Opening Remarks
Second Chance Resource Fair
“Every person deserves a second chance because, many times, a second chance can change a person's life forever." Unknown
Second Chance Awareness Month is an annual observance that highlights the importance of providing individuals who have experienced legal situations with opportunities to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the workforce. A key initiative during this month is the Second Chance Fair, organized by Maryland Workforce Exchange and spearheaded by Tawanda Redding. This event brings together various employers from different industries to connect job seekers with employers willing to give them a second chance.
The Second Chance Resource Fair is not just a job fair but a beacon of hope for many individuals looking to turn their lives around and secure stable employment. Employers who participated in the Second Chance Resource Fair understood the value of giving people a second chance. They recognized that a person's past does not define their future, and everyone deserves the opportunity to prove themselves and succeed. By opening their doors to candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, these employers are changing individual lives and enriching their workplaces with a wealth of talent and resilience. Employers have reported many benefits and positive outcomes after hiring individuals seeking a second chance.
Lower Shore Workforce Alliance representatives attended the Second Chance Resource Fair to show support and provide resources to anyone who needed additional assistance navigating what the tri-county had to offer. This event was a testament to the transformative power of second chances, and it remind us that by providing opportunities for individuals to rebuild their lives through gainful employment, we not only strengthen our communities but also support and build families that need help. This effort can create a more compassionate society where everyone has the chance to thrive and succeed.

The interactive job journal is a community resource showcasing Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester activities. It offers a range of features that make it easy for users to explore job listings, event details, and additional resources with just a few clicks. Here are some tips on how to get the best usage out of this interactive job journal:
Exploring Events Details:
When browsing the journal, you will find flyers highlighting various community events. You can access more information about the event by clicking on a flyer and emailing the event coordinator for further details. This feature allows you to engage with events that interest you and stay informed about what's happening in your community.
Navigating Employment Actions:
If you are specifically looking for job opportunities, you can click on titles like "Looking for work" to access the employment section of the journal. Here, you will find listings of available jobs and hiring flyers. Clicking on a hiring flyer will take you directly to the company's page, making it convenient to explore job openings and apply online.
Utilizing Community Pages:
The journal also includes icons for specific counties like Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester. Clicking on these icons will direct you to dedicated community pages that provide information about local events and activities within each county. This feature lets you focus on events and opportunities in your area of interest.
Engaging with Videos:
In addition to text-based content, the journal may feature videos showcasing interviews, event highlights, or job-related information. Watching these videos can offer a more interactive and engaging experience, giving you a better sense of the community events and job opportunities.
By taking advantage of the interactive features and resources the job journal offers, you can enhance your job search experience, connect with your community, and stay informed about local events. Whether you're looking for employment opportunities, networking events, or community activities, the Interactive Job Journal is a valuable tool to help you stay engaged and informed.
WHATISEMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?
DR.YOVANDABROWN
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is being smarter with feelings regarding better relationships, stronger wellbeing, greater effectiveness, and higher quality of life. EQ is a solution, a foundation for striving and thriving in success within the workplace, schools, organization, families, and communities – it is the skill needed to thrive in complex and uncertain times. EQ equips individuals to have self-awareness about how they feel, think and act (and these 3 are all interchangeable.)
Increased EQ helps build strong relationships, reduces stress, defuses conflict in the workplace, and boost morale in the workplace. EQ skills range within one of these categories: interpersonal relations, selfawareness, self-control, and social awareness. Interpersonal relations require one to have empathy and active listening skills. Selfawareness, self-control, and social awareness all require one to learn to recognize and identify complex feelings one is having.
EQ empowers individuals to be calm in a crisis, develops skills to defuse irate customers, employees, family members and even our own selves, and to accurately understand and label the feelings one is experiencing professionally/personally. When children and adults learn critical emotional intelligence skills, life is no longer viewed as transactional, instead it is transformational – becoming the change to make the world a better place.
Along with EQ another skill for the workplace and our day-to-day life is kinesics (reading body language). Unbeknownst to most, words make up 7% of communication, manner and tone make up 38% of communication and nonverbal signals make up 55% of communication. Total nonverbal communication is 93%.
Our bodies involuntarily communicate and can be one of our strongest forms of communication by giving cues to others in the workplace situations – daily conversations, meetings, interviews, etc. Overall body language displays our feelings let’s say in a meeting – If you are sitting with your arms crossed in a meeting, it can indicate you are closed off rather having your arms relaxed by your side expresses your openness and willingness to listen.
Accurately interrupting nonverbal cues helps you to understand your own feelings, emotions, and attitudes as well as others. Being aware of communication strategies also helps you make known your feelings in situations, circumstances, and vicissitudes.
Dr. YoVanda Brown is a Transformational Coach certified in Unlocking Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and speaks on an action plan (EQ-inAction) for using emotional intelligence in daily life and the workplace. Also, certified in Kinesics, speaks and trains on the ways in which your body communicates with the atmosphere around you. As a Body Language Expert, teach skills you need to “read” everyone around you including yourself. Founder of Chavah (Giver of Life) which provides coaching, counseling, crisis management services and more. Chavah’ motto is: Your Choices Control Your Climate.
Also employed by the State of Maryland, Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning (DWDAL) as a Workforce Development Specialist III at the Lower Shore American Job Center, Salisbury, MD.
COMMUNICATING WITH NONVERBAL CUES: EXAMPLES OF BODY LANGUAGE
Through body language, people can both consciously and unconsciously communicate and convey emotions without uttering a word. Understanding common cues can help you present yourself positively as well as read how others are receiving you. In this article, we define body language and provide examples of both positive and negative body language.

The Eastern Shore of Maryland relies heavily on the food service industry, which accounts for over 12% of jobs in the Tri-County area. However, as the tourist season approaches, the region faces a potential worker shortage due to the absence of J1 workers who couldn't return last year because of the pandemic. This poses a challenge for business owners who need help finding sufficient staffing levels to meet the demands of the upcoming season.
With the 2024 season approaching, employment rates are anticipated to increase significantly. According to the JobsEQ Employment Forecast Comparison for LSWA (Worcester, Wicomico, Somerset), this rise in employment is predicted to be the highest it has ever been.
Here is a breakdown of positions and wages in the Food Service Industry (Source: JobsEQ Occupational Wages, Average Annual in LSWA (Worcester, Wicomico, Somerset) 2023Q3).
The Food Service Industry is a crucial part of the tourism business and is essential in providing food to tourists and locals. The industry offers a variety of positions, and most of these positions do not require any formal experience in the field or a high school diploma/GED. However, specialized management, culinary arts, and mixology workers may need some schooling. Repeat clients and total sales often measure success in this industry, which is vital for the steady growth of local areas and economies.
It is an opportune moment to begin exploring prospects within the industry. The sooner one applies, the greater the array of opportunities available to secure employment at the establishment of one's preference. Whether one's forte is producing dishes for patrons while enjoying melodious tunes or engaging with customers while providing refreshments, there is undoubtedly a place for everyone in this sector.
