake at that time, I prefer the sunrises. The crisp air, sounds of the world waking up and the freshness of a new day are invigorating and inspiring.

Birds are singing, plants seem refreshed and the dawn replaces the darkness. Each day is a new beginning. For each of us, a new day represents possibility, hope and opportunity. Maybe today a problem will be solved.

Maybe today a dream will become reality. Maybe today a broken relationship will be mended.

New beginnings. New challenges. New dreams.

Morning is also that perfect time to meet with God and begin the walk through the day with Him.

I love the mornings.

One of the things I love about education is that each fall we have the opportunity to begin anew. New students. New courses. New faces. Just as in the game of golf, with a fresh tally kept for each hole played,

so in education each year we begin again. As summer draws to a close a clean slate is now before us. Who is God bringing to us that will enrich our lives? Who is God bringing to us that we will have the opportunity to participate with God in life transformation? I love new beginnings.

Life is filled with stages, which present countless new beginnings. I can still recall the excitement of the first day I was on the Tabor campus as a student.

I remember the first time I came to campus as a parent of a student and now, most recently, the first day on campus as president is still clearly etched in my mind. Each of these new beginnings was filled with God’s love, grace and transforming work. Reading the alumni news at the back of the magazine are additional examples of new beginnings... births, marriages, vocation changes and even deaths. I am touched by new beginnings.

This year at Tabor, in addition to the many new students, the campus will have many new faces serving in the classroom, on the grounds and in the offices. You will be meeting many of them in this edition of the Connection. Each of these individuals is a gift from God. Each is beginning a new chapter in their lives. Each is joining us in preparing people for a life of learning, work and service for Christ and His kingdom. These new additions, along with those who have given many years of service, are working to make Tabor a school of choice for those who want an academically excellent, life transforming, globally relevant and decidedly Christian education. I am thankful for new beginnings.

God is a God of new beginnings. Beginning with Adam, then Noah, continuing with Abraham and finally in Jesus, God seems to love new beginnings as well. His sovereignty, His creativity and His grace are displayed with each beginning. He is a master at providing the setting for new experiences, new relationships and new opportunities which enrich us, inspire us and challenge us. As we begin a new year at Tabor, we are thankful for the new faces and wait expectantly to see the life-transforming work of God in our lives, the lives of the students and the life of Tabor College.

More than mile markers I love maps. They are at once practical and, to me at least, poetic expressions of time and place.

I remember sitting in libraries for long stretches looking at one and then another of the oversized maps in the reference section: pouring over details concerning places I could not pronounce, reviewing regions I had studied, imagining journeys ahead. Over the years I have had the great privilege of traveling to multiple international destinations. I still have much of the world, to say nothing of the United States, to see and experience, Dr. Frank Johnson, Vice-president of Academic Affairs

I remember sitting in libraries for long stretches looking at one and then another of the oversized maps in the reference section: pouring over details concerning places I could not pronounce, reviewing regions I had studied, imagining journeys ahead though.

One of the serendipities of leaving Goshen College in Indiana and moving back to Kansas was a new state map of course! Though we have been gone just under four years, it was a delight to take a mental tour of the state from afar – meandering through towns and over topography – plus it was a welcome break from seemingly endless packing and unpacking which has been our lot over the summer months. As much as maps

mean to me, they are only a reflection of reality. To really know a place requires one to get off the highway, purposely avoid the national restaurant chain and go local. For my wife and me moving to Hillsboro has been like coming home. Our map has come to life, marking a new chapter, a new mile marker and a new beginning.

As I think ahead to the all the new and returning students descending on campus, I pause to wonder where each of these students is on their intellectual, social and spiritual journey.

They will come from big cities and small towns; some will arrive certain of their success, while others will be rethinking their decision to leave home. Faculty and staff have the great privilege to lean in and love on the students of Tabor College.

May God help us to never become stoic “mile markers,” on students journeys, offering little more than minimal information regarding their locations during this critical chapter of their lives. Instead, it is my prayer that we be like a cloud by day and fire by night (Ps 78:14) guiding all who come to campus to the ultimate destination: Jesus Christ. In this way, students and alumni will have means by which to navigate the days ahead.

