Preparing for your Journey to 5777

he New York Times recently carried a special interest story entitled Pilgrimage Checklist: Search Soul, Buy Sturdy Shoes, Pay the Dentist aptly titled after the advice the young reporter received from her father before departing on her first Hajj, or holy pilgrimage. He explained to his daughter that in order for the experience to be meaningful, it required pre-work, “you have to clear your debts even if you don’t think they are fair,” so your heart and mind may be released of the things that keep one spiritually stopped up. It got me thinking about our own “stuff”.

In closing I offer you this kavanah written by one of the great Jewish philosophers, Bachya Ibn Pakudah, in the 11 th century to help you set your intention for these upcoming Holy Days.

Preparation for Prayer If one prays with the tongue but the heart is occupied with unrelated matters, one’s prayer is like a body without a soul, like a shell that is empty of substance.

To what may we compare this?

It is like the case of a man who invited his employer to dine at home with him.

The man charged all the members of his household to serve his employer and attend to his needs — but the man left the house to occupy himself elsewhere!

So it is with us when we pray by rote, without concentrating on the words we utter.

The baal habayit (master of the house) is our mind, which directs our eyes to look at the siddur, our lips to pronounce the prayers, and our limbs to stand, sit, or bow throughout the service. But when our mind is elsewhere, of what value is our prayer?

May we enter into worship with kavanah — With attentive mind and focused heart, fully present in this moment of prayer.

In the next few days we will come together, one Jewish people, across the globe to embark on the annual spiritual pilgrimage to usher in a new year. As the Temple Beth Tikvah community we will gather to pray, sing, to share in worship. And like the advice in the Times article, our preparations must be made prior to walking through the doors of the sanctuary for our experience to have meaning and transformative power.

One of the key messages of the Holy Day liturgy is “teshuvah, tefillah u’tzedakah ma’averin et roa’ah hagezerah… repentance, prayer & righteous acts transform the severity of the decree.” In other words, although life can be difficult, even painful, it is only through the nurturing and repairing of our relationships, the giving of tzedakah (that act that brings some sense of healing to the alienated) and the work of internal reflection, that we are offered the chance to walk our life’s path a little more purposefully. And sometimes that’s the thing that simply helps us LIVE more fully.

May your Holy Days be filled with purpose and meaning.

So, in preparation, before coming to the synagogue, practice Hitbodedut. Consider taking some quiet time to collect your thoughts, breathe intentionally, and allow your mind to settle and your heart to gently open. Ask yourself, what is hanging over me that I must reconcile before I am able to stand before the Kadosh Barechu; the Holy Presence. Have I made peace, have I sought or granted forgiveness? Have I given tzedekah?

Have I “paid the dentist”? Your answers will guide you to the places and actions needed to be ready for the journey to 5777.

Notes from Cantor Kassel ERR ON THE SIDE OF COMPASSION This is the month of all months: Rosh Hashanah, Shabbat Shuvah (Sabbath between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, and Shemini Atzeret (Eighth Day of Assembly).

We are called to celebrate the beginning of a new year (5777), reflect on the past year, renew our appreciation for shelter and food (and the Supreme Provider of shelter and food), and rejoice as we complete and begin again the cycle of reading and studying from the Torah.

That’s a lot to absorb in one month’s time! You have to ask yourself, if not repeatedly, then occasionally……WHY? Why be selfreflective? Why recite prayers of gratitude to God? Why engage with the Torah?

For me….. I think it is to help us become more compassionate human beings that reflect God’s rachmanes….compassion.

We are often driven to know what is right and what is wrong, and that’s a good thing. We judge ourselves and we judge other people by our understanding of these basic concepts. We read the words in Deuteronomy “Tzedek, tzedek tirdof” - justice, justice shall you pursue. In Kabbalah, we learn that there are two sephirot or emanations of God that sit opposite each other: chesed and gevurah. Gevurah represents a strength and potential harshness with respect to judgment while chesed respresents lovingkindness.Both chesed and gevurah are a part of God just as they are a part of us. Both are necessary in and of themselves but more importantly – to balance each other.

Having shared all of this with you, more and more I am inclined to tip the balance in favor of CHESED and COMPASSION. Compassion for myself as I begin a new year and struggle with those things that keep me from being my better/best self.

