A Reform Congregation Embracing Our Jewish Tradition

News & Happenings from Temple Beth Tikvah

April Showers bring May Flowers This month brings us a true sense of blossoming. Not only are we witness to the explosion of renewed life in the natural world, but we see the turning of the seasons of life in each others’ faces. With our youngsters, we see the completion of another year of learning marked by graduations…preschool, high school, and university. Even in the life of our Cantor Nancy Kassel, as she receives an honorary doctorate from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion celebrating 25 years serving the Jewish people. It is in these special moments, these times of transition, that we are able to stop and notice the many wonderful blessings found in the journey of life.

Network, the counting of the Omer encourages us to see this seven-week period as a pilgrimage for the heart. Moving from a narrow place of constriction and limitation of choice, we journey out into the open space, which is liberating but also uncharted terrain, where we may encounter doubt, uncertainty and fear. As we learn to be in the unknown, we also internalize a vision of faith and discover ourselves feeling a new sense of belonging, more connected and at home. To begin, ask yourself: Where are you now? What is stirring inside of you that brings you to this journey right now? What truths do you bring with you on this journey? What do you hope to find when you arrive at your Sinai? There are a number of Omer counting sites on the internet for those who wish to fulfill this mitzvah, or begin a new contemplative practice. One I highly recommend offers daily reflections from Rabbi Yael Levy in your inbox www.mishkan.org

In our world of Jewish time we are in the midst of one of these amazing periods of a transitional journey. Having just completed Passover, we are in a phase of time called the Sefirat HaOmer- the counting of the Omer- the time when in our sacred narrative we as a newly birthed people, journey toward revelation at Sinai.

As we celebrate the varied moments of transition in our personal lives, let us also take these days of counting and use them to deepen our awareness of sacred time, of growth and of daily revelation, and in so doing increase the “meaning” that so many of us seek in life…Wishing all a purposeful journey and I look forward to seeing you at Sinai!

According to the Torah (Lev. 23:15), we are obligated to count the days from Passover to Shavuot. The counting is intended to forge a link between Passover, which commemorates the Exodus, and Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah. It reminds us that redemption from slavery was not complete until we received the Torah. Many Reform Jews today see these days of counting as ripe for engaging in a new contemplative practice. According to my dear friend Rabbi Jill Zimmerman of the Jewish Mindfulness

Notes from Cantor Kassel INSTALLATION WEEKEND! Right smack in the middle of this busy month of May (Yom HaShoah, Yom HaZikaron, Yom HaAtzma’ut, Lag B’Omer, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day) we all have the pleasure of celebrating our new rabbi, Alexandria Shuval-Weiner. The word “installation” always sounds a bit awkward to me, but let’s just say, that after 10 ½ months……it’s official. I feel fairly confident that most of our TBT membership has had an opportunity to meet and interact with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, and that, in and of itself, speaks volumes. The song “Getting To Know You” from “The King And I” rings true to Rabbi Shuval-Weiner’s first year here. More accurately though is that we have been getting to know each other. Relationships are never just one-way but when we enter a new relationship it’s important to be honest and genuine about who we are. In doing so there exists possibility of becoming who we might become, in a relationship of mutual growth. Rather than remaining stagnant, we and our relationships evolve. I’ve greatly enjoyed these first 10½ months of getting to know and work with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner. It’s also been a pleasure to welcome her husband Jay into our community. I guess I am at the point in my life when I hear myself saying more often…..”At my age……” and so here it is: At my age, I see that it is most important to get to know new people by looking into their hearts and motivations rather than a long check-list of pros and cons. Rabbi Shuval-Weiner has come to our synagogue community with an open heart, eagerly reaching out to us and truly dedicated to making Judaism more real and meaningful in our lives. I look forward to being the best partner I can in these shared desires for TBT and pray that she can continue her sacred service for years to come, going from strength to strength. Congratulations to Cantor Nancy Kassel, as she receives an honorary doctorate from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion celebrating 25 years serving the Jewish people.