Even though I was raised in a Christian family, it was while attending a small Christian College that I truly set my direction on Christ. I had been in the Church all my life but it was time to say an unconditional “yes” to the One who mapped my life out long before I was born. The road has indeed proven uncomfortably narrow at times; the way has been anything but straight; and I’ll freely admit that I had no idea where I was on more than one occasion. But we serve a great and patient God. In stark contrast to my limited vision, I have never once been out of His sight! To paraphrase the Apostle Paul: I am confident that He who began a good work in me will carry it to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil 1:6). May Tabor College continue to be a place where men and women come to know Christ as Lord and Savior, growing deeper in their knowledge of that which matters most, and allowing Him to personally guide them through whatever is ahead on their journey.

“Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here”—Homecoming 2010 Homecoming is a time that we look forward to at Tabor College. It is a special time for the “old gang” to get together, reminisce about the days gone by, and share what is happening in our lives. It’s a fun time for alumni, friends, and family to walk on campus, speak with current and former faculty and staff, and catch up with classmates. It’s a heart-warming time to gather as a community to remember our Alma Mater with thankfulness and appreciation.

I would like to personally invite you to return to Tabor College at Homecoming! Join us in celebrating God’s goodness to our campus. There will be old and new things

for you to enjoy! New beginnings for couple Kyle and Alyssa Kroeker to teach in Great Bend

The diploma is freshly signed. The marriage ceremony is completed. The job is secured. It would seem, that Kyle and Alyssa (Voth) Kroeker are starting out on one of the most blessed adventures, and Tabor College has played a role in it.

Sitting and visiting one hot July day in the quiet sanctuary of the Tabor library, basking in the afterglow of a wonderful, albeit rainy, honeymoon trip to Puerto Vallarta, the pair shared their thoughts about their Tabor experience, how it has shaped them as young adults and prepared them for a life of service – with the first stop being educators in the community of Great Bend, starting this fall.

Both Kyle and Alyssa are legacy students, but both were quick to note that they weren’t pressured to attend Tabor.

Alyssa, who attended Hesston high school, knew that sports were important to her and that she wanted to play ball while working on her degree. While she visited other colleges in making the decision where she would pursue her education, once she came to the Hillsboro campus, the last stop of her school tour, she knew that she had found where she belonged. “I knew almost instantly,” Alyssa explained. “I had intentionally saved Tabor for last. When I got to campus it felt like home.”

Kyle had a similar experience, noting that he’d played backyard ball as a child, pretending to be a Tabor football player, complete with jersey and big aspirations.

It didn’t hurt his prospects either that his father, David, is on the Tabor faculty and is the assistant track coach.

Like Alyssa, though, he was given the opportunity to freely choose his post-secondary institution – and he, too, found that Tabor provided that perfect fit of opportunity and connections that he was comfortable with.

It would seem Tabor played a vital part in their lives from the beginning. Attending rival schools, Alyssa knew Kyle and his athletic prowess. “The first time we met, around a table during freshman orienta-

That irony is not lost on her as she sports a shiny new wedding band on her left hand a mere four years later.

basketball and tennis courts, not to mention in the classroom. In spring of 2010, he was selected as the recipient of KCAC Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character award. Alyssa was a member of the women’s softball team as catcher.

Going into their junior year, the reality of a challenging job market in a tough economy was concerning to both Kyle and Alyssa. They knew that while they could offer employers unique skills – hers as a teacher of mathematics and his as a male teacher in the elementary field ­– still, they were concerned about finding work close to each other, so they tried to come up with contingency plans.

The reality of the challenge of the job search hit Kyle like a load of bricks when he discovered that in one particular opening there were 80 other applicants.

“I wondered how they could really get to know me during the interview process,” he said in reflection.

“There were a lot of experienced teachers and I knew just how hard it could be to get a job.”

But that sobering moment didn’t last long. A few days later the couple each got the opportunity to interview at Great Bend.

While the couple thought that they were waiting for one school to call back with an offer for one of them, it would seem that the Lord was working in his

The plan would be that the other would then substitute or look to apply at a neighboring school. Instead, the pair found themselves each accepting contracts that would put them in the classroom, using their respective degrees — his in elementary education, hers in secondary mathematics.

