A MESSAGE FROM RABBI SHUVAL-WEINER You shall count from the eve of the second day of Pesach, when an omer of grain is to be brought as an offering, seven complete weeks. The day after the seventh week of your counting will make fifty days.

(Leviticus 23) What is this mitzvah we call Counting the Omer?

There are three interpretations of the counting of the omer, based upon the three understandings from Torah: Agricultural: During the times of the ancient Temple, this was the season of the ripening of grain in the field. The daily grain offering was collected, helping the farmers to delineated between the two harvest periods when they were to bring their grain offerings/tithes to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Prayers were directed toward Gd, asking for appropriate amounts of rain fall and protection from drying winds, so their crops would be abundant. Today, from an ecological perspective, counting keeps us mindful of nature’s power and earth’s fragility.

Sacred Historical: We count these days between the Exodus from Mitzrayim and the celebration of receiving Torah (our guiding principles) at Sinai. It marks our religious and historical march from oppression to freedom, from degradation to responsibility. By counting upward, we mark the thrill of engagement with our Gd and the embracing of a particular way of living in the world, as Or L’Goyim, a light unto the nations. We count the days to show our excitement at again receiving the Torah into our lives through continued study and passing it on to our children. This activity of counting serves as a reminder that we must renew our commitment to the Torah’s wisdom every year.

Spiritual: We use this period of weeks to spiritually prepare and refine ourselves. These are the days of our spiritual redemption. In kabbalah each of the 49 days of the Omer represents one of the combinations of the Sefirot (Divine emanations) and in a Kabbalistic prayer, the worshipper entreats God to help him or her lead a pure life and pardon them for any behavioral flaws. We can see this as a 49-step program that clarifies our behavior and can help us to reset our moral compass. Some people study Pirkei Avot (the first chapter of the Mishnah, which consists mostly of advice on proper behavior and attitude) during this season.

Do Reform Jews practice this Mitzvah?

Short answer YES! How to Count the Omer The omer is counted each evening after sundown. One stands and begins by reciting the following blessing:

Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha’Olam asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tizivanu al sefirat ha’omer.

Blessed are you, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who has sanctified us with your commandments and commanded us to count the omer. After the blessing, one recites the appropriate day of the count. *The counting this year continues through Saturday June 8th.

Why Count the Omer?

A teaching from Rabbi Yael Levy of A Way In Why count? Why stand up each night as three stars appear in the sky and for 49 days in a row count the day that is to come? What is the purpose, the meaning? I have asked myself these questions many times over the years as I approach the Omer season. This is some of what I have discovered: Standing each night to count the day that is coming helps me be awake to the passage of time. It reminds me again and again that everything passes, everything changes. All life is in constant motion.

Counting the day that I am entering requires that I let go of what has been. I often feel myself grasping, seeking to hold onto an experience, a feeling. The counting helps me honor all that has happened as it awakens wonder and curiosity of what might occur next. The counting inspires the perspective that it is OK to let go because there is always something new to explore and experience.

The tradition teaches that we are not to say the day that is to come until that moment when we are saying the blessing and mindfully counting. This part of the tradition reminds me to be where I am—to stay present in each day and then when the time comes, to let it go so I step fully into what will be.

Over the years the counting has helped me know the wisdom of letting go with grace. It has strengthened my ability to be grateful, to stay present in each moment and to trust that each new day will bring forward a new gift. It has taught me that even as everything passes and all life changes there is always something we can count on.

May the counting guide us with grace and love.

NOTES FROM CANTOR KASSEL Why don’t ALL Jews have the same Torah reading calendar?

While all Jews can agree on the practice of chanting (preferable over ‘reading’) and studying Torah, there are a variety of practices when it comes to the calendar for assigning the Torah’s 54 portions to weeks of the year. Most communities divide the 54 portions so that they are covered within the course of one calendar year. Still other communities follow a tradition of spreading the 54 portions over three years, known as the triennial cycle. In the triennial cycle, the first third of each parashah (Torah portion) is read in one year, the second third is read the following year and the final third in the third year.

