LOWER SHORE WORKFORCE ALLIANCE
Making more of a positive difference and impact in 2024. As we embark on a new year full of hope and determination, we recognize that our society is still adapting to the changes brought by COVID-19. Our ways of doing things may have evolved, but one constant thing is supporting our youth. From infancy to early adulthood, this age group still needs our guidance, mentoring, and assistance to thrive. The saying "It takes a village to raise a child"
still holds today as we work together to create a brighter future for the next generation. Think of mentoring as being similar to an apprenticeship program, which both play a crucial role in shaping the future of our youth, providing them with guidance, support, and the tools they need to succeed. As the statistics demonstrate, investing in mentoring programs for young people benefits the individuals involved and society.
According to a study by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, youth with mentors are 55% more likely to enroll in college and 78% more likely to volunteer regularly and more likely to hold leadership positions. These numbers highlight the tangible impact that mentorship can have on the prospects of young people, seeing them on the path toward personal and professional success. Moreover, the presence of a mentor has been shown to affect a young
person’s mental and emotional well-being positively. Furthermore, mentoring has a direct impact on reducing delinquent behaviors among youth. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Justice, young people who have a mentor are 46% less likely to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to start drinking alcohol. By providing positive role models and a supportive environment, mentors help steer young people away from risky behaviors, ultimately contributing to safer and healthier communities. At this time, many people believe mentoring is the answer. But we would like to take it even farther to say apprenticeship programs for the young adults can also build a young person’s life. Through apprenticeship programs this to will provide young adults with invaluable hands-on learning experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. According to
the data, 70% of young adults who participate in apprenticeships report that the hands-on training has significantly enhanced their understanding, reinforcing the vital role of experiential learning in skill development. The impact of apprenticeships on career readiness can not be overstated. In 2023, 80% of apprentices expressed confidence in their preparedness for the workforce upon completing their program, citing the acquisition of industryrelevant skills as a critical factor. Furthermore, 65% of employers report that apprentices are more readily adaptable to the demands of their industry, underlining the effectiveness of apprenticeship programs in cultivating a skilled and versatile workforce.

Apprenticeship Program Water and Wastewater Operations Specialists are imperative to our community for access to clean drinking water and to ensure wastewater effluent is returned to the environment properly. But with close to 50% retiring in the next five years, communities will fail to prosper or eventually even exist if replacements aren’t put in place AND properly trained. A growing population and increased demand for water and wastewater treatment services plus an aging workforce will drive employment growth and qualified, certified Operators will be in high demand. Our nationally registered Apprenticeship Program has been developed in response to the industry’s need to train the next generation of skilled workers and standardize training across the state of Maryland. This 2-year program is designed to train operators through both coursework and onthe-job, experience-based learning and will culminate in MDE certification. FoodWorks Culinary Job Training Program What is the FoodWorks Culinary Training Program? The FoodWorks program offers a fresh start to low-income individuals with 12 weeks of intense culinary training. FoodWorks students learn basic cooking skills while converting fresh produce and other perishable foods into healthy meals for distribution to those in need.
Located at Maryland Food Bank headquarters, the program training takes place in classrooms and in the Charles T. Bauer Community Kitchen, a state-of-the-art culinary facility opened in 2010. Over the course of 12 weeks, Maryland Food Bank’s Executive Chef guides students through a curriculum that includes fundamental culinary techniques, nutrition, menu planning, and job-seeking skills.

One of the beautiful things about living in a small city is that news spreads fast, even before you get a chance to say anything. With that, we want to officially announce that we will join a legacy of serving and loving our community. We will take over the Junior Board Cafe and plant a Together Cafe location at TidalHealth. We just started our lease and will take the rest of this week to prepare to open on January 8th. We will keep you updated on the hours and our menu offering. We are beyond honored to have been considered to join this fantastic organization. We don't deserve it, but we are grateful for God’s grace to open this door for us. At Together Cafe, we aim to love our community in a way that brings us together. That creates family and offers a place of healing to those in need.