This fall Kyle will be teaching sixth grade at Riley Elementary school while Alyssa will be teaching courses at Great Bend High School.

“This was definitely a God thing,” Kyle said. “We were both back and forth over what we were going to do. We were unsure about taking the Great Bend jobs or waiting to hear back from another school. As it turned out, soon after we accepted the offers, we got rejection letters from the other school.”

The family and close community of Tabor, which is part of the reason the couple chose to attend in the first place, was once again in the focus as they are

departing. “We have had a lot of people come up to us and give us advice about Great Bend: churches to attend and people to meet. It’s been really helpful,” Kyle admitted.

With a house rented and the details of their first day to report for duty, the couple is anxious to get a start on the next chapter in their lives. It is quite certain to be a wonderful beginning to a Christ-centered life of learning, service, community and involvement for these outstanding Tabor alums. — Beth Riffel

Searching for jobs The couple used a number of the career services that Tabor offers students, including the Optimal Resume service. This web-based program assists students with not only building and polishing their resumes, but gathering up other important documents, transcripts and credentials that are required during the job-seeking process. Amy Kjellin, who had worked in the Career Services office until late this past summer, worked with Alyssa and Kyle.

She noted that the Optimal Resume is a powerful tool that both current students and alumni can use. Templates for building resumes as well as modules that help prepare for interviews are available. To access the web-based program go to https://tabor.optimalresume.com/ “The education department promotes the use of the service very well,” Kjellin said. “It’s available across campus and students should be aware of the value the website has as they look to finding a job.” Kjellin also noted that both Alyssa and Kyle were active on campus and completed a lot of community service and volunteer hours, which are often attractive to potential employers.

Commencement 2010 It was a day for new beginnings and a nod to old traditions as the 100th class graduated from Tabor College during the spring commencement ceremonies held Saturday, May 22, 2010. For the first time the ceremony took place in the newly-completed Joel H. Wiens Stadium. The day was bright but blustery as 100 Tabor College Hillsboro seniors and 45 Tabor College Wichita graduates were presented their diplomas by President, Jules Glanzer.

The invocation was presented by Teresa Pearson, class representative from Adult & Graduate Studies, and the graduate address was given by Aaron Whitelaw, class representative from Tabor College Hillsboro. Mr. Lyndon Vix, Chairman of the Board gave the commencement

address, Everything You Need To Know About Life in 15 Minutes or Less.

Roxanne Stauffer, senior class president, Tabor College Hillsboro gave the class response, while Julianna Richard, class representative, Tabor College Hillsboro, closed with the benediction.

History made: Kendrick drafted by the Detroit Tigers History was made June 9 as Tabor College senior catcher Tyson Kendrick (Arkansas City, Kan.) was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 49th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft.

Kendrick, who is the first Bluejay baseball player ever to be drafted, was one of 39 NAIA players and two KCAC players to be taken in this year’s draft.

dreams about” said Kendrick. “I am truly blessed to have the opportunity to play professional baseball.

Coach Standiford has been a great coach who has helped me become the player I am today, and I would like to thank him, my teammates, and my family and friends for all their support they have given me throughout my career.”

Kendrick, who was named Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Year as well as Tabor College Male Athlete of the Year, recorded one of the most impressive single season performances in school history.

“There is not a more deserving player than Tyson,” said Head Baseball Coach Mark Standiford. “His work ethic, leadership qualities, and athletic ability will allow him to succeed at the next level. He is the first player at Tabor to be drafted and hopefully the first of many.”

This past season Kendrick, a First Team All-KCAC performer, led the KCAC and the Bluejays with a batting average at .441, on base percentage of .521, hits

with 71, and doubles with 19. He also led the Bluejays in slugging percentage of .634, ranking him third in the KCAC, and RBI’s with 52, ranking him second in the KCAC. “Tyson was our leader both on and off the field,” said Standiford. “The numbers he put up this year and the honors that he has received have never been done here at Tabor. We will all be following Tyson closely this year. He is the kind of player who will represent Tabor well both on and off the field.”