Compassion for others as they continue on their life’s path, sometimes successful, sometimes stuck, sometimes moving backwards.

Compassion for all of us as we deal with things both in and out of our control.

It isn’t always about the absolutes of right and wrong, but when in doubt, I will try to ERR ON THE SIDE OF COMPASSION. Shannah tovah to all of you and a special thank you to all who helped out with our Nefesh Mountain weekend last month!

B’nai Mitzvah Garrett Goodkin will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on October 29, 2016. Garrett is the son of Aaron and Stacie Goodkin and brother to Tobi. His is the grandson of David and Martha Goodkin and Frank and Maxine Pittser. Garrett is in the 7th grade at Elkins Pointe Middle School. His hobbies include playing travel baseball with the Roswell Hornets, cross training, gaming and reading. Garrett helped put together and deliver food to families in need with Meals by Grace and will be donating ten percent of his bar mitzvah gifts to the Andrew C. Carlos MS Institute at Shepherd Center.

EJ Klotz will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on October 29, 2016. EJ is the son of Ed & Lauri

Klotz, brother to Zachary, and grandson of Bob & Donna Schacher. He is in the 8th grade at Elkins Pointe Middle School, where he plays the trumpet in the band. In his spare time, EJ likes to practice his trumpet, play with his brother and ride his bike.

Religious School This is a wonderful time as we look forward to a new year. I love the feeling of holiday and community that happens in the fall. Everyone returns from summer, school begins and for an entire month, the Jewish community is brought together with enthusiasm and renewed energy as we move towards the High Holy Days, Take a moment to literally count your blessings and give thanks to God for allowing us to reach this season. I hope 5777 is a year of new beginnings, new inspirations, and new experiences for you and your family. Think about some of the moments that illuminate things you are grateful for: your family, friends, health and happiness. To this end, I encourage you to say the Shehecheyanu. The Shehecheyanu is the blessing we say any time we do something for the first time in a year or when we experience something extra special.

A month into school, as I watch our teachers build relationships with the students, I am grateful to have such a dedicated and passionate staff to impart our Jewish traditions, heritage, and language to the next generation.

What You’ve Told Us Last spring your Board of Trustees embarked on a Listening Campaign to learn more about members’ hopes and concerns regarding your relationship with TBT. Its main objective was to gather useful information to guide the Board in determining near-term priorities as we chart the synagogue’s future growth and development.

Members generally felt that an event or experience at TBT was successful when the whole family is engaged, people can make connections and feel part of the community, and/or there is a mix of generations represented.

When asked how TBT has helped members grow in their own Judaism, the most common responses related to helping their kids learn about Judaism, participating in adult education classes, and being able to have conversations with others about Jewish topics.

In terms of suggestions for improvement, frequently-mentioned ideas included breaking down social cliques, enhancing our new member/onboarding process, strengthening the way we recruit and place volunteers, attending to how kids can build more connections during Religious School, and bolstering social action and adult education opportunities.

Each Board member was assigned a mix of members to interview, divided 50/50 between people they knew and people they didn’t know. In addition, we posted an open invitation for interested members to participate in the interview process via notices in the Next 10 Days emails and Kol Tikvah newsletters.

I am happy to report that we connected with close to 100 families (approximately 20%) during the April-through-earlyJuly interview period, speaking to at least one representative from each. A Listening Campaign support team consisting of Andrea Rubin, Dalia Faupel, and Melissa Gotlin worked tirelessly throughout these months to both manage the process and produce a final report in advance of the Board’s annual retreat in August.

This only touches on the high points of a more extensive report. If you are interested in seeing the full report, please contact me at harlanng@yahoo.com.

Here’s what you told us: The reasons that people originally chose to affiliate with a synagogue largely involved wanting a Jewish education for their children, a desire to uphold traditions and pass on a strong Jewish identity, and/or seeking a community in which they felt comfortable.

The aspects of TBT which members love the most include our clergy, the friends and social connections that they’ve made, and the relaxed “family” feeling.

