Ending the Year Shore Strong: Celebrating Community Achievements and Economic Growth As we approach the end of another eventful year, it's important to take a moment to recognize collective accomplishments and celebrate the hard work and dedication that has propelled our community forward. Throughout the year, our region has made significant strides in various areas, from enhancing community

outreach and increasing opportunities for education and employment to fostering economic growth and upskilling our workforce.

These achievements have strengthened our local community and set the stage for continued progress and prosperity in the coming years.

One of the cornerstones of our success has been our proactive approach to fostering employment opportunities and supporting our workforce.

Through active participation in job fairs and community outreach initiatives, we have connected job seekers with prospective employers, creating a robust network that benefits individuals and businesses.

By facilitating these interactions, we have contributed to reducing unemployment and strengthening the local economy.

Another pivotal development has been the expansion of mobile routes for the

community, ensuring that essential services and resources are more accessible to all residents. By increasing the reach of mobile services, we have addressed transportation barriers and improved the overall quality of life for individuals who may have previously faced challenges accessing vital resources.

Moreover, our efforts to enhance community engagements have not gone unnoticed. During the small business blitz, we strengthened our community/business relationships and collaborated with other workforce development organizations to create a workforce team. Over 300 small businesses were visited during the Small Business Blitz and informed of our valuable services. Business results that could assist small businesses in growing.

Due to his effort, we would like to create more programs to help small businesses in the TriCounty.

We have made significant strides in education and skills development by successfully establishing free accessible forklifts and construction academic classes. By offering these specialized skill sets, we have equipped individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the industries.

Therefore, it promotes career advancement and economic empowerment without community.

These students who have completed these courses have earned employment. Also, the entry of young adults and dislocated workers into the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) programs, facilitated by the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance held inside the American Job Center, has been a game-changer.

These programs have empowered barriers and pursued meaningful career pathways by providing access to education, training, and

support services, ultimately strengthening our workforce and fostering economic resilience.

As we reflect on these achievements, it becomes apparent that our collective efforts have laid a strong foundation for continued progress and prosperity.

Building upon these successes and remaining committed to furthering our community's growth and development is essential.

We can ensure the positive by prioritizing collaboration, innovation, and inclusive practices.

The momentum we have generated this year will serve as a platform for even more significant accomplishments in the future. In closing, let us celebrate the end of the year with pride and optimism, recognizing the impact of our collective endeavors in shaping a brighter future for our community.

Together with our community, we have demonstrated resilience, determination, and a shared commitment to progress. As we look ahead, we are poised to achieve even greater success in the days and years.

We cannot thank every agency or person who contributed to our success, but we know the ones who were a big help to our mission, which we serve.

Employee Spot Light The Employee Spotlight aims to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore American Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace.

This month, we would like to introduce, Leslie Porter-Cabell, Director of Lower Shore Workforce Alliance.

1. What do you like most about the work you do here? a I love creating partnerships - public, private, non-profit, and educational institutions to leverage resources for a common goal that will benefit targeted markets. It’s exciting to move organizations to collaborate on what is often non-traditional and realize it’s a win-win. b. I like that the work transforms and improves the lives of our residents on the Lower Eastern Shore. Career Exploration, assistance with a resume, soft skills to education and training to employment programs for youths and adults funded through multiple federal, state, local, and philanthropic organizations. c. like watching staff create programs and events and realize relationships internally and externally that yield referrals, collaborations, and partnerships. d. I like that I have a talented and engaged staff that are not only skilled and creative but kind people.

2. What is your position, and tell me briefly your primary responsibilities? a. Workforce Director for the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance (LSWA).

LSWA is under the umbrella of the Tri-County Council for the Lower Eastern Shore which includes Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties. LSWA is the Workforce Development arm, the Tri-County Council is the Economic Development arm, and Shore Transit is the transportation arm – workforce, economic development, and transportation are inextricably linked. b. The directive for this position is workforce development which translates to upskilling residents for livable wages for the primary industry sectors in the region (Health Care, Skilled Trades, Manufacturing, Hospitality, and federal and state organizations, as well as emerging industries like fiber optics.