“We could not be more excited for Tyson,” said Vice-President for Athletics Rusty Allen. “In many ways, Tyson’s accomplishments mirror a baseball program that has become something we are very proud of. We will follow Tyson closely: We believe that not only will he be successful on the field, but that God will be using him to have a positive influence on all whom he comes into contact with.”

Kendrick is currently playing for the Connecticut Tigers in the New York Penn Class A Short Season League. He has appeared in four games this season where he is batting .200 (2-10) on the season with two walks, a run scored and a .533 on base percentage.

In his first big league game versus the Vermont Lake Monsters, Kendrick went 1-3 from the plate with a walk.

“So far my experience has been great and I am just working as hard as I can to continue to grow as a player,” said Kendrick. “Getting my first hit in my first professional game was an awesome feeling, a dream come true. Each day I continue to get more and more comfortable with the timing and speed of the game which has really helped. I just continue to remind myself that baseball is baseball and that I have played it my whole life and that God has blessed me with my talents and this opportunity which I am very thankful for.”

Bridenbaugh signs independent contract Tabor College utility infielder and relief pitcher Paul Bridenbaugh (Peoria, Ariz.) has signed a contract to continue his playing career with the Sioux City Explorers of the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.

“I am really excited and blessed to get the opportunity to continue my playing career,” said Bridenbaugh.

“I would like to thank my coaches, teammates, friends, and family for all their support and help in getting me to where I am today.”

This past season Bridenbaugh earned First Team AllKCAC honors, as both a utility player and relief pitcher.

At the plate Bridenbaugh tied Kendrick during the regular season in batting average of .441, while finishing second on the team and in the KCAC for total hits with 67. He also finished third on the team in home runs with five, and was fourth on the team in RBI’s with 38, ranking him 10th in the KCAC in both categories.

As a relief pitcher and the Bluejays closer, Bridenbaugh recorded a 4-1 record with four saves and a .377 ERA in 18 appearances this season. In 31 innings pitched, he allowed 13 earned runs on 27 hits with 10 strikeouts, while holding opposing batters to a .235 bat-

ting average. His four saves were also tied for first in the KCAC this season.

“Paul has made the most improvement of any player at Tabor, and is well deserving of the chance to play for Sioux City,” said head baseball coach Mark Standiford. “He is truly a double threat both on the mound and as a position player."

“Paul’s hard work and competitive spirit continue to pay off,” said Vice-President for Athletics Rusty Allen. “The success of our baseball program is clear and now our players are beginning to be recognized by those outside our organization. We are excited for Paul and proud of his accomplishments. We are confident he will compete well and have a positive influence on all the people he will interact with.”

Bridenbaugh has appeared in 17 games for the Explorers so far this season where he has gone 4-34 from the plate with five runs scored.

Suzanne Unruh named new head softball coach Tabor College President Jules Glanzer announced that Suzanne Unruh, a former softball All-American at Cowley County Community College, has been named the new head coach of the Bluejays’ softball team.

Unruh, a former Derby High School graduate, has spent the past seven seasons as the assistant softball coach at Cowley County Community College, home to one of the most premier junior college softball programs in the country.

“Coach Unruh brings a wealth of playing, coaching, and recruiting experience to us,” said Vice President of Athletics Rusty Allen. “Her work as an assistant at Cowley County speaks for itself in the form of six conference titles and four national tournament Suzanne Unruh appearances. We are excited for her commitment to excellence and to creating an environment that encourages players and coaches to grow in Christ.”

“I am thrilled to become the new head softball coach at Tabor,” said Unruh “I am excited for the opportunity to coach for the Lady Jays Softball program and get to know the wonderful people within the college. My goal is to bring Tabor softball into the upper level of the KCAC, and compete for conference championships every year.”

During her time at Cowley County Suzanne helped lead the Tigers to six consecutive Jayhawk East Conference Championships (2004-2009), and four NJCAA National

Tournament appearances placing as high as fourth.

She also helped develop 10 All-Americans, 16 AllRegion players, and six Academic All-Americans while learning under the tutelage of one of the most successful coaches in history, Ed Hargrove (955-312 Career Record).

Unruh also served as an assistant varsity and head junior varsity coach at Derby High School, as well as an assistant softball coach and interim head coach at Butler County Community College.