For those following the annual Torah reading cycle, differences begin to arise between Jews who observe an additional first and last day of major holidays and those who do not.

As early as 1846, the Reform rabbis in the German states, assembled in conference in Breslau, had declared that the Diaspora “second-day” observance of Festivals (observance of the 2nd and 8th days of Pesach, the 2nd day of Shavuot, Sukkot, and Shemini Atzeret, “have lost their meaning for our time.”

With the exception of a second day of Rosh HaShanah, Reform Jews do not observe additional first and last days of major holidays, for which there are additional Torah readings. When the ‘additional’ last day of Pesach or Shavuot occur on Shabbat…..the Reform movement’s Torah reading cycle becomes temporarily out-of-synch with those communities that observe additional first and last days of major holidays. Such will be the case this year, between April 27 and August 10.

This year, on April 27, the Reform Movement will resume the annual Torah reading cycle from the Shabbat prior to Pesach and will be chanting/studying parashah “Achare Mot”.

Meanwhile, for those who observe an additional first and last day of Pesach, they will be chanting/studying a part of the Torah that is outside of the linear cycle and will assign “Achare Mot” to the following Shabbat. We will then be out-of-synch with the assignment of Torah portions until August 10, with parashat “Devarim”, the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy.

It’s confusing, all the more so, because most published Jewish calendars will not reflect the Reform Movement’s Torah reading cycle. To help you out, here is what Temple Beth Tikvah will be observing in the coming months: April 27: Achare Mot; May 4: Kedoshim; May 11: Emor; May 18: Behar; May 25: Bechukotai; June 1: Bemidbar; June 8: Naso; June 15: Beha’alot’cha; June 22: Shelach L’cha; June 29: Korach; July 6: Chukat; July 13: Balak; July 20: Pinchas July 27: Matot; Aug. 3: Mase.

I hope this clears up some of the understandable confusion for you.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The more things change, the more we need to remember who we are and why we came here. Why was Temple Beth Tikvah built and why we did we choose Temple Beth Tikvah? Why did our Founding Families want a congregation that was Reform yet more traditional? I often tell my children "Remember who you are...." Very often in Judaism we are reminded in a number of ways to remember, lest we forget. Haazinu reminds us to remember as Moses was dying to remember God brought to the promised land. We were just reminded at Pesach to remember God brought us out of Mitzrahim. Remembering is a commandment in Judaism.

Reform synagogues all over face a series of existential challenges right now. Synagogues in general are facing a series of existential crises.

That’s one of the messages I heard when I attended Scheidt Seminar, a program for synagogue presidents and presidents-elect from all over North America. The Union for Reform Judaism organizes the Scheidt Seminar to give lay leaders the tools we need to manage our synagogues as effectively as possible. It's also the message I heard from Federation during The Front Porch project. So what does all of this really mean?

This statement serves as a wake-up call. The challenges or opportunities for growth we see ahead at Temple Beth Tikvah include facilities in need of repair, a shrinking building fund reserve, an even tighter budget and shrinking religious school enrollment — these are hardly unique to TBT, the outer arc of Greater Atlanta or even organized religion in general. Unfortunately, there are congregations preparing for mergers with other synagogues as well as leaders of congregations that can’t afford to have a full-time rabbi. This saddens me, yet helps me feel confidence in Temple Beth Tikvah. We have a valuable piece if land, a strong and vibrant endowment fund, stable membership, incredible clergy, dedicated leadership, a good school, and fantastic programming, but most importantly we have you, There are five (some say six) generations of Jewish Americans alive right now, each with distinct needs and, in some cases, competing ideas about what synagogue life should look like.

