SELICHOT September 21, 2019 Teshuvah means “return.” Traditionally, it is the central challenge for us in Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah. It involves self-examination (heshbon hanefesh), forgiving ourselves and others (selichot), seeking help (bakashot) and a plan for cultivating new behaviors (middot). There is teshuvah to be done with ourselves, with other people and with the Blessed Holy One.

A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SHUVAL-WEINER Chodesh Tov and blessings for this new month of Elul.

Elul is a time of preparation. It is the time to get our “houses” so to speak, in order before we gather as a community for the New Year.

Each one of us is asked to cultivate the practice of cheshbon hanefesh, taking stock of ourselves; our personal activities, thoughts and conversations of the past year. Considering where we have improved and where we still need to make positive changes in order to be better forms of ourselves. There are many areas for us all to focus upon: kindness, generosity, humility, self-love, just to name a few.

This month, I would like us all to think about how much time and energy we all spend on being Judgmental of the actions of others. The assumptions and generalizations that we make about one another.

For example, have you ever thrown dirty looks at a parent whose child is being too loud or throwing a tantrum?

Yes, we all are guilty of judging the actions of others.

We look down on them as if we are so much better … and that creates division between people.

Cantor Rachelle Nelson of Temple Beth Am wrote on this topic, reminding us that Jewish tradition has much to say on the topic of judging others. In chapter 19 of the Book of Leviticus we read “... do not judge your neighbor unfairly.

You shall not hate your kinsman in your heart. V’ahavta L’reyecha Kamocha Love your neighbor as yourself…Ani Adonai, I am your God.” Still we make judgement calls all the time. We point out the guy holding the sign on the street corner asking for help, assuming the worse of him. We judge the character of someone by how they dress, color their hair or adorn their body. We make assumptions about who someone is by their choice of friends, organizations they support or their political parties, and we judge the way others handle their personal lives all the time. Usually without ever really knowing the circumstances of their life.

Our tradition warns us against being judgmental, because the tradition is keenly aware that humans pass judgement upon one another all the time. All one has to do is to read Facebook these days.

Torah attempts to guide us to rise above such behavior via two modalities, Thou Shalt Not and Thou Shall -if one way doesn’t work, maybe the other will. If one struggles to understand “... do not judge your neighbor unfairly. You shall not hate your kinsman in your heart”, then try hearing the voices from the Mishna “..judge everyone favorably."

Maimonides interpreted this teaching to mean that since every soul is created B’tzelem Eloheim, in the image of the Holy One, then every person is believed to have goodness within them; thus one who judges another is obliged to look for those good qualities. In other words, when we look upon another and make assumptions about them, we must always do so fairly, and with loving kindness.

Can you envision a community where we spent our time looking at each other’s good qualities, as opposed to what we might dislike about them? Imagine how much warmer our community would be if we greeted each other with open heartedness and a countenance of acceptance and graciousness?

The month of Elul, prepares us for entering the ten “Days of Awe”. The most solemn of these days is one of selfreflection and pause; Yom Kippur. As we each pause, and examine who we are within ourselves and within our community, may we think deeply about how we are “viewing” others and the types of assumptions we may be making about one another.

In this new year of 5780, let us each choose to live a life of goodness and of communal wholeness. Let us each seek to nurture acceptance, tolerance and compassion.

Let us strive to change our single vision lens, in order that we might better appreciate the beauty and blessings of all the people we call fellow congregants and neighbors.

There is something for EVERYONE in our new machzor, “Mishkan HaNefesh”.

If you are a ‘traditional’ leaning Reform Jew – you will find that our new machzor contains many more of the traditional prayers than previous High Holy Day prayerbooks published by the Reform Movement.

If you are weak on your Hebrew reading skills or have not yet begun to read Hebrew, you will find transliterations of all Hebrew, helping you to more fully participate in the services.

If you have always wanted to know more about the sources and meanings of the liturgy, there are detailed notes at the bottom of most pages that are sure to satisfy your curiosity.

If you welcome fresh interpretations of the meanings of the prayers, you will find them on the left-hand side of the page-spread, modeled after our daily siddur (prayerbook), “Mishkan T’filah”.

There are a few bold changes in the presentation of the liturgy, all in the attempt to create a more meaningful prayer experience.

