Of Gratitude and Miracles There are only two ways to your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other as if everything is a miracle. Albert Einstein Recently a friend shared pictures of a fat caterpillar she found on a milkweed plant in her garden. Like many of us, she snapped a picture and went on her way. The next day however the little thing was still there, quite content to hang out protected from the birds. After day three, she found herself fascinated by the ever growing “hungry caterpillar”. At that point she realized something special was happening. Focusing her attention on the creature, recording its growth with photos, it caught the attention of others. Before long the caterpillar formed a beautiful translucent green chrysalis. The content within the capsule transformed before her eyes, her excitement was palpable. And then, it happened, a beautiful monarch butterfly emerged- through her eyes, those of us who followed her daily pictures, experienced an incredible miracle; a Shecheyeanu moment.

I believe that all of us have those moments where we find a sense of wonderment and gratitude. At this writing, Thanksgiving & Hanukkah are just around the corner, two holidays in particular when many turn their attention more deliberately to the idea of raising up miracles and counting one’s blessings.

For some it is easy, for others perhaps it can feel more of a challenge; this is the nature of the human experience. As always, we can learn much from turning to Torah. In Deuteronomy 10:12 Moses asks a rhetorical question of the Israelite people “What (Mah) does God seek of you?” The normative response according to Torah is: to stand in awe before the LORD thy God, to walk in all God’s ways, and to love God, and to serve God with all thy heart and with all thy soul. The rabbis suggest an additional response to the question, might be found in a play on the Hebrew word Mah-what, they suggest that if we read it as Me’ah, 100’ then perhaps God desires that we say 100 blessings each day. But why would God make such a request, don’t we have enough to do each and every day just simply to get by? The rabbis, and actually many of the great thinkers from numerous faiths and philosophical teachings, suggest that the purpose for saying a blessing is to nurture a healthy soul; in other words blessing helps us cultivate gratitude. By paying attention to the little things, being present in every moment, and staying open, one can actually discover what is most important in one’s life. This act of blessing something or someone assists us in discovering beauty, refining purpose; it allows a clearing away of the stuff that often holds us back from living a more meaningful, spiritually enriched, healthful, wholesome life. Gratitude aids in handling the bumps-big and small- it can help us find peace. And isn’t that just what God wants for each of us?

As crazy and fast paced as our lives have become, and with all the negativity that is so prevalent in our world today, it is easy to forget the simple daily miracles that are around us each and every day. In preparation for this season of family, let’s all consider taking time to recommit ourselves to living our lives in a heightened state of gratitude and radical amazement. Consider counting your blessings on a daily basis, now through Hanukkah or even up until December 31. Write them down, and reflect upon them. See how this practice can impact you and your outlook on life. Our lives, our relationships, even our thinking about what constitutes success, fulfillment, abundance, even happiness; all can be impacted positively when we cultivate a life of gratitude and awe.

NOTES FROM CANTOR KASSEL “CHANTS” OF A LIFETIME

If you KNOW HOW TO READ HEBREW……and perhaps chanted Torah or Haftarah sometime in your near or distant past (Bar/Bat Mitzvah?), I would like to work with you to chant one Shabbat morning when we have no Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

If you’re up to chanting Torah don’t worry about the number of verses to learn. While it is our custom to chant 3 Aliyot each Shabbat morning, you may choose to chant just ‘1’ Aliyah. A Torah Aliyah may be as few as 3 verses.

Haftarah portions vary in length but it is possible to select a section that is approximately 6-8 verses. It is not necessary to memorize a Haftarah portion without vowels…..as is the case with chanting Torah.

WHEN YOU DECIDE TO CHANT……I will help you prepare by providing the Hebrew and corresponding sound files.

We will coordinate times to work together on your verses of Torah or Haftarah.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING—SUSAN COSDEN “If there is no bread, there is no Torah. If there is no Torah, there is no bread.”

(Pirke Avot 3:17) Last month our religious school teachers and madrichim came together to study and learned about breakout education, education based on the same concepts as Escape Rooms. Our activities were based on matching Jewish texts with modern educational philosophy. This quote from Pirke Avot 3:17 was paired with Abraham H. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Together we discussed how no learning can happen and certainly students are not able to self-actualize unless they feel safe physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

This is the theoretical concept behind why we created Keshet Time and have Keshet Time as the start of our day. Our goal at Temple Beth Tikvah? A classroom that is a true community (kehillah), that values its relationships and each other. A community that cares about each other, and has fun together. A true House of Hope (Beth Tikvah)!

Keshet (aka Opening Circle, Morning Meeting): What is it?