At its August retreat, the Board developed an extensive list of potential projects to build on our strengths and to address the desires expressed by you during the Listening Campaign. As of this writing (just after Labor Day), we are in the process of paring that list down to the highest priorities on which we will focus our time and effort over the next year. I hope to have more information to share when I address you during Rosh Hashanah.

hile the sage Choni was walking along a road, he saw a man planting a carob tree. Choni asked him: “How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?”

“Seventy years,” replied the man. Choni then asked: “Are you so healthy a man that you expect to live that length of time and eat its fruit?” The man answered: “I found a fruitful world because my ancestors planted it for me. Likewise, I am planting for my children.” ~Talmud, Taanit 23a

If you were to evaluate your life today and carefully examine the various twists and turns that have come to define you, what is the story you would tell others? Now, consider the story others might tell about you.

There comes a point in our lives when most of us begin to think about what value we have added to the world. With any luck, as we journey from childhood to maturity, we find ways to touch the lives of others and make a difference in the world. These enduring gifts remain long after we have departed this earth and hopefully define how we are remembered for generations to come.

Congregations, like individuals, are concerned with the preservation and perpetuation of enduring values. Like individual legacies, a congregational legacy longs for ways to make a difference in the world.

At Temple Beth Tikvah, we have reached a moment in our thirty-year history which calls upon us to preserve and strengthen what our founding families have built for us. Like those who had the vision many years ago, it is now our turn to consider ways to ensure that our children and grandchildren will have the same firm commitment to Judaism and its ethical values that our founders did.

We are a congregation that is committed to nurturing relationships rooted in shared experiences, and we are dedicated to the ongoing cultivation of new and dynamic ways of engagement through worship, study, social programming and acts of loving kindness. From infants to seniors, we seek to engage individuals with opportunities to explore the values and customs of our heritage and faith while building life-long relationships with each other, the synagogue and G-d. L’Dor V’Dor is the Hebrew phrase which alludes to the legacies we leave. It means “From Generation to Generation.” We have created a legacy gift giving program called the L’Dor V’Dor Legacy Society. This effort is committed to assuring our vitality and vibrancy, our traditions and our innovations, our roots and our blossoms for many years ahead. It is the next logical step after creating our Endowment Fund over seven years ago.

The Adult Ed. committee is working to form a group of members and children and grandchildren of members who are "young" adults. We are working with a few congregants in this age group to determine which is the best breakdown of ages.

But, we also want the 40's and 50's to be involved in programming through TBT, both on site and offsite.

Daffodil Project Temple Beth Tikvah's Adult Ed Committee, Religious School and Preschool are partnering to participate in the worldwide Daffodil Project. The Daffodil Project aspires to build a worldwide living Holocaust memorial by planting 1.5 million daffodils in memory of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and in support for children who continue to suffer in the face of genocide and other humanitarian crises in the world today.

We will need people who can help prepare the soil, help with the planting (by children and adults), and various other activities. Please contact Ivie Graiser at iviegraiser@yahoo.com if you have questions, would like to participate in this project and/or to donate towards the creation of our Daffodil Memorial Garden at Temple Beth Tikvah. The actual planting will take place in November or December.

Greetings from Sisterhood!

Welcome to Sisterhood! Our opening event Sunday, 9/11/16, was a smash hit and so well attended!!

New folks to Sisterhood and the temple attended and our wonderful supporters of Sisterhood were there schmoozing, drinking lattes, noshing, and helping us plan new and exciting programs for the upcoming year. Thank you all for a great brainstorming session. Hooray! Now we are off and running with a great year ahead.

This month will be exciting as we will be making new knitting and crocheting projects through our Knit and Nosh program.

Please bring yarn and needles or hooks to Knit and Nosh, Sunday 10/9, 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in Classroom 1. If you are a newcomer to this craft, no worries; we will be happy to teach you the ins and outs of this creative endeavor.

Meditation, in partnership with Adult Education, is also slated for Sunday, 10/9, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. in the library. Please come to this inspiring hour to learn and practice meditation techniques to enhance your wellbeing. I am sure you will enjoy this instruction.

Dessert baking, a yummy time in the kitchen, is also in partnership with Adult Education, Sunday 10/30, 9:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Come and partake of learning how to make a scrumptious treat. Aprons welcome!
