A Reform Congregation Embracing Our Jewish Tradition

Reboot in Cheshvan In today’s world we are hyper-connected to EVERYTHING! We don’t miss a news topic, a tweet, a political ad, cute animal video, a meme or work email. Many of us walk around ALL DAY with our phones on our body. “We start our days by instinctually checking the weather when we first wake up. Some of us will lie in bed scrolling through our social media feeds to take tabs on who is doing what, what birthdays need a shout out, or to find an inspirational quote help us launch the day. Next, we throw on clothes, feed those that we are responsible for and most likely continue to scroll on your phone as you mindlessly scarf down a bowl of cereal. Getting into the car, the phone connects to navigation & music dashboard, giving endless tunes & podcasts to entertain us while sitting in heavy traffic.

In your office you will spend the next 8 hours staring at a computer screen, convening virtual meetings, working through your work specific tech programs and corresponding to colleagues through email and instant messenger. Scrolling again through lunch, which you most likely eat while sitting at your desk. At the end of the day, we may run errands using a convenient app or head to the gym with head phones to block out the world while you power through reps. Home again. Dinner, perhaps a conversation with those you love, a tv show that you never miss and 3 other DVR shows that you missed. Then back in bed, where you may scroll again until you fall asleep”.*

Most of us are plugged in ALL-DAY LONG. With our heads looking downward at a screen instead of upward and outward, we increasingly miss out on the important moments of living life.

When our view of the world is only through a phone camera lens or within a virtual world we are unable to see what might be happening around us right in this very instant, the Hineini moments, the Nissim Bechol Yom the incredible daily miracles, or even the ability to live with radical amazement because the hours have all just slipped away thanks to a blue glow and the swipe of a finger?

This certainly must take its toll on the quality of our relationships. Remember the days of long, deep conversations; eyes meeting the eyes of another, and listening with full presence? While it is true that technology has made so many things in our life easier, we must consider whether it has replaced genuine connection to humans in real time, to the world around us, even to nurturing our spiritual lives.

In a few days we will enter the Hebrew month of Cheshvan, an interesting month in that other than Shabbat, there are no Jewish holidays. The good news is that it gives us a bit of bonus time to explore new, or neglected, aspects of our lives.

So with all this free time, I’d like for us to consider a holiday of sorts for ourselves and our relationships, human and worldly, by observing a Device-Free Day! You choose the date for yourself, it could be the traditional time of Shabbat -sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, or it could be any other 24-hour period of your choosing. But whenever it falls you agree to power down, put your electronics away and get up and out into the world. Take a hike, prepare a meal with friends, go to the beach. Whatever it is, make yourself fully present to people and place.

Let’s use Cheshvan to Unplug in order to reboot and reconnect to the things that are most important to usour relationships, our mental health, our spiritual life.

NOTES FROM CANTOR KASSEL From Action-Packed “Tishrei” to “Mar Cheshvan” We’ve just finished our month-long observances of major holidays and services, from Selichot through Simchat Torah!

Now what?

I’ll tell you what……EVERYTHING! The Hebrew month of Cheshvan is often referred to as “MAR” Cheshvan, mar: meaning ‘bitter’.

Bitter – because there are no holidays in this month. But for us at TBT, Cheshvan is not bitter, it is full of life and activity.

Jr. Choir begins Sunday, October 7 Adult Choir rehearsal – Tuesday Oct. 9 Post holiday B’nai Mitzvah.

Shabbat services, Adult Education and so much more!

Did you enjoy hearing our Adult Choir during the High Holy Days?

Consider joining in on the entertaining chemistry and music-making of our Adult Choir. We rehearse several Tuesday nights each month (school year) and sing the 2 nd Friday of each month.

Did you enjoy coming up for group aliyot during the High Holy Days? Consider taking it a step further. For Hebrew readers, I have time carved out in my Sunday morning Religious School schedule to teach you (remind you) the basics of chanting Torah. We’ll eventually find a date when YOU can chant a few verses of Torah. It CAN be done. I promise to make it fun and unintimidating!