During her collegiate playing career at Cowley County, Unruh was named a two-time NFCA AllAmerican, a two-time NJCAA All-American, and a two-time First Team All-Jayhawk East and First Team All-Region VI performer as both an infielder and outfielder during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

After a successful career at Cowley County, Unruh transferred to Fort Hays State University where she set eight offensive records for the Tigers while earning back-to-back First Team All-RMAC honors in 1999 and 2000.

“I am looking forward to helping my players develop to the best of their ability both on the field and in the classroom,” said Unruh. “Tabor is a great place to be, and has set high standards in education as well as the character they mold their students into. I want to make sure I carry on that tradition as well as make them the best softball players they can be.”

Unruh graduated from Cowley County with an Associate of Arts in Graphic Art and Design, and a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Health Promotions and Kinesiology from Fort Hays State University.

Unruh and her husband, Mike, have been married for three years. They have a daughter Kinlee who is two-years old and a son named Caden who is four months old.

Campus News Excellence in teaching recognized The 2010 Clarence Hiebert Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Brad Vogel (g'85). The award, presented each spring and determined by student nomination and recommendation, is the highest honor given to a faculty member at Tabor College.

The Hiebert award was first given in the year 2000, and is given annually to the faculty member who best exemplifies the qualities of excellent teaching at Tabor College.

Vogel is in his 13th year as professor of choral music. He directs the concert choir, the men’s ensemble Cantate and the annual Christmas Messiah performance. He also teaches voice and courses in choral conducting, vocal pedagogy, music history, church music, and music education methods.

In nominating Vogel for the award, one student wrote: “I nominate Brad Vogel. I believe he exemplifies the qualities of excellent teaching. He has a strong

Christian commitment, which is viewed in how he integrates his faith into his classes as well as his values in his own walk. He views his position as one of ministry, and encourages those involved in music to do the same. He teaches that beautiful music is made when it is not only technically excellent, but also done from the heart, with a purpose of ministry and praise to God.”

Hope scholarship grant expands music offering Emily Miller (g'10), graduate in Humanities from Kingman, Kan., has been accepted into the graduate program at Emporia State University where she will pursue her master's in the School of Library and Information Management.

Miller is an honors graduate who also pursued a Church Music minor. She was the recipient of a Hope Scholarship grant, which focused on the Tabor library music collection. She surveyed students, determined music interests and made purchasing decisions.

The Hope Scholarship grant program was established in the spring of 2007 by the New Hope Mennonite Brethren Church. The Minnesota church established an endowment to support scholarship at Tabor College.

During the reception honoring Miller held in August, librarian Robin Ottoson said that her wise purchasing decisions allowed her to maximize the number of new music acquisitions using the Hope Scholarship grant funds.

Academic excellence amongst athletes has always been the standard at Tabor College, and this past season the tradition continued as 11 of the 14 varsity athletic teams will receive the NAIA Scholar Team award for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Topping that list is the women’s cross country team, which in the 2009-2010 season, posted the seventh highest cumulative GPA in the nation at 3.74.

Men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, tennis, soccer, and indoor track and field along with volleyball, and women’s outdoor track and field, all qualified for the award by accumulating a team GPA of over 3.0 during the 2009-2010 school year.

Two recipients of character awards Ratzlaff and Kroeker named KCAC LeRoy Walker Champions of Character

Wiens interns in Washington, D.C. Tabor College student body president, Andrew Wiens, Topeka, Kan., has spent the summer as a congressional intern for Kansas Rep. Jerry Moran. Wiens is a 2010 graduate of Tabor College with degrees in philosophy, history, religious studies, and business management. His parents are Emery (g'79) and Donna Wiens. “Congressional internships offer Kansas students a great opportunity to learn about Congress and the legislative process,” Moran said. “Andrew is doing important work for Kansans and gaining valuable experience that will help him in the future.”

Wiens will return to Tabor College this fall to complete his undergraduate coursework. Upon finishing his studies, he will either pursue a post-graduate degree or enter the Kansas workforce.

“My experience working for Congressman Moran in Washington, D.C. has been tremendous,” Wiens said. “I have not only been exposed to national politics and the legislative process, but I have also witnessed firsthand the complex issues facing our country’s leaders today. I truly appreciate this special opportunity and look forward to applying what I have learned in the future.”