HIGH HOLIDAYS What are the “Days of Awe?” Rosh Hashanah is the first of the High Holy Days and begins a ten day period of soul searching that concludes with Yom Kippur. Tradition tells us that on Rosh Hashanah the names of the righteous are inscribed in the Book of Life, offering another year of life. For those who have unfinished business, judgment is suspended until Yom Kippur, when our good works and acts of repentance during those 10 days (teshuvah) to return to our higher selves. Synagogue services give us time to reflect and resolve, but prayer and meditation are not sufficient to wipe the slate clean. The only way to expunge sins committed against other people is by reaching out sincerely, offering apologizing and striving for forgiveness.

What do the words Rosh Hashanah mean?

Rosh Hashanah is Hebrew for head or beginning of the year. In the Torah, we read, “In the seventh month, on the first day of

the month, there shall be a sacred assembly, a cessation from work, a day of commemoration pro­claimed by the sound of the Shofar.” Therefore, we celebrate Rosh Hashanah on the first day of Tishrei, the sev­enth month of the Jewish calendar. The number assigned to the Jewish year changes on Rosh Hashanah based on ancient rabbinic reckoning of when the world was created.

What is done in the home for Rosh Hashanah?

The focus of home celebration is the evening meal served at the start of Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah menus vary among Jewish subcultures and from household to household, but two customs are pervasive: using a round challah (with or without raisins) as a symbol of the cycle of the year, and starting Rosh Hashanah with apples dipped in honey or agave as a harbinger of a sweet year.

Before the Erev Rosh Hashanah meal, the following blessings are recited: For candle lighting: Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav vitsivanu l’hadlik ner shel yom tov.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the cosmos, who has taught us the way of holiness through the Mitzvot and invites us to kindle the New Year light.

For wine: Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha-olam boray p’ree hagafen.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who makes the fruit of the vine.

For a Sweet New Year: Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheynu Melech Ha-olam, shehechiyanu v’keyamanu v’higianu lazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this moment For the round challah: Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha-olam, hamotzi lechem min ha’aretz.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

For apple sections dipped in agave or honey: Baruch Ata Adonai Eloheynu Melech Ha-olam, boray p’ree ha’eytz. Y’hi ratzon she’te’chadesh aleynu shana tova umetukah.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe who creates the fruit of the tree. May it be your will, Adonai, God of our ancestors, to renew us for a good and sweet year.

HIGH HOLIDAYS What happens in the synagogue for Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah is primarily a liturgical or synagogue holiday with a few core elements, the blowing of a shofar and distinctive holiday melodies, which are reprised repeatedly during Rosh Hasha­nah, and again on Yom Kippur.

Rosh Hashanah prayers sound the themes of judgment and repentance, and the recurrent image of God as a parent-ruler is given voice in one of the most memorable prayers and melodies of all the Jewish holidays, Avinu Malkeynu, “Our Parent -ruler is given voice in one of the most memorable prayers and melodies of all the Jewish holidays, Avinu Malkeynu, “Our Parent, our King.”

What is Tashlich?

It is traditional to go to a flowing body of water and participate in a ceremony called Tashlich, from the Hebrew for “send off’ or “cast away.” People symbolically cast away their sins/shortcomings by emptying crumbs from their pockets into the water, giving a fresh start in the New Year. In keeping with the health of the Chattahoochee & to water fo, we thrown duck food a mixture of fish duck food mixed with light bread crumbs.

What does Yom Kippur mean?

Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement.” Yom Kippur, the most somber day of the year is called Shabbat Shabbaton, the “Sabbath of Sabbaths” in the Bible. On this day devoted to reflection and repentance, the community dresses in white, a symbol of purity and healthy adults fast from all food and drink from sunset to sunset.

What happens in the home for Yom Kippur?

Although this is probably the least home-based of all holidays, it begins and ends with a family meal. The evening meal is cooked with a mind to the fast ahead, so generally it is neither too heavy nor too spicy. Unlike other festival dinners, candle lighting takes place afterwards, marking the official start of Yom Kippur and the fast.

After eating and before lighting the festival candles, it is traditional to light a candle in memory of family members who have died. Special yahrzeit (“year’s-time”) candles are available in the synagogue office or at area Judaica shops. These candles are lit without formal blessing, though some people say a silent prayer.

Kindling the Yom Kippur candles: Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheynu Melech Ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav vitzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Yom HaKippurim.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe who has taught us the way of holiness through the Mitzvot and calls us to light the Yom Kippur light.

Yom Kippur ends with a light break the fast meal. This repast has no formal rituals or ceremony apart from the blessing over bread, Hamotzi. Food prepared in advance is usually set out, buffet style, while family and friends discuss the relative difficulty of their fasts and the content of their rabbis’ sermons. It is a mitzvah to invite to your table anyone who might have nowhere else to break the fast. Many families contribute both money and canned goods to help feed the hungry. Here at TBT we collect food for Operation Isaiah for distribution to local food pantries.