Starting this year at Temple Beth Tikvah, we will start school with Keshet (Rainbow) time at the beginning of each class session. Each Sunday morning our classes will spend about 20 minutes focused on getting to know each other better, focused towards becoming a community (kehillah) that respects and cares for each other. In addition to building community, Keshet time allows us to help students develop their social/ emotional skills and their collaboration skills.

Why is it called Keshet (rainbow)?

Each grade this year will be connected with a specific color, e.g. red, blue, or white. They will be called by the Hebrew word for that color, e.g. adom, kachol, or lavan. Therefore, as they spend time focusing on their class and/or grade community, as a synagogue community we will be celebrating the entire rainbow of Temple Beth Tikvah's religious school. One teacher summarized Keshet in the following way, “We are different like the colors of the rainbow and yet we are all human beings and all Jews, all part of the rainbow.” Together, we hope to be a sign to each other and for each other to make the world better and fulfill our covenantal relationship with one another and with God. Not only are our religious school students sharing Keshet Time, our teachers and madrichim have now requested their own Keshet Time during staff development meetings. This new component in our meetings will begin on November 11.

Adult Learning Opportunity What have your ever thought about a meaningful Jewish life look like?

You choose an individual study topic that is personally interesting to you, adopt a new ritual or deepen an existing practice, and engage in a social action activity in your community. Then, at the end of the program, you can celebrate your journey!

Classes will meet monthly on the following Tuesdays from 7:00—8:30 pm: November 13, December 11, January 8, February 12, March 12, April 9, May 7, and June 11.

YOUTH GROUP “Help – I want my child to get involved in youth group, but they just won’t try it!”

I hear this phrase quite often from parents. They know and understand the benefits of youth group, they support it, and want their kids to be involved, but their kids just aren’t interested. Here is what I tell them, “Sign them up. Force your kid to go.” Once your child (or teen) is at an event I can do my part to make sure they have a good time and enjoy themselves. That means I’ll make sure there is someone – a chaperone, parent or teen – to greet them when they walk in the door so they feel welcome. I will make sure they know what’s going on, where to go, understand the customs and instructions. I’ll make sure that they have someone to sit with at meals and partner up with during activities. If it’s a HOTTY event, I’ll make sure that our Membership Vice-President follows up with them – calls them to say thanks for coming to the event and tell them all about the next one. That’s my job. Your job is to get them there! In order for your child or teen to even see if they like youth group, they have to attend an event ( I’d actually say, a few events) and sometimes, the only way to get them there is to force them. Last year (ironically, at a HOTTY event) we had a bouncy house. Zach (my 2.5 year old) didn’t want to go in it. In fact, when I encouraged him and told him how much fun it was, he refused and started crying. So, what did I do? I pulled him on (yes, still crying and refusing to go).

At first, he sat there while I jumped and bounced him up and down. But gradually the tears stopped, a smile spread across his face, and low and behold, he started jumping! So, yes, I may have been the terrible parent who dragged their crying child onto a bouncy house, but I knew he was going to love it. I just had to get him on it! Like it did for Zach, what I also tell parents is that (most of the time) forcing them works. (And if you don’t believe me, just ask Alicia Hirsch – who told me I could write that!) Your child may not have a great time or make a new best friend at their first event.

They might be mad at you for pushing and dragging them to youth group. But years down the road, when our HOTTY teens are making their senior speeches, I can tell you that many of them thank their parents for forcing them to attend.

So, contrary to what our kids might think, sometimes, as parents we really do know what’s best and its our job to make that happen for our kids. Trust me, they’ll thank you later!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Life is Sacred, and We are Obligated to Help Others Book of Mishlei (Proverbs) 31:20 She stretched out her hand to the poor and she reached forth her hands to the needy.

Recently during a family discussion, we had a wonderful discussion of how fresh, clean and delicious food tasted in Europe and Israel. The conversation went on to discuss the “farm to table” movement of recent years and how many countries have lived that way for years. We talked about the bountiful amount of fresh fruit and vegetables even for breakfast unlike the typical eggs, biscuit, heavy breakfast here. We also talked about canned, boxed and processed foods.

During our discussion we talked about the difference in sizes of refrigerators in the US and overseas. I also started to think about waste and hunger. I find myself cleaning out and throwing away a fair amount of spoiled food and leftovers every week or two. We fill our trashcan and recycling bin each week with trash and recyclables. How many others of us do that? I had also recently read an article recently about the number of people that are suffering from hunger or food insecure, especially children.

