High Holy Days blessings with those in need (tzedakah). As such, we invite you to consider giving Tzedakah during the Ten Days- let us remember, Tzedakah is not just about charitable contributions, but about bringing justice and righteousness to the world.

Hasidic sources speak of an “inward point” that lies hidden, waiting to be discovered. That point is the presence of God implanted within this world, especially within each person. Our task is to discover that point and to expand it, making it the very center of the way we see both others and ourselves. As we do so, our vision of the world is transformed and we may catch a glimpse of the entire natural order radiant with a supernatural presence that glows from within. These

YOM KIPPUR Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, also known as the Sabbath of Sabbaths, is one of the most powerful individual and communal days in the Jewish calendar that begins before sunset with Kol Nidrei on Friday, September 29th and continues through the day on Saturday September 30th. We invite and encourage everyone to participate in the entire day’s offerings of services, workshops and programs.

The High Holy Days is our people’s annual convocation inviting us all to leverage the spiritual power of community to renew ourselves and change the course of our lives. These days of Awe-someness offer us the opportunity to stop and breathe, to cut through all the noise that regularly accosts our senses, to think and to reconnect to our highest aspirations for ourselves and our world. Our tradition asserts that the close examination and recalibration of our hearts (tikkun atzmi) is needed before true healing of the world (tikkun olam) becomes possible. These holy days, from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, offers us 10-days of reflection, prayer, teshuvah and collective transformational opportunity. We invite you to enter into this time with courage to truly change what needs to be changed, and the faith to welcome the new spirit that is within each one of us.

Yom Kippur crescendos with the poignant Neilah (closing) service, the final offering of prayers and affirmations of our whole community. The energy is powerful and profound and a perfect way to conclude the Days of Awe together. Bring family and friends, a shofar and a Havdallah candle for the final shofar blasts at the conclusion of Neilah and for the Havdallah service that ends the day.

Special Clothing and Customs for Yom Kippur Many people choose to wear white clothing on Yom Kippur as a sign of longing for purity of soul and teshuvah (repentance). Some wear a kittel, a white robe worn at moments of transition and is what Jews are traditionally clothed in when we die. If you own a kittel please bring it with you; if not, consider wearing white for Yom Kippur. Along with fasting from food and drink, and refraining from intimate relations, there is also a custom not to wear leather and leather products on Yom Kippur since leather comes from a living being whose life was taken and made into leather products, historically considered a luxury.

Look to THIS day, For it is Life.

ROSH HASHANAH We welcome the Jewish New Year, 5778, with song, prayer and personal spiritual examination on September 20th beginning with Erev Rosh Hashanah tefillot. Holy Day services will continue: Rosh Hashanah Day 1: Thursday, September 21st – followed by Tashlich at the river after services at 4:00 pm.

Rosh Hashanah Day 2: Friday, September 22nd – 10:00am – 12:30pm. This second day service is conducted with a more intimate vibe. Susan Cosden, RJE will offer the teaching during the Torah service.

Wall of Memory You are invited to bring photos of the people in your life who have died and place them on the wall of remembrance that will be set up in the sanctuary.

Through these photographs we open our hearts to those we have lost and bring their presence with us as we enter this holiest of days.

Gifts of Tzedakah on Rosh Hashanah Our rabbinic sages taught that by engaging in three specific acts during these days of awesomness, we can positively impact both our inner and outer worlds: returning to one's purest self (teshuvah), knowing before whom we stand (tefillah) and by sharing one’s 2

Notes from Cantor Kassel WHY I AM A CANTOR REFLECTION IN PREPARATION FOR 5778

Ever since I can remember I’ve been singing and making music in one way or another. From the Jr. Choir at “The Temple” to musical theater in High School, to oldies (pick a decade – through the 1980’s), opera and art songs in Italian, French and German and the best of choral music with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus under the direction of Robert Shaw. I sang in “Fiddler On the Roof” at the AA Synagogue where I had my first exposure to a cantor…..Cantor Isaac Goodfriend, of blessed memory. I played “Dust In The Wind” for Confirmation and even “Kol Nidrei” on violin – the year the cellist had to cancel at the last minute for Yom Kippur at The Temple. Along the way I learned enough guitar chords to play basic contemporary Jewish music and then – a highly concentrated study of Jewish music (history and sacred texts) at Hebrew Union College, including traditional cantorial music, Yiddish, Ladino and so much more.