News and Happenings from Temple Beth Tikvah

A very special Shabbat evening service will take place at Temple Beth Tikvah on Friday, May 13th, when Rabbi Shuval-Weiner will be formally installed as our Senior Rabbi. Performing the installation will be Rabbi Arthur P. Nemitoff, Senior Rabbi of The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah of Overland Park, Kansas, with TBT Rabbi Emeritus Donald Tam offering a blessing. Joining Cantor Kassel and the TBT choirs, will be visiting Cantors Sheri Allen and Sharon Kohn. A special Oneg Shabbat will follow in the Tam-Blank Social Hall. On Saturday morning, May 14th, Cantors Allen and Kohn will participate in our worship service and Rabbi Tam will offer reflections over the Torah portion during the service beginning at 10:00 am. The community is invited for a lovely Kiddush luncheon, sponsored by the synagogue, in honor of Rabbi Shuval-Weiner's leadership. The celebration continues at 10:00 am on Sunday morning for all Synagogue members, with a mini-Mitzvah day and concluding with a summer-style "Picnic in the Parking Lot" at noon.

Arthur P. Nemitoff is Senior Rabbi of The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah, in Overland Park, KS. Raised in Kansas City at his current congregation, he returned home thirteen years ago to lead the largest synagogue in the metropolitan area. With a Bachelor's degree from Washington University, a Master's degree and ordination from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion (Cincinnati campus), and a Doctor of Divinity degree also from HUC-JIR, Rabbi Nemitoff has spent his 35-year career nurturing Jewish meaning, connection, and continuity for those whom he has encountered. In addition to serving congregations in Houston, Philadelphia, Boston, Columbus (OH), and now in Kansas City, Rabbi Nemitoff has done extensive overseas work with Jewish and secular groups in Bulgaria, Serbia, Estonia, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Israel. However, he is especially honored to have worked with Rabbi Shuval-Weiner as his colleague at B'nai Jehudah for six years prior to her arrival at Temple Beth Tikvah. Cantor Sharon Kohn came to The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah in July of 2003. For ten years she engaged with the congregation in prayer, visited with members in times of transition, joy, sorrow and pain, and could be found teaching young and old. Cantor Kohn is a graduate of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Music, with a Masters in Sacred Music and Ordination as a Cantor. She served congregations in Texas, Louisiana and Ohio prior to coming to Kansas City. Sharon Kohn became a cantor to assist people in finding their Jewish voice by sharing Judaism through personal story, study, liturgy, ritual and music. As of July 2014, Kohn has been B'nai Jehudah's first Chesed-Pastoral Care Director. She strives to expand circles of caring so that they reach ever further and deeper. She is challenged by the congregation's guiding principles of Kedushah (Holiness), keeping an Open Heart and acting with Derech Eretz. Cantor Sheri Allen is completing her seventh year leading Congregation Beth Shalom in Arlington, TX and is currently serving a three-year term on the Cantors Assembly Executive Council. Cantor Allen is also the Jewish Community Chaplain for VITAS Healthcare in Ft. Worth, where she provides pastoral care to Jewish patients and conducts seminars on Jewish end-of-life care for hospitals in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. In addition, she works as a PRN (as needed) Chaplain at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Ft. Worth. She has studied Clinical Pastoral Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and is also on the Executive Committee of the Attending Clergy Association. She helped create the successful November symposium, "A Time to Talk: A Jewish Community Conversation about Advance Care Planning" for Ft. Worth & Tarrant County. 4

