We pause to think of those men and women who served this country defending the American values of democracy, liberty, and tolerance. It is because of those who served both those who died in battle and those who returned safely - that the Jewish community found a home that was safe and secure. After being expelled from dozens of lands over hundreds of years, the United States has been a haven for the Jewish people. As Americans and as Jews, we express thanksgiving for all who donned the uniform.

From 2005 to 2008, she interviewed Israeli and international leaders as moderator of “Meet the Press.” As Channel 2’s legal affairs correspondent, she covered high-profile legal stories. Weiss has covered eight national election campaigns, the Lebanon war in 2007, and the Gaza wars in 2008 and 2012. She also covered the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, the terror attacks of the second Palestinian uprising, and the continuing peace negotiations. She has produced investigative documentaries on a variety of subjects, including overuse of antibiotics and the loss of privacy.
My own father and grandfather served this country. Along with tens of thousands of other Jewish military, they contributed to making our country the "land of the free and the home of the brave." If you see a veteran on November 11th (and on any day), go up and say, "thank you." It will be a meaningful moment for you and for him or her. Do You Have a Hebrew Name? Naming Service to take place on Shabbat Shemot - Friday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. What’s in a name? Hebrew names are not only a reflection of who we are, but also a statement of who we would like to be. However, there are many in our community who either were not given a Hebrew name or have forgotten theirs. On Saturday, January 21, we will begin reading the book of Exodus. The Hebrew name for this Torah portion is Shemot, which translated means “names.” During the Friday evening service, which begins at 6:30 p.m., we will be having a special naming service for any Jewish member of our congregation who would like a Hebrew name - no matter what your age. A certificate will be given to each person and the name will be recorded for posterity in our Temple records. If you are interested in receiving a Hebrew name for yourself or your child, please contact Rabbi Shuval-Weiner by January 1, 2017.

B’nai Mitzvah Ethan Henry Rodabaugh will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 12, 2016. Ethan is 13 years old and an Eighth grader at Crabapple Middle School. He enjoys building and engineering and is currently building a solar powered go-cart that he plans on entering into a contest. Ethan also likes gaming and creating his own games. His big project right now is building his own gaming computer. Garrett A. Pickett will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 19, 2016. Garrett is the son of Jason and Melanie Pickett and brother to Morgan and Tessa. He is in seventh grade honors classes at Elkins Pointe Middle School. He plays soccer for the Rush Select team, is an avid reader and enjoys his new puppy.
Zachary Pacifico will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 19, 2016. Zach is the son of Todd and Vivian Pacifico and brother to Arianna Pacifico. He is in the 7th grade at Mabry Middle School where he participates in two school bands as a trumpet player and percussionist. Zach also enjoys playing the guitar. Because he loves music, Zach decided to raise funds for the Music and Memory program at Jewish Family & Career Services. This program provides ipods, headphones, and iTunes gift cards to an elder with dementia. Zach’s other activities include playing soccer, airsofting, playing video games, and reading.