Nationally, there are huge numbers of Jews who have not chosen to be members of any congregation. Rabbi Rick Jacobs, president of the Reform movement has encouraged synagogue presidents to consider these Jews “uninspired” rather than “unaffiliated,” and he asked us to think about what we can do to extend a warmer, more meaningful invitation to them.

Part of being a Reform Jew is being open to change and responding to the world as it is today. I’m confident Temple Beth Tikvah can do that. However, we can respond to the world by remembering who we are, not by trying to be who they are. Think about why you came to Temple Beth Tikvah and share that with me when you get a chance. I shared a year ago that I wanted Temple Beth Tikvah to be the "Shul with a Soul". The Rabbi, Cantor, Board and I are still working on continuing to be just that. We want to remember who we are.

STAFF UPDATE Sheri Baker will be joining the Temple Beth Tikvah staff as our Acting Preschool Director.

She has been around TBT for a couple of decades, first as a congregant and active parent of two young men who have come up through our religious school and HOTTY youth group. Sheri holds a degree in special education and began her career teaching at Dunwoody High School. After having children, Sheri began teaching at Temple Sinai in Atlanta.

It was through her involvement at TBT and the religious school that Rhonda Povlot engaged Sheri in taking on the leadership of the preschool. Sheri served TBT as the director of the preschool from 2005-2007. until such time that she returned to the classroom at Temple Beth Tikvah where she taught for the next ten years with many of the current preschool teachers. As we move through our transition, Sheri readily agreed to become the acting director while the search committee begins the search process. She is excited to assist and lead the school during this transition. Sheri is married to her husband Brian and they have two children Zach (22) and Drew (20). She is active with the Guide Dog Foundation as a part time puppy raiser and LOVES to travel.

Eric Chanin joined the TBT Admin staff as of April 8 replacing Jenny Korsen as Financial Secretary - who, as previously announced, is retiring as of April 30.

Eric and his wife Pam have been members of the TBT community since 1997. They have 3 children who were all Bar/Bat Mitzvah at TBT; Sarah 28, Matthew 26,and Joey 20. Eric recently retired from AT&T after 31 years. His most recent positions there included Lead Financial & Planning Analysis Manager for various organizations including Marketing & Advertising, Mobility Consumer Digital, Mobility Customer Care and Advertising Solutions. In those positions he provided budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis and other financial analysis expertise. Previously, he was also Associate Director of Investor Relations at BellSouth providing financial analysis and communications to the investment community.

Eric graduated from the University of Georgia with an MBA in Finance and a BBA in Accounting.

YOUTH GROUP At NFTY-SAR Spring Kallah last month I was awarded Lifetime Membership in NFTY-SAR. I was incredibly touched and moved, not only by the award, but that during the ceremony 3 former HOTTY presidents spoke as well as one of the presidents from Temple Sinai Youth Group in Denver, CO, where I started out as a youth group advisor many years ago.

It got me thinking – after 16 years, what do I hope I’ve left behind? What do I hope the teens that I’ve been able to work with have walked away with? Or what has stuck with them long after they’ve left youth group? Here’s what I came up with…I hope that they go out into the world more confident; that they feel good about their strengths and are aware of where they still need to grow. I hope they’ve learned to work as part of a team, be accountable when others are relying on them, and know how to manage their time to meet goals and deadlines. I hope I’ve taught them to ask for help when they need it, be able to apologize when they’ve dropped the ball, and take responsibility for their actions. When they leave TBT I want them to find a place where they can excel and be a leader, and also know that it’s just as valuable to be part of the group. I really hope I’ve taught them how to have balance in their lives – that youth group, friends, and fun are just as important as school and work. While other youth groups might be shying away from it, we still hold formal elections because I believe our teens need to lose sometimes. They need to know that it’s ok to fail and how to pick themselves up and move forward afterwards. Lastly, and most importantly, I hope I’ve taught them to be caring and compassionate people, to smile and hug one another, to connect with others and cherish the relationships in their lives. The relationships that they’ve allowed me to build with them are incredibly important, and truly, the reason that I’m still here after all these years!