HOTTY 8th Grade Rush

“What a difference a year can make. My 8th grade rush was nothing like I had expected, well I hadn’t expected it all. Eighth grade rush is the first HOTTY event that 8th graders are able to attend. The goal of the entire event is to show off how awesome HOTTY is and make sure the 8th graders see it as a fun and safe environment that they will want to become a part of. Obviously my Rush was successful (since I am still heavily involved in HOTTY). The theme was THE AMAZING RACE: We went to Sky Zone and CiCis for dinner. Then had a cupcakes war back at temple. This year as a freshman I had the privilege to be on the planning board for this year’s rush. We chose the theme Wake up, Waffles, and Whirly Ball. The difference a year can make; last year I wouldn’t have imagined that I’d be able to plan probably one of the most impactful programs of the year. The biggest difference is the fact that this year I knew exactly what the 8th graders were feeling. I hope everyone had an amazing time at rush and can’t wait to see them at an event. Come to the May 18th Senior Sendoff at TBT, the last HOTTY event of the year! See you there (especially you, eighth graders)! My Swan Song It’s finally here……..my very last Kol Tikvah article. When I first took office in 2013, I admitted to the congregation that I was very nervous about taking on the role of President and anxious about how I might fulfill the responsibilities that the role entails. It’s now three years later and I pause to reflect on my term as it comes to an end. Unlike the corporate world where a leader’s success can be measured by increase in share price, sales, and number of locations, in synagogue life, success is intangible, personal and hard to measure.

initiatives come to fruition. Your kind words and encouraging emails meant more than you know. Many thanks to all of you for your support. Thanks to those of you (and you know who you are!) who stepped up when I needed you and TBT needed you. A very special thanks to those who served on the Rabbinic search committee as well as to our fabulous office and professional staff. Even though it wasn’t easy for me, I am also appreciative to those who shared their complaints, criticisms and suggestions, because I know you cared enough to do so. Now I ask that you show Harlan Graiser, our next President and Board the same respect, that you step up and volunteer in the future so that OUR sacred community can grow and continue to be a source of inspiration to all of us. They say that the best job in synagogue life is that of the immediate past president. I am not quite sure why but I am looking forward to that supporting role.

I am gratified by our successes –a wonderful new Rabbi bursting with new ideas and programming, several significant renovations, repair and improvement projects, a renewal of our second night congregational Seder, a continued enhancement and growth of our fabulous youth program, and a new legacy giving program to augment our endowment fund which will ensure that our congregation lives long into the future. I also celebrate our continued strengths – our wonderful Cantor of 18 years, the wisdom and engagement of our founding Rabbi, a preschool and religious school, brimming with the future of our congregation.

I do have so many people to thank that have helped me along the way but THE most important person I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to is Leslie. She hates when I publically thank her but this being my last article, it needed to be done. Honestly, it would literally be impossible for her to have provided more support not just emotionally but just plain old “doing”. Whether it was helping with my articles, running events for which I could not find enough volunteers, hosting congregants in our home, catering the Board retreats and staff lunch, sharing me as I spend countless nights and weekends at meetings, or on phone calls and sending emails, she supported me every step of the way while at the same time chairing our amazing Kehillat Chesed committee and participating on the Sisterhood board. It was truly a partnership as we both shared the love for our community.

There have been wonderful moments and some challenging ones as well. I have leaned on so many and have been supported by three successive dedicated Boards of Trustees. I have made some incredible new friends and strengthened relationships that I will always cherish. I have repeatedly beseeched all of you to be more involved, because only by your immersion in the life of this sacred community will you reap the benefits that are here waiting for you. Honestly, this may be my biggest disappointment. I had hoped that I could leave my position with more committed volunteers that would be primed to succeed our current lay leadership. I have also worked tirelessly with our fundraising committee to enhance giving that would allow us the freedom to make some of our dreams a reality. Perhaps I set the bar too high but we have definitely made some progress.

I thank you for allowing me to have served as your President as my life has been immeasurably enhanced by the experience.

Contrary to what you may think, this is not a thankless job. It is truly wonderful to see envisioned programs well attended and see new

Religious School Pesach is a time when we celebrate the exodus from slavery to freedom. Most of us understand that an effective Seder allows us to feel as if we journey from slavery to freedom in the course of the evening. We do so by retelling the story, seeing the tangible symbols placed on the Seder plate, eating foods that remind us of the bitterness of enslavement and engaging in discussion about what this all means for us today. The educational system begins at home. We take the lessons that have kept us alive throughout the centuries and teach them to our children. We gather with our families and friends around the Seder table and tell the story of how we became a people. We elicit questions, stimulate discussion, and share fundamental ideas. In Temple Beth Tikvah, just like in the Seder, we teach our children the story of Passover: the order of the Seder, the Passover songs, we involve the children and prompt them to ask questions. We culminated our study of Passover by engaging our children in stimulating Passover activities. I wish everyone a wonderful Passover.

