Do You Need a Job?

Do you need a job? Or additionaltrainingtosecure a better job? Or maybe you're an employer who is seeking better trained workers.

Like so many things in life, we don’t know what’s available until we need it. TheLowerShoreWorkforce Alliance in Salisbury offers jobtraining, helpinfinding work, resume writing and evenchildcarewhilepeople useservicesattheAmerican Job Center office. It’s an important resource for job seekersandemployersalike. https://www.shoplocaldelmarva.com/do-you-need-a-job

A community resource for residents of Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties, its mission is to strengthen the local workforce. The LSWA is a division of the Tri-County Councilandislocatedinside theAmericanJobCenteroff Route 50, across from WorWic Community College in Salisbury. American Job Centers,with2,500locations across the United States, werepreviouslyknownas

one-stopjobcenters. One of the most important components to all that’s offeredbytheLowerShore WorkforceAllianceistheJob Journal which is published on the first Friday of each month.Itrepresentsallthe partnerships in the agency that can benefit the community, Cherone said. Thereareresourcesforlocal events for families, employment listings and educationinformation.

July 13, 2023

It’s much more than a job board, she said. Job postings are included, usually more than 100 entries, but there are articles on Zoom interview tips, training opportunities, food pantry information, etc. Live links throughout make it extremely easy to obtain more info or fill out applications. Check out July’s Job Journal, published last Friday, with a whopping 60 pages. You can subscribe as well; it’s already sent to 1,200 people. The LSWA Facebook page is also an excellent resource.

What kind of jobs are included in the Job Journal?

*jobs that don’t require a lot of experience or a college degree, entry level, beginning employment

*jobs for those lacking a high school diploma to those with a two-year college education

*part-time and full-time

*seasonal

“You don’t have to have a high school diploma” to find a job, emphasized Cherone. She said she scours the internet for job postings, looking for opportunities online and in ads, and includes links to the positions in the Job Journal, making it easier for someone to see what’s available. Often local businesses will contact her to include their openings. Cherone verifies every listing she finds, so you can be sure the company is actually hiring, saving you a lot of time in your job search.

Mekia Cherone, American Job Center coordinator, explained the many facets of employment help available to the community. Here are the main components, then I’ll focus on the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance in particular.

The American Job Center has several parts:

1. The American Workforce Exchange. This deals with job search assistance and techniques, resume assistance, and “dislocated workers” – those who have lost jobs and need assistance filing unemployment.

2. Department of Rehabilitation Services. DORS helps Marylanders in the tri-county area with disabilities to go to work.

3. Telamon Corporation. Seasonal farmworkers can receive additional training to go further in life. It’s part of the National Farm Worker Jobs Program. English as a Second Language classes are offered here.

4. Department of Social Services. The main branch is on Baptist Street in Salisbury, but people who need assistance with services can go to this location for help.

5. Lower Shore Workforce Alliance, LSWA. Services are provided for adults, youth, and employers, all to help people find jobs and acquire skills, and helping local businesses find and retain quality employees.

Now to focus on the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance.

Leslie Porter-Cabell, workforce director, said a wide array of services are offered, and most are federally funded. Services offered include funding certifications for job seekers, supporting on the job training, and partnering with companies to find skilled workers. Some of those companies and organizations include the Vehicles for Change - Delmarva, which helps those who want a second chance become mechanics, TidalHealth hospital, the MAC Center (Maintaining Active Citizens senior center) and Wor-Wic Community College. EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

JOB JOURNAL AUGUST 2023
Tyler Horton Workforce Development Specialist

Employee Spot Light

The purpose of an employee spotlight is to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore American Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace. This month, we would like to introduce an employee, Tyler Horton from the Department of Maryland Workforce Exchange at the American Job Center.

1.What do you like most about the work you do here?

What I genuinely enjoy the most about my work is truly helping people. I've worked in service-related industry jobs before where you helped people but it was usually only a temporary occurrence in their lives for which you assisted them. In my position as a Workforce Development Specialist with the Maryland Department of Labor, helping customers obtain employment is a positive benefit to their lives long term in many ways.

