For Whom Are We Responsible?

Last month as we sat at our Seder tables the Haggadah guided us to reflect on the meaning of herut, freedom. As we now work our way through the liminal days of the Omer leading us to the festival of Shavuot, and our collective recommitment to Torah ethics and acts of Gemilut Chasadim (loving kindness), I am reminded of a story from a favorite Passover Haggadah A Different Night by Noam Zion and Barbara Specter.

My mother answered him quietly, but with great passion. Even though we were poor, how could we refuse to save Jewish lives if we were given the chance to do so? She was ashamed of the other sisterhood members. All of them should have volunteered, and she would not hesitate to tell them so at the next meeting. “If we have enough food for five of us,” she asked, “why can’t we simply make it enough for eight?” If I must wash shirts for six boys instead of three, what’s the difference?”…

Rabbi Herbert Friedman z”l, grew up during the Great Depression. His family was poor. One night, his mother attended a meeting of her synagogue sisterhood, where a representative of the U.S. National Refugee Service made an urgent plea for Jewish families to “take into their homes German-Jewish children whose parents were willing to let them emigrate to the United States, not knowing if they would ever see those children again.”

The parental argument raged all night—the only time I remember my parents raising their voices in anger and disagreement. She won. In the morning, my father signed the affidavits, and she proudly took them back to the synagogue.

As I mulled over the matter, I decided that my mother’s fight with my father symbolized the whole problem, and the only conclusion was therefore to act according to moral Jewish values, without permitting rationalization, delay, or any other diluting factor. “When history knocks, you answer.”

Of the more than 100 women assembled, all mothers, no more than a dozen raised their hand. My mother stood and announced that she would take three children. God has been good to her, she said, giving her three healthy sons; this was her opportunity to repay. She added without embarrassment that her family was living in a small apartment, with only two bedrooms, because their house had been foreclosed by the bank during the Depression. Hence, she could take only boys, who could sleep mixed in with her sons.

In the journey of the Omer, our sacred narrative has us resting in space and time away from Mitzrayim, the constricted place, but not quite yet ready to receive God’s laws. It is in thisa state of uncertainty when we must search our own hearts and minds to determine what type of people we want to be. Here at Temple Beth Tikvah, we strive to ask big questions to help us all grow as Jews and as Anasheim. Our Jewish tradition teaches that to be human is to care for others- Teshtadel L’heyot Esh. In these days of in-betweenness let us reflect on freedom, responsibility and the sanctity of humanity.

Notes from Cantor Kassel THOSE TIMES…. WHEN YOU’RE IN OTHER PEOPLE’S WORLDS We all experience times when we comfort the bereaved or visit people we know in the hospital or at home due to some sort of illness or struggle. We become a part of those environments momentarily and then get back into our cars and head towards wherever or whatever it is we normally do each day.

Then there are times when we linger in these environments quite a bit longer and find that they can be a world unto themselves. I absolutely marvel at those who work in hospice, hospitals or places of rehabilitation. How do they find the mental and physical strength to constantly see and work with those in dire need of assistance and attention? How do they manage to take care of themselves when they are so giving to others?

Of recent, I have spent more-than-usual time visiting family in the hospital and a physical rehabilitation center. While I may be learning a trick or two in terms of physical therapy, what I’ve seen first-hand is the power of a greeting, a smile and taking the time for a small, light-hearted chitchat. It’s SO simple yet so powerful. We can’t all be professionals in the medical field but it’s quite within our reach to offer a kind word not only to those we know but to the stranger. It’s not a Southern or Northern ‘thing’……it’s just plain nice, and it re-energizes us when we are starting to feel our own energy level decline.

In the month of May, the TBT community will rejoice in the accomplishments of our: Confirmation Class (Friday, May 11) Ben/Bat Torah Class (Saturday, May 5) Lay Leadership (Sunday, May 6) and observe the Major Festival of Shavuot (May 19 & 20)

There is much to do and to celebrate in our Judaism but equally important are those little things…the smile, the greeting, the sincere inquiry into someone’s welfare and….the simple chit-chat. These things

My Biggest Lesson My Biggest Lesson – The Value of Torah Study

The way these questions ultimately get answered is absolutely fascinating to me. I know our Christian friends have their version of “The Greatest Story Ever Told” but I’ll put our version up against anyone’s. Studying Torah as an adult will make you more informed about not only the what of Judaism but also the why of how it became what it is today. And don’t we tend to feel more connected to a person or a cause (or religion!) once we understand their back story?

As I close out my tenure as president I am confronted with the challenge of writing my most inspirational, whiz-bang final article for our monthly newsletter, the Kol Tikvah. While a few grandiose topics briefly crossed my mind there was never a real question about the topic I would select: the value of engaging in Torah study. Of all the things I have done at TBT over the years, the hands -down winner as the most personally rewarding activity has been my participation in Torah study classes.