Tabor College Head Volleyball Coach, Amy Ratzlaff (Hillsboro, Kan.), and senior basketball and tennis player Kyle Kroeker (g'10) (Hillsboro, Kan.), have been named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference’s 2010 Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character recipients.

“This award is truly an honor for me and a reflection on our program here at Tabor,” said Ratzlaff. “I really feel blessed each day that Amy Ratzlaff God has called me to work at Tabor and I try my best to honor him through my work.”

This past season Ratzlaff led the Bluejays to the KCAC regular season title with a record of 16-2 in league play and 20-11 overall before falling one game short of a national tournament berth.

“This award is very humbling and shows that character is noticed by other people, and that nice guys don’t always finish last,” said Kroeker. “I feel it is also a testament to Tabor College and the importance they place on teaching and upholding character as well as Christian lifestyle.”

Trip to the Holy land available This coming January, a group of Tabor students and other interested persons will visit the land of Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus, the disciples, and early Christians. The tour will be led by Tabor Bible professor Douglas Miller.

The trip has four primary goals that intertwine daily on the three-week trip: understanding the Bible in its context, learning about the three major religions of the area (Judaism, Islam, Eastern Christianity), understanding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and time for worship, reflection, and prayer.

Alumni are welcomed to take part in this wonderful opportunity, although spots are filling up rapidly.

Dr. Frank Johnson

Frank E. Johnson, who was hired following a national search, is the new vice president of academic affairs for Tabor College. Johnson holds a doctorate in U.S. history from Michigan State University and brings to the position 15 years of teaching and administrative experience in Christian higher education.

Previously Johnson was at Goshen College (Ind.) where he was employed as special assistant to the president for institutional planning, strategy and research and as professor of history.

Andrew Sensenig comes to us as an assistant professor of biology. He has a PhD in entomology from University of Maryland, College Park. A native of Pennsylvania, he

will be teaching courses in general physics, environmental science, entomology and biology.

Jayakar Dalavai, as a new associate professor of business, brings to campus a diverse background of private industry experience. A native of India, he holds degrees from Washburn University, Emporia State University and a PhD from Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. He will be teaching courses in international business, management, organizational behavior, marketing, and operations management.

Lara Vanderhoof has been hired as an assistant professor of social welfare. She comes to Tabor from the St. Francis Academy, (Salina Kan.) where she has been a supervisor and director. She holds two degrees, including a master's from Roberts Wesleyan College (Rochester, NY) and worked there as an adjunct assistant professor of social work.

Kevin Hadduck, a native of McPherson, Kan. comes to Tabor as the director of student success.

He has served in a similar role at McPherson College for the past 13 years. He holds an undergraduate degree in english from McPherson and obtained his graduate degree in english, from Baylor University (Waco, Texas).

Patrick Masar is the new men’s resident director. He is a graduate of Sterling College (Sterling, Kan.) with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. Prior to joining the Tabor staff in August, he was at Wheaton College (Wheaton, Jayakar Dalavai Ill.) working in public safety, housing and meal assignments. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three young girls.

Ron Braun, a 1975 graduate of Tabor College has accepted the position of director of development. Since 2004, Ron has served as director of development at Kidron Bethel Retirement Services in North Newton, Kan. He began work at Tabor on July 12.

Tabor – Wichita Terry Wise has been selected as the new vice-president of Adult and Graduate Studies at Tabor College Wichita. He comes to Tabor after serving as church pastor while working to complete his law degree from Oak Brook College of Law, (Fresno, Calif.) In addition to his JD, he holds a BA in history from William Penn College, (Oskaloosa, Iowa) master's in theological studies from Bethel Theological Seminary, (St. Paul, Minn.)

D. Min, in pastoral ministries from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, (Deerfield, Ill.) and a PhD in speech communications and conflict management from the Union Institute and University (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Lori Walsh has been hired as the first full-time admissions recruiter for TCW. A graduate of Fresno Pacific University (Fresno, Calif.) with a BA in interpersonal communication, she joined the staff on July 6. Her enthusiasm for Christ, Tabor College and our adult students is exciting and she will make significant contributions to team.