How do we atone for our sins?

Yom Kippur atones only for sins between humanity and God, not for sins against another person. To atone for sins against another person, you must first apologize, righting the wrongs you committed if possible. Tradition teaches that this must all be done before the conclusion of Yom Kippur .

What is the Jewish definition of sin?

In Judaism, the word “sin” has different connotations than it does in our wider culture. “Sin” in Judaism is generally not something for which a person will be punished in the afterlife, but is rather an improper act for which one can ask forgiveness— not just of God, but of other human beings as well.

HIGH HOLIDAYS What is Kol Nidre?

Services begin with the haunting melody of Kol Nidre, the opening prayer and the name of the evening service. Kol Nidre is an Aramaic declaration that nullifies all the vows and promises that each person will make to God and to him/herself in the coming year, an acknowledgment of the weakness of human resolution. Tallitot are worn at this special evening service.

What happens at Synagogue Yom Kippur day?

Yom Kippur service runs throughout most of the day: Shacharit, the morning service, includes a Torah reading from Deuteronomy reminding us that God has given us all free-will, and calls upon us to choose the way of a meaningful and purposeful life. The morning Haftarah reading is Isaiah’s passionate sermon demanding jus­tice and decrying religious hypocrisy.

Why is the Book of Jonah read on Yom Kippur?

The Book of Jonah was selected for the haftarah reading for the Mincha (afternoon) service on Yom Kippur because God is represented there as the God of all nations. The Book of Jonah also addresses itself to another High Holy Days theme: that a person can abandon one’s baser ways, accept responsibility for one’s own actions, and return to righteous living.

What is Yizkor?

Yizkor is a service that recalls loved ones who have died. Yizkor takes place on Yom Kippur afternoon.

What is the Ne’ilah service?

Yom Kippur services conclude with Ne’ilah, from the Hebrew “to lock,” referring to the symbolic closing of heaven’s gates and the “book of life.” Many people stand throughout this short service. We invite all who wish to come up to the Open Ark, as individuals or as family units, to offer one’s own personal prayers. Ne’ilah concludes with a final blast of the shofar; the Tekiyah

Gedolah.

What is the meaning of the tradition to wear white on the Holy Days and especially on Yom Kippur? Why do we cover the Torah scrolls with white covers?

It is customary to wear white on the holiday, which symbolizes purity and calls to mind the promise that our sins shall be made as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18). Traditionally, Jews are buried in plain white garments. Wearing white on Yom Kippur reminds us of our mortality. Some wear sneakers or other rubber-soled shoes out of deference to the ancient practice of avoiding leather shoes, which were a symbol of luxury.

Here at TBT, we invite everyone to consider wearing white throughout the Holy Day season.

Why are the confessions done in the plural?

The communal confession is called the Vidui. It contains a litany of human sins, and the entire congregation recites it collectively and in the plural emphasizing communal responsibility for sins.

High Holy Day VOCABULARY High Holy Days: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur L’shanah Tovah Tikatayvu: “May you be inscribed for a good year.” This is the Rosh Hashanah greeting that expresses the hope that all friends and loved ones will be written in the Book of Life and granted happiness and fulfillment in the year ahead.

Shofar: The shofar is made from the horn of a ram. It is sounded every morning (except on Shabbat) during the month of Elul, the 30 days preceding Rosh Hashanah, on Rosh Hashanah itself, and again at the conclusion of Yom Kippur. Some say that its piercing sound is a “wake-up call” that reminds people to engage in the process of repentance.

Teshuvah: Literally means, “returning,” a Hebrew term for repentance.

Tzedakah: “Righteousness,” often mistranslated as “charity.”

Yahrzeit Candle: Memorial candle lit on the anniversary of a loved one’s death, and on those days when Yizkor is recited. Yizkor is recited on Yom Kippur.

Yom Tov: Literally “a good day.” The term has come to mean “holy day.” It is often pronounced Yuntiff (the Yiddish pronunciation) and the Ashkenazi holiday greeting is “Gut Yuntiff.”

ECEC UPDATE—SHERI BAKER The beginning of the school year is an exciting time at the Early Childhood Education Center at Temple Beth Tikvah. Classrooms are consumed with laughter, smiles, and wonder. The month of September is filled with lessons around Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It also the time of year that you will find our finest and youngest children dipping apples in honey, making round challahs, and singing happy birthday to our world. For children in our Early Childhood Education Center, these holy days provide a springboard for learning as they become engaged in the color of apples, the taste of different colored apples, and the different sizes. Who knew there was so much to know and learn about apples? Every moment spent with a young child can become a learning moment.