On a more practical level I’ve also learned that simply reading a straight translation of the Torah by yourself will allow the average person to glean perhaps 5% of its meaning. It takes the assistance of a trained rabbi and a good Torah commentary to get a glimpse of that other 95%. Here’s just one example: there is no way that, left to my own devices, I would ever have connected the section of Leviticus describing the removal of mold from the walls of one’s house with the sin of malicious gossip.

“Who cares?” you might ask. It turns out that our rabbinic sages used a lot of ink writing about the consequences of malicious gossip and why we should avoid it at all costs. Even Rabbi ShuvalWeiner devoted a High Holy Day sermon to the topic last fall. So, reading about mold on walls ends up being a doorway into a deeper understanding of our all-too-common tendencies towards gossip and what we need to do about it.

I suspect that some of you may equate the desire to study Torah to wanting to become an expert in the mating habits of the Brazilian treehopper. In other words, how could reading about archaic animal sacrifices, a defunct priesthood, and ancient stories that sound more like legends have any possible relevance to my life today? You’d be surprised (as was I).

Let me first acknowledge that the religion described in the Torah seems to bear little resemblance to the Judaism we practice now. After all, there’s nothing in Torah about synagogues, rabbis, Shabbat services, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Chanukkah, etc. What I have come to learn is that Judaism can be viewed as a sort of inverted pyramid. It all rests on the point which is Torah, the Five Books of Moses. But that point supports and connects to an entire superstructure of rules and practices which evolved in response to the existential threats that history thrust upon us. That is, how can we continue to exist as Jews when we’re conquered by foreign powers, the ‘religion’ we had been practicing for over 1,000 years is taken away from us (the sacrificial system centered at the Temple in Jerusalem), we’re kicked out of the only land in which the Torah laws supposedly applied, and/or we’re confronted with the strong pull of assimilation from the outside society around us?

If you believe that increasing the degree to which we choose to “live Jewishly” is important to ensuring the continuity of our people, then Torah study is, in my opinion, the very best starting point for learning more about what that means. And we offer an easy way to do it almost every week!

Following most Saturday morning services and the Kiddush lunch, Rabbi Shuval-Weiner hosts a Torah study class called “Rabbi’s Table” based on that week’s Torah portion. Important note: you do NOT need to attend services in order to attend the class – feel free to arrive on Saturdays around 12:15 to only attend the class. You will definitely be welcomed. That is the true definition of a sacred partnership. The Rabbi and I view Temple Beth Tikvah, our House of Hope, as the “Shul with a Soul”. You are all the Neshama,the Soul, of our Shul. G-d has commanded us to be Holy. Let’s strive to be holy with one another.

Family Picnic: Tikkun Olam Activity - Blessings in a Backpack

During the picnic immediately after the final day of religious school, Sun, May 6, we'll be packing meal bags and making cards for Blessings in a Backpack North Fulton. Blessings in a Backpack provides elementary school children who are on the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal Program with a backpack of food to take home over weekends, as many don't have enough to eat when they're not in school. We'll be providing them with food and designing cards with messages to let them know we care about them and wish them a great weekend.

Between now and May 6 we are collecting specific non-perishable food items to make up each backpack. Please drop donations off in the religious school lobby, outside Susan's office. We need: fruit cups, vegetables (cans), pudding, single serve cereal, canned pasta (ravioli, spaghetti & meatballs, etc.) .

During this inspiring week we offer a helping hand to families, so that they can get back on their feet. We invite the entire congregation to take part. We are looking for dinner hosts, overnight hosts and members to bring donations. All activities take place at TBT. We invite your family to come meet the families in Family Promise.

"If you are unable to volunteer that week, you can still help. If you would like to make a donation to help fund the groceries to cover breakfast and lunch, feel free to send that in to the temple and put Family Promise in the memo field. Every little bit helps."

Youth Group We just finished our HOTTY elections for the 2018-2019 school year.

Congratulations to the newly elected board! And to all of you who ran, let me say how proud I am of all of you. It truly takes guts to stand up in front of your peers and tell them that you want to lead. It may sound cheesy, but as far as I’m concerned, you all are already leaders of our youth group, our HOTTY family.

Interestingly, a number of youth groups are doing away with elections. They are opting for “slated” positions or all-inclusive youth group boards (in other words, anyone who wants a position, gets one). Why? The simple answer is so nobody loses, so no teen has to fail. We want our kids to love youth group, to feel like they belong and that it is a safe place for them.

We don’t want them to feel judged, to lose, to fail at something.

