see the Broadway show Hamilton, but when I do I will be fully prepared for that experience! To ready myself, I read Ron Chernow’s book Alexander Hamilton.

Then I learned Lin Manuel Miranda’s lyrics by listening to the stage show’s soundtrack, over and over until those words were my own. Finally, I watched as many YouTube clips of the show that I can find. Now, I can say that I feel fully prepared and I know that I am READY for an incredible experience when that day comes!

Five: Plan to attend Selichot. The Saturday evening before Rosh Hashanah we come together to hear the shofar and reflect on the year that is ending. A short beautiful service offers a taste of the melodies and prayers to come, helping us “get our head in the game”.

This year we have a special musical band, Nefesh Mountain, with us, helping our Holy Day preparations.

In Judaism, our BIG EVENT is on the way, the Yamim Noraim, the HIGH holy days - our days of Awesomeness! People flock to synagogues around the world, prepared for an experience. Waiting to be moved, even transformed. However, without ever doing the work to prepare their hearts, minds and souls for the experience, many leave wondering what they missed.

Six: Dress for Success. Our focus is on erasing the things that sully us, and redirecting our lives for good. While doing the inner work, dressing for the experience reminds us of holiness. Wearing white clothes is traditional on the Holy Days. A tallit, if you have one, is appropriate for Rosh Hashanah day and for Yom Kippur - both evening and day. Some people refrain from wearing leather on Yom Kippur and opt for white canvas sneakers instead.

“I would enter the sanctuary on the first night of Rosh Hashanah and unconsciously I would be thinking: rabbi, cantor, do your work. Make me a better person. Make me feel something. [Only years later] did I realize that this was my responsibility. I couldn’t expect to walk into a final exam not having done the work and then expect to ace the test.” (Los Angeles Jewish Journal 2009)

These are just a few of the ways that I prepare for the Days of Awe. Find your way. Share with us on Facebook some of your favored practices or something new that you plan to try during the month of Elul. Together we can create an outstanding inner and outer spiritual space for a meaningful Holy Day season.

The next logical question is: So how do I prepare to enter these holy days in a way that will bring deeper meaning to my religious experience? Below are a few of the ways that I choose to get myself ready…perhaps you will find something meaningful for your own practice.

Two: Do Good. It is said that it takes the entire month of Elul to properly prepare one’s heart. Try making these 30 days leading up to the HHDs-Days of Chesed/of kindness. Consider giving out flowers to senior citizens, buy a latte for a stranger, pick up a bag of non-perishable food items to bring in for Operation Isaiah…or come up with other ways you can commit to making the world a better more gentle place.

Experience the holiness of Jerusalem’s Old City. Float in the Dead Sea. Discover Jewish mysticism in Safed.

Celebrate Shabbat in Jerusalem. Meet with families in our sister community of Yokneam-Meggido. Explore the sites you have only read about in the Torah. Connect with other Temple Beth Tikvah members.

You can experience all this and more on an incredible 11 day congregational trip to Israel with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner.

Three: Teshuvah. This is the most important piece of preparation. If there is an apology, an explanation, an "I love you," a re-do or a re-start that needs to happen, don't wait. Do it now.

B’nai Mitzvah Zoe Gotlin will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 3, 2016. Zoe is the daughter of Greg and Melissa Gotlin and sister to Karley. Zoe is the granddaughter of Ron and Sue Gotlin, and Bernie and Gayle Kranz.

Zoe is in 8th grade at Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek. Since she was 5 she has been playing violin and has been in many orchestras, including Emory Junior Chamber orchestra. As part of Zoe's mitzvah project, she has been entertaining seniors by playing her violin at assisted and independent living communities. She has also begun a drive to collect instruments for the Atlanta Music Project (AMP) and will be donating her own money she earned playing the violin to the organization. Zoe also enjoys taking photos, swimming, shopping, traveling and spending time with friends and family.

Samantha Kiel will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on September 17, 2016. Samantha is the daughter of Lisa and Clifford Kiel and the sister of Matthew Kiel. She is the granddaughter of Carol Borger and Robert Levin along with Dolores Kiel and the late Marvin Kiel. Samantha attends Dodgen Middle School where she is a Principal Honor roll student and member of the chorus. Sammi is a competitive swimmer and state medalist. She also loves to run and hang out with her friends. She combined her passion for swimming and her desire to help end cancer in her 13 Mitzvot project. Sammi looks forward to sharing her Bat Mitzvah with family, friends, and the synagogue community.