3. How long have you been with the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance? a. I’ve been with the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance for two years. I was tasked to expand our funding resources, expand, and engage the LSWA board, employers, and those seeking employment, and leverage existing resources and partnerships to advance training to employment initiatives as well as on-the-job training initiatives which have been realized with expanded federal funding.

4. How did you get started in the industry?

I got started early, mostly due to my background. My parents instilled a sense of fair play. They were active in the Civil Rights movement (March on Washington 1963) and later my mom was active in the Equal

Rights Amendment and Voting Rights initiatives. My Mom, Lee Porter just turned ninety-seven and still is the Executive Director of the Fair Housing Council of Northern New Jersey. It was through the FHCNJ that assisted Senator Corey Booker’s family move into Bergen County, NJ. I am acutely familiar with redlining, blockbusting, and racial steering. When we moved to Bergen County, we were steered only to certain neighborhoods and census tracts. My parents decided that they would move wherever they “damn well pleased.” Simply being a black-educated professional with the required income was insignificant to racism as redlining was federal policy. My dad, Richard Porter was a WWII Veteran and obtained his Mechanical Engineering degree at City College of New York, one of the few colleges that accepted Blacks and Jews. At the time of the move to Bergenfield, he was designing missiles and weapons for the government, Picatinny Arsenal – Armament Research Development Center but could not stay in hotels while on travel to White Sands, New Mexico, and other missile testing sites. All of this is during my lifetime. b. While in college one summer I worked for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program of Bergen County, NJ, and was tasked with tracking socio-economic data research for the county. Although the county is considered wealthy there were surprising pockets of areas that did not have basic services including the Ramapo area, settled by Ramapo Mountain people, a multi-racial group representing the Indigenous Lenape Indians, Dutch, and Africans, often referred to as Jackson-Whites. Later, at Boston University, I studied planning and received a BA in Urban Studies. My senior project was the Boston Redevelopment taking place in the South End of Boston and Roxbury, MA which fostered the removal of those less wealthy, poor, and minorities under the “redevelopment plan” or gentrification. It’s still utilized as “the strategy” for urban

development, however, short-sighted, and of course inequitable.

Consequently, gentrified neighborhoods often price out the artists and local businesses which attracted the new residents to these areas, long-term residents can no longer afford to live there, and workers cannot afford to live there or commute there. Development should enrich an area and create a mix of socio-economic backgrounds for residents (young and old), small businesses, and artists. Local businesses and residents should be able to remain in developing neighborhoods with affordable housing and commercial rates at a sliding scale. We must be more creative and progressive when envisioning communities. c. I’ve worked for community development corporations, worked on environmental impact statements (socio-economic development) for the MBTA Orange Line Replacement Project, worked in transportation (rail and bus planning); On-the-Job Training Supportive Services (US DOT, FHWA), and developed Youth initiatives and career ladder pathways to name a few – I’ve been around for a while- I’m a “Baby Boomer”.

5. What drew you to apply for this position and why? a. I thought there was a job that I could draw from all my experiences. I was prepared for this role as well, having lived in various states and cities on the East Coast allowed me to see what works and what continuously does not work. We have a lot of catching up to do in the areas of promoting youth apprenticeships, paid internships, and soft skills in the school systems. The average age of workers in the skilled trades (i.e., transportation, automotive, construction) is early to midsixties. Employers in the United States are playing catch up and a far behind our European counterparts in creating apprenticeships, and industry pathways and making that connection with young people

(secondary and post-secondary). I am thrilled that Maryland is taking this initiative through multiple venues: Maryland Blueprint for Education, Apprenticeships (Youth/Adult), and Juvenile Justice initiatives to name a few.

6. What is one thing you wish people knew about your job? a. The staff is a team – we are here for you and are actively engaged in outreach, and our Mobile Unit provides extended outreach.

7. What was your dream job or profession when you were a kid? a. As a kid, I expected to be a lawyer to ensure justice and equity.

TECH TALK: Unleashing the Power of Innovation HOW TO USE THE QR CODE

Have you noticed small boxes embedded on flyers these days? These boxes are QR codes, two-dimensional barcodes that can be scanned with a smartphone or QR code reader to access information or perform actions quickly. Look for them in this month's Job Journal.