They plan on incorporating more social action opportunities (be the change!!) into their programming, and strengthening the relationship with the synagogue as a whole. The month of November has lots of exciting events such as the first ever HOTTY Hoedown and the continuation of our newly themed lounge nights. NFTY-SAR’s, (the larger region HOTTY is a part of) Fall Kallah is also upon us this month. This year the HOTTY board will also be striving to expand leadership opportunities outside of their current board to give those who want to take part in leadership an opportunity. FUN IN THE ECEC !! Religious School October around the Religious School was balanced between two things: Celebrations and learning. The month began with the high holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The Sukkah was decorated with many art projects made by our children. A lot of studying was done and joyful celebrations were had by all. The children at Temple Beth Tikvah have settled into their routines with ease. It is a pleasure for me to see the children so proud of their accomplishments. On Sunday, October 23rd we welcomed our newest students, the Kindergarten Class, into the religious school during the Consecration Ceremony. Hearing them chant the Shema for the first time in front of the congregation is a sound like no other. It is the sound of the next generation of Judaism beginning to grow and develop. It is the sound of the future. We are always reading Torah, we never stop, the cycle is never ending. It was so exciting to see the whole Torah unrolled before us and hear the very last words of Deuteronomy and the very first words of Genesis as we began the annual reading cycle again. Before the night was through, the congregants paraded with all the Torah’s bringing them into the community. Every year at this time we remark how quickly the seasons change as the leaves fall and the days grow shorter. We just finished celebrating the Jewish High Holy Days, and we are already talking about plans for Thanksgiving. Whether we are observing religious holidays or secular, there are always special meals and foods associated with the celebrations, shopping and preparations to do, relatives and friends to invite. We never doubt for a minute that from year to year, holiday to holiday, we will always be enjoying the wonderful tastes, smells and pleasures of each particular holiday. Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Confirmation Class of 5777 and Confirmation Class of 5787 On Sunday October 23rd our Kindergarten students were consecrated. The confirmation class of 5777 escorted our future confirmation class of 5787 to the Bimah during their consecration ceremony. Congratulations to the Kindergarten students. You did a great job! 6
A Torah Study Milestone… And a New Beginning It’s taken us seven years! We finally finished to a rousing rendition of Siman tov u’Mazel tov! Seven years ago, TBT’s Saturday-morning Torah study group decided to depart from tradition and methodically read each and every line of the Torah from beginning to end while encouraging frequent pauses for questions and Rabbi-led discussions. At the end of September that process was completed and a great sense of accomplishment was felt by all the participants. So… this means we must start anew.
2. If we put even a little effort into it, Torah study helps us become better people! In his book Code of Jewish Ethics, Volume 1, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin writes that: Judaism regards improving character as the goal of life. As the Midrash teaches, “The Torah’s commandments were not given to mankind for any other purpose than to refine people” (Genesis Rabbah 44:1). The Rabbis did not say that it is one of the purposes of the Torah and its commandments to improve our character, but that this is their sole purpose.
I’d like to announce that following a hiatus for the Holidays, our Saturday Torah study class will restart on November 12 but at a new time and with a new format. We’ll be experimenting with scheduling the class after Shabbat morning services instead of before. That is, after services are over around noon we’ll each grab a Kiddush lunch plate and then gather to start the class around 12:30, probably in the school lobby. When there is no Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the class will take place in the social hall. Regarding the format, we will return to a traditional approach with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner leading a discussion of that week’s parashah or Torah portion. The Torah study class will now be known as ‘Rabbi’s Table’.
3. I’ve learned that an untrained lay person like myself will only derive about 5% of the meaning of the Torah from a plain reading of it on his or her own. As just one small example, there’s no way I would ever have connected the laws in Leviticus for dealing with someone who has a skin disease with the prohibition against evil speech. For the vast majority of us, it takes a trained Rabbi to help us understand both the historical context and the centuries of Rabbinic interpretation which inform our modern understanding of Torah.
The class is open to all who want a taste of adult-level Torah learning, from sixth-graders to retirees. No experience is required! Just bring your curiosity, a desire to learn more about your Jewish heritage, and your own questions or doubts about how Torah can relate to our lives today.
4. It’s actually fun, particularly if you’re a learning geek like me. You get to experience a lot of “Aha!” moments about Judaism, you engage in meaningful conversations with others from your community, and you get to spend quality time with our rabbi who often has funny, entertaining, and/or challenging comments to spark our own thinking.
Why do I think it’s worthwhile for you to engage in Torah study with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner? Let me count the ways: 1.
There are a couple of spots in our Shabbat service where we summarize our highest duties with a short list of our key Jewish obligations, ending with “… but the study of Torah is equal to them all, because it leads to them all. Let us learn in order to teach. Let us learn in order to do!”
As the V’ahavta prayer implies, lifelong study of Torah is one of our fundamental obligations as a Jew. It roots us in who we are, where we came from, what values we hold dear, and how we should live our lives. Do we really know those things well enough to “teach them diligently to our children” and to “speak of them when you sit at home, when you walk along the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up”? (That’s my hand you see not being raised). If we want to role-model what we’ve told our kids about Judaism being important, participating in Torah study for one hour a week would be a great way of demonstrating that.
We’d love to grow the number of members willing to dip their toe into the invigorating waters of Torah study. I invite you to join us for our ‘new-and-improved’ (er, make that old-and-improved) Rabbi’s Table starting on November 12th around 12:30. Add it to your calendars! L’Shalom,