Joshua Ryan Sacks will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on September 17, 2016. Josh is the son of Suzanne Sacks and Todd Sacks and the brother to Ilana. He is the grandson of Arlene Lieberfarb, Richard Lieberfarb, Ellen and Stephen Sacks and Linda Sacks, all from New York. Josh is an 8th grade Honor Roll student at Saint Francis Middle School. He is a member of the Junior Beta Club and plays baseball for the Saint Francis Knights and Eastside. He also enjoys playing basketball and hanging out with his friends. He just completed his 6th amazing summer at Camp Barney Medintz. Josh is excited about becoming a Bar Mitzvah and is looking forward to sharing this special day with his family and friends.

I

ECEC n 1986, Whitney Houston belted out the words,” I believe the children are our future, teach them well, and let them lead the way.” The Greatest Love of All is a beautiful song that truthfully I never thought I would be quoting in a Kol Tikvah article. But, lately, these words are weighing heavy on me.

Many of you may remember the Pew Study that was released a few years ago. The study showed that amongst Jewish millennials, 32% claimed to have no religion. Of these “Jews with no religion” who have children at home, two-thirds are not raising their children Jewish in any way. I find this statistic very frightening, and its impact is even scarier. As the director of Early Childhood Education here at Temple Beth Tikvah, I have seen and experienced the impact. All over the country, Jewish preschool enrollments are down, losing Jewish children to less expensive churches and secular school options.

You may think, “Well, the child is young, it won’t matter, where he goes to school.” But it does matter. It is within our walls that we nurture and build Jewish identities. We partner with committed families to make confident Jewish children who can handle being the only Jewish child in an elementary school classroom, or who can stand up for herself when an anti-Semitic comment is made. It is here, that we can guarantee the continuity of the Jewish people.

Your children are the future of our religion. Teach them well and let them lead the way.

Religious School We’ve had a great start to our school year. Happy faces and cheerful voices were heard throughout the building. It was so great to hear the students singing in Tefilah on the first day of school.

I am so proud of our wonderful teachers for creating engaging lessons and of our outstanding students who come eager to learn.

Our New Tzedek Committee: Social Action vs. Social Justice * One of the distinguishing characteristics of Reform Judaism is its emphasis on Tikkun Olam, that is, healing or repairing the world. We look with pride at the iconic 1965 civil rights photo of Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath carrying a Torah on the march from Montgomery to Selma while standing in between Dr. Martin Luther King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. In fact, on virtually every piece of TBT correspondence, we highlight Tikkun/Healing as one of our four gateways into Judaism (along with Study, Prayer, and Community). What do we understand Tikkun to look like? For the most part TBT has used a plethora of Social Action projects to encourage our members to look beyond our personal needs and desires, and to make a difference in the lives of others. Many of you have eagerly participated in such projects as Family Promise, Stop Hunger Now, Project Isaiah, Blessings in a Backpack, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and many more. TBT is proud to offer such opportunities as they allow us to fulfill, at least in part, our sacred obligations regarding tzedek or justice. But I think it is only half of the equation.

Michelle Putnam Shacham is leading the Social Justice half of the portfolio, focused on engaging our members in conversations about issues of injustice and the underlying systemic problems, and encouraging us to “get into the game” by advocating for change. The Aug. 26 Social Justice Shabbat with a guest speaker from Jubilee USA was one example of the conversations Michelle will be coordinating. I suspect that some of you may be thinking, “Ah, I see where this is going… You ultimately want me to advocate for more government programs which means more spending and more taxes. That’s against my political philosophy!” That’s not what I’m saying. All governments make decisions about the relative importance of policies and programs to address social issues, their associated funding (if any), and the rules by which the policies/programs operate. Are you in agreement with their decisions? For example: Do you agree with how the issue is being defined? Are the policies and programs correctly addressing the root causes of the issue? Is enough being done?

Can the dollars be spent in a better way? If changes are warranted, what can realistically be achieved in the near term and who should you talk to? These are relevant questions regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum.