Here's a simple guide on how to use them: 1. Check your smartphone: Make sure your smartphone has a camera or a QR code reader app installed. You can find numerous QR code reader apps on Google Play Store or the Apple Store.

2. Open the QR code reader: Open your smartphone's QR code reader app. You might have to download a QR code reader app if you use an Android phone. If you use an iPhone, the app will automatically open when you launch your camera.

3. Scan the QR code: Point your smartphone's camera towards the QR code and align it within the frame displayed on your screen. The QR code reader app will then scan the code.

4. Take action: Once the QR code is successfully scanned, the app will interpret the code and take appropriate action. It can open a website, display text, initiate a phone call, send an email, or perform various other activities based on the encoded information.

The 8 Biggest Future Of Work Trends In 2024 Everyone Needs To Be Ready For Now

The world of work is constantly changing. Concepts that our parents or grandparents grew up with, such as the nine-to-five office and the job-forlife, are being consigned to the past.

Technology is clearly a driver behind much of this. However, societal changes such as aging populations in many developed countries and a growing understanding of the environmental impact of working practices are important factors, too.

In 2024, we can expect to see further development of many of the trends that have reshaped our working lives in recent years. However, the impact of breakthrough technologies (particularly AI) will be felt more keenly than ever as the rate of adoption accelerates. This wave of digitization and transformation will affect everyone, even those outside of the high-tech industries and tech-focused roles where it is already the norm.

This set of trends focuses on changes that will impact our working lives on a day-to-day basis. Look at it as a heads-up for those who want to get ahead. Or for bosses or managers, it can be thought of as pointers for where to focus your efforts to ensure your workforce is ready to face the biggest challenges of 2024.

Generative AI This is probably the big one. There’s a popular line of thought today that AI won’t replace jobs – but people who can use AI will replace people who can’t. Generative AI tools are quickly evolving to the point where they offer solutions that can increase efficiency in just about any task or line of work. But remember – a big part of becoming a proficient AIaugmented worker is understanding its limitations and knowing where you still need to apply human creativity, compassion and innovation!

Sustainable Working Practices In my opinion, this is the most important area in which we

have to make conscious changes to our behavior.

Understanding and reducing the impact of our actions on our environment and planet requires rethinking many aspects of our working lives, from where we work to how we create and implement circular processes that reduce wastage and encourage recycling and reuse of resources.

Future Skills As technology transforms more areas of work and business, ensuring we’re equipped to use it effectively is a priority for us all, from understanding the importance of data-driven decision-making to developing an awareness of cyber threats, developing

emotional intelligence and empathy to counter for technology’s lack of it, and adopting the shift in mindset needed to work or lead effectively when your team is spread around the world. Perhaps no one can be expected to affect all of these changes, but understanding which are relevant to your role and responsibilities is the key.

Employee Experience Organizations understand that today, customer experience is key to developing lifelong relationships and generating recurring business.

People 18 years or older and not currently enrolled in high school can register for classes to improve their reading, writing, and math skills or to learn English. The lessons also help prepare for the GED® tests and advance in the workplace. These courses are available in all counties of Maryland, especially on the lower eastern shore.

Apprenticeship Program Water and Wastewater Operations Specialists are imperative to our community for access to clean drinking water and to ensure wastewater effluent is returned to the environment properly. But with close to 50% retiring in the next five years, communities will fail to prosper or eventually even exist if replacements aren’t put in place AND properly trained. A growing population and increased demand for water and wastewater treatment services plus an aging workforce will drive employment growth and qualified, certified Operators will be in high demand.

Our nationally registered Apprenticeship Program has been developed in response to the industry’s need to train the next generation of skilled workers and standardize training across the state of Maryland. This 2-year program is designed to train operators through both coursework and onthe-job, experience-based learning and will culminate in MDE certification.

The Ticket program is free and voluntary. The Ticket program helps people with disabilities progress toward financial independence.

Lower Shore American Job Center Mobile Workforce Services Unit The AJC Mobile Unit is a program that brings employment search and career services to communities using modern technology. It's equipped with seven computers that have cellular Internet access and a generator, making it a self-contained resource for job seekers.