This is a fascinating time in our school, as our young children are just beginning their journey of figuring out who they are and being Jewish is critical to that discovery. It is an absolute joy and honor to be a part of that journey for every child in our school. I encourage all of you to take the time to see the happiness, learning, and self-discovery that evolves each day at our school.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL UPDATE—SUZANNE HURWITZ I know it’s somewhat cliché to say, but the High Holy Days are “late” this year. Obviously they are right where they are supposed to be; 5780 will come about as expected, right after 5779. But, a Rosh Hashanah at the end of September means more time to prepare, and for our religious school students, more time to learn about the meanings and traditions of our most sacred days. It is my hope that even our youngest students will understand the value in starting anew and asking forgiveness, appreciate the magic of our ancestors’ journey to freedom, and feel the excitement of beginning the reading of our Torah once again.

I know I will see your children at services and in our Kids’ Club, with their religious school classmates enjoying a snack in our sukkah, and taking a peek at the Torah scrolls in our sanctuary. I look forward to all that.

But, it’s actually the few weeks before the High Holy Days that I want to tell you about. Because before we even get to Rosh Hashanah, we have so much going on here at TBT. On September 7 th and 8th, Dorice Horenstein, our scholar-in-residence, will offer several learning opportunities for adults, sharing her unique views on spirituality and living well. The following Sunday, September 15th, we are hosting a mindful meditation class. Both programs take place during Sunday School… when you are already making the trip to temple! And of course, our Shabbat services are always an uplifting experience and a beautiful way to end a busy week for the whole family. We always have so much going on and I know that each person can find things that appeal to them.

Many parents drop their children off at religious school for 9:30 and pick them up at the end, asking them how their day was and what they learned. But temple isn’t just for the kids, and learning isn’t just for the young. We are proud to have unique opportunities at TBT for adults to be engaged in Jewish learning and community building.

Perhaps getting more involved in temple life can be a goal of yours. That way, when you do come for the High Holy Days, you will likely feel more connected to our warm and wonderful temple community, our kehillah.

RHONDA POVLOT, PRESIDENT Ahh, September has arrived. This is honestly my favorite time of year. The sound of the hustle and bustle in our beautiful building as we prepare for the coming High Holidays, Religious School kicks off and our many committees and programs start their year of activities. The smell of Fall is in the air. The leaves begin changing and nature takes her final bow before her winter rest.

As we prepare for Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Cantor Kassel have been working in our new machzorim to put together meaningful and sacred services for the High Holidays. Our new books, Mishkan Hanefesh, were a very kind and generous gift from the Rick and Wendy Winer Family Foundation. We would like to Thank Them Very Much! Mishkan Hanefesh comes in a set of two books, one for Rosh Hashanah and one for Yom Kippur. A total of 600 books each were donated. Please thank the Winer’s for their very special gift. Also, as a side note, if you would like to bring and donate your old machzorim to donate to other congregations, we will take them and share them. Thank you again Rick, Wendy and family!

As we each individually work on cultivating our inner selves for the coming new year, the lay leadership of Temple Beth Tikvah is looking at who we are and will be in 5780/2019 C.E. at Temple Beth Tikvah. At our board retreat this month, we will design together our vision and mission for the future of Temple Beth Tikvah and our community. We will define modern day Temple Beth Tikvah. Judaism in many ways is not what it was ten or twenty years ago. How can we meet the needs of Jews in our area all while remembering who we are at our core and founding values? We want Jews who come into our space to find it sacred, welcoming and inclusive. We also want to be intrinsically who and what we are/were meant to be.

Going into the High Holidays, we recognize many of you may some trepidation or concern about security due to the increase in antisemitism in our troubled world. Please know that we at Temple Beth Tikvah take your security and safety very seriously.

Please be aware we have taken additional steps to increase security this year not only for the High Holidays but for all our activities and services. We ask that you be patient and respectful of our security personnel and lay leadership. There have been changes that you may see and some you may not. However, also know we hold value in maintaining audacious hospitality. We want to welcome all in our community. We hope our need to be safe and our need to be sacred do not cancel out one another.