SISTERHOOD Shalom Sisterhood!

As April comes to a close, I must reflect on one of the most rewarding events for me in TBT Sisterhood recent history, the 3rd Annual TBT Sisterhood Women’s Seder. This magical evening was beautifully lead by our outstanding clergy, Rabbi Shuvel-Weiner and Cantor Kassel. Over sixty women sitting around a gorgeously set massive table reading from a Haggadah that was put together specifically for this evening (thank you Cantor Kassel!).

I could go on and on. I cannot begin to thank a wonderful committee for all of their hard work arranging the many moving parts to make this event the success it was. I passed the baton to Carol Schemo this year, and she hit the ground running to coordinate her committee, all the while planning her daughter’s wedding!!! In alphabetical order, because we ALL worked hard to pull this off- Stephanie Joseph, Marcy Kaufman, Felice Myers, Gail Rudel, Elisa Siegel and Leslie Swichkow…. you are all my superheroes. A huge thank you! Thank you as well to Kim, Becky and Jenny, working hard behind the scenes and fielding my 6,000 questions and requests. I don’t know how we will be able to top it, but I know that next year’s Women’s Seder just might be bigger and better!!!

Coming up for Sisterhood is our Closing Event on May 19th. You should have already received your invitation via Email. Dr. Marnie Nadolne will instruct and guide us in the making of a Mizrach (a piece of art designating the eastern direction, see below) that will be framed and ready to hang. No artistic ability is needed and I guarantee you will be proud to display this piece of art in your home, so start scouting for that perfect eastern-facing wall!!

We will use a process called metal tooling to make a Mizrach, a piece designating the eastern direction, which you will bring home to hang on an eastern wall to direct you toward Jerusalem.

It is an impressive piece of art, but does not require impressive artistic talent!

Cost: $25 per person, includes all supplies for completed, framed artwork.

She specializes in Pottery, jewelry, paper art, and metal art. Marnie resides in Roswell, GA and is thrilled to offer a workshop in her hometown!

A licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Segal maintains a private practice in Georgia. Dr. Segal writes a monthly column, in its seventh year, for the Atlanta Jewish Times. Titled: New Moon Meditations and offers spirituality and a meditation focus for meaningful observance of Rosh Chodesh in current life.

Rosh Chodesh is the celebration of the new moon and the new month, according to the Jewish calendar. Rosh Chodesh has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. In midrash Pirke DeRabbi Elezer, Chapter 45, we are told that in the incident of the Golden Calf, the women refused to relinquish their earnings to the men who were building the calf. As a reward, God gave them an extra holy day each month, free from work.

B’NAI MITZVAH Jayson Lior Faupel will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May 11, 2019.

He is the son of Dalia and Dave Faupel and brother to Leah. Jayson is a 7th grader at Elkins Pointe Middle School, where he is a superior honor roll student, a member of Junior Beta and a saxophone player in the band.

He plays both basketball and soccer during the school year and spends summers at URJ Camp Coleman.

He has played guitar since age 7 and is the lead guitarist in a rock band, as well as a musician with TBT’s Ruach Shabbat house band.

For one of his mitzvah projects, together with a camp friend, he produced, hosted and performed in a charity rock concert to raise money for Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, an organization with special significance to his family and his beloved rescue dog, Goldie. Jayson is thrilled to share this milestone with friends and family, including cherished grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Emalie Claire Paulin will be called to the Torah on May 18, 2019. She is the daughter of Chad and Meredith Paulin, and sister to Kaela and Brooklyn. Granddaughter of Jon Zarett and the late Marcia Zarett, Granddaughter of Steve and Nancy Paulin.

Emalie is an honor student in 7th grade at Mabry Middle school where she is a member of the choir and plays violin in the orchestra. She also plays piano, where she most recently was the recipient of the 15 point gold cup.