2. What is the most exciting/interesting/challenging project you’ve worked on here?

Every day is an exciting project with our work at the AJC. You meet new people with new stories and challenges, of which you are trying to help put their life puzzle together, so to speak, by allowing them to gain employment.

3. How long have you been with Maryland Workforce Exchange inside the American Job Center?

I have been a part of the MWE team since May of 2022.

4. How did you get started in the industry?

A friend referred me to an opening for this position last year, and I have genuinely enjoyed the first 13 months of my journey in this industry since.

5. What drew you to apply for this position and why?

I applied for the position because I wanted to get into an industry where I could meaningfully help people in their lives somehow. I am a Workforce Development Specialist with the Maryland Department of Labor.

6.What do you enjoy most about working in your department?

Helping people in a truly meaningful long lasting way in their lives. I've seen customers come in on the verge of emotional breakdowns due to the situations they were in after losing former jobs. Seeing those people with confidence and a renewed sense of purpose after assisting them with gaining employment is something that truly gives me a sense of satisfaction in what I do.

7. What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

If anything, the amount of overall services that we provide as a staff to help job seekers propel toward their next move in their career. The MWE Staff can assist with everything from resume reviews so that you can stand out among those applying for positions across the workforce spectrum. We can also help you prepare for interviews via mock interview consultations, amongst many other aspects of searching for that next career. Signup for an account at mwejobs.maryland.gov to see how we can help you today!

8. What was your dream job or profession when you were a kid?

I always wanted to be in the media one way or another, which I accomplished with an over 20-year career in radio across the Delmarva Peninsula and five years as the Stadium PA Announcer for the Delmarva Shorebirds.

We greatly appreciate your dedication to providing outstanding customer service. It's an absolute pleasure to work with you. Thank you for everything.

What is the future of work?

Just like the world at large, the world of work shifts and changes over time. The future of work refers to an informed perspectiveonwhatbusinessesandother organizations need to know about how work could shift (given digitization and other trends), plus how workforces and workplacescanprepareforthosechanges, bigandsmall.

While no one can predict the future with absolute certainty, it’s clear that the world of work is changing, just as the world itself is. Looking ahead at how work will shift, along with trends affecting the workforce and workplaces, canhelpyouoryourorganization prepareforwhat’snext.

To map the future of work at the highest levels, theMcKinseyGlobalInstituteconsiders potential labor demand, the mix of occupations, and workforce skills that will be neededforthosejobs.

Our analysis looks at eight countries (China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States) with diverse economic and labor market models, which together account for nearly half the world’s population and over 60 percent of its GDP.

These are some of the main findings from the latestreportonthefutureofwork:

The future of work was shifting even before COVID-19 upended lives and livelihoods. But the pandemic accelerated three broad trends thatwillcontinuetoreshapeworkastheeffects ofthecrisisrecede:

The pandemic propelled faster adoption of digital technologies, including automation and AI. Companies used them to control costs or mitigate uncertainty; they also deployedthesetechnologiesinwarehouses, grocery stores, call centers, and manufacturing sites to either reduce workplace density or deal with surging demandforitems.

What’s the future of remote working? And hybrid?

COVID-19’s spread flattened the cultural and technological barriers standing in the way of remote work. The pandemic sparked a structural shift in where work takes place, at least for some people.Butwillitlast?

Our analysis of the potential for remote work to persistlookedat2,000tasksusedinroughly800 jobsineightfocuscountries.Itshowedthat20to 25 percent of workforces in advanced economiescouldworkfromhomeintherangeof three to five days a week—which is four to five timesmoreremoteworkthanpre-COVID-19.

It’s worth noting that more than half the workforce has little or no opportunity for remote work. For example, jobs that require on-site work orspecializedmachinery, suchasconductingCT scans, need to be done in person. Of these jobs, many are low wage and are at risk from broader trendstowardautomationanddigitization.