But this is less about my professional biography and more about the fulfillment of bringing sacred texts to life through music in ways that elevate and inspire. This is why I am a cantor. If the music at Temple Beth Tikvah provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your life, enhance your joys, soothe your soul in times of illness, loss and challenge, and feel a part of community that ideally wants to make the world a better place - then I can ask for nothing more. It is for these things – that I want to expend my spiritual, physical and emotional energy.

Admittedly, from time to time I experience distractions from my loftier ideals, but I find in Judaism, a foundation of values and rituals that can bring me back to my focus and intent. When I chant the “Hin’ni” prayer at the beginning of Erev Rosh Hashanah, I humbly pray that I, in the most open and sincere way, help God hear and accept with favor - our prayers and petitions in our efforts to return…..return to God and our having been created in b'tzelem Elohim, in the image of the Divine.

May 5778 be a year of goodness, health, blessing and fulfillment for you and those you love.

May our kind words and caring actions help to bring harmony into the world.

May Temple Beth Tikvah continue to be a place that inspires us to heal what is broken and to appreciate and nurture all that is good.

Each individual attending Rosh Hashanah evening services will receive a grocery bag and is asked to return the bag on Yom Kippur morning filled with non-perishable food for the needy. HOTTY members will assist by accepting these food donations at the entrance to the synagogue building.

High Holy Days We call them the High Holy Days, but Yamim Noraim is best translated as “Days of Awe.” These are days in which we step out of our daily routines and wake up to the mysterious gift of life itself. The message of the High Holy Days is that everything is possible. Things don’t have to be as they are. We don’t have to be the people we have become. We can repair, redirect, and reframe the contours of our relationships and our lives. In these days, we are invited to reflect deeply, dream boldly, and discover a renewed sense of wonder and purpose in our lives.

Temple Beth Tikvah will partner with Temple Kehillat Chaim for two Roswell area High Holy Day experiences:

Saturday, September 16: Selichot 8 pm at Temple Kehillat Chaim

Selichot are prayers and meditations recited to help us prepare for the Holy Days, by encouraging us to begin to reflect on the past year and the changes we wish to make in the upcoming one. Some liken selichot prayers to spiritual calisthenics, warming us up to enter into Rosh Hashana and those ten days of awesomeness that follow.

The evening itself offers, a bit of study, havdallah and a beautiful, candle-lit service, with inspiring seasonal music and the ritual of changing the Torah covers from colored to white, symbolizing our desire that through repentance, our sins will be made white as snow (Isaiah 1:18).

Thursday, September 21: Tashlich Rabbis Shuval-Weiner and Winokur, along with Cantor Kassel, will lead this beautiful service out on the waterfront. A pop-up apples and honey reception will directly follow our gathering, symbolizing our hopes for a ‘sweet’ new year. Gathering spot: Azalea Park on the Chattahoochee River at 4:00 pm.

Lessons from Ireland Ivie and I had the good fortune recently to vacation in Ireland.

It’s a lovely country that I would recommend for anyone’s bucket list (travel edition). Among the many things we did and saw, two items made a particular impact.

The second event was our visit to the Irish Jewish Museum in Dublin. The museum is housed in a small former synagogue and is staffed by mostly non-Jewish volunteers. It is located on a residential block that was once in the heart of a robust Jewish community with multiple synagogues.

Today, the entire Dublin area has about 1,200 Jews (about the same as TBT when counting all family members) comprising about half of the total Jewish population in all of Ireland.

First, I was struck by the fact that all official signs such as historical markers and highway signs are in both English and Irish Gaelic. I subsequently learned that Irish-language education became compulsory in the public school system about a century ago following independence from Britain and in response to the downward trend in fluency and usage. Here were some deliberate actions taken with an eye to preserving a culture that was distinct from the mainstream society. There was a recognition that if people did not actively ‘practice’ that culture (or in this case speak it), it would continue to shrink to the point of irrelevancy.