Did you feel more of that sense of community during the recent holidays? Let’s keep the momentum going. If you’ve felt a bit on the periphery of synagogue life, we are here for you, doors wide open. All you need to do is walk through that door to discover that we have endless opportunities for you to become an integral part of all that we do in our wonderful synagogue.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I hope you all had meaningful High Holidays. A very special thank you to all of you in our wonderful community!

Heading into 5779 with a fresh slate, I’ve accepted this Mental Cleanse Challenge that focuses on self-care, digital cleansing and positivity that I wanted to share with all of you. I found this challenge on a blog that I discovered. In addition to the items on the list, I personally want to add in “Doing Something Jewishly Each Day” as a way to remind myself of G-d’s covenant with me and my covenant with G-d. This for me means doing something personally spiritually inspiring or fulfilling each day, not just “going through the motions”.

Mental Cleanse Challenge Self Care: Day 1: Set two goals you would like to achieve during this challenge.

Day 2: Treat your face to a special pampering facial.

Day 3: Go for a walk.

Day 4: Journal for 15 minutes.

Day 5: Go to bed 30 minutes earlier than normal.

Day 6: Make a Gratitude list of everything you are grateful for in your life.

Day 7: Take a long bubble bath.

Diet & Exercise: Day 8: Try a new workout you’ve never done before.

Day 9: Keep all three meals “phone free”. No social media scrolling!

Day 10: Do a yoga for beginners workout to give your muscles a little TLC. Day 11: Make two of your three meals meatless. Need inspiration? Check Pintrest.

Day 12: Meditate for 5 minutes and focus on your breath.

Day 13: Take your workout outdoors even if it’s for 20 minutes!

Day 14: Go vegan for a day!

Digital Cleanse: Day 15: Clean out your inbox and sort your emails into folders. Delete all spam.

Day 16: No social media before 11 am. Take the time to be productive.

Day 17: Unfollow people on social media who don’t inspire you.

Day 18: Organize your desktop accordingly into folders. Delete unnecessary items.

Day 19: Go through your phone and organize your apps into folders. Delete apps you don’t use, old notes, contacts.

Day 20: Have a phone-free night with family or loved ones.

Day 21: Unsubscribe from email marketing you are not interested in keeping up with.

Positivity: Day 22: No Complaint Day Day 23: Write down 3 great things that happened today.

Day 24: Spend 15 minutes in silence focusing on one positive attribute about yourself.

Day 25: Compliment a stranger.

Day 26: Write a letter to yourself explaining why you are unique.

Day 27: Ask your friends to describe you in 3 words. Write them down and repeat it to yourself throughout the day.

Day 28: Write out your challenge wins and treat yourself

If you are joining me on this journey please let me know. I wish you much success in finding your authentic self. I also wanted to remind you to nurture and love yourself with compassion today.

YOUTH GROUP I don’t remember where I heard it, but the most useful piece of advice I have ever been given is to “say yes.” It applies whether you are a youth group advisor, teacher, camp counselor, or parent. In all of the roles listed above, it is our tendency, when asked a question by a child or teen, to say “no.” “Can I wear this shirt to school?” “Can we have class outside today?” Or, in my house, “Can I put my peas in my glass of water and drink them?” We say “no” because it’s automatic, it’s usually easier for us. Or maybe because, the thought of drinking your peas is just gross and messy. Not often do we have a really good reason to say no. So, the advice goes like this…instead of saying no, the next time your child or student or youth grouper asks to do something try and say “yes.”

Stop and think about whether you have a really good reason to say no. I think you’ll find that most of the time, we actually don’t. I had a counselor call me a few years ago after hearing me talk about this. She said one of her campers asked if he could eat a stick of butter. Her immediate reaction was “No, of course not!” But she stopped herself and found that, besides her own personal feelings about eating a stick of butter, she had no reason to tell this camper no.

(In case you’re wondering, the camper took one bite and then decided not to continue.) Saying “yes” as often as we can, makes the times we do say “no” much more meaningful. We can back it up and explain why we’re making the decision. The butter story is a funny example, but it shows that the more we can say “yes,” the more freedom we can give our kids to do and try out things, let them make decisions, and make mistakes, and help them to learn and grow.

So, the next time your 4.5 year old asks if he can sleep in his bean bag chair (true story!) or your teenager asks if she can dye her hair purple, try saying yes!