Emalie is a member of the East Cobb National Charity league, a mother /daughter philanthropy where she along with her mother and sister Kaela, commit their time to leadership development to foster community responsibility.

For her Mitzvah projects, Emalie chose to support the Dreaming Zebra Foundation, a non for profit that supplies art and music education to kids in areas that otherwise would not be able to have this opportunity. She was able to raise over $600 towards this cause with the help of friends and family.

On a more local front, she found a ministry program that provides classes and assistance to adults with disabilities. Emalie created and instructed art lessons to these individuals, many of whom could not speak or walk. She saw first hand how art can be a universal expression regardless of ability. In honor of her love for the arts, and her desire to honor her late grandmother Marcia who was an art specialist.

Camille Ellen Block will be called to the Torah on May 11, 2019.

She is the daughter of Scott and Mary Block and sister to Nicholas.

Camille is in the 7th grade at Northwestern Middle School where she clarinet in the

school band. Her hobbies include both tap and jazz dance, baking, drawing, reading and hanging out with friends. She also loves spending time with her two dogs, Reo and Jethro. Camille will be attending Camp Coleman for her fourth summer this year and considers it her second home.

She regularly volunteers with the organization Project Open Hand, to provide meals for those in need in the Atlanta area, as well as Medshare which re-purposes medical supplies to be utilized in low-cost or free clinics within the U.S. and abroad.

Jarrett Benjamin Leitman will be called to the Torah on May 25, 2019.

Jarrett is the son of Jill and Hal Leitman and brother to Robbie. He is the grandson of Margie Aarons, Michael and Carol Aarons, the late Robert Leitman, and Gladys and David Herckis. Jarrett is in the 7th grade at Autrey Middle School, where he participates in Junior Beta Club. He plays both soccer and basketball, and he enjoys playing Xbox, spending time with friends and family, and attending all Atlanta sports events.

For his Mitzvah Projects, Jarrett volunteered with Family Promise, Meals to Grace Aquaponic Farm, Discover Science Center Camp, and The Packaged Good. In support of a Kids Boost project, he participated in a charity basketball tournament to benefit Camp Sunshine. Jarrett also attended a fundraiser and donated Tzedakah to the Angels Among Us Pet Rescue organization.

Thank you to Rabbi Shuval-Weiner and Cantor Nancy Kassel for their valuable time in preparing Jarrett for his Bar Mitzvah.

Our Annual Campaign is well underway. TBT’s Annual Giving Campaign remains the backbone of a strong financial base for our congregation. While dues and tuition help pay for the much of the cost to run the synagogue, we also rely on philanthropic annual gifts from TBT congregants. These gifts allow us to provide wonderful programming and engagement opportunities for our congregational community. In keeping with our mission, our fundraising initiatives focus on several broad categories that support the work we do. Your gift(s) to one or more of these funds is greatly appreciated.

General Fund– This goes to where the need is greatest and allows the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving Temple the most flexibility in directing your contribution dollars. at the Rabbis’ discretion.

Building Fund- Donations are used to pay down the building debt.

Cantors’ Fund – Donations are used for charitable giving at the Cantor’s discretion.

Tikkun Olam Fund – The purpose of this fund is to promote and support social justice and community service efforts, particularly those that encourage giving and volunteering in partnership with our synagogue.

Preschool Enrichment Fund – This fund provides for staff development workshops, parent education, enrichment specialists, and special equipment for the preschool.

Campership/Israel Fund– These monies are used to provide scholarships for children to attend summer camp, retreats, study programs or Israel experiences.

Michael Zalkin Memorial Library Fund- Donations are used to purchase books and other library improvements.

Prayer Book Fund– Used to purchase books used for the purpose of conducting a service (Siddurim, Chumashim, Shiva minyan books, etc)

Torah Fund- Donations provide for the maintenance and upkeep of our Torah scrolls and dressings.

Education Scholarship Fund- helps to provide need-based scholarship assistance to families attending Religious education classes at TBT. 14