While the museum itself was very interesting, it was sad to walk through a former sanctuary with memorial plaques of loved ones still on the wall, an open Torah on display as a mere artifact, and other indicators of a once-thriving but now greatly diminished Jewish community. It was a reminder that in an environment of ongoing change, what we take for granted today is not guaranteed to be there in the future. Yes, we are blessed to live in a metro area experiencing positive population growth with a corresponding number of new Jewish arrivals. At the same time, the next generation is feeling less inclined to join established institutions (including synagogues) unless they directly connect to their desires for meaning and purpose, making an impact, and forming deep relationships. We on the Board have discussed this challenge on numerous occasions and we are committed to turning those direct connections into a reality.

I thought this was a great analogy for Judaism. While we don’t have government policies and compulsory education to rely upon, we do have the ability to make personal choices regarding how to incorporate the practice of Judaism into our daily lives. Whether it’s adding incremental pieces to our Shabbat observance, learning more about our sacred obligations and applying them, sending our kids to Jewish summer camp, or any of a host of other actions, we can each make Judaism come alive as a religion of practice. In so doing we are at least maintaining, and ideally strengthening, Jewish identity and Jewish life for transmission to the next generation.

“The Shofar bids us wake up and remember: Yom Hazikaron, the Day of Memory, was the original name for the day and in our Machzor it retains this name alongside Rosh Hashanah.

Yom Hazikaron: the Day of Memory – in Israel there’s another Yom Hazikaron in the calendar - the day for all the fallen in battle.

But today is not for memorializing the dead.

It’s for the living, personal memory.”

3. Decorate a mirror as a family that will be used for reflecting upon the past year and making decisions about how to act.

4. Decide as a family where you will give tzedakah to celebrate the birthday of the world (Rosh HaShanah). In fact, I have attended Rosh HaShanah dinners or parties where a birthday cake has been served for the world’s birthday.

5. Create Rosh HaShanah cards together on paper or on the computer and send them to family and friends.

Shanah tovah to all. As we prepare to welcome Rosh HaShanah, this year I am drawn to another name for this holiday, Yom HaZikaron, the Day of Memory. Yom HaZikaron is the original name given to this holiday in the Torah. As Rabbi Silverman states early in his poem, M for Memory and Motivation, this holiday is about our living, personal memory. How do we look back on this past year? What did I do this past year to make the world better? How did I respond to world events? How did I respond to local events? How did I respond to the stranger, my friends, my family? How can these memories motivate me in this year to come?

6. Make challah together and/or the Rosh HaShanah dinner together.

(Please feel free to contact me if you would like recipes or special instructions for ways to braid the challah for the holiday.)

7. Consider giving each of your children a new book to celebrate the new year.

8. Try a new recipe or a tradition from a different Jewish culture than your own each year. Here are a few cookbooks that might help: Classic Italian Jewish Cooking by Edda Servi Machlin, The Foods of Israel Today by Joan Nathan, Jewish Home Cooking by Arthur Schwartz (Ashkenazi Cuisine), The Book of Jewish Food by Claudia Roden (Sephardic Cuisine), and Olive Trees and Honey by Gil Marks (vegetarian recipes from Jewish communities around the world).

I would also suggest it is a time to reflect on memories of Rosh HaShanah past. What are our memories of how we celebrated this holiday with our families when we were children? How did we celebrate the holiday at home? Did we also celebrate the holiday at a synagogue? How did these memories help to shape the Jew you are today?

9. As a family participate in Tashlich services together. Don’t forget to bring your bread or bread crumbs. Tashlich is a short service on Rosh HaShanah afternoon when we toss bread crumbs into water to symbolically wash away are mistakes of the past year.

Are there special family recipes that have been past down through the generations for celebrating Rosh HaShanah? For those of you who are parents, have you thought about what memories your children will have at this time of the year? Will the memories that you create motivate your children to find meaning and purpose in their lives through Judaism? Here is a list of some ideas to build more family memories of Rosh HaShanah.