Carmen Stephens is a new assistant professor in the Nursing program. She started at the Wichita

Porter received his BS in business administration from Tabor, following up with and a master's in sports industry management from Georgetown University. He participated on the basketball and track teams while a student at Tabor Joseph W. Wuest, has been working with the admissions team as a counselor since August 8. A native of Salina, Kan. he is a 2005 Tabor Magna Cum Laude graduate with a BS in business administration. He and his wife Deena have three children and live in Goessel, Kan.

Athletics Mike Gardner, former head football coach for Tabor College, returns for the 2010 football season. He led the 2005 Bluejays to an 11-1 record with an NAIA national playoff victory and a No. 6 ranking in the final NAIA poll. Prior to coming to Tabor College Dan coached offensive line at Lindenwood University (St. Charles, Mo.) during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. During 2009 he helped lead Lindenwood to NAIA National Championship game.

Billy Hickman, a native of Bakersfield, Calif., rejoins the Tabor football coaching staff as the offensive coordinator. A 2008 graduate of Tabor with a BA in history, Hickman was on the football team from 2005-07. He was captain in 2007 and received all-conference honors. He coached the Tabor defensive line in the spring of 2008, before leaving and serving as a coach for the Colorado School of Mines (Golden, Colo.) in 2008-09.

Suzanne Unruh, a native of Derby, is the new head softball coach. She holds degrees in graphic art and design from Cowley County Community College (Winfield, Kan.) and a BS in health promotions and kinesiology from Ft. Hays State University (Hays, Kan.).

She comes to Tabor after serving as the assistant softball coach at Cowley College for the past seven seasons.

Pat Hon has been named the manager of the Campus Recreation Center as well as the asst. baseball coach. Hon most recently was the pitching coach at Division I Texas Pan-America, in Edinburg, Texas. He has also served as a head coach for the Newton Rebels and most recently the Valley Center Diamond Dawgs in the Kansas Walter Johnson League where the squad advanced to the National Baseball Congress World Series and finished in 5th place in 2009. Hon graduated from Newman University (Wichita, Kan.) with his bachelor’s degree in business administration and earned his master’s degree in health education from Union College (Barbourville, Ky.).

Jeremy Nigh has been hired as the head cheer coach and academic media marketing coordinator. He brings a wealth of international experience to Tabor, having been born in Germany and raised in Idaho and then to Thailand where he remained until his junior year in high school. A graduate of Oral Roberts University, (Tulsa, Okla.) he has a BS in drama/television/film performance. He cheered all four years at Oral Roberts.

John Thiessen (g’60) passed away March 21, 2010.

He was the architect for the 1984 library addition and the 1990 Wohlgemuth Music Education Center.

He also assisted Tabor with campus master planning in the late 1970s and into the 1980s.

Emma Loewen Schroeder (g’62), passed away January 8, 2010 at Inman, Kan. In 1952, she accepted an offer to work as the secretary to the president of Tabor College, John N.C. Hiebert. She subsequently worked as the secretary to presidents Frank Peters and Leonard J. Franz. She obtained her AB in 1962 from Tabor College and her master's of social work in 1964 from the University of Nebraska.

Before coming to Tabor she spent four years in

war-torn Europe with MCC providing assistance to refugees and helping MCC set up offices in various countries. She donated one entire year’s salary as a social worker to Tabor.

Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg has announced the appointment of Ken Reddig (g’68) as director of its Braintree Creation Care Centre in East Braintree, Manitoba. This centre protects a remarkably diverse wildlands area and serves as a Christian Centre of learning and reflection around creation care and protection of the environment.

Burton Buller (g’68), director of Third Way Media since 1999, retired June 30, 2010. He will continue to host the Shaping Families radio program as a volunteer. He will also complete a new documentary exploring Christian and Muslim peace traditions in cooperation with Third Way Media and Odyssey Networks. After graduating from Tabor College, Buller earned a master’s degree in mass communications from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln, Neb.). Buller and his wife, Mary, have two adult sons, Jacob and John.

1970s Bob Thesman (g’72), a counselor at Blue Valley Northwest High School in Overland Park, Kan.,who has been a member of the KNEA board of directors for the past three years was recently elected by the members of Kansas-NEA to serve a term on the National Education Association board of directors.