Most of these projects are aimed at providing direct help to people in need, such as a new house for one family, a safe place to eat and sleep for 3-4 homeless families, or food donations that may perhaps feed a few hundred families. These are acts of kindness, or gemilut chasadim, and represent a necessary but only temporary fix to the problems of our broken world. As Jews we must continue to engage in these acts of kindness and be involved in helping others. This is the Social Action half of the equation – helping. But if we truly want to participate in healing the world, we also need to invest some of our time and energy in addressing the underlying root causes of the issues, be it poverty, homelessness, hunger, human trafficking, or whatever. This means that we need to take the time to (1) become educated about the prevalence, characteristics, and trends regarding the issue, (2) learn what’s working and not working via the efforts of government and non-profits, and (3) advocating for change with the appropriate entities. This is the Social Justice half of the equation – healing. This is not an easy process. We all understand that solving these types of issues (i.e., real healing) is a complex, long-term endeavor, and is fraught with a litany of failed experiments and contentious political arguments. But that doesn’t mean we should stop trying. We are obligated to bring more justice into the world through healing, even more so as Reform Jews.

The word “healing” connotes eradicating an illness such that one is returned to perfect health. As it pertains to social justice, our work of Tikkun is similarly concerned with eliminating the issues which plague our society and world, knowing that this work will never be finished in our lifetime. I look forward to having our Tzedek Committee get us more deeply “into the game” with conversations around these issues.

We now have two co-chairs leading our efforts. The dinners will continue to be Pot Luck type dinners for which you should plan to bring a main meal for yourself and something yummy to share with the group (an appetizer or dessert). Everything should be vegetarian, dairy or pareve (no meat!) and must not be brought into the kitchen in order to keep the kitchen kosher. In addition, please bring a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank as an act of tzedakah. The dates and movies (with a brief description ) will be on the website, so please check them out! RSVP s are important for table and movie seating as well as planning for drinks, popcorn and M&Ms. Chairs will always be available for last minute arrivals.

Hello Sisterhood! Excitement abounds as we inform you about our opening event on Sunday, September 11, at 9:45 a.m. Please join us in the Social Hall as we sip lattes from Mocha My Day and munch on treats while catching up with each other and getting to know new members. Brainstorming is the key to creative and novel ideas and we will be canvassing your ideas that morning to plan a most productive year! Our planning committee looks forward to seeing you there.

Mah Jongg is Sunday September 18th at 9:45 a.m. in the Social Hall. Novice, “medium” level and seasoned players are all welcome. We will have teachers handy so come and join the fun.

Babka making is Wednesday, September 21 at 7 p.m. Please meet in the kitchen as we partner with adult education to make this yummy treat. Aprons welcome!

Knit and Nosh is Sunday, September 25, at 9:45 a.m. in the oneg room. Bring your knitting needles or crotchet hooks and yarn as we create beautiful winter scarves to give to homeless folks in area Atlanta shelters. Beginners welcome and teachers available to help you start a scarf.

A big thank you shout out to Helen Kraus for arranging our book review, August 1st and to Rabbi Shuval-Weiner for leading a great discussion on the book, Levittown, by David Kushner. The evening was informative and generated much thought. We’ll keep you posted about more book reviews this year.

Usher in the New Year as a TBT Greeter!

If you have a welcoming personality, a warm smile and a desire to make an important contribution to TBT’s High Holy Day services, then serving as a TBT greeter just might be the job for you. Greeting is a wonderful way to say hello to old and new friends alike, all while performing a mitzvah you can feel good about.

Whether you are a veteran greeter or want to experience the satisfaction of serving for the first time, please help us to fill several greeting slots for these services: Erev Rosh

Hashana – October 2 Rosh Hashana – October 3 Rosh Hashana – October 4 Kol Nidre – October 11 Yom Kippur – October 12 Signing up to be a greeter is easy!

Help a child read better – TUTORS needed for this school year Consider volunteering for the National Council of Jewish Women's Atlanta Jewish Coalition for Literacy. The Coalition's goal is to give children, who face challenges with their reading, an opportunity to become more reading proficient with the help of a volunteer tutor. Volunteer as little as 30 minutes per week at a local school.

HUNGER ACTION SHABBAT Friday, September 9th at 8 pm Lindy Dunn, from the Atlanta Community Food Bank, will be our guest speaker.

ATTENTION Parents of TBT College Students Do you have a child who will be attending college in the fall or is currently attending college? If so, please let us know who they are (even if we may already have their name on our list). We’d like to keep them connected to the TBT community by sending them a care package twice per year to coincide with the Rosh Hashanah and Purim holidays. We want them to know that they’re being thought of while away from home at school!

If your student’s name is already on our list we’ll be soliciting current school contact information very soon. Don’t let your student feel left out. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