Make Your Annual Campaign Commitment Worthy of a Thirty Year Anniversary

halom! By now you have received a letter from the TBT Fundraising Committee encouraging you to participate in the 2016-2017 Annual Campaign – Celebrating 30 Years.
A Special Time in the Life of Our Congregation As we begin this year of reflection, celebration and recommitment, we remain a strong and vibrant community looking to the future with renewed optimism and anticipation. Rabbi Shuval-Weiner has begun her second year at TBT and is making meaningful impacts through her leadership on the pulpit and in every other aspect of congregational life. She and Cantor Kassel have formed an incredible partnership, and Rabbi Tam continues to educate and inspire us. We have already been treated to an unforgettable musical and spiritual weekend with Jewish bluegrass artists Nefesh Mountain. But that was just the start. Many other special activities are planned throughout the year, including two Scholars in Residence events, a weeklong Artist in Residence, and a celebration honoring Hassia Levin, a TBT founding member and its 30-year Education Director, to describe just a few. As TBT enters its fourth decade, sustaining and improving our community is a top priority. We are already enhancing programming across a number of areas, including social action, adult education, youth, young adults, young families and empty nesters. We are working diligently to maintain and update our aging facilities, and we are preparing today for needs that we know are coming down the road. Your Participation in the Annual Campaign is Essential for TBT’s Future Perhaps it goes without saying, but none of our success as a congregation – past, present or future – is possible without the financial support generated through Nadiv Lev and our supplemental fundraising. The Annual Campaign is a vital element of this funding. Please consider making a pledge to the Annual Campaign today. If you are in a position to do so, we ask that you consider a multi-year pledge. This offers two advantages. First, it will help secure the promise of future income that will allow us to plan ahead more confidently. Second, it means that when it comes to the Annual Campaign, you can “set it and forget it,” at least for the length of your commitment! TBT is pulsating with so much excitement and momentum. Greetings from Sisterhood! Happy Fall to you! Sisterhood has been so active lately planning events that were brainstormed by all of you at our opening event in September. Just to let you know, some related ideas for events have been combined, some event ideas have been referred to other committees due to their content, and some are in the planning stages. The Sisterhood committee thanks you again for your support and creativity in helping to plan our year! We encourage you to actively become involved and attend our committee meetings as they are open to all. Our next committee meeting is Sunday, November 13th, at 9:45 a.m. in the conference room. We hope to see you there. Many thanks are in order to Gail Tate, who presented a wonderful session on meditation 10/9/16. This was truly inspirational and educational. What a valuable experience indeed! A yummy time was enjoyed by all in the kitchen making rugelach on 10/30/16. Thanks to Bonnie Walkes and Karen Blender for this fun and creative morning! Great desserts filled the air! Our next Mah Jongg morning is Sunday, 11/6/16, 9:45 – 12:00 p.m. in the Social Hall. We welcome new, “medium” and advanced players. We can teach you how to play so come along and join the fun. Please bring cards and sets if you have them handy. Knit and Nosh continues this fall as we meet monthly to knit and crotchet. The projects we will be working on include scarves for the homeless (any washable yarn, any pattern, at least 5 ft. long), “blankies” for children sheltered at The Drake House or children who are in foster care (yarn: Caron Simply Soft; any color, any pattern9X9 inch squares), and afghans for teenagers at The Drake House or teens who are 18 and leaving the foster care system (yarn: Charisma; any color, any pattern-12X12 inch squares).