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING—SUSAN COSDEN The first day of October we celebrate Simchat Torah and shortly thereafter we enter the Hebrew month of Cheshvan. Cheshvan is also known as Mar Cheshvan, the bitter month of Cheshvan because we do not celebrate any holidays or fasts this month. (Interestingly, the Ethiopian Jewish community celebrates Sigd on the 29th day of Cheshvan, as recognized by the Israeli Knesset July 2008.) While there are no holidays or fasts; besides Shabbat this month; we at TBT have so much to celebrate.

One of the things we celebrate is having a full month of school on Sundays. We also begin classes for our Tuesday Hebrew students on October 2 and the first day of classes for Kivunim and Confirmation on October 15. We even have our first family education day on October 7. This family education day is for our kindergarten families.

Our families with young children have two special events this month: Munchkin Shabbat on Friday, October 12 and Make Believe and Make It Real playdate on Sunday, October 21.

For our adults, Chai Mitzvah begins on Tuesday, October 9. Chai Mitzvah combines study, ritual and social action, providing the framework for a meaningful Jewish journey.

The event that will bring all ages together is our “Blessing of the Animals and Pet Adoptions” evening on October 6. Join us as we say goodbye to Shabbat and welcome in the week of Parashat (portion of the week) Noach. We hopefully won’t need an ark and if you have more than 2 dogs or 2 cats, that is okay. We look forward to meeting these important members of your families.

TEMPLE BETH TIKVAH CIVIL RIGHTS JOURNEY Temple Beth Tikvah is having an adult Civil Rights Journey, November 17-18. The cost of the trip is $525 per person, which includes the hotel, all meals beginning with Saturday dinner and ending with Sunday dinner, all ground transportation, admission, and programming costs. The single supplement is $65.

We must have AT LEAST 20 PEOPLE BY OCTOBER 3 to run the trip. The price goes down if we have 25 people.

ADULT EDUCATION AT TBT As chairman of the AEC, one of my most meaningful responsibilities is to work with the Temple professionals to provide a varied and rich selection of adult learning opportunities here at TBT. While our 2018-2019 schedule is quite robust, still we are interested in knowing what additional programs, classes and travel opportunities would be of interest to YOU our congregation. Some suggested topics thus far have been: Responsa Literature Jewish History Comparative Religions Jewish Culture We have so many wise individuals here in the congregation, if there is a topic that you would be willing to share/teach we are interested in speaking with you! It is my goal to convene a meeting of those interested in serving on our Adult Education Committee. B’NAI MITZVAH Emma Grace Garris will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 13, 2018. Emma is the daughter of Robert and Lisa Garris and sister to Ezra. She is in the 7th grade at Dickerson Middle School where she participates in the Orchestra. She loves playing soccer and spending her free time exploring the outdoors with her friends. She has learned a lot about Judaism while preparing for her Bat Mitzvah and participating in her mitzvah projects. We are very proud of Emma as she achieves this important milestone.

Max Eliott Weiskopf will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on October 13, 2018.

He is the son of Renée and Steven Weiskopf and brother to Noah. Max is in the 7 th grade at Crabapple Middle School. Max loves playing baseball for the Roswell Hornets travel team. He also enjoys playing hockey and tennis. Max spends his summers at Camp Barney Medintz.

For Max’s Mitzvah project, he held a drive to collect used baseball equipment. He was able to collect over 100 pieces of equipment. He partnered with The Atlanta Braves and Baseball Tomorrow Fund and they will donate the equipment to children in need.

Max is excited to share his Bar Mitzvah with family and friends.

Eden Katz will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 20, 2018. Eden is the daughter of Howard and Linda Katz and older sister to Emma Katz. Eden is a seventh grader at the High Meadows School, where her favorite subjects are social studies, art and advanced debate team. Eden is a member of the Off Broadway Children’s Theater Senior Troop and enjoys acting, singing and dancing with all of her theater friends. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, hanging with friends and playing the guitar. For her mitzvah project, Eden chose to volunteer her time at the Foster Care Support Foundation. Eden would like to thank her family and friends for celebrating this very special day with her and she would especially like to thank Cantor Nancy Kassel and Rabbi Shuval-Weiner for their support and guidance this past year.