With our big round of holidays over and now the next round of secular and not so secular celebrations upon us, we are going to be surrounded by platters of hors d’oeuvres, main dishes, side items and tons and tons of desserts and pies. However, something that we may not want to celebrate is the fact that so much of that food ends up in landfills. Dana Gunders, a scientist with Natural Resources Defense Council, made a discovery in 2012 during a research project. She discovered that nearly 40% of food in the US went uneaten and waste from that food made up 21% of all landfill trash. “We are all becoming numb to how much food is thrown out.” She said. Five years later she also released another report, which found that food remains emitted as much methane as 37 million cars annually.

Fortunately, though, many retailers, chefs, and community organizers have tried to find ways to cut down on waste. However, we still have an almost 13-15% struggle of American households trying to put food on the table. You, our friends and family at TBT, can help too by shopping and cooking mindfully, and sharing with others.

At Yom Kippur, one of the afternoon “electives” was to pack lunches for local school children who don’t have enough to eat. We have also made over 200 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches twice at the synagogue in under an hour to donate to the Drake house and NFCC. As many of you know the month of November is when we begin our annual food drive. Please, PLEASE consider donating this year. For just $10, you can put food on the table of a family in need. That is the same as two Starbucks coffees, less than one movie ticket, less than the optional upgrade on many cellphone plans, and a one-month subscription to Ipsy. It is easy and painless. Our ECEC students even do it, so you can too. Reach out to Marsha Mathis or myself. Drop off a donation in the mail, on the website or by the office. Every little bit helps.

Another thing that I personally have been wanting to try to do at home is be more proactive by meal planning, cooking ahead, and trying to use what I have. I have noticed we can eat together a bit more often. We tend to eat less on the run. We can save some money. I use the store apps to shop and plan my grocery trips. I will try to cut back on the amount I too waste. Planning helps with this. WE also all grew up with our grandparents and parents using all of something, maybe even the bones to make a broth. Yuck, you say, but according to chefs maybe they were on to something. Use all your food. You may be surprised.

I watched a documentary about food waste. It showed the amount of food grocery stores throw out because it is bruised or ugly or may be getting close to the “best by” date. The documentary also showed how since the 1950s American foods have been modified to appear “prettier” and “bigger” when the reality is we eat with all 5 senses. The best tasting apple may not be the reddest and the yummiest carrot may be the wrinkled crooked one. In some areas, you can get reduced prices for “uglier” food. I know Kroger offers that in some produce areas. Eat your leftovers. Come up with some new recipes. Better yet, share what you have.

As the days get colder, our Men’s club supports the Zaban Shelter. Offer to help make a meal or two each month by reaching out to Bart Schwartz. Help Blessing in A Backpack for kids in schools over the weekend. Help with Family Promise. Do something with the Tzedek Committee. Chat with the Rabbi or I about how you can help. You too can reach out your hands to the needy.

Look at those lumps of flesh!” The Holy Blessed One says to the rich person, “It is not enough that you have not given him anything of yours and helped him out, but you must set an evil eye upon (make fun of/mock) what I have given him, must you?”

COMMITTEE UPDATES Dear congregants of Temple Beth Tikvah, Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped support the Family Promise program this September. We had 12 guests for an entire week and we were fortunate enough to have volunteers make a meal, stay the night, help with laundry and help to set-up/take down. We cannot support this program without your help. Our next host week will be the week of February 17, 2019. Mark your calendar now and be on the lookout for the sign -up invitation. This is an important service to help our community.

Adopted Road Clean Up TBT has adopted a one-mile stretch of Pine Grove Road from Coleman to Hightower Trail in association with Keep Roswell Beautiful. We need groups of 10 to volunteer for cleanup sessions (gloves, vests and bags provided.) Each participant must be over 10 years old.

B’NAI MITZVAH Aidan Hegarty will be called to the Torah for his Bar Mitzvah on November 3, 2018. Aidan is the son of Meredith Hegarty and Paul Hegarty and brother of Jake Hegarty. Aidan's very proud grandparents Roni Adelman (Roswell), Patricia Hegarty (Wicklow, Ireland), and Peter Hegarty (Cavan, Ireland) are thrilled to share this occasion with their grandson. Aidan is a 7th grader at Holcomb Bridge Middle School where he plays the trumpet in the school band. Aidan enjoys basketball, tennis, baseball and swimming. Aidan spends his summers at Camp Barney Medintz, and is looking forward to his 5th summer at His Summer Place.

