EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT
Robert Hendricks Deputy Director of Business Services
OCT. 2023
Employee Spot Light
The employee spotlight aims to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore American Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace.
This month, we would like to introduce, Robert Hendricks, from the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance at the American Job Center.
1. What do you like most about the work you do here?
The best part of my job here is helping people start a well-paying career that will provide them with a secure future. Opportunities like apprenticeships, On-the-Job training programs, and career skills training classes are valuable ways to begin a successful career. I enjoy informing folks about these great opportunities and helping them get started.
2. What is the most exciting/interesting/challenging project you’ve worked on here?
I’ve worked on many exciting and interesting projects over the years, but if I had to pick one, I’d say the first Business Summit that was held in 2019. We had a small team of 6 people who put their heart and soul into making the event successful. The event was held at Salisbury University and was completely maxed out with 250 people from eastern shore companies attending. We provided breakfast and lunch and handed out gift bags. There were speakers from local, state, and national levels and 12 separate breakout sessions on various business-related topics. The feedback from surveys was extremely positive. We intended to make it an annual event, however COVID stopped that.
3. How long have you been with Maryland Workforce Exchange inside the American Job Center?
Nine years, and I have enjoyed every one of them.
4. How did you get started in the industry?
I started in the workforce development industry by driving the One-Stop Job Market (now AJC) mobile unit. This was after a long career in the medical equipment field. I wasn’t familiar with workforce development, so it was all new. While working on the mobile unit, I took every opportunity to learn more about WIOA, workforce boards, and apprenticeships. I’m still learning and discovering new things daily, which is cool.
5. What drew you to apply for this position and why?
I thought it would be fun to be out in the community helping people find employment and career opportunities. I was right!
6.What do you enjoy most about working in your department?
The people I work with. We have an awesome team in Business Services. Their enthusiasm and dedication just blew me away. I’ve never worked with a better group of folks before. The support and assistance I get from the entire LSWA organization, TCC, and MDOL is terrific!
7. What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?
It’s not just a job it’s an adventure!
8. What was your dream job or profession when you were a kid?
I wanted to be an architect when I was a kid. Legos and Lincoln Logs were my favorite toys. I used to build elaborate buildings and structures (at least, I thought) using these toys. Later, in high school, I would draw house designs on graph paper during boring lectures. As I got older, I veered off into the computer field and never pursued the architect dream.
HOW TO GET ALONG WITH YOUR COWORKERS
Since you may spend more time with your coworkers than with anyone else, it is essential to have at least a decent relationship with them. Hopefully, it will be even better than that. Harmonious workplace relationships can make going to work a pleasure and help boost your career.
According to a survey by Olivet Nazarene University, 82% of Americans in full-time jobs say they consider someone at work to be a friend. While on average respondents said they saw 41% of their colleagues just as coworkers, they saw 35% as either onlyat-work friends or real friends. Only 2% were seen as enemies.
While you don't necessarily have to be friends with colleagues, you do need to have positive relationships with them. Follow these tips to get along with your coworkers
By Dawn Rosenberg McKay
September 13, 2022
Build Good Relationships From the Start
Building strong bonds takes time, but it begins on your very first day at a new job. Get things off to a good start by being friendly to everyone you meet. If you find it difficult to make small talk, remember that a warm smile goes a long way.
Ask questions and graciously accept help and advice when others offer it. If you get invited to join others for lunch, go. It'll give you a chance to get to know your colleagues and let them know you're interested in building relationships with them.
Once you get your feet wet, don't be afraid to offer to pitch in and help others when they need it Showing initiative and
Respect Your Colleagues
You don't have to be friends with all your colleagues, but you must demonstrate respect for one another. The primary way to do this is to avoid doing offensive things. For example, clean up after yourself, don't take anyone else's food from the refrigerator, call out sick when necessary to keep from spreading your illness, and don't steal credit for someone else's work If a coworker tells you that a particular behavior annoys them, try your best to avoid it unless the request is unreasonable.
Don’t Bring up Cringe-Worthy Topics
Sometimes colleagues become friends, at least while at work. It's great if you are entirely at ease with them, but be wary of feeling so comfortable that you don't think any subjects should be off limits. Some topics can cause awkwardness, and therefore you should avoid them, especially if you're not close friends.
Some controversial subject matters, for example, politics and religion, could even incite arguments that might lead to discord in the workplace. Others, like your sex life, may cause embarrassment. Wait until you're with your friends and family to discuss them outside the workplace.