Corinne Ginsberg will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 20, 2018. Corinne is the daughter of Nina Lempert and Ross Ginsberg and younger sister to Maddy Ginsberg. Corinne is a seventh grader at Mabry Middle School, where she participates in the Drama Club and is a student leader through Sources of Strength. Corinne is a member Roswell Dance Theatre’s Modern Company. In her spare time, Corinne enjoys acting, musical theatre, and playing the oboe. For her mitzvah project, Corinne volunteered at the Foster Care Support Foundation.

Corinne would like to thank her family and friends for celebrating this very special day with her and she would especially like to thank Lois Malkin and Rabbi ShuvalWeiner for their support and guidance this past year.

Jace Rubenstein will be called to the Torah for his Bar Mitzvah on October 27 at a place that is very special to him and his family - URJ Camp Coleman. His very proud family includes his parents, Brian and Danielle Rubenstein as well as his older brother, Jared. He is the grandson of Bill and Rhea Berger (Dunwoody), Bernie and Margie Barrie (Sarasota), and Michael Rubenstein and Hedy From (Baltimore).

Jace is a seventh grader at Autrey Mill Middle School where he plays percussion in the school band. Outside of school, he loves playing basketball, cooking, riding his bike and playing Fortnite. As part of his Bar Mitzvah preparation, Jace has greatly enjoyed many of his community service projects. This included preparing and serving meals to residents of the Zaban Shelter in midtown and participating in Family Promise at TBT. 10

SISTERHOOD Shalom TBT Sisterhood!

Our ice cream making endeavors were not only chaotic and fun, the fruits (or in this case pints and pints of Oreo Cookie ice cream) of our labor were delicious and a great success at The Drake House event! Thank you all for coming out. We really did have so much fun. There are a lot of exciting things coming up in the next few months for Sisterhood. First of all, if you haven’t already RSVP’d to our opening event on October 8th, it is not too late! Our very own Danna Leff will be leading us in an easy Zumba program, followed by schmoozing, eating and wine!! In November we will be having an awesome food demonstration and Chanukah shopping opportunity at Oli and Ve. Space will be limited so please watch out for details and respond quickly to hold your space! Many more wonderful programs are in the planning stages for December and beyond.

Building on Rabbi Shuval-Weiner’s Rosh Hashanah morning sermon, we are going to have the opportunity to share a few stories of our top ten moments in our lives. These moments might include the big moments of life cycle rituals, and they may also include every day moments, moments of struggle, and moments on vacation. We will then explore how Jewish theologians have responded throughout the years to some of these moments.

Temple Beth Tikvah Annual Food Drive (formerly known as “The Turkey Drive”) U nles s so m eo ne like yo u ca res a wh o le a wf ul lo t no th ing is go ing to get better. I t’ s no t! - Dr. Seus s It’s hard to believe that another year has ended and that once again it is time to reach out and ask you to join in the fight against hunger. By now, most of you know that during the holiday season we collect monies in $10 increments which we then convert to grocery gift cards and deliver to North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) and Jewish Family and Career Services (JF&CS).

North Fulton is not immune to the hardships life throws our way. Neither is our own community. There are thousands of families, in this area alone, who cannot feed their children, heat their homes or clothe their families.

There is not one subdivision in our area that does not have a family who has been touched by events that put them in this position.

For 25 years our goal has been to collect $10.00 from every family. Let 2018 be the year that we reach that goal.

Most of us will never miss the $10.00 just as most of us will never go to bed hungry because we cannot afford food. Please take just a minute and write out your check for $10.00 (or more) and mail it to the Temple office or go to www.bethtikvah.com click on donations and holiday food drive. Together we can make a difference in this area, in our Jewish community and to the lives of those people who cannot help themselves.

Let’s not let ourselves or our community down. A good friend to me and to Temple Beth Tikvah was Father Hendree Harrison of blessed memory. Once I heard him give a talk in which he was asking the people of St. David’s for money. He said, “I am not asking you to give until it hurts, I am asking you to give until it feels good.”

Please let us feel good about what we do to help our neighbors in need. On behalf of all who receive our help, Thank you!
