Employee Spot Light
by LESMD
The purpose of an employee spotlight is to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore American Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace. This month, we would like to introduce an employee, Tyler Horton from the Department of Maryland Workforce Exchange at the American Job Center.
1.What do you like most about the work you do here?
What I genuinely enjoy the most about my work is truly helping people. I've worked in service-related industry jobs before where you helped people but it was usually only a temporary occurrence in their lives for which you assisted them. In my position as a Workforce Development Specialist with the Maryland Department of Labor, helping customers obtain employment is a positive benefit to their lives long term in many ways.
2. What is the most exciting/interesting/challenging project you’ve worked on here?
Every day is an exciting project with our work at the AJC. You meet new people with new stories and challenges, of which you are trying to help put their life puzzle together, so to speak, by allowing them to gain employment.
3. How long have you been with Maryland Workforce Exchange inside the American Job Center?
I have been a part of the MWE team since May of 2022.
4. How did you get started in the industry?
A friend referred me to an opening for this position last year, and I have genuinely enjoyed the first 13 months of my journey in this industry since.
5. What drew you to apply for this position and why?
I applied for the position because I wanted to get into an industry where I could meaningfully help people in their lives somehow. I am a Workforce Development Specialist with the Maryland Department of Labor.
6.What do you enjoy most about working in your department?
Helping people in a truly meaningful long lasting way in their lives. I've seen customers come in on the verge of emotional breakdowns due to the situations they were in after losing former jobs. Seeing those people with confidence and a renewed sense of purpose after assisting them with gaining employment is something that truly gives me a sense of satisfaction in what I do.
7. What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?
If anything, the amount of overall services that we provide as a staff to help job seekers propel toward their next move in their career. The MWE Staff can assist with everything from resume reviews so that you can stand out among those applying for positions across the workforce spectrum. We can also help you prepare for interviews via mock interview consultations, amongst many other aspects of searching for that next career. 8. What was your dream job or profession when you were a kid?
I always wanted to be in the media one way or another, which I accomplished with an over 20-year career in radio across the Delmarva Peninsula and five years as the Stadium PA Announcer for the Delmarva Shorebirds.
We greatly appreciate your dedication to providing outstanding customer service. It's an absolute pleasure to work with you. Thank you for everything.