Find A Way to Get Along With Everyone, Even the Most Difficult People
The saying "you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family" should be expanded to include coworkers. You can't choose them either A few hopefully not too many may be difficult (just like some of your relatives).
Regardless of how annoying they may be, find a way to get along with everyone, whether it's a chatterbox, a gossip, a delegator, a complainer, or a credit grabber. It will make your life much more pleasant
Practice Good Office Etiquette
Good manners are needed on the job as much as they are anywhere. Remember this whenever you are around your coworkers and always be polite to them.
When making phone calls, either personal ones on your cellphone or job-related calls in your cubicle, don't distract anyone who is trying to work Keep your voice down and have personal conversations in private.
Be Kind to Your Coworkers
By Dawn Rosenberg McKay September 13, 2022
You should be helpful to your coworkers all the time, but also perform random acts of kindness that catch them off guard. For example, bring a colleague coffee and a cookie on a dreary afternoon or offer to stay late to help him or her complete a big project with a looming deadline.
Don't Spread Malicious Gossip
Spreading gossip at work will get you into trouble, whether the information you share is accurate or a rumor. Although it may be tempting to share juicy details, resist the urge to talk about your coworkers. Doing so will result in your appearing to be untrustworthy and leave everyone worried they could be your next subject.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How do you get along with difficult coworkers?
Most of us have to deal with difficult people at work at some point in our careers. First, check yourself: Are you really sure this person is a problem and you're not overreacting? Could it be that you have hot buttons that you need to work on yourself?
If not, explore ways to address the situation. If you decide you need to act, ask to have a private discussion with the difficult colleague, then explain what you're feeling and how it impacts you. Try to remain pleasant and agreeable as you talk to them They may not be aware of what they're doing or how it's impacting you. Try to reach an agreement about supportive actions going forward.
What is okay to share with coworkers?
It's easiest to talk about what you shouldn't share. Sensitive topics include religion, politics, your sex life, troubles at home, intimate details about health problems You should also avoid frequently sharing complaints about work or talking about how much you want to move up or move out of the organization.
Some of these are fine to talk about if you've established close friendships with colleagues, but you may want to share them in private or away from work.
Key Takeaways
Getting along with colleagues can not only make working more pleasant, it can also help boost your career. Relationship-building starts on your first day in a new job. Good manners, respect, and general kindness toward your colleagues go a long way
Resist oversharing or talking about sensitive topics that can alienate colleagues.
Stay away from gossiping about colleagues.

QR CODES
By M. Cherone
Have you noticed small boxes embedded on flyers these days? These boxes are QR codes, two-dimensional barcodes that can be scanned with a smartphone or QR code reader to access information or perform actions quickly. Look for them in this month's Job Journal. Here's a simple guide on how to use them:
1. Check your smartphone: Make sure your smartphone has a camera or a QR code reader app installed. You can find numerous QR code reader apps on Google Play Store or the Apple Store.
2. Open the QR code reader: Open your smartphone's QR code reader app. You might have to download a QR code reader app if you use an Android phone. If you use an iPhone, the app will automatically open when you launch your camera.
H O W T O U S E T H E Q R C O D E
3. Scan the QR code: Point your smartphone's camera towards the QR code and align it within the frame displayed on your screen. The QR code reader app will then scan the code.
4. Take action: Once the QR code is successfully scanned, the app will interpret the code and take appropriate action. It can open a website, display text, initiate a phone call, send an email, or perform various other activities based on the encoded information. Why not try this technology out today? Scan the code below and follow and like us (Lower Shore Workforce Alliance’s) social media page. We appreciate your support!
BE TECHNOLOGY SAFE NO MATTER WHAT
Hackers can create malicious QR codes which send users to fake websites that capture their personal data such as login credentials or even track their geolocation on their phone.
*The QR codes inside this Job Journal have been reviewed and approved but always be technology safe.

Embrace the Spirit: Wearing Halloween Costumes at Work
Halloween, the second spookiest time of the year, with Tax Day ranking first place, is not just for trick-ortreating and carving pumpkins. It’s a chance for adults to unleash their inner child and indulge in playful fun. One exciting way to celebrate Halloween is wearing costumes, even at work. (That is right, you read that correctly.) While wearing a Halloween costume at the office may seem unconventional, it can foster a positive and lively atmosphere.
