PREFACE This instructor’s manual was written to facilitate use of Counseling: A Comprehensive Profession, Eight Edition, by Samuel T. Gladding. This manual provides several essential features that make it a useful tool in the teaching of counseling. First, the manual is organized on a chapter-by-chapter basis. Instructors who wish to concentrate on material covered in a particular learning unit can easily do so. Second, in the beginning of each chapter is a brief overview of the main points covered in that unit in the textbook. Following this review is a list of key terms, concepts, and people discussed in the chapter. Thus, instructors are able to remind themselves of both general and specific aspects of a chapter in a relatively short period of time. Third, after the chapter overviews are the chapter outlines. These outlines are summaries of each chapter’s contents. The outlines will help instructors remember important points made in each chapter along with their corresponding references. Fourth, near the end of each chapter in the manual are a number of multiple choice and essay questions that cover the material discussed in the unit. The multiple choice format is the primary way licensure and certification tests are structured. Thus, students can demonstrate their mastery of the subject matter while simultaneously gaining practice in a particularly important way of answering professional competency questions. The essay question can be used with or in place of the multiple choice questions in testing students in a more comprehensive and integrative way about events, concepts, trends, and people discussed in the chapters. Fifth, each chapter contains classroom exercises. Instructors can use these exercises to start group discussions or to help students realize in a more experiential way points made in the chapter. Finally, each chapter finishes with an annotated list of additional resources that instructors can use to supplement the material in the textbook. The focus of these resources is on audio and video productions. Possible ways to access these materials are included in the lists. Overall, you will find this manual user-friendly and a crucial supplement to your work as a teaching professional in the field of counseling.
