“Build for Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.” These are the words from Exodus 25 that call upon us all to create and sustain sacred spaces for God and community. TBT is a Kehillah Kedosha, a sacred synagogue community serving those who seek a warm place to pray, an inspiring place to learn and socially gather, fostering opportunities to cultivate a feeling of belonging, purpose and meaning. Our dynamic community has continued uninterrupted throughout the past year of the pandemic, adapting quickly to provide creative, engaging virtual programming, weekly Shabbat, High Holiday and festival services, musical concerts, travel opportunities, kids’ programming, Preschool, Religious School and so much more. I am beyond proud of the various modalities that we have utilized that has kept Temple Beth Tikvah thriving throughout these challenging and troubling days! And I am beyond grateful for the way that our professional staff and lay leadership has leaned in to meet the challenges finding new and creative ways to nourish, support and nurture our TBT families. I hope that you will join us for the 34th Annual Meeting of our Beth Tikvah congregation via Zoom on Sunday, May 16 when we will install our new officers and trustees, honor the outstanding leaders who have carried us through this time of pandemic and hear about the future needs of the community that will help to build our very bright collective future, ensuring a strong TBT for the generations to come. Register for the Annual Meeting Here As we prepare for an exciting year ahead for our congregation, it is with extreme pleasure that I share the wonderful news that TBT will be partnering with Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in the training of a future rabbi. Beginning in mid-August, we will welcome Taylor Baruchel to our clergy team. She will be with us for the 2021-2022 academic year serving in the capacity of TBT’s first rabbinic intern. In addition to general rabbinic duties Rabbi Intern Baruchel will be focusing her time with us in deepening engagement and outreach programming for the Millennials and Zillennials of our TBT community. Her office hours and contact information will be listed in the August issue of the

Taylor Baruchel firmly believes in the transformative power of a good question. Like a match to flame, a question is the spark that ignites intellectual and spiritual discovery. Dedicated to being a lifelong learner, she holds it to be a duty to question, struggle and engage with all aspects of Jewish life and tradition. From sacred texts to kosher cookbooks, there is always something new to learn and be inspired by. Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Taylor is a rising fourth year rabbinical student at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. A graduate of Dawson College’s Professional Theatre program, she received her M.A. in the History and Philosophy of Religion (2016) after completing a B.A. honours with great distinction in Religion (2013), both from Concordia University. Passionate about discourse, Taylor served as a representative of the Jewish community on the Christian Jewish Dialogue of Montréal (CJDM) from 2013-16. She studied in Israel and worked with Project Hillel in Jerusalem in 2017, offering support, guidance, and teaching English to Israeli youth who had left the Ultra-Orthodox world. Most recently as the Senior Jewish Educator for the Hillels of Georgia, Taylor helped Jewish college students across the state find and explore their own personal Torah. In this role Taylor led the distinguished Jewish Learning Fellowship, teaching 150+ fellows over a two-year period. Currently studying remotely at the LA campus of HUC-JIR, Taylor is excited to join the dynamic clergy team of Temple Beth Tikvah, Roswell as their rabbinic intern for the 2021-22 academic year. She also bakes a mean challah often topped with her signature, patriotic, maple syrup glaze. Whether grabbing a socially distanced coffee, digging into some texts, or relaxing around the Shabbat table it is Taylor’s hope that we can come up with great questions together.

Cantor SUMMERTIME FOR THE JEWS! (Shabbatot…..Confirmation……Shavuot……Tisha B’Av)