In preparation for his Bar Mitzvah, Aidan participated in activities that helped him feel closer to Judaism. In addition, Aidan volunteered in helping to clean TBT's newly adopted highway, and helped by being a gracious host for Family Promise at TBT. Aidan would like to thank his family and friends for joining us in celebrating this important milestone. He would especially like to express gratitude to Cantor Nancy Kassel, Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Rachel Wilson for all of their support and guidance.

Cooper Lawson Salinas will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 3, 2018. Lawson is the son of Jules and Chad Salinas and brother to Parker and Sloan. He is a 7th grade honor student at Elkins Pointe Middle School where he enjoys learning French and playing the trombone.

He loves his home-away-from-home Camp Coleman, reading, playing video games with his friends and playing with his dog Izzie. Lawson has enjoyed volunteering and learning during his 13 Mitzvot project and, in honor of this week’s Torah portion, he will be contributing a portion of his savings to Fair Trade Certified.

Grace Bradlie Engel will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on November 17, 2018. Grace is the daughter of Jennifer and Lee Engel and older sister to Maddie. She is in the seventh grade at Crabapple Middle School (CMS) where she plays violin in the orchestra.

Outside of school, Grace is a proud member of Roswell Youth Theater (RYT), where she has performed in several plays. She also enjoys singing, DIY craft projects, the beach, hanging out with her friends and family, babysitting and summers at Camp Barney.

SISTERHOOD Hello Sisterhood!

Our October opening event was fabulous! Danna Leff lead us in a Zumba program that was in even parts invigorating, challenging and fun! Thank you, Danna, for your enthusiasm and expertise! Thank you to Marcia Haber and Jenni Trebon for providing a delicious meal from Zoe’s Kitchen and organizing a very successful event. And thank you to all my clean up fairies for their help at the end of the night.

We ended up collecting 3 boxes full of gently- used exercise garb for The Mary Hall Freedom House. Good job everyone!!!

The weather is getting cooler, and we are now looking forward to the holiday season. We light the first Chanukah candle on December 2nd!! With Chanukah in mind, save the date for our next event coming up on November 15th, an evening demonstration of at least 10 quick recipes featuring the great products at Oli and Ve! Of course, there will be tasting and ample opportunity for shopping!! Space is limited, so if you haven’t already done so, and there is still room, make sure you look for the Evite and RSVP as soon as you can.

FAMILIES ANONYMOUS A little more than seven years ago, the worst thing in my life happened.

Shortly thereafter, the best thing in my life happened.

Addiction hit our family in early 2011, and there’s no worse feeling than that of powerlessness when a loved one is struggling. You fear for their life and there's nothing you can do about it. You may feel pain, fear, anger, shame, guilt or all of the above. Often there's a tendency to isolate, hoping the problem just magically goes away.

I wrote about the parallel roads of recovery for a parent and a child in 2015 when I worked for the Atlanta JournalConstitution. The story, titled, "Lost and Found," can be found online if you Google the words, “Jeff Schultz Lost and Found,” or type this link into your browser: http://personaljourneys.myajc.com/lost-found/ I believed I knew a lot of about addiction and recovery before it ever hit our family. I soon came to realize I didn’t know anything. So I set about to educate myself. My wife, Jeanne, and I were told that we should start working our own recovery program and attend meetings of a parallel recovery group like Families Anonymous or Al Anon. My first thought was common: “Why do I need to go to a meeting? I’m not the drug addict.”

But we followed the advice of others. We attended several meetings around town. We eventually settled on a Families Anonymous group right here at Temple Beth Tikvah that was started by fellow congregants. We learned about the do’s and don'ts of a parallel recovery program – concepts like enabling, boundaries, “Detaching with love” and taking care of ourselves.

The readings, the fellowship and the experience, strength and hope shared by others truly have been life-changing for us, not just in the areas of recovery but in our entire lives: marriage, relationships, work, situations and people we come into contract with in everyday life. My life is better today than it ever has been, even before the worst thing that ever happened to me.

If you have a loved one who is struggling, support is there for you. Our F.A. group meets every Monday night at 7:15 p.m. in the Oneg Room. It’s a completely anonymous program. DAVID MOSS David began his career when he fell in love of Hebrew calligraphy in 1968. He is responsible for the revival of the hand-made Ketubah, created an important Haggadah and is a partner in the Tree of Life Shtender project. Whether creating books, prints, ritual objects, educational programs, or helping design Jewish communal buildings, David synthesizes text and tradition with the spark of creativity and meticulous craftsmanship. He co-founded Kol HaOt, which harnesses the power of the arts for Jewish inspiration, leads The Teachers Institute for the Arts, which brings his educational vision into day schools throughout North America and produces an ongoing series of limited editions works for a group of individual and institutional subscribers.