May this year, 5778, be a year of creating Jewish memories and may we be motivated to make the world sweeter and full of goodness.

1. One Jewish value is to beautify the mitzvot. As a family make an apple honey dish and decorate it together or perhaps just core an apple and rub lemon juice on the inside and fill the apple with honey.

Perhaps you would rather make a round challah cover or go to a paint it yourself ceramics shop to make Kiddush cups for each family member.

Children ages 3 through 3rd grade are invited and encouraged to join us for a hands-on, High Holy Day Experience of the senses.

On Rosh Hashanah, we will take part in a Rosh Hashanah Seder. They will have the opportunity to taste a variety of foods for the New Year going way beyond apples and honey.

We will be running the Amazing Race for Yom Kippur. Children will be working together to accomplish specific tasks related to the traditional themes of the holiday.

Please note, both days will be hands-on and children may get messy. Please dress them accordingly or provide a smock.

The cost is $36 per family ($54 after 9/13) per holiday for members and $54 per family ($72 after 9/13) per holiday for non-members.

B’nai Mitzvah Margot Shields will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 2, 2017. She is the daughter of William and Susan Shields and sister of Brody. As a 7th grader at Saint Francis Middle School, she has competed on the swimming team and enjoys Advanced Art. Margot's passion is acting and she most recently appeared as Cinderella in the Roswell Youth Theater's production of Twinderella. She enjoys volunteering for many organizations like the Zaban Couples Shelter, Chattahoochee Nature Center and Furkids. The focus of her mitzvah projects was raising money to help patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Jakob Torino will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on September 9, 2017. Jakob is the son of Ann Dee and Michael Torino and the brother to Rebecca. He is the grandson of Geri and Harry Zwerling of Roswell, GA and Mary Claire and Mike Torino of Madison, GA. Jakob is currently an 8 th grader at Crabapple Middle School where he participates in track and volleyball. Jakob enjoys working as a madrichim at religious school, attending Camp Blue Star and playing football for the Roswell Jr. Hornets. He is also very active in Boy Scouts and enjoys volunteering in the community. Jakob is looking forward to sharing this special day with family and friends.

Benjamin Bernstein will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on September 16, 2017. Benjamin is the son of Michael and Jeannine and brother to Nate and Lila. He is in the 8 th grade at Crabapple Middle School where he participates in the WEB Leader program and volleyball team. His hobbies include lacrosse, mountain biking, and skateboarding. As one of his bar mitzvah projects, Benjamin collected supplies and donations for the Atlanta Humane Society.

Welcome to Sisterhood!! We hope you have had a good summer and are ready to explore the many offerings Sisterhood will have this year. Our opening event is really exciting as we engage in the fashion world. Please join us Sunday, September 17, at 9:45 a.m. for our first fashion show by Fox’s of Atlanta. Our models will be sensational in beautifully customized outfits and it will be a great opportunity to schmooze with fellow Sisterhood members. We hope to see you there and also learn about how YOU can become involved in Sisterhood!!

Knit and Nosh continues this year to knit or crotchet warm scarves for homeless folks in the Atlanta area. We will also be making Mommy Love Squares for newborns receiving special care in the hospital to encourage bonding with their special moms. Instruction is available and newcomers are always welcome. Our next Knit and Nosh evening will be Tuesday, September 19th at 7:30 p.m. Please contact Terry Carasick at terryshealthyliving@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Tikkun Olam Congregational Day of Mitzvot & Learning Sunday, September 10th at 9:30 am TBT will host a congregation-wide day of learning focused on Tikkun Olam (repair of the world). More than 20 area service organizations will be with us to share their mission, engage with congregants and provide opportunities for hands-on Mitzvot that extend beyond that day. Organizations attending focus on issues including: hunger, homelessness, Israel, the underprivileged, refugees, animal rescue (with special

visitors), the environment and more.

Religious School students will be attending as part of the instructional day, and need to

be accompanied by an adult (parent or grandparent) to approve sign-ups for volunteering/donations. All TBT members are ENCOURAGED to attend. Let's all do our part to bring more Tzedek into our community!