In the Gevurot prayer we praise God for being the Source of all and the One who either brings on the ‘winds and rain’ or the ‘dew’, depending on the time of year. We are conditioned to think about the seasons in both the Hebrew and Civil calendars. But here in this country, or within much of Reform Judaism we tend to think of the academic school year’s summer vacation – as a vacation from all things Judaism. This is not the case - by any means. Just as day turns to night and then to day again, we go from the six ordinary days of the week to Shabbat in a never-ending cycle. SHABBAT – every 7th day There is ALWAYS Shabbat: Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall. In times of ease and in challenging times. The cycle of creation goes on (God willing). And in the Hebrew Calendar we will complete the days of “Counting The Omer” (essentially, the fifty days between Passover and Shavuot) and greet the next major Jewish Festival: Shavuot. SHAVUOT – evening of May 16 (ARA); day of May 17 (incl. Yizkor) What is Shavuot all about? Again, it often falls off the radar of Georgian Jews whose lives are regulated by the academic school year - falling during exams, graduations or the beginning of summer plans. Shavuot has both agricultural and spiritual significance. It is a time to gather in the harvest (take note of the full moon on Erev Shavuot) and it is known as “Z’man Matan Torateinu” – the season of the giving of our Torah. This year, TBT will partake in the Erev Shavuot offerings presented by the ARA (Atlanta Rabbinic Association). On the morning of Shavuot our services will include an excerpt from the Book of Ruth, as it references the time of harvest and brings our attention to Ruth’s adopting the religion of her Israelite mother-in-law Naomi. The service also includes Yizkor (Memorial Service) , like that of Yom Kippur afternoon and the morning services for last days of Pesach and Sukkot. If you have lost a loved one recently or many years ago, I hope you will consider coming to services or watching them livestreamed, for the beauty and meaning of the entire service, but especially for the comforting psalms and readings for Yizkor.

CONFIRMATION – Erev Shabbat Services: May 14 Did you know that…. “Confirmation” was the first religious innovation made by Reform Judaism? It was introduced as an alternative to “Bar Mitzvah” in 1810…..in KASSEL, GERMANY (no relation to me….my folks hail from Lithuania). Even then, the ceremony was held for sixteen-year-olds. Traditionally there has been a connection between Confirmation and Shavuot, where older adolescents accept the responsibility of receiving Torah. It is a group experience rather than the individual experience of becoming Bar/Bat/B Mitzvah. Our TBT Confirmands will be leading services on May 14, full of their own creative writings and leading of prayers. TISHA B’AV – evening of July 17 (community service hosted by TBT); day of July 18 Tisha B’Av translates as the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av. It commemorates the destruction of the 1st and 2nd Temples in Jerusalem as well as other tragic events in Jewish history. While these events happened so long ago, we do not have to stretch our imaginations too far to connect to feelings of personal and communal loss as well as the fracturing of our peoplehood. We chant the Book of Lamentations in one of the most beautiful chants, reserved specifically for this biblical book. We collectively look for the place of hope within our laments.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR

President

What is engagement? No, I’m not referring to the concept of matrimonial engagement. I’m asking what do you consider as being an engaged member of TBT? During the six years that I have been on the Board of Trustees, we have continually discussed how to get and keep congregants engaged in the synagogue. This sounds simple, but every person has their own concept of what that means. To some, it means regularly attending services. To some it means attending programs and events. Some enjoy the educational opportunities for them and their children and to learn about their heritage. Some see it as their social community. To others it means identifying with their religion by being part of a community, regardless of their degree of activity. Some see it as a means of ensuring the future of our people, the concept of Dor V’dor. The list goes on, but to most, it is a combination of these reasons. As president, I hear a lot about how people feel at TBT. The vast majority of comments are thoughtful and positive. People feel heard and cared for here at TBT, but sadly I sometimes hear people say, they don’t feel engaged. Maybe what they are really saying is that they don’t know how to get connected. Much like the matrimonial concept of engagement, synagogue engagement requires two-way participation. When I think back on my onboarding to an engaged life at TBT, it all started back in 2014 when my wife and I joined the congregation. We started out first by attending Friday night services at least once a month, and we tried some of the different programs and activities (some to our liking, and some not so much) but slowly we began forming relationships with other congregants. We stayed aware of programs and celebrations by checking the website and reading the Kol Tikvah. There was always something to do. In time I was invited to join the Board and I found that involvement on the Board was deeply meaningful. We looked at different Chavurah opportunities for a couple of years and eventually found one that was comfortable to us. In 2017, we participated in Rabbi ShuvalWeiner’s trip to Israel which was a profound event on our religious perspective but also afforded us the opportunity to spend extended time with congregants we had not previously known and made some really terrific friendships. After that trip, participation in the Mussar classes and the Melton Seminars got me to again make new congregational friends while learning more about our heritage and beliefs. The point of telling my story is merely to illustrate that to become engaged in our TBT community, it takes some time and effort on everyone’s part to feel the sense of community and belonging. We still have plenty of time in our “outside” life, but I always know that when I need spiritual comfort, TBT is where we turn. During this pandemic year TBT has provided an incredible amount of programming opportunities, in addition to streaming services, yet coming back together will take some time for everyone to get reacclimated. Yet, what a perfect time to find that new space for yourself here. So, give it a try - grab your mask and come to an event, come to an occasional service, participate in a program or two and you too will start to feel connected, engaged and part of this wonderful community. TBT RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Well, the 2020-21 school year has come to an end. For our religious school, it was a year of zoom classrooms, of virtual Hebrew, of parking lot programs, of family gatherings under the school awning. Our students did an incredible job of staying as focused and involved as they could. Our teachers and madrichim pulled out all the stops to connect with and engage their students. We learned on our computers, brought discussion points to the dinner table, and had some opportunities to connect in person. Despite the challenges we faced, it was a good year. But, we are all looking forward to the 2021-21 school year. TBT’s religious school plan is to be back in person. It may look a little different from years past, with more outside time and larger learning spaces, but we plan to be back on-site. I am very excited, and I hope you are too.