YOUTH GROUP The new year in HOTTY has officially begun, and I could not be more excited! A couple weeks ago, the HOTTY Board spent a weekend in Helen, GA honing leadership skills, bonding, and scheduling the events for the year. We learned about how we can apply lessons from the Avengers to our year on board, and we became superheroes ourselves to harness confidence and strength for the term!

We used our creativity to schedule some incredible events for the year, including a Fall Festival, a night of Jimmy Fallon games, and an Oscars Night (with a twist). HOTTY’s first event, Screen on the Green (outdoor movie night), is on September 28 at the synagogue. Planning has already begun, as we cannot wait to kick off the year!

In addition to some great events for our youth group, NFTY-SAR, the NFTY region to which HOTTY belongs, has a slew of great upcoming experiences for HOTTYites. NFTY-SAR LLTI, the annual training convention, will take place at Camp Coleman from September 13 to September 15, and all HOTTYites are invited to register and learn about leadership through a Jewish lens. Furthermore, HOTTY will be hosting NFTY-SAR’s Fall Kallah this year from November 8 to November 10, for which planning is just beginning.

SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE: DORICE HORENSTEIN Dorice Horenstein is a master teacher turned author and speaker!

Dorice Horenstein was born and raised in Israel and moved to Portland after completing her service as an officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

She worked in Jewish education for more than 30 years, transferring her love to Jewish traditions and the Hebrew language.

Today, the world is her classroom.

Her book Moments of the Heart, the four relationships everyone should experience to live wholeheartedly is infused with Jewish knowledge, spirituality and the Hebrew language.

Her book is praised by Rabbi Telushkin as powerful and beautiful. He says “What I have read is passionate, very spiritual, and well-reasoned, three things that don’t always go together. Rabbi Stampfer of Congregation Neveh shalom says—“This is a thoughtful and insightful work of an IsraeliAmerican woman which speaks directly from the heart!”

FAMILY CAMP 2019

Calling all TBT Families!

We hope you'll join us for the 2019 TBT Family Retreat, to be held at URJ Camp Coleman the weekend of October 25-27, 2019. This year's retreat theme is B'reshit, “Beginnings� and we are excited to welcome Beth Hamon, (http://www.beth-hamon-music.com/) as our Artist-in Residence. In celebration of creation and the world around us, we look forward to a full weekend CREATING. On Friday night, we will compile a piece of artwork to be displayed outdoors at TBT for years to come. On Saturday, participants will CREATE musical instruments (out of found and recyclable materials) and use them to CELEBRATE Shabbat together. Finally, Sunday, we will CREATE planters (out of old shoes) to line the paths at Camp Coleman. In between, expect rest, relaxation, a chance to participate in all of your favorite camp activities, and some great TBT family time!

What if I want to come, but can't make the whole weekend? This year, for the first time, we are offering the option for families to join us on Saturday afternoon and evening (2-8 PM). Enjoy 2 sessions of camp activities, and join in on the instrument making and singing fun. Stay for dinner and head home after Havdalah.

Shalom Sisterhood!

Reflecting back on this year, I am thankful to all of you who have planned and attended the Sisterhood events we have offered. It’s your involvement that makes us a truly special organization. Active membership in Sisterhood affords opportunities to meet and connect with others to perform Mitzvot on behalf of TBT and to support our larger community. What’s more, with our programs we strive to provide enjoyment and foster friendship while strengthening our bonds to Judaism. And we usually get to eat and drink wine while doing it! A win win!!

I am hoping that this year will be even better than last year.

Please consider joining us for a program if you have never done so. Once you come out you will be happy you did, and you will quickly join the ranks of The Sisterhood Regulars!

It’s so hard to believe that another year has flown by and here we are again preparing for another round of High Holiday services and the warm occasions that surround them. However you celebrate, my wish is for you and your families to have an inspirational and meaningful Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

A Women’s Spirituality Group Led by Dr. Terry Segal Wednesday, Sept 4 7:00 PM Rosh Chodesh is the celebration of the new moon and the new month, according to the Jewish calendar. Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the idol. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.

Our themes will be based on each Hebrew month and will be explored through discussions, meditations, journaling, connection to nature, arts & crafts and creative ritual.

B’NAI MITZVAH Dylan Lucas Tolchinsky will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on September 7, 2019.

Dylan is the son of Benjy and Amy Tolchinsky and brother to Sara.

He is the grandson of Mickey and Maureen Berk, Allan Tolchinsky and the late Carol Tolchinsky.

Dylan is an honor student in 7th grade at Hightower Trail Middle School where he is in all AC classes. He is passionate about basketball, enjoys playing with his friends and spending time on the Xbox. Dylan has spent the last five summers at Camp Thunderbird.

