Through our collective resources and expertise, we aim to ensure that every young adult in our community receives the support required to thrive in their personal and professional lives. Lower Shore Workforce Alliance - Business Services Department Updates
With the proper training and support, anyone can achieve their career goals and find the success they deserve. Also, the Department of Business Services is dedicated to assisting businesses in fulfilling their employment requirements. We provide vocational training and apprenticeship programs to equip individuals with the necessary skills to excel in their careers. Recently, we offered free training for forklift operation, and you can add your name to the waitlist on our website. Please note that we currently do not have any dates scheduled for forklift training. Our primary objective is to gain the confidence of businesses by providing them with the required expertise.
The Business Services department is fully committed to building solid relationships with businesses and providing them with the support they need to succeed in their employment endeavors. We are grateful to all those who participated in the Small Business Blitz, which was a testament to the power of partnership and community. With the help of the Workforce Team, we visited over 300 small businesses in just one week, reinforcing our belief that anything is possible when we work together. Employee Spot Light The employee spotlight aims to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore American Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace. This month, we would like to introduce, Lashika Bonner, from the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance - Youth Services Department at the American Job Center. 1. What do you like most about the work you do here? What I like most about the work I do here at LSWA is the Community Outreach, connecting and building relationships with different agencies and individual youth in our communities. 2. What is the most exciting/interesting/challenging project you’ve worked on here? The most exciting, engaging, and challenging project I’ve worked on here is earning trust and rapport with the youth that I serve, getting them to understand that my purpose is not to hurt them but to help them by assisting them to understand who they have the potential to be with a bit of assistance and motivational guidance. 3. How long have you been with Lower Shore Workforce AllianceYouth Service Department inside the Lower Shore American Job Center? I have been with LSWA (Youth Services Department) for 1 year and 5 Months
4. How did you get started in the industry? I’ve always worked in industries that did some human service. I came to LSWA after finishing my Health and Human Services studies and wanted to utilize my Degree but still help people. 5. What drew you to apply for this position and why? What drew me to apply for my current position was the opportunity to learn something new and be allowed to be innovative. I learned from one of the previous industries I served “If nothing changes, nothing changes.” 6.What do you enjoy most about working in your department? What I enjoy most about working in my department are all the individuals I work with who create a loving, helpful, warm, and willing to put the work in atmosphere. Everyone in my department contributes to our department being a great space to learn, grow, and be creatively YOU! 7. What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job? One thing I wish people knew about my job is that our community needs to understand the value of these programs and how they can benefit all of us. LSWA offers a range of opportunities for both youths and adults and if more individuals were to take advantage of these resources, our community could significantly prosper. As someone closely associated with this program, the potential for growth and development is immense. I fervently hope that with greater awareness, more people will recognize the benefits of this program, and our community will thrive as a result. 8. What was your dream job or profession when you were a kid? My dream job as a kid was to become a Neurosurgeon.
TECH TALK: Unleashing the Power of Innovation HOW TO USE THE QR CODE

Have you noticed small boxes embedded on flyers these days? These boxes are QR codes, two-dimensional barcodes that can be scanned with a smartphone or QR code reader to access information or perform actions quickly. Look for them in this month's Job Journal. Here's a simple guide on how to use them: 1. Check your smartphone: Make sure your smartphone has a camera or a QR code reader app installed. You can find numerous QR code reader apps on Google Play Store or the Apple Store. 2. Open the QR code reader: Open your smartphone's QR code reader app. You might have to download a QR code reader app if you use an Android phone. If you use an iPhone, the app will automatically open when you launch your camera.
3. Scan the QR code: Point your smartphone's camera towards the QR code and align it within the frame displayed on your screen. The QR code reader app will then scan the code. 4. Take action: Once the QR code is successfully scanned, the app will interpret the code and take appropriate action. It can open a website, display text, initiate a phone call, send an email, or perform various other activities based on the encoded information. Why not try this technology out today? Despite your best efforts to evaluate a job and company carefully before accepting a new position, there may be occasions when you dislike your new job. Whether the problem is the work environment or the role itself, you may realize after starting a new position that it's not right for you. However, there are some things you should do before you decide to quit your new job completely. In this article, we discuss steps you can take if you find yourself saying "I hate my new job." 10 things to do if you hate your new job Before you quit your new job and look for a position elsewhere, consider these actionable steps:
1. Identify exactly what isn't working The first thing you should do is to determine exactly why you're unhappy with your job. When you start a new job, it's normal to feel an extra level of uncertainty or even anxiety, but feelings of discomfort generally go away as you gain confidence in your position. However, it's also possible that the position wasn't what you were expecting or what the hiring manager promised you. By identifying exactly what you dislike about your new job, you can better evaluate whether you should stay or start looking for a job elsewhere. 2. Evaluate whether the situation could change After identifying exactly what you don't like about your position, the next step is to decide whether the problem is temporary or something that isn't going away. For example, the reason you don't like your new job could be that you're still not feeling confident in the role, or perhaps it's because you're working on a project you don't enjoy. Both of these problems are temporary. If you stay in the position, you may grow more confident and enjoy it more. If the problem is a specific project, if you keep your job, you can finish the project and move on to something you enjoy better. However, if you're in a sales position and you realize after starting that you don't enjoy sales, then you may just be a poor fit for the position. 3. Talk to your manager If you recognize that the problem isn't a temporary one, talk to your manager. Hiring and training new employees is costly for companies, so they naturally want to retain talented new hires for as long as they can. Approach them to have a candid conversation about what you don’t enjoy about the job.
When you approach them, try to present solutions for how you could adapt your role to better fit your interests and skills. Perhaps with additional training and coaching, you would feel more comfortable and confident in your position, which would help you better enjoy your position. Focus on the benefits There are typically aspects of every job that are unappealing, whether it's the commute that's the problem or tedious responsibilities. However, take time to reflect on what you could take away from the position if you stayed with the company. For example, consider if there are advancement opportunities available in six months or a year or if this job could be a step along your path to growth within the company. If that's the case, staying in the role would make sense, even when you don't enjoy the work. You could also consider whether there are certain benefits that could offset the dissatisfaction in your position. For example, the job might allow you to work from home and spend more time with your family. Think carefully about all aspects of your job and the benefits you enjoy because of it prior to leaving. 5. Give yourself a timeline Sometimes employees feel like they dislike their jobs when the ultimate problem is that they haven't had the time to grow comfortable in the position. They may also not have had enough time to get to know their coworkers yet. Create a timeline for yourself where you will commit to learning the job to the best of your ability. During that time frame, find a mentor, meet with your manager regularly and develop relationships with your colleagues. These steps can have a big impact on how you feel about your job. At the end of the time frame, you can re-evaluate how you feel about the position and whether you want to stay with the company or leave.
6. Consider pursuing professional development If you decide to stay in your position, consider looking for professional development opportunities outside of the office. You could take an online class or obtain a certification that would qualify you for other types of positions. You may find that with some professional development, you could qualify for more advanced opportunities in your own company that you would enjoy more or that you could qualify for a position you would like at another company. In addition to developing new skills, you could also develop new contacts that could lead to other opportunities at a later time. 7. Network with other professionals Even if you're still debating about whether you want to stay at this job, it's never too early to start networking. If you love the company you work for but don't enjoy the work, inquire whether there might be opportunities in other departments. Talk to people in different departments to assess how they feel about their jobs and whether there could be current or upcoming openings that are a better fit for your interests and skills. Developing a personal network within your own company is one of the best ways to make a move if you decide you want to stay with that business but move into a different role.