Registration materials will be coming soon. We are also planning for some summer opportunities to keep the kids up on their Hebrew and connected to their community. I recognize that you receive many emails from TBT, but it’s only to ensure that you are aware of all we have going on... and it’s a lot! So, be on the lookout for important religious school information coming soon. Thank you to everyone who played a role in making this past school year successful. PRESCHOOL UPDATE What a great year we had at preschool! The children had so much fun celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut. The whole school took a trip to Israel and the plane ride was fantastic! We all went dancing in Tel Aviv, shopped at the shuk, visited the Western Wall (Kotel ), swam in the Dead Sea and had snack of falafel, humus, pita bread and oranges. What an exciting adventure! The school organized an ice cream fundraiser to raise money to purchase a new laminator. We had close to 100% participation and the children left our school sugared up and very happy. Our classes are beginning to wrap up the year and we will have end of year celebration ceremonies for the Pre-k and KRP (kindergarten readiness program) classes. It has been an exciting, fun year and we look forward to everything that next year will bring.

It takes a village to run a preschool so a big thank you to our incredible Rabbi ShuvalWeiner, Cantor Kassel, Joe Dunn, President of TBT, as well our office staff Becky, Kim and Eric. Our teachers, Rachel, Faye, Marla, Abby, Alicia, Paula, Lisa and Shana have been incredible. I am happy to share that we have now been reaccredited with COGNIA. This was a learning experience, and I am so proud of how well we did to achieve such high marks on our re-accreditation. Our camp registration is open and we begin our first day of camp on Monday, June 7. We are also taking registration for the 2021-2022 school year. I’m excited to announce that we are having our Kindergarten Readiness Program (KRP) back for another year. Please feel free to share our school information on social media.

SIMCHAS Sidney Hayden McAuliffe, daughter of Jason & Maggie McAuliffe, will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 8, 2021. Sidney has 2 younger siblings, Birdie and Harris and is the granddaughter of Riki Stern and Chris and Marilyn McAuliffe.

She is also excited to share this day with both of her great grandmothers, Bunny Goldkrantz & Grace Burchardt. Sidney spent 7th grade distance learning through Richards Academy, taking a year off from Saint Francis School, where she had previously been a student. While she is looking forward to starting 8th back at Saint Francis in the fall, Sidney enjoyed the challenge of learning how to successfully manage her time and studies from home, while taking an advanced course load, and is grateful for the experience. As part of her Mitzvah project, Sidney focused on experiences that explored Jewish History. In addition to reading several accounts of women who lived through the holocaust, Sidney participated in tours of Jewish history museums and a live-guided tour of the Jewish Quarter in Prague. She also recorded a series of video interviews, beginning with her great-grandmother, creating a family history chronicling the stories of the female lineage of which she learned so much about and is proud to be a part of.