He will be completing an unexpired term. This new position will oversee the activities and programs of the 3.2 million-member NEA. He will also be lobbying members of Congress for support for education.

Harold Loewen (g’71) has received the Excellence in Range Management Award for Area 1 in South Dakota. This is given by the Society for Range Management. Harold has implemented a variety of conservation practices throughout his farming operation (Hofer-Loewen Farm Inc.). The farm is located on his wife’s, Darla (Hofer g’74) Loewen father’s farmstead, in Carpenter, S.D.

1980s Timothy Givan (g’82) and his wife, Laurie, and their children, Chris and Kate, were recently named the 4-H Family of the Year. First National Bank of Hutchinson has sponsored the Reno County 4-H Family of the Year Award since 1985. Tim and his family have been involved with 4-H for the past 14

years completing projects in woodworking, robotics, and public speaking.

Timothy graduated from Washburn School of Law in 1985, worked for SRS for 17 years, and currently works at First National Bank of Hutchinson, Kan. Dr. Nathan Loewen (g’80) recently played the role of the absent-minded Professor Weberdorf in the James Valley Christian School’s play (Huron, S.D.), “Heidi,” which was part of a fundraiser for the dinner theatre. Loewen has appeared in several JVC plays.

Brian L. Wiens (g’87) has been elected by the American Statistical Association (ASA), the nation’s preeminent professional statistical society, as a Fellow of the Association. Recipients are recognized for their outstanding professional contributions to and leadership in the field of statistical science. The Fellows will receive their certificates at a ceremony on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at the annual Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The 2010 Fellows come from 18 states, the District of Columbia, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, and South Korea. The Committee on Fellows evaluates candidates’ contributions to the advancement of statistics, giving due weight to publications, the positions held by the candidates in the organizations in which they are employed, activities within the association, membership and accomplishments in other societies, and other professional activities. Brian currently works for Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth, Texas.

1990s Zach Brooks (g’92) was recently accepted into the doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition and Teaching at the University of Arizona. He will begin this fall. He finished his master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Rachel (Chitwood fs’96-98) Ammons, is currently a speech pathologist in L.A. County (Los Angeles) at El Rancho USD.

Jill (Crawford g’07) Larson graduated from Newman University (Wichita, Kan.) May 15, 2010, with a master’s of science in Education-Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis in ESL. Susan M. Headrick Wheeler (g’03) graduated May 22, 2010 with a master of divinity degree with a concentration in pastoral care and counseling from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind. Wheeler is pursuing work within a congregational setting in the pastoral care/counseling field. She previously earned associate’s degrees in nursing and in pastoral ministry from Hesston (Kan.) College and a bachelor of science degree in Christian ministry from Tabor College, Hillsboro, Kan. She is a member of Whitestone Mennonite Church, Hesston, Kan.

Gretchen Krause

Gretchen Krause (g’05) graduated May 22, 2010 with a master's of divinity degree with a concentration in youth ministry from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Ind. Krause is pursuing an employment opportunity.

She previously earned a degree in Christian ministry with a youth ministry concentration from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan. She is a member of Bethel Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake, Minn.

Ken Reddig

Nate Tofteland (g’02) and Deborah Kroeker (g’02) recently graduated from the Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita Pediatric Residency program.

Out of five awards given, three went to them. Nate received two awards and Deborah received one.

They each received an award for recognition of outstanding service and care given above what was expected. Nate will be on the faculty at KUMC – Wichita, and Deborah will be on the KUMC faculty in Kansas City.

The program director made special mention of students from Tabor. She said they come well prepared and display the highest of standards, exhibiting integrity. This was a moment to praise God for his work on our campus and among our people.

Matt Esau (g’05) was recently hired as the art director at Bethel College (Mishawaka,Ind.) in the marketing office.

Christy Goentzel (g’00) graduated from Emporia State University in May 2009 with a master’s in Library and Information Management (MLS). She is currently a librarian at Brooks Middle school in Wichita, Kan.

Leaving a Legacy “Tabor has had a big impact on our family by preparing me (Ron) and our three sons for employment and for service in our churches and communities.