Shalom,

Hassia Levin 7

By now, forty-eight of Temple Beth Tikvah’s college students should have received a fun package in honor of the Purim Holiday. What better way to show them we’re thinking of them while away at school? Included in the packages were small school supplies, Fives gum, coffee and hot chocolate packets, delicious Hamantaschen, Rice Krispy Treats, Life Savers candy and fruit snacks. Don’t let your student miss out on the fun. If you would like for your student to receive a similar package, and we do not currently have their school mailing address, please send it to us and they will be included in the next shipment. Of course, this would not be possible without the help of many, as well as the generous donations we received from Beth Kess and Ginger Glazer. Their generosity is much appreciated and made our care packages more special! There are many volunteers who assisted with assembling the packages and we were so thankful their help: Beth Kess, Michelle Easton, Nan Janis, Carol Lipinsky, Helaine Medoff, Ellen Rickles, and Julie Scott. Thank you all so much for your assistance!

Do you know a college junior, senior, or recent graduate?

Finally, without the help of the office staff Lisa Singer, Becky Sullivan and Michelle Leder this would not be possible. Thank you for giving us all the assistance we needed, providing labels, setting up the social hall and so many other details. Rabbi Shuval-Weiner, as busy as you are, we so appreciate your taking the time to share your words of wisdom in a personal letter to the students. I’m sure it will be the highlight of their package.

Landing that first post-college job can be difficult, Jewish Family & Career Services is here to help. JFCS is now accepting applications for the June program of gPATH. This program will give participants an in-depth understanding of what it will take to successfully enter the workforce and excel.

Keeping our students connected to the TBT community is important. If you have any small items you’d like to supply for the next mailing or would like to make a monetary donation to the cause it would be much appreciated. If you haven’t already, please help us stay connected to your students by providing us with their college mailing address. Thank you!

Through a combination of group instruction and one-on-one components like resume review, mock interviewing, and coaching, participants will leave our program with the tools to be confident, and capable professionals. JF&CS’ job placement services are offered upon completion of the program. For more information and to apply visit the gPATH website at https://yourtoolsforliving.org/services/careers/gpath

Shalom!! As TBT is nearing the end of its fiscal year, I am excited to report to our family the success of the Annual Campaign. We reached several of our goals set forth last June: 1. We raised and exceeded the $110,000 needed to sufficiently build our future today! We raised over $111,000 to date. 2. We were able to fully match both the Arthur Blank Family Foundation ($25,000) and our anonymous donor's match of having 40 families contribute $250 above what they pledged during last year's campaign ($10,000), totaling $35,000 in matching gifts. 3. Our special event this year, the Art Auction, raised over $7,500 toward the campaign goals. There is still time to contribute because we are building for TBT's future. In closing, it has been my honor and privilege to serve these past two years as the chairman of the Fundraising Committee. Our committee has made great strides in fundraising at TBT and has gotten more participation from our community than in the past , but we've only moved one mountain and there are many more to move. I want to personally thank all of the committee members who volunteered to serve and give their time and effort to support TBT. Lastly, good luck to Andy Zalkin who will be stepping up and leading the committee starting the new fiscal year.

Temple Beth Tikvah acknowledges with sadness the death of Dr. Daniel Appelrouth, husband of Arlene Appelrouth, who served as our Cantor from our founding until 1997. He and his family were among the original families of Temple Beth Tikvah.

for helping with the cleaning of the TBT kitchen for Passover. Without your generous donation of time and elbow grease, I would have had difficulty getting it done.

His voice and his presence will be missed in the community.

Thanks so very much! Becky 14