Max Kalina will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May 22, 2021. He is the son of Jessica and Steve Kalina, and big brother to Duncan Kalina. He is the grandson of Linda Perlman, Curtis Weinstein, Sara Kalina, and the late Elliott Kalina, of blessed memory, for whom he is named. Max is an honors student at High Tower Middle School and loves playing alto sax, studying stinging insects, playing video games with his friends, and loving on his two dogs, Drake and Annie. This upcoming summer will be Max’s first attending Camp Coleman. This past year Max has been busy with his mitzvah projects, which include fundraising for The Southern Poverty Law Center, The Atlanta Community Food Bank, and organizing a trivia night to end ALS, a cause dear to his heart. His efforts raise over $6,500. Max would like to thank Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, Jay Weiner, Cantor Kassel, and Rachel Wilson for the great care and dedication they have shown in helping him prepare for this milestone in his life.

Caleb Glickman will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May 29, 2021. He is the son of Marc and Kristi Glickman, younger brother to Madison Giles, and older brother to Brayden Glickman and the family dog, Luna.

Lauren Pearl Cohn will be called to the Torah on June 5, 2021. Lauren is the daughter of Michael and Marlene Cohn, and little sister to Evan. She is the granddaughter of Ruth & Lee Zendel of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Harry Cohn of Boynton Beach, FL and the late Pearl Cohn (‫)ז״ל‬.

Caleb is a 7th grader at Crabapple Middle School where he enjoys studying History. Caleb plays travel baseball for East Side Baseball in Marietta, GA, where he has led the team in getting hit by pitches over the past 4 seasons! In his spare time, Caleb enjoys walking through downtown Roswell with his friends, hanging at Roswell Area Park, and spending time at home with his family. As part of his Bar Mitzvah study, Caleb interviewed his grandparents, Jane and Andrew Glickman, on what it was like to be a Jewish child growing up during an earlier time period and also learned some incredible stories about the experiences of his great grandfather, Frank Glickman, who was captured and held prisoner by the Germans during World War II. Caleb also learned that his maternal grandfather, Samuel Pollard, served as an Army Captain in the Pentagon during World War II. Caleb would like to thank Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and all of his Hebrew school teachers along the way for helping him to achieve this special milestone in his life.

Lauren is a 7th grader at Dickerson Middle School in Marietta where she has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll consistently for the past two years. She especially enjoys and excels in math and science. Lauren is very creative and has taught herself graphic design skills. Among other things, she designed the logo for her bat mitzvah. In the past year, Lauren learned how to bake challah from scratch and spent several Fridays baking challahs, putting together Shabbat bags, and delivering them to Jewish seniors in the community. Lauren is also participating in Yad Vashem’s twinning program and during her service will be remembering Perla Vurms, a young girl who perished during the Holocaust and did not live to become a bat mitzvah. Lauren will help carry on her memory. The Cohn Family is excited to share this simcha with friends and family from near and far. They are also very appreciative of the Rabbi, Cantor, and Amy Peskin’s help in preparing Lauren for this important milestone.

SIMCHAS Ashton Samuel Honeycutt will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on June 12, 2021. He is the son of Tracy and Karen Honeycutt and the brother to Ethan.

He is the grandson of Eddie & Ann Honeycutt of Richmond, Virginia, and Stanley & Bobbie Kopkin of Gainesville, Georgia. Ashton is a 6th grader at Simpson Middle School in Cobb County. Ashton is an avid mountain biker. He races on the Trojan Mountain Bike Team and for the NorGA Mountain Bike Team. Because of Ashton’s love of mountain biking, for his Mitzvah project, he chose to partner with Bearings Bike Works. Bearings Bike Works helps kids who are less fortunate learn life skills and bike skills and be able to earn a bike of their very own. He collected over 25 bikes, $3620, and many other needed bike accessories to donate. We would like to thank Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, Cantor Kassel, and Amy Peskin for guiding, inspiring, and preparing Ashton or his Bar Mitzvah.

Robert Eugene Scott III (a.k.a. Robby) is graduating from Georgia State University with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree; concentration in Media Entrepreneurship. Robby is the son of Robert & Julie Scott.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN TBT Friends: From October 2020 through April 2021, the Annual Campaign raised over $124,000, which was 27% above our 2019-20 Campaign, exceeding our goal in a unique year! Thank you all very much for your generosity. The campaign fulfills a key role to support operating and programming expenses and allows us to maintain diverse and plentiful offerings for our congregants. We received donations from 140 donors, or nearly 37% of our members – also an improvement from last year’s campaign. Our average gift this year of $882 was 13% above the 201920 campaign.