I’ve been a youth group advisor for over 15 years, so needless to say, I’ve sat through A LOT of elections. I have watched teens lose, I’ve watched them feel broken and sad, and often times I’ve cried with them. So, why does HOTTY still hold elections?

I firmly believe that teens today do not know how to fail. As a society, we’re so afraid to let them lose at anything, to not be the best, that we’ve created a safety net where it’s practically impossible for them to be anything but the winner or part of the “inside.” But, we’re doing them a disservice. We haven’t taught them the necessary coping skills they need as they grow up and go out into the real world.

Learning to fail is hard, it hurts. But our teens will only succeed if we teach them that it’s OK to fail.

That even when (not if) they do fail, we still believe in them, we believe that they are kind, smart, and talented individuals.

Running for HOTTY board is one of the best places to learn this. After elections are over I check in with each of the candidates who lost, I give them time to feel hurt and sadness, and to mourn (ok, really we all go out for huge scoops of ice cream!). But, then I help them move on. I make sure that they know that they still have a place in HOTTY and we work with to find a leadership opportunity in HOTTY that they feel passionate about. Believe me, when your son or daughter doesn’t get into their dream college, the admissions office isn’t going to call to see if they are ok and how they’re handling it. My hope is that long after they’ve left HOTTY, when they fail a test in college or their first boyfriend or girlfriend breaks their heart, they’ll look back on the experience they had running for HOTTY board and know that it’ll be ok. They’ll pick themselves up and be a better person for it.

I know and understand that as parents, it’s hard on you as well. It’s hard to watch your kids fail and to see them sad and disappointed. You can help your teen after he/she loses by giving them time and allowing them to be sad and then reminding them they have made great contributions and should continue to work as a leader, even without a formal title. Please also, reach out to me. Let me know how you, and your teen are doing. Together, I hope that we can raise our teens at TBT to have the skills and coping mechanisms they’ll need to be successful, long after they’ve left the walls of our building.

B’nai Mitzvah Jamie P. McCord will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 12, 2018. Jamie is the daughter of Renee Rappaport McCord and Bruce McCord of Woodstock, Georgia, and sister to Marla A. McCord, 16. She is in the 7th grade at E.T. Booth Middle School (BMS) where she is a cheerleader for all the basketball teams and plays the clarinet and bass clarinet in the BMS 7th grade band. She also swims on the Eagle Rays summer swim team. Jamie loves hanging out with her friends, jumping on the trampoline and going to the beach. As preparation for her Bat Mitzvah, Jamie has been involved monthly with Project Open Hand delivering and packaging food. She is Joshua Allen Leibowitz-Goldberg will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May 12th, 2018. He is the son of Glenn Goldberg and Linda Leibowitz and the big brother of Max and Sophie Goldberg. Joshua is in the 7th grade at Dodgen Middle School. Joshua plays the drums in the Band and the Percussion Ensemble. He is a member of the Drama Club. During his free time Joshua enjoys technology, hanging out with his friends and going to movies.

Hello from Sisterhood!

We have been very busy this spring, trying to fit in some events and programming before summer travel and plans begin. We hosted Knit and Nosh and continue to make scarves for homeless women and “mommy love squares” for newborns. You may have also heard that we had to reschedule our speaker on anti-semitism and had a very impressive program this past month. Mr. Brendon Murphy spoke on “The Long and Tragic History of Anti-Semitism” the evening of April 22nd. We were so fortunate to have a very eloquent and dynamic speaker on such a timely topic. The material presented really prompted great discussion and certainly was so thought provoking. A huge thank you shouts out to Mr. Murphy and to Bonnie Walkes for planning this great event.

Game Day was enjoyed by all the morning of April 29th. We featured Canasta and thank Carole Crenshaw for teaching us this new offering. Mah Jongg was also enjoyed by Sisterhood players!

I encourage you to become an active member of Sisterhood and help in our planning process. Mark and I first became part of the Temple Beth Tikvah family when our son Matthew started in the preschool at 13 years ago when he was 2 years old. We quickly decided that we wanted to make TBT our spiritual home and have been members ever since. My parents, Pat and Fred, joined TBT around the same time and we have remained active members ever since. I have served on the Board of Trustees and many years on the Board of Education. I have been teaching in the Religious School and preschool for the last 6 years. Currently, my mom and I co-teach the 2nd grade together. Mark served on the search committee for the Director of Congregational Learning as well as being active in the Men’s Club. Our boys both have attended the preschool and religious school, participated in youth group activities, and Matthew had his Bar Mitzvah in 2016. My parents are active in their Chavurah and Pat also is a member of the Tai-Chi group that meets weekly. We have all found our place in the TBT community and
