Preface Steve Beebe and Tim Mottet’s Business And Professional Communication: Principles And Skills For Leadership is like a breath of fresh air in the form of a business textbook. The authors revive and realign theories and practices in the twenty-first century world of business through a set of five principles: First, Be mindful of others when communicating; Second, Use verbal communication effectively; Third, Be aware and carefully interpret nonverbal communication; Fourth, Listen and respond thoughtfully and empathetically to others; and Fifth, Adapt message to others in order to enhance understanding. These principles, which are essential to leadership, are reiterated throughout the text. The instructor can choose to follow the text consecutively, chapter by chapter, or use it to give theoretical support to practical, hands-on experiences that will benefit the students as they enter the workforce. I design my class more from a practical perspective. A memorandum is written after the syllabus is distributed. In this memo the students communicate their goals, desires, and expectations of the class. This also gives the instructor an immediate writing sample. Chapter Fourteen “Writing for Business” covers the essential information regarding format and writing style for the memo assignment, as well as subsequent writing projects. After a formal oral introduction of themselves, students choose groups of four or five, in which to work for two projects during the semester, interviews and an informative symposium. The resume and cover letters are written at the beginning of the semester which is in preparation for the interviews that follow. By the groups sharing their resumes, they get to know one another and help create effective resumes that will be useful for the job search experience. The interview project also helps students understand the format of a well planned interview, typical questions that are asked, and responses to these questions that are clear, concise and thoughtful. Interpersonal communication is studied by exploring one’s own styles through measures that are included in Chapter Five, “Adapting to Differences.” These measures include their willingness to communicate by filling out the WTC measure; their communication apprehensions as measured by their Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24) score; and their measure of argumentativeness (ARG). Communicating with other cultures, genders, and personalities in an empathetic manner is an important skill in the world of business, specifically from a leadership perspective. Conflict management and negotiation strategies are also pertinent issues. Chapter Six “Relating to Others at Work” explains the different conflict styles and how to resolve conflict so that it improves the workplace climate. Not only is the student encouraged to explore his or her own conflict style but also learn to adapt the conflict style that is most suitable to the situation. After the midterm examination, the course focuses on team work and public presentation as the groups prepare for the informative symposium on a current business-related topic. The following chapters help prepare the students prepare for professional presentations from organization to delivery: • Chapter Eleven "Developing Your Professional Presentation” • Chapter Twelve “Delivering Professional Presentations” • Chapter Thirteen Achieving Your Presentation Goad: Informing, Persuading and Relating”

Teamwork is covered in Chapter Nine “Collaborating in Teams” with the expectation that these class groups actually enjoy a team building experience while working on the symposium. They have already completed the task of the interview together and must once more inspire each other to strive for “a unified commitment, collaborative climate and standards of excellence” when deciding on a challenging topic for the business symposium. One member could be chosen to be the facilitator to help coordinate the flow of the speeches and the visuals so that the team is presenting as a strong, cohesive unit. Once the informative symposium is completed the students then decide on a topic for their persuasive speech. This may or may not be business related. Some students choose to use the suggested format of the motivated sequence as a sales pitch. Others choose to try and inspire their classmates to volunteer, or to travel, many representing their “own” countries. Actually all of these ideas are applicable to business when one considers the expanding global market and the need for community service. The semester culminates with the final group/team activity where each member analyzes his/her group experience. These experiences are shared with group members on the last day of class. This is a day of celebration and students are encouraged to bring food to share. Usually they will bring in a dish that represents their own culture. After a semester of hard work, the teams deserve a day of festivity.