For his Mitzvah projects, Dylan participated in several activities to engage Jewish life and tradition in meaningful ways. These activities included visiting The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum, preparing and passing out lunches for underserved children, visiting The Package Good to learn about and experience life for people with disabilities. In support of a Kids Boost project, Dylan participated in a charity basketball tournament to benefit Camp Sunshine.

Erin Cervasio will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah September 14, 2019.

Erin is the daughter of Paul and Cherie Cervasio. She is the granddaughter of Frank and Pat Cervasio, Carole Vinnik and the late Don Vinnik, Dick Grosswald and the late Judy Grosswald.

Erin is in the 8th grade at Piney Grove Middle School where she enjoys singing in chorus and is a manager for the football team. She loves to play lacrosse for the FOCO Storm. Erin has recently started helping out with The Fabulous Flames, a special needs cheerleading squad. In her spare time, Erin likes to watch sports and movies with her dad.

Erin is proud to be a part of the TBT family. Her religious education has been priceless as her teachers and Rabbis’ have been amazing mentors. She is a kind and perceptive person who lives by the values of Judaism by living life everyday in kindness and gratitude.

Samantha Nagel will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 14, 2019.

Samantha is the daughter of Brian and Ellen Nagel and big sister to Jessica. She is the granddaughter to Richard and Phyllis Bloch of Bluffton, SC and the late Joel and Anita Nagel of Edison, NJ. Samantha is an 8th grade honor roll student at Dickerson Middle School.

She has followed in her father’s footsteps and enjoys playing the trumpet in both the symphonic and jazz bands.

Anyone who knows Samantha, knows that her passion is volleyball. It is hard to get her off the court whether playing for her Walton middle school feeder team or her club travel team. She also had the opportunity to be part of Team Atlanta for the Maccabi games last month playing volleyball. When she is not on the court, she enjoys spending time with her friends and family’s dog and cat, Daisy and Jewel.

Samantha has a desire to help others and has been volunteering for many years through Girl Scouts and the National Charity League, a mother daughter volunteer organization. Some of her volunteer activities included raising money through a bake sale for the Atlanta Humane Society, teaching tennis to children participating in Special Pops Tennis, and packing and making lunches for children in need.

By following these simple guidelines and principles, we can be assured that all members of our community are able to fully participate in the beautiful and sacred experience of sharing our meals and blessings.

1. Food items may be vegetarian, dairy, or fish (including tuna fish and egg dishes) but may not contain meat or seafood (shellfish, un-kosher fish, etc.) ingredients of any kind or in any amount.

2. Prepare sufficient amounts of entrée, salads, or side dishes to feed ten adults.

3. Food items must be served in disposal containers so nothing is left at TBT. 4. Please take your leftovers, utensils, and containers home with you.

UPCOMING EVENTS Forest Bathing Sunday, September 22 10:00 AM You’re invited to attend a Forest Bathing experience, the perfect place to do the spiritual work of soul clearing, whether during chesbon nesfesh, the accounting of the soul prior to the High Holy Days, or at any time.

What is forest bathing? It’s not rolling around on the forest floor, but rather, an immersion in the sensory experiences of the forest. It’s a powerful venue for healing and self-reflection.

The term, forest bathing, comes from the Japanese phrase, shinrin-yoku, coined in 1982, by Tomohide Akiyama. The healing benefits of unplugging from technology and the stress of everyday life by returning to the woods, are well documented.

There’s reverence in the sanctuary of the forest. For our first excursion, I’ll facilitate a gentle experience, right around the corner from TBT at Roswell Park. (Details coming soon.) hiking is involved. Walking on a paved trail will take us to points in which we will commune with nature and I’ll offer a meditation focus at each sensory stop, followed by silent connection and brief sharing, before we move to the next one. Each forest bathing experience gives one exactly what is needed.

Combining forest bathing and Judaism, offers a unique twist on this, as we plan to offer these at the change of each season. A short teaching on the tasks of the upcoming three months on the Hebrew calendar give it a framework to take forward with you, as you deepen your connection to nature, yourself, Judaism, and Hashem.

In the Fertility Buddies peer support program, we practice “relationship based support.” The emphasis is on building a secure and trusting relationship. Being “held” emotionally is something that makes us feel loved and valued. Fertility Buddies are there, regularly and consistently and give the freedom and space to process your own experience. They are not there to direct the experience or give advice. This allows you to feel safe enough to take what you need from the relationship. Confidentiality is an important part of this relationship.
